Happy Thursday.

Yeah, about that "heckling" business, I really like the second video embedded here.

Bad sign: insurance companies in the individual market have stopped guaranteeing annual premium rates. Now they're going month to month, and it's not because they expect premiums to be going down.

Oh, and there's a "glitch" in Obamacare that will price some families out of the health insurance market. Democrats were apparently hoping the IRS would undo the law via regulation, but the regs were issued yesterday and no luck. The most IRS says it will do is decline to fine families who can't afford insurance under the mandate, which, uh...seems to me does away with the mandate.

Jim Pethokoukis pushes back on the Democrats' silly idea that 'austerity' is responsible for Obama's disastrous economy.

8 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, January 31, 2013. On this day in 1606 Guy Fawkes was drawn, hanged, and quartered. His body parts were then sent to all parts of the kingdom to be viewed as an example of what happens to traitors. Instead of taking head of this would be traitors used his head to make hideous masks to terrorize citizens throughout history. So why did we quit taking those people and cutting their guts out?

26 Morning, all. And thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. I hope everything went well with the mrs, Vic.

Apologies again for the little meltdown yesterday. I’m just tired of the whole “the media is gleefully biased, what can we do?” mindset that offers no solution. Absent violence, I still like the idea of a Breitbart Wiki that has all personal information on these Party tools – addresses, marriage and family info, number of DUIs, assault charges, donations made to the Party, times visiting the White House and so on. There should be no excuse for any GOP pol to go on a “Face the Nation” or CNN, get blindsided with a “why are you in favor of killing children with assault rifles?” question and not be able to respond with a “well, Brian, that’s about the sort of shallow thinking I expect from a college dropout, so I reject your whole biased premise. But if you really want to talk tough questions, how many judges did you have to pay off to get those 2008 child porn charges dismissed?” Punch back twice as hard, as they say.

Anyway – yesterday Sven asked for a couple of Chaplin stories, so I am to please.

Chaplin had been touring around America since about 1910, when he was attached to the Fred Karno vaudeville company. In the fall of 1912, he came to the attention of the Keystone studio and was signed for $150 per week. His first few shorts either repeated his Karno "drunk" roles or cast him as a stereotypical English ne'er do well. It wasn't until he stepped before the cameras as the proto-Little Tramp in Kid Auto Races at Venice that he began to catch on as a public fave. He left Keystone for the Essanay studio in Chicago in 1915, and it was here that the character of the Tramp - as seen in the shorts His New Job, A Night Out and, in particular, The Tramp – was developed and turned Chaplin into the most famous movie performer of his time (and, perhaps, of all time).

Chaplin was not known for his humility. The story goes that, years later, while he was searching for a story (this was around the time of City Lights), he called in two United Artists executives and announced he'd decided on the subject for his next movie: the life of Christ. "Think of it!" he crowed, as the executives looked at each other nervously, "who better to play the part of the Son of God than the world's greatest comedian? And, since I'm an athiest, I can be completely neutral about the subject."

The executives shunted Chaplin off with some soft words and the discussion went on to other matters. Finally, the meeting was over and Chaplin left on other business. The executive pair were left alone in the office. "He's right, you know," one finally said. "It'd be the greatest movie ever made. But can you see the credits - Charlie Chaplin as Jesus Christ? We'd be strung up by our necks before we shot a foot of film."

Another story: Chaplin, out of Little Tramp costume, was not very recognizable. With a thin, somewhat pallid face and a shock of grey hair, anyone familiar with the quick, dark-eyed, moustachio’d hero of The Kid would never notice him in mufti. One afternoon in Paris, Chaplin took advantage of this invisibility to walk along the Left Bank. But as he was strolling along, he suddenly had an urgent call of nature. At the time, Chaplin couldn't speak French, so when he stopped to ask a porter the way to the men's room, he groaned and wiggled and rolled his eyes, trying to pantomime his predicament, but only succeeded in scaring the porter away. He tried the same trick on a cabbie, who only laughed at his antics.

By this time, a crowd had gathered around Chaplin, laughing and applauding his ever more frantic signals. Suddenly, a shopkeeper touched him on the shoulder and asked, in broken English, "Do you need a job? You could draw in the customers for me." "I don't need a job," Chaplin gasped. "I need a toilet!" At that, the shopkeeper's eyes went wide. "Charlot!" he screamed in happy recognition. "Charlot!"

Chaplin wrenched himself out of the man's grip, dashed into his store and found a restroom. He slammed the door shut, locked it and attempted to relieve his bladder. But the shopkeeper and the crowd followed him in, shouting his name in French and pounding on the men's room door.

They broke down the door, then tore down the walls. Before they could strip the clothes from Chaplin's back, he managed to escape their clutches and raced back to his own hotel, where he luxuriated in the comfort, privacy and safety of his own toilet.

