You've already lived the good old days.

Quote of the Day

The Warsaw Rising, the uprisings at Treblinka and Sobibor, the various mutinies of brenners, were all born of hopelessness. But then utter hopelessness engenders not only resistance and uprisings but also a yearning to be executed as quickly as possible.

4 Progressives Futuristic Blues

Walter Russell Mead writes over at The American Interest writes on the Blue Social Model of the Progressive left and where it is likely to go in the future. It is an insightful examination of where Progressives believe society will, and ought to, go. It is well worth reading in its entirety. There are a few points, however, that deserve being expanded and commented upon. The Progressive left sees the inevitable death of the middle class, of the hated bourgeois and petite-bourgeois.

This is the best example for paying attention that I have ever heard.
First-year students at the Purdue Vet School were attending their first
anatomy class with a real dead cow.. They all gathered around the surgery
table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started
the class by telling them, "In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to
have two important qualities as a doctor. The first is that you not be
disgusted by anything involving the animal's body." For an example, the
professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the
cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth. "Go ahead and do
the same thing," he told his students.. The students freaked out,
hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a
finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it. When everyone
finished, the Professor looked at them and said, "The second most
important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked
on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. Life's tough but it's
even tougher if you're stupid."

43 Evening all. I'm home from the hospital. So far so good. This morning I still had the pain but it has subsided and now the only thing that hurts is the incision. The doctor thought I might have some of old pain for a few days. When he went in he discovered the MRI was junk. I still don't know what happened but he said there was no ruptured disc. He actually did a little exploratory sugery and freed up nerves and cleaned up the discs. I was under for almost 4 hours. Was sicker than a dog for many hours, but am home now and feeling much better. So keep praying that the pain is truly gone forever.

153 Psalm 73

Truly God is good to the upright,
to those who are pure in heart.[a]
2But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled,
my steps had well nigh slipped.
3For I was envious of the arrogant,
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4For they have no pangs;
their bodies are sound and sleek.
5They are not in trouble as other men are;
they are not stricken like other men.
6Therefore pride is their necklace;
violence covers them as a garment.
7Their eyes swell out with fatness,
their hearts overflow with follies.
8They scoff and speak with malice;
loftily they threaten oppression.
9They set their mouths against the heavens,
and their tongue struts through the earth. 10Therefore the people turn and praise them;
and find no fault in them.[c]
11And they say, “How can God know?
Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12Behold, these are the wicked;
always at ease, they increase in riches.
13All in vain have I kept my heart clean
and washed my hands in innocence.
14For all the day long I have been stricken,
and chastened every morning. 15If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
I would have been untrue to the generation of thy children.
16But when I thought how to understand this,
it seemed to me a wearisome task,
17until I went into the sanctuary of God;
then I perceived their end.
18Truly thou dost set them in slippery places;
thou dost make them fall to ruin.
19How they are destroyed in a moment,
swept away utterly by terrors!
20They are[d] like a dream when one awakes,
on awaking you despise their phantoms. 21When my soul was embittered,
when I was pricked in heart,
22I was stupid and ignorant,
I was like a beast toward thee.
23Nevertheless I am continually with thee;
thou dost hold my right hand.
24Thou dost guide me with thy counsel,
and afterward thou wilt receive me to glory.[e]
25Whom have I in heaven but thee?
And there is nothing upon earth that I desire besides thee.
26My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength[f] of my heart and my portion for ever. 27For lo, those who are far from thee shall perish;
thou dost put an end to those who are false to thee.
28But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
that I may tell of all thy works.

When you first try to do a backflip at a pool as a kid you get really, really scared. Your body shuts down and tries to force you *not* to do it.

It does that for a really good reason. We are poorly designed for backflips. Back of the head is, like, a really bad place to get hit.

How did your search for language learning software go? Some friends on facebook were discussing what was good, here's an exerpt from their discussion.

My white (emphasis on white haha) bf uses pimsleur to learn mandarin and swears by it - for good reason: after only 2 weeks he was already able to speak and understand more than my friends who had taken a year of Chinese in college. It's really good if you're an auditory learner,

Personally, am interested in picking up Pimsleur for Mandarin after looking into it. Rosetta Stone was one that I heard good things about previously, but people criticize it for not teaching the grammar/rules, though it got points for teaching vocabulary.

