9 Awesome, the student debt thing is a nice touchstone to how stupid the average American 20 something has gotten. Big Education which is another "field" that has had prices increase several fold over inflation and bats very left has its bubble blown by federal guarantees and the victims of the scam largely blame who they are told by the conmen to blame the GOP and Business. BRILLIANT!

16 A woman was shot to death while driving a van on the ramp from Lake
Shore Drive to Interstate 55 when someone pulled alongside her and fired
10 to 14 times Friday morning, police said.

“A brown full-sized van approached in the left lane,” Illinois State
Police Capt. Luis Gutierrez said at a press conference on the scene.
“That vehicle shot at our victim approximately 10 to 14 rounds. One
round struck our driver, who is now deceased at Northwestern (Memorial
Hospital).”

33 How Republicans are clobbered in Tech

Everyone has their own theory on why Romney lost to Obama. It is damn simple:

1. FSA out in droves for Obama. Likely not to happen next time unless they can find another clean and articulate magic negro.
2. The press who has been in the Democommie's back pocket since FDR.
3. Lackluster Republican moderate candidate who failed to inspire. Like the one we had in 2008.

Number 1 will be gone in 2016. Number 2 will still be there. We will have to see about number 3 but I would not bet on that changing.

Of course. Adding claimants, increasing risk exposure and increasing administrative and compliance costs = higher premiums. Sun rises in east.

But keep in mind the bait and switch component of Obamacare. The Dems know and fully intend for the system to fail. That's their strategy. That will provide the "crisis" from which they'll make their final push for single payer.

It's a good thing there wasn't another terrorist attack or, oh, right, never mind.

Sen Menendez: How many underage prostitutes did you consort with for that $60,000 in reimbursed airfare? Were they included in the airfare cost?

The Senate on Thursday approved legislation that prevents the U.S. from hitting its debt limit until May 19, sending the legislation to President Obama.

In a 64-34 vote, the Senate gave its blessing to a House bill that suspends the debt ceiling until May 19, when the Treasury Department will need to use “extraordinary measures” to keep paying the nation’s bills.

Republican Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Roy Blunt (Mo.), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Dean Heller (Nev.), John Hoeven (N.D.), John McCain (Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Richard Shelby (Ala.), John Thune (S.D.) and Roger Wicker (Miss.) voted with the Democratic caucus to pass the legislation. Only one Democrat — Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.)— voted against the bill.

Though actually, haven't I read somewhere that this "high protein" substance is not, in fact, high in protein? Where I read that and why i would be reading it I cannot remember, but I dno't think I'm having hallucinatory flashbacks.

86 Osama Bin Laden’s Son-In-Law Arrested In Turkey On Information From US, Reason For Embassy Attack?

Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law was arrested in Ankara by Turkish security forces after Washington allegedly informed Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) about his location, daily Milliyet reported today.

Suleyman M., son-in-law of former al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, was allegedly staying at a camp in Iran after the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.

He entered Turkey using a fake Saudi Arabian passport. Daily Milliyet claimed that the United States learned Suleyman M. was in Ankara and informed MİT. Turkish security forces captured him at a hotel in Çankaya district of Ankara.

U.S. Navy SEALS killed al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden at his compound in Pakistan on May 4, 2011. Kuwait revoked Suleyman M.’s citizenship after the U.S. issued an arrest warrant for him on charges of involvement in terrorist activities.

A Turkish court decided to release Suleyman M. on the grounds that he had not committed any crimes other than entering the country with a fake passport. However, he was not released and was returned to the police department for extradition from the country. The daily also said Suleyman M. would be extradited back to Iran. The U.S. reportedly asked Turkey to give Suleyman M. to the U.S. for interrogation on alleged al-Qaeda activities.

Years ago the back cover of an NRA magazine was an ad by a major handgun mfgr. (can't remember which) listing all of the federal agencies they supplied handguns to. The list of agencies covered the back page and included lots of agencies I never thought would have anybody armed.

I also saw a show several years ago where the FDA or some other fed agency was harassing some sausage maker to replace all of the the equipment his father had used to make sausage for over 50 years. The stuff was a real hit in the neighborhood and all of the restaurants carried it because it was huge seller. Trouble was, the govt passed a regulation saying the sausage had to be heated five degrees hotter during manufacture. They were coming armed for a final confrontation with the guy but he had already snapped and was armed and waiting. The end result -- a government sponsored blood bath.

