Ted Cruz Plays Slap the Dummy

Ted Cruz may have sunk Hagel.

The Israel question won't hurt Hagel too much -- it's a niche question that only Jews and conservatives care about. Non-Jewish Democrats despise Israel and generally agree with Hagel's dark conspiracies about the "Jewish Lobby."

But Cruz might have made Hagel a very difficult for Democrats. Cruz played audio of Hagel agreeing with a questioner's premise that the US was "the world's bully," complimenting that sentiment as an "important observation" (or words to that effect).

Will our troops really be led by someone who calls them The World's Bully?

Little bonus on that question and response: Hagel said this on.. Al Jazeera.

Consider the politics there.

The left's counter-spin -- and they are already spinning like tops, all the "reporters" like Chuck Todd -- is that Hagel "merely accepted" the premise, he did not offer it himself. And, they say further, is someone appearing on Al Jazeera really required to dispute all premises he disagrees with?

But the same people have claimed that politicians are indeed required to dispute questioner's premises -- see, for example, the ruckus they made when Rick Santorum failed to object to the premise that Obama was a Muslim. And you of course remember all the media attacks in 2008 over McCain's/Palin's failure to silence every single dumb shout at a rally.

But now they're claiming someone can call the US (and its military, of course) "the world's bully" on Al Jazeera and Chuck Hagel can call this an "important observation" and that's okay because We Said.

Update: Here's the Al Jazeera clip in question.

It's won't end well.

Give him a few days to let the attention die down, and after a number of denials about a replacement and showy overt public support from Obama, Hagel will withdraw.

Your average LIV doesn't know SecDef from shinola and doesn't care. The only ones watching this right now are engaged individuals on BOTH sides, left and right.

The left hates Hagel, the right hates Hagel, and he's done NOTHING to disprove any of the arguments against him. If anything he's managed to reinforce every negative comment ever made about him. And he's done it in spectacular, mind-numbing fashion on live television. If the idiots in the Senate then choose to CONFIRM him, after his public display of incompetence, all the engaged people - left and right -- who have been watching him babble like a concussed turd will give their representatives merry hell from now until the next millenium.

Politicians are stupid, but even stupid people don't like having granola-eating hippies picketing outside their offices and calling them war criminals for five years because they confirmed an idiot like Hagel.

101 98 some of those southern dems may have pause about votin for this maroon

My guess is that the ones who will be fence-sitting are Pryor (AR), Landrieu (LA), Johnson (SD), Baucus (MT), and several other red-state Dims up this cycle.

104 re: "Give him a few days...Hagel will withdraw"

Because Jews.

Will be the story--not officially, but it'll be what's believed, and Hagel will be added to the list of Good People The Joos Have Destroyed In Their Quest To...Whatever.

And Bang Blondes.

Curiously, the paleocon "neocon"-haters I keep up with seem to be staying away from commentary on the hearing. Today's scene should be pissing them off. Hagel's getting yacked for saying dumb-guy versions of some of the stuff they sometimes say. But so far, nothing.

Left-sympathetic "libertarians" are all in on the "neocon war-boner" talk today, but the right-symps aren't. It's like they see there's some bamboozlin' going on, and they're leaning back and squinting at it.

Enlistments will definitely go down for American warriors like your son. What I'm afraid of are the people who will volunteer under the present leadership. With the culling of the warriors in the higher ranks, I'm beginning to wonder if this is the start of the buildup of Baraka's Homeland Security Force.

you read "The American Conservative?"

that's probably the most prominent publication whose "conservatism" is solely defined by Fear and Loathing of the Neocons/Likudniks/whatever other term. on every other issue it's liberal-lite, but you always sense that they're kinda bored talking about anything else.

Posted by: JDP at January 31, 2013 03:03 PM (60GaT)

115 In all fairness, the premise was not "America is a bully" but instead "the world thinks America is a bully." I'm don't necessarily agree with this premise either but there's a huge difference between the two.

116 so hagel went on al jazeera on tax payers money as a spokeperson for american interests and as a paid senator and ridiculed america as a bully , also advocating for softening stance on a nuclear arming Iran?

has he mentioned if america should be allowed borders ?

you know some things are just crazytown.

122 See what happens when you try to be a Maverick like McCain and Graham on the issues they care about? I despise all three of them equally but for different reasons.

McCain for his media whoring 'Maverick' personae and being pro-amnesty Senator from a border state. All that Mavericky selling out to the MSM for all those years and what did it net him?
Graham for offering amnesty to criminals which he's okay with because he's from the border state of South Carolina.
And Hagel because he's apparently just too stupid to get with the program.

124 Ace once again showing his ignorance or just outright lying to the morons.

The REASONS the Republican attacks on Hagel today are so savage sounding today are: 1. Hagel going to work for Obama is like betrayal of Omerta or something, just like it was for Huntsman, and just like it woulda been for Jed, and this is how that message gets conveyed, 2. before today it became clear that no D was going to put up any more than the most nominal formulaic Potemkin attack on Hagel, which means Obama got to them that he really really needs this because it's close close close, 3. we need to do WTF we can to get back foreign policy cred from the Kenyan Muslim, and 4. cuz we all been gittin' our butts kicked now for 3 months and the blood lust is up.

Posted by: somejoe at January 31, 2013 03:28 PM (SSWdi)

126 When Hagel's done they should nominate Sen. Durbin for Asst. SecDef.

Then all would be complete in the unity of policy.

131 ITS A TRAP!

Would the WH want exactly this to happen? Hagel (A Repub in name only) gets the crap kicked out of him by fellow R's. His nomination gets ash canned and TFG puts up someone farther to the left of Hagel with the WH tossing up their hands saying that this is further proof that they can't work with R's.

Posted by: Tony253 at January 31, 2013 03:53 PM (PryWG)

132 Not sure yet. Look for the spin this Sunday on the talking heads shows. If they talk about how horrible Hagel's performance was then watch out. If the WH decides to circle the wagons by sending protectors to spin the meeting then Hagel will probably squeak by if no other complications.

If Hagel's nomination is going to be defeated by Dems, the most likely place is the committee (less press coverage). Republicans can't really defeat Hagel on the floor but are laying out markers on unpopular national security policies that Hagel supports (and probably Obama as well). For example, no sanctions on Iran, anti-Israeli talk, and now how the U.S. is a bully etc. are not really popular positions in the U.S.

Each of these generally unpopular stances can reduce the electability of Dem. senators in specific situations either by pissing off campaign donors and/or voters. So you would need to analyze specific Dem. senators on the committee to determine the effects.

133 Ted Cruz is what conservatives WISHED Rubio was going to be like as a Senator. Rubio's schtick was easy when he was up against Charlie Crist.

Too bad Cruz was born in Canada.

134 Buzzfeed leaps to Hagel's defense by claiming the clip Cruz showed is 'out of context' and in no way does it show what Cruz claims it does:

135 From what I've read, Cruz is a U.S. citizen by birth, having been born in Calgary to an American-born mother.Because his mother had U.S. citizenship at the time of his birth, it transferred to him on foreign soil.
