Malaise: Unemployment Up .1%

7.9%

According to Alan B. Krueger, the White House Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, this is an improvement although he again warned against looking too much at one month of statistics.

“While more work remains to be done, today’s employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to heal from the wounds inflicted by the worst downturn since the Great Depression,” Krueger said in a statement. “It is critical that we pursue the policies needed to build an economy that works for the middle class as we continue to dig our way out of the deep hole that was caused by the severe recession that began in December 2007.”

Remember when 10 days after being sworn in as President for the second time Ronald Reagan kept blaming Jimmy Carter? Oh right he didn't because the economy was booming by then.

Old and busted: Forward! New Warmedoveredness: Eventually!

We can gripe all we want, but there is absolutely no truth they will not cover up, no mistake they won't sweep under the rug, to ensure that the first black president, regardless of him being a stupendous blundering failure by every conceivable metric, is seen as a success. 26 Okay, follow this with me.

In late 2008, when everything was starting to crash, it was either Bush or McCain who said something along the lines of "Yes, this is terrible, but the fundamentals of the economy are strong."

Now, regardless of the accuracy of that statement (I actually agreed with it, then- had we left well enough alone things would have corrected and we'd be due for another recession (instead of just a worsening one) about now), it was excoriated throughout the media.

But isn't the media's current spin actually worse- they're claiming "don't believe your lying eyes, things are really getting better!"

I think someone with a Lexis-Nexis account should dig up one of those old articles, modify it with some of the current quotes (say, from Harry Reid) and publish it to see what happens.

Because it's been made clear: no complaining, no discussions, no questions. Shut up, do the work and no mistakes or we'll just find someone else. You're going on vacation? Shadow stats shows us at about 23%.... if you take the U-6 number which is unemployed, partialy employed (those working part time who want full time)... then add back in the 'discouraged' workers that the Government no longer counts...

The unemployment rate for the years 1923-29 was 3.3 percent. In 1931 it jumped to 15.9, in 1933 it was 24.9 percent.

The only reason there are no bread lines, is they give out Government Cards for it now....

83 This is one of the biggest stimuluses to our economy. Economists will tell you this money is spent quickly. It injects demand into the economy, and is job creating. It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name because, again, it is money that is needed for families to survive, and it is spent. So it has a double benefit. It helps those who have lost their jobs, but it also is a job creator. And for that reason, for those two reasons, at least, it should be passed, and I am optimistic that it will.

But I believe the report said that the labor market shrank further, so I don't understand how this is actually an improvement.

There's more to it than that. Yes, you're right: it is important to the Left (and to the African American community that includes comparative moderates)that the first black president not be perceived as a SCOAMF. It is more important, however, that the primary objective is achieved, which is the stealth Marxist socialist transformation of the United States.

The professional Left has spent decades ontheir 'long march through the institutions', putting true believers in place in academia and media, establishing nation-wide, interlocking activist networks such as ACORN, and--most importantly--suborning the leadership of the once-traditionally patriotic Democratic Party.

Once Obama was selected for the role, his path to power was made easy enough: the unsealing of Jack and Jeri Ryan's sealed divorce papers, the silencing of Tony Rezko, the collusion of the Daleys, who ran the Chicago Machine (and hence all of Illinois), the ongoing support and adoration of the press, and so on.

These people may talk a good dream and some might even believe in it, butthe ones at the top could give a damn about ideology. What they're about is godking-like power and the naked exercise of it.They hate, for example, private ownership of guns because they know--like Mao knew--that political power is essentially coercion backed by the threat of force. That threat is reduced somewhat by an armed and determined opposition.

The good news is that they're an arrogant bunch, bound to screw up and overreach. The bad news is that things will get worse before they get better, and I don't see a peaceful outcome to any of this. They've spent decades attaining power. I don't see them giving it up as the result of a free and fair election.

93 This is going well... far exceeding those plans laid out to me by my trusted stooges...eeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... advisers.... for the full socialistic recovery of this great land. Soon, all of you will be basking in the glow of "funemployment" and join the swelling ranks of my Free Shit Army!