275 IRS predicts that the cheapest family insurance plan will be $20,000 per year in 2015.

http://cnsnews.com/news/article/irs-cheapest-obamacare-plan-will-be-20000-family

So, I assume that the current cost to insure a family of 5 must be at least $20,000 because President Obama predicted that costs would drop by $2,500 per family. And he's never mistaken or untruthful, right?

In case you missed the sarcasm, that looks like a price hike. The usual "family" numbers seem to be for a family of four, but the average for a family of four in 2012 was about $15,745. If I use $16,000 as an estimate for a family of five and apply an expected health care inflation rate of 3.3% (based on a quick Google search just now), in 2015 the expected number would be around $17,600 (well under that $20,000 number).

Hmm. The conventional wisdom is that we can never repeal Obamacare once it starts writing checks, but just maybe the people will notice the promises have not been kept.

Of course, the people will probably just pay the cheap fine (which goes to the government, not the insurance companies). Then all the insurance companies fail, we have an emergency, and hey presto! Our best friend for life Mr. Obama proposes single-payer health care as the solution to the emergency. I'm pretty sure that was the plan all along anyway.

276 All because we won't confront and fight the Left and media. Amazing. The Left has the Republicans so spooked we'll consign ourselves to hopelessness and lose our country before going out in the public square and calling them out for who they are. And it's so easy to do. Their ideas are idiotic and historically disproved, their public conduct is stupid and disgusting, they have no logic or persuasive skills. Yet they're routing us. Incredible. I guess we'll go down without even fighting.

280 In theme with the uprisings due to hopelessness portion of the ONT, I offer this:

PORTSMOUTH, Virginia (Reuters) - A man who admitted to strangling two fellow prison inmates and threatened to continue killing until he received the death penalty was executed in Virginia on Wednesday, the first time the state has used the electric chair in nearly three years.

Robert Charles Gleason Jr., 42, had said he wanted to be put to death despite attempts by his former court-appointed attorneys to halt the execution and have him undergo a mental competency evaluation.

Facing life in prison, this dude forced them to kill him. He killed a cellmate in 2009, warned them he would keep doing it, then killed another in 2010. He was executed on the 16th or 17th this year; I'll give him credit for choosing the electric chair, that can't be the most pleasant way to check out.

303 43 Evening all.
Posted by: jewells45 at January 31, 2013 10:39 PM (u25eL)

Jewells-I posted here last week or the week before to have a doctor you know well and trust recommend a neurologist. I am a chronic pain patient, it's my neck and have had MRIs and have never heard one doctor say that it was junk.
I hope you are fine, but surgery sucks and the longer your are out the longer it takes to get your strength back. I mean the longer you are out under anesthesia, that knocks the hell out of you. I hope they kept you in at least overnight?

I have had two neck surgeries and both times I had no choice but to spend the night. The first time was in April 2000, I was out for two hours and back to work two weeks later. The second time was in November 2004, after the election, so I could vote and helot George W Bush beat my former senator John F (aka Lurch) Kerry. I was out for more than four hours. I wasn't back at work every day until February. I worked from home for a few days a week and would go to the office for things I could not do from home.

Rest is what you need. I know from experience. Please rest and sleep as much as you want. You have to sleep to heal.

305 Anyone enjoying the History Channel's The Men Who Built America? It depicts the age of the robber baron, the late 19th century, and the rise of the titans of industry. It's narrated in somber, important tones by Campbell Scott.

I learned that William McKinley was installed by Morgan, Rockefeller, and Carnegie in 1896 to win the Presidency over the tireless defender of the less fortunate, William Jennings Bryan. He was their puppet and did their bidding...of course, the show didn't mention that he was a war hero, a successful governor, a devoted husband, and a successful litigator.

And when he was assassinated in 1901 by a deranged anarchist, they stated an absolute lie, depicting him as having lost his job due to Morgan acquiring his steel mill. In reality, he was a committed socialist who was inspired by the rhetoric of his day. Of course, McKinley's death led to the ascendancy of the great progressive TR, which was depicted as a great triumph against the industrialists.

This is the canon of American history.

Prefer the manga. Viz published it back in the '90's. Udon picked it up a few years ago, but only published about four volumes before stopping. The only other stuff I picked up from them was Apple and Robot.