We were once in the same CLE class on intellectual property in business transactions. Very small group of people gathered in a mid-town skyscraper, very dry subject matter. Something I highly doubt he'd ever use in his legal practice. He was probably trying to get the requisite credits in before deadline.

It was surreal watching him poke around getting coffee and donuts with everyone. Nobody spoke to him (I really wanted to, but didn't have the chutzpa). Then he proceeded to sleep through the entire day's worth of presentations. Straight up, head down on his chest, sleep through everything.

RIP Mr. Mayor.

LOL. My brother got his second great toe amputated yesterday and it was much more involved procedure than the first so I had lots of worries. Anyways, it has turned out (so far) pretty well.

He saw the staff doctor today.

177 Re the sidebar story about the DEA and electronic prescription records: I bet this is the kind of issue that Obama's campaign used expertly in their re-election microtargeting. Because it's very much a wedge issue but only for small segments of the population, it's one where knowing who to promote it to and who not would be highly useful.

For example, Romney (or whatever GOP candidate) could have sent it to ACLU types that support Obama, not shotgunned it to law-and-order types who support the GOP and hate the ACLU. The reaction of low-information voters will depend on whether their hot-button is "personal privacy" or "drugs," as they won't get all the details and will use those two to map it into their brains. Is the Obama administration getting tough on drugs, or is it violating privacy so as to know some of the most critical information about everyone?

I personally support the ACLU's position here: if a paper record is private, then that privacy should absolutely extend to an electronic version. But the point I'm making is not about the issue but about the way it works and doesn't work as a motivator for votes and campaign contributions.

I had a cousin contract a staph infection while in hospital. His leg tripled in girth and blew out all of his staples. *Very* ugly looking.

The hospital bro is at is pretty good but staph is a major problem at all hospitals.

As for the anti-bacterial agents, we used to use a soap called Phisohex (containing hexachlorophene, now considered a carcinogen). After the Times Beach, MO debacle it was taken off the market OTC but strangely enough can still be used by medical professionals. Al Gore, the FDA and lots of other alphabet agencies have restricted the use of all sorts of great products. I hate the fuckers. They used to make stuff called liquid lead (that actually contained lead) that worked great but was taken off the market. If the liquid lead, Phisohex and every other substance I used when I was young were truly carcinogenic enough to be of concern I'd have three eyes by now.

192 Hey guys, I just want to stop in and defend Glen Johnson a bit - he is the Boston Globe reporter who is going to work for John Kerry at State. Glen and his family once lived across the street from me when he was the Globe's DC reporter. He is a really, reallygreat person and Ihonestly have no idea what his personal political views are. He really is a student of the political process and covers it as objectively as anyone I have seen. He is a family guy with two sons who were Little League stars. He and his wife were active in our school PTA. His proudest possession was a family photo with President Bush. I had plenty of conversations with him about politics, even after he went back to Boston, and never detected any liberal bias. One reason he stuck around the Globe as long as he did was because he is a real professional.

Kerry approachedGlen about the job, not the other way around. He immediately went on leave while he was considering the offer, just so there would be no hint of bias. I don't thinkhe ever had any plans to work for the government. But it's a hell of an opportunity to work for a guy he does know, travel the world, and also the Globe is in financial trouble and who knows how long he was going to have a job there. His boys are in college now and he has bills to pay.

I know this looks likt the typical liberal-reporter-goes-to-work-for-liberal-politician story, but it really isn't.

Koch explained his plans in 2008 to the Associated Press:

The marker will bear the Star of David and a Hebrew prayer, “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.” It also will be inscribed with the last words of journalist Daniel Pearl before he was murdered by terrorists in 2002: “My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.”

I didn't know that about Phisohex. But I do remember how pissed my dad was when they took the trace amount of mercury out of NP. (Circa late '70s, IIRC.) It would usually take 1 or 2 doses to cure athlete's foot, and it was also deadly to plantar's warts. Ah, the good old days...

I have a story, but we're day-walking here. It's almost too filthy for the ONT.

Here's a nasty hospital detail: Everything in "modern" hospitals is stainless steel. For cleanliness, no? But the traditional hardware was brass, or brass-plated. And in brass hardware is a lot of copper and zinc. Almost all bacteria, and even some viruses, cannot abide those elements. Medicines and ointments are full of them.