BTW - which one of you would be willing to loofah Mooches stretch marks?

96 Ezra Klien: Your monthly jobs bummer: At this pace, the U.S. won’t get back to full employment until 2022

Pffft. At this rate we won't get back to the end of 2008 level until the end of January 2017.

98 The first black president must be a success. There
is no other mandate among democrats (media, hollywood, et al).
Absolutely nothing can or will interfere with that mandate.

We
can gripe all we want, but there is absolutely no truth they will not
cover up, no mistake they won't sweep under the rug, to ensure that the
first black president, regardless of him being a stupendous blundering
failure by every conceivable metric, is seen as a success. Period. End
of discussion.

And anyone pointing out how bad of a president he is or how damaging he is to the country is dismissed as racist. No one can disagree with Barry and his plans it's just because we're a bunch of racist hicks

Shibumi @38: yes, indeed, so many otherwise sensible folks (most people I know) are incredibly misinformed, and have no idea, and haven't even imagined anything other than relying on the MFM. Not just a question of info, distortion of facts, complete omission of facts (non-stop hysteria during Bush years over absolutely nothing, nothing - silence the last several years with spectacular catastrophes unfolding on every front). A question of framework: very few people even seem to have an intelligent framework within which to weigh and consider any "information" they get.

But I am skeptical that any of these people will ever be in for a rude shock, both because it's more likely to smolder/rot/decline than to "burn", and equally important because (again) - no framework within which to understand events that cannot be hidden by the MFM.

Fall of 2008. Financial "crisis". Automatic, reflexive, idiotic reaction of some friends to same: "lack of regulation". Five minutes of dumbed-down, sanitized (to avoid stepping on their tribal, mindless political partisan nerves) explanation of actual nature of mortgage derivative bubble: blank stares. I could have equal success trying to explain a nuclear explosive design to a hamster. They have no idea - they just default to their ignorance, bigotry, and when relevant self-dealing/selfish interests.

CA is a great example. Stupendous self-inflicted wounds and opportunity costs, huge risks, enormous injustices, all created by the ruling party and mindset. Even as results become clear, not the slightest interest, or backlash, or change - absolutely nothing. Tripling down on idiocy, more likely. And why should some of them care? They're taken care of. The "conservative" firefighter, who has guns, is uncomfortable with marriage redefinition, not too crazy about weird extreme anti-American foreigners - a reliable stupid voter, as their greed and lack of public service mindset reduces all elections to one thing. Their own (despicable, ultimately unworkable as well) narrow short-term self-interest. Isn't this a lot of what explains OH? How did WI ever (temporarily?) struggle out from under that corrosive, sickening phenomenon?

Make that quadrupling down on idiocy.

Just today there was a report on the stem cell initiative that the local morons voted for in 2004. You know, the one that set up California's own NIH, the better to stick it to George Bush.

Wonder of wonders, the whole thing turned into a colossal clusterfuck, rife with cronyism, corruption, and conflict of interest. Who'd have thought that the governing board couldn't give themselves and their colleagues money in an even-handed fashion?

Upshot: $3 billion down the toilet. The best part? It was borrowed money, thereby adding to California's financial woes.

Never had my doubts about Orwell's '1984' since it's been the model for much of humanity since the beginning.

106 The actual numbers that actually reflect the real world are bullshit and nobody really knows what they are.

The BLS compiles statistics based on wild assumptions of "seasonal adjustments" and assumptions of businesses started up that haven't shown up in records for that month

When reality kicks them in the balls and they can't spin it? Or else they need the actual bad numbers to give Helicopter Ben an excuse to print moar money? Blame the weather

That's right, Democrat control of the House and Senate.

That's when and why spending went out of control, and in large part why we can't fix it.

109 Actually, at the current rate (-.1% per month), the US will reach full UNemployment sometime in the year 2089, although realistically the country will collapse before that happens.

110 "At this pace, the U.S. won’t get back to full employment until 2022"

That's depressing. Although,on the bright side, if Hillary becomes president in 2016 we can realistically push the date for full employment back well beyond the date Nostradamus gave for the end of the world, sometime after the year 3000.