Between the movies and the TV series, I kinda prefered the TV series, though my feeling aren't that strong, particularly since it has been a while since I've seen the movies.

353 I just read that Maet linked article about the EEOC and disparate impact.

Le Sigh. Truly, the inmates are running the asylum.

This same disparate impact 'theory' is also being used in our schools now to prevent disciplinary actions and expulsions from occurring. Hell, the administration announced they were going to do this like they were PROUD of it.

So. Are you a minority in a bad mood? Go ahead, take a swing at the teacher. Don't worry, TFG has got your back.

I can hunt up a linky on the new school policy if anyone even gives a shit.

355 You know, in keeping with the idea that one has to reach out directly to the LIV's, and bypass the running-dog Democrat lackey media, here is a suggestion:

Let the NRA buy some commercial time during the Super Bowl. A full minute, maybe two. Pricey, but do you ever get exposure. Sample script:

"Hello folks, I'm Wayne LaPierre, president of the largest civil rights organization in the USA, the National Rifle Association. What's that? You say we aren't a civil rights organization? We sure as Hell are. What right is more fundamental than the right to defend your own life? Freedom of speech, or freedom of association are kind of worthless if you are pushing up daisies because some crackhead cut your throat while robbing your home for money to buy more crack cocaine."

"Right now, a number of Democrat politicians and their celebrity hangers-on are making a concerted effort to deny you your Constitutional right to own a rifle like this one. (holds up AR-15) They are telling lies, calling it an "assault weapon", and claiming that it is basically the same as this military-issue assault rifle. (holds up M-16) Here is the difference. (cut to vid clip of infantryman, demo-ing single-shot, burst fire, and full auto capabilities of the weapon. See? That M-16 can fire 3-round bursts, or fire full-auto, like a machine gun, as well as fire single rounds. Here's a video of an AR-15 being fired: (cut to clip of small, cute, woman firing AR-15 at range, hitting target after target.) No burst-fire, no auto fire, just one "bang" each time she pulls the trigger. And notice something else, folks, that's a very small woman using that rifle, she only weighs 90 pounds soaking wet. But she is able to use it comfortably, because the AR-15 has a very light recoil. It doesn't hurt YOU to fire it, and that's a big bonus for small people, or people who tend to be afraid of guns as a rule. It's easy to become proficient with it, and it's fun to practice. But the Democrats want to ban these weapons, and make it harder for small people like that woman to have an effective means of self-defense. Does that seem fair to you?"

Get the message out there.

364 I think all of the manufacturers of anything defined by the communists as an "assault weapon" should redesign their websites. The should add a category for "assault weapons" and anything capable of full auto or bursts should be on that page. anything semi-auto and not used as an assault weapon by the military should be under a "rifle" category.

take the word away from the communists.

Excellent! But I think we've already won that particular battle, for now. What's coming instead (and will be close to unstoppable) is required background checks for ALL sales, even private individual to private individual.

So add $50 to every transaction, plus build a nice list of buyers for some future 'efforts to contain gun violence'.

After all, no objects to reasonable restrictions, right? If the Grand Gun Grab has failed, time for the ole incrementalism approach.

You know, I think the American Interest piece has that all wrong.
I'd take the IPAB job just so I could constantly object to the entire framework.
I'd tell my grandkids "I singlehandedly help off a piece of ObamaCare." (Well at least tried.)

Sure we need to cut medicare costs, IPAB isn't going to be the least bit sucessful at it. (If that worked in the first place we'd never have a "doc fix."). I've always been leery of government "negotiating" the price of medicine, because they have the power to legislate it, so when they can't figure out how to make the math work they'll fall back on that.

The worst part is, I've met some of the people who might end up on that board. They're the last type of people you want in control of that much power. They talk a good game about patient choice, but when it comes down to it they'll make remarkably stupid decisions.

Well goodnight.

cthulhu:

They open at 3:00 and close up at 7:00PM, so cleanup should start by 6:30. I'm a bit behind schedule, and since one thing I need to do takes a couple of hours, if my prep and setup takes too long, I will have to get to it next week.

6:00PM sounds like a good choice, since I'll either be lightly loaded and hanging around, or finishing up.

I'm drunk. And depressed.

TFG just can't stop fucking with the decent, law-abiding folks, can he?