The stainless steel is shiny, but offers no such protection. A British med journal did a survey on this some years ago, and was shocked. Newer not better?

The brass and copper finishes don't contain enough to fight disease in the quantities you're going to find them in hospitals (usually). They're also much softer/weaker than stainless steel.

You can go after stainless steel several times a day with some of the most caustic anti-bacterial substances known, and it'll be fine for years and years. Not so much with brass and copper.

This is just a guess, but it's not a complete WAG.

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An 8th grader allegedly brought a 9-inch butcher knife and a
bad attitude to a school in Brooklyn last Tuesday. It took more than a
week to get him suspended.

Now an honor student who says she was threatened by him is too afraid to go to class.

"He had asked me out and I had told him no thank you, I'm not
interested and he told me I would regret what I told him, and I would
pay for what I said," Lisa Rivera said.

Louis Rivera keeps an extra close watch over his 14-year-old
daughter, Lisa. It's all because of what happened last Tuesday when she
was one of several students allegedly threatened by a classmate who had a
butcher knife in his book bag.

The Department of Education said the incident was reported to school
officials. But parents weren't notified until six days later when a
letter was sent from the principal.

fine and is expected to be released from the hospital tonight, reports
the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A fellow student is in custody, and
police think a specific dispute between the two of them led to the
shooting. Also of note: Police say an armed school resource officer—of
the type the NRA is pushing—disarmed the suspect minutes after the
shooting, though he happened to be off-duty at the time, reports AP.

Don't we already have laws forbidding 14-year-olds from walking around with guns?

Wayne LaPierre needs to jump on this and pimp this hard and fast like there's no tomorrow. The MFM can't just embargo this, they have to report on the shooting and how the shooter was stopped. Everything works in the NRA's favour if LaPierre tells this right.

sounds like they are gonna blame PKK, Kurdish People's Party, a separatist group that want to form their own Kurdish nation. Big time communists, and do most of the terror in Turkey. Have for decades.

Lots of Kurds in northern Iraq too, sitting on Iraq's oil, and sympathetic to the PKK. Lots of Kurds in Syria too, just over the Kurdish/Turkish border. Remember that town that straddled the border and now has a wall and a ton of Turkish military now? A Kurdish town. Turkey does NOT want Syria's Kurds pouring into Turkey because of the civil war.

Well, appears PKK has really stepped up attacks this year. Wonder why? Turks really, really hate the Kurds.

372 When owners who are not looking for new employees were asked to evaluate eight potential reasons they are not doing so, overall business conditions headed the list as usual, including not needing new employees at this time (with 81% indicating this as a reason), worries that revenues or sales won’t justify adding more employees (74%), and worries about the current status of the U.S. economy (66%).

However, 61% of owners pointed to worries about the potential cost of healthcare, 56% to worries about new government regulations, and 55% to worries about cash flow or the ability to make payroll. Thirty-two percent point to it being hard to find qualified employees.

At the bottom of the list, but still at a surprisingly high level, 30% of owners say they are not hiring because they are worried they may no longer be in business in 12 months. This is up from 24% who had the same worry in January 2012.

If we did a full-out assault on democrats and the educational system, highlighting how they let inner city utes stay illiterate to buy off the teacher's unions, you could change the black vote (and a good bit of the hispanic vote) in one cycle.

The ads would make the left howl racism and would necessarily need to be pretty hard hitting, but that's what is needed.

At the very least, it would bring a message to the young and naive who lean left now. Some might just wake up to honest advertising.

For the assembled 'rons, Diplomad on Chuck "Fuck the Jews" Hagel:

I am disgusted beyond words.

This is a man who openly consorted with the enemies of the United States, openly gave comfort and support to those enemies while fellow Americans were on the battlefield fighting those enemies, lied about his service in SE Asia, and, to top it off, has shown no particular knowledge about or understanding of the role of the United States in the world. With Jane Fonda, he was our generation’s version of Lord Haw-Haw, Tokyo Rose, and Ezra Pound all rolled into one; unlike those other traitors, and along with Jane Fonda not only did he pay no penalty for supporting the enemy in a time of war, he prospered financially and politically.

He is now to be our Secretary of State.

One could expect no less of today’s Democratic Party.

Where, however, were the Republicans? Except for a tiny grouping of three–Cruz, Cornyn, and Inhofe–the Republicans went along with this travesty. Even Tea Party darling Marco Rubio voted “Yea.”

I guess loyalty is to membership in the Senate club, not to the country and our dead.

Rubio's dead to me, and he ought to be dead to the base, as well.

Great money making venture, and if ace sold it on Amazon through his Amazon link, he'd get paid twice!

I remember when I first commented here. Ah, those were salad days. The future was bright, Bammy had just barely been elected, we weren't looking at another four years of increasingly bloody ass rape from the gubmint...

Good days, good days.

Okay, the story:

I was monitoring the cleanup of the EOD range (for human remains) at Eaker AFB. It was a months long cleanup so I got to know several of the EOD techs pretty well. Didn't hurt that I was an Army brat and liked things that went boom and guns and stuff either. So I had lots more of their confidence than my co-workers.

So one EOD tech started reminiscing with his buddy about the time they got kicked off a transport plane. The story I wrangled out of them was they had nothing to do so they decided to check out the load of a cargo plane that had recently arrived. In it they found artillery barrels smashed through windshields of jeeps and a bunch of other damaged stuff. It was obvious to the techs the plane was loaded in a big hurry for a quick bug out.

And speaking of bugs, every vehicle was chock full of insect repellant cans, mostly used. When the EOD techs started talking to either the guards or the plane's crew about the combination of the loading technique and the bug spray cans they were told to go away and keep their mouths shut.

Turns out, this was within 24 hours of Dellums calling for a fact finding mission to Nicaragua to see if there was any US military equipment in Nicaragua. They did, indeed, form a group that visited Nicaragua about four days later. And they didn't find anything.

405 Hey, MP4, when's the next Theda Bara mystery coming out?

There's the million dollar question. I've had a massive writers' and (especially) emotional block for months now, so the short answer is, "God only knows." But e-mail me through my nic and I can give you a sneak preview of some of the stuff that has been written.

409 I think that is for Kerry because as far as I know Hagel of the Bagel IQ has not escaped committee.

411 Yep, Jean-Francois, not Chuck. I need another cupof coffee.

My disgust at Rubio, however, stands.

412 under Obamacare the cheapest health insurance plan available in 2016 for a family will cost $20,000 for the year.

OK, other people have already mentioned this but take a look at the date - 2016. This is the year of the next presidential election. Listen up everybody, if you don't want to pay this amount you better vote Republican. Whoever s/he is they will not penalize you for simply breathing.

Posted by: Decaf at February 01, 2013 11:58 AM (NmvvV)

413 Welllll, Kerry's first day at his new job will be surrendering to whoever tried to blow up our Embassy in Ankara

Posted by: Thunderb at February 01, 2013 12:02 PM (Dnbau)

414 Well I am not that upset over Kerry at State. He is a lazy idiot who thinks he is smarter than everyone else. TFG has been running State Department by remote control since day one, cutting Hillary out. So all the foreign policy disasters are Democrat owned.

Hagel, the nominal R and willing patsy, on the other hand would be running the big stick while taking orders from TFG. And overseeing TFG's retrenchment of the military's commitments and draw downs. So stripping that fig-leaf of bi-partisianship from TFG is far more important.

415 Republicans must]/b] be the party of stupid. Before every recent election I kept thinking that they must have a section or staff for monitoring of conservative blogs for ideas or what not to do.

And after every election it comes out that the only person they take notice of is Karl Rove and his little white board.

Reince, it's free, take it and use it.

418 Here's a nasty hospital detail: Everything in
"modern" hospitals is stainless steel. For cleanliness, no? But the
traditional hardware was brass, or brass-plated. And in brass hardware
is a lot of copper and zinc. Almost all bacteria, and even some viruses,
cannot abide those elements. Medicines and ointments are full of them.

The
stainless steel is shiny, but offers no such protection. A British med
journal did a survey on this some years ago, and was shocked. Newer not
better?

Silver also has some awesome anti-bacterial properties, and it would not be too costly to silver-plate metal fittings in hospitals. Also, because silver tarnishes readily, any slacking-off by the cleaning staff would be readily apparent.