Can't stop demonizing people who just want to be left the fuck alone to carry on--with their jobs and lives, while respecting their neighbors' rights and property; with their choice of diet, lifestyle, defense and medical care, while paying their own way in the process.

I could go on...and I could scream!

"Live and let live" they said....yeah, right...

*sigh*

Thanks, folks. I hope we all find a way to deal, without going bonkers.

490 What's up fartknockers?

Local Seattle schadenfreude: To pay for replacing one of the two Lake Washington floating bridges (SR-520), the legislature decided they would toll the existing SR-520 floating bridge. So what do people do? Take the other floating bridge (I-90), if possible. Now with problems galore from cracking concrete replacement SR-520 pontoons ad nauseum, which generally do not fit the standard of fitness for a particular purpose when talking floating bridges, the SR-520 project is $1.4B in the hole and current ETA is two years out (with probably less than a year of work completed).

So what's an enterprising legislature to do? That's right, propose tolling the other floating bridge (I-90), leaving aside the fact that it is a federal highway, not a state, highway.

Now for the fun part. Seattle is roughly 60/40 liberal/conservative. The people that are going to have to bite it, because they use I-90,
to finance the SR-520 clusterfuck, are screaming bloody murder, they are asked to write down their concerns and submit them rather than voicing them in a public hearing, and the local liberal media is having hissy fits that the DOT/liberal government is responding to their FOIA requests with documents that have the juicy bits redacted (such as the costs of the replacement replacement pontoons and the rework).

I-90 is a major corridor, especially east-west with the Port of Seattle at the west end of I-90. So in addition to ticking off residents, employees, commuters, and other travelers that might never use SR-520, they are likely going to drive business to other local ports, potentially costing jobs.

But oh wait, we have Jay Inshlee to save us. We suck! But it is nice to hear the squealing when finally someone has come to gore their ox.

Perhaps I could ask John Roberts. He seems to be an expert Constitutional scholar on taxing things.

Actually, now that I think about it a bit more -- shouldn't EVERYONE not using either bridge be subject to a tax; you know, to be fair and stuff. There, problem solved.

I'm with you on the Stones overall, Gnubreed, but I'd put two or three of their songs in my top 200 list, probably. Don't have any particular burn re Springstein except re typical showbiz lefty fucktardness, but never rated him other than low average musically, either. Reasons for his "superstar" status elude me entirely.

508 Further tidbit on Indiana selling the turnpike I-80/90:
It is owned by the Indiana Finance Authority and operated by the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company, a joint-venture between Spanish Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte and Australian Macquarie Atlas Roads.

No mention of fed ownership.

511 And while I'm thinking about it, Indiana used to have the most ghetto toll road in my travels. Always a long wait to pay the toll. Then they privatized it, now its the Cadillac of toll roads. Meanwhile, in Ohio, the same toll road, you pull up to the booth, and the toll collector, who sees you coming for a half mile waits till you pull up and stop before bookmarking the page in her book, standing up from her chair, and taking your money.

Probably right for a one-night show at a private event. To record it? likely wouldn't happen...

536 531 Richard,

You're in a beautiful position job wise. As an ER nurse, your skillz are in demand across the country, though they may pay a bit less than CA. Then again, the cost of living in most of the rest of the country is a shit-ton lower as well.

You, sir, have very portable skills.

Thank you for your kind words. I have indeed the craft polished over 3 decades in and was just trying to break out in the Movie Industry for a break from and do lament the fact that this other job will not be as of today. I will tell you true, I am a DAMN fine nurse...yet I suffer from the decades of trying to be that good 24/7...anyone else of the M and M's who are of the craft will back my claim....so the loss of this work in the movie industry....hurt me.....what else can I say?

I wish her nothing but the best. Nursing is a very tough job. The challenge for this next generation will be to maintain the "Healing Art" in a growing Government dictum of paperwork and "Outside" influence of practice.
This will seem odd to her at first, yet if she stays, she will grow to hate this.

546 Then there's the Columbia River Crossing, the I-5 bridge between Vancouver WA and Portland OR. They keep insisting that we put light rail on it, despite the fact that the people in Vancouver have voted against it multiple times. AND the Army Corps of Engineers says the new bridge design is not tall enough for ships to pass under it, so they want a new design.