After that, as you can imagine, he was always very careful about his casual strolls around town.

So, like identity theft and unlawful use of a stolen Social Security number, the mandate will be enforced selectively.

I might have to stop noting the similarities to 1930s Germany; the Nazis were open and honest about which subsets they intended to destroy--the wrote their laws as such and then they followed them. This group writes cryptic laws and applies them capriciously.

51 RE : "The most IRS says it will do is decline to fine families who can't afford insurance under the mandate"

So...the whole point of Obamacare was the eleventy-twenty million people who didn't have health insurance, and would be taxed for not having insurance..

..because the eleventy-twenty million people without health insurance were going to the emergency room for treatment and not paying for it...

..so now the IRS won't impose the penalty/tax on people who don't have insurance...which seems to negate the entire reason Obamacare was passed in the first place, yes?

52 #40 I operate under the theory that anyone who suddenly starts taking squirrely positions, "matures" in his views, or stabs us in the back is being blackmailed.

Example#1 was Newt when he was Speaker. We KNOW there was dirt on him, and he got called to a meeting with Clinton. Then we never heard another word about the China missile sale, even though he had said he was going to bring it up every day until questions were answered.

Example #2 is George Voinovich, who stabbed us in the back by not voting to confirm Bolton, keeping the nomination from moving out of committee. Does anyone remember him CRYING and not really giving a good reason? Blackmail, if you ask me.

I could go on. Anyway, this is what I think is the basic reason for all of this crap. Not compromise or misguided decisions or even bribes. Blackmail.

The leftists are sometimes too clever by half. When a law is almost 3,000 pages long and probably written over the course of the last several years if not decades by perhaps dozens of people representing different interests, intended to be sprung on us when the time was right, there are bound to be so many inconsistencies and Catch 22's that the whole thing will be unworkable.

Then again, with the IRS and a government that is drunk on power, their answer will always be, we'll tell you what the law says. This is especially true now that our only means of redress - the Judiciary - is in the pocket of the Executive and Legislative branches.

Thank you John Roberts. Vayr gehargit.

60 - "Bad sign: insurance companies in the individual market have stopped guaranteeing annual premium rates."

Obviously. Since Obamacare first was enacted costs have been skyrocketing.

- "The most IRS says it will do is decline to fine families who can't afford insurance under the mandate, which, uh...seems to me does away with the mandate."

You're missing the huge elephant in the room. The mandate always was a farcical bait and switch. It's cheaper to pay the fine than to buy the insurance. And with so many people not working the IRS won't have the wages to garnish in any event.

Obamacare was set up by the Dems as the precursor to single payer. The Dems know full well the system will fail. They want that. That will be the "crisis" upon which they'll make their final push for a fully nationalized system.

- "Jim Pethokoukis pushes back on the Democrats' silly idea that 'austerity' is responsible for Obama's disastrous economy."

Pethokoukis is wasting his time. The people who directly voted for Obama neither know nor care about the economy. The people who indirectly voted for him, by not voting, might know about it, but deep down they don't care about it.

You are correct, sir. However, they may have miscalculated, in that I find it impossible to believe that pols would now vote for something that's even worse than SP lite, not because they don't want to, but because the people have seen a glimpse of what's in store if it's approved.

OTOH, I didn't think it possible that BO would be reelected, so what do I know.

70 Democrats have committed to throwing even more money away in 2014 trying to beat my Congressman, Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-. They beat him once in the wave year of 2006 and keep thinking they own this district now, but it got more Republican after redistricting and they couldn't find a decent candidate to run last year. But then again, Dems know they can't get back to the majority without taking back a couple of the 6 seats in PA they have lost since 2006.

71 [T]here's a "glitch" in Obamacare that will price some families out of the health insurance market. Democrats were apparently hoping the IRS would undo the law via regulation, but the regs were issued yesterday and no luck.

On the contrary, a 3000 page law with contradictory language is perfect leftist legislation. There will always be gray areas that require the liberal courts to "resolve" or that can be used to selectively practice lawfare against capitalist evil-doers.

78 I work in IT for a huge health insurance company and I have been telling my family to look at what your premiums were before ACA and then multiply them by 10 or 12 and that will give you some idea of what ACA will cost and that does not figure into the equation the GOTCHA taxes like the 3% you will have to fork over when you sell your home. Since ACA we have had to add about 200 million to our IT budget just to remediate systems and that does not count the cost of being told by Sebielius and her merry henchmen that the reg will say one thing and then find out that they tweaked it or just plain wrote it poorly to mean something else entirely. Smaller health insurance companies that served niche markets in small states cannot do this--they were already underwater on ANSI 5010 and ICD-10 IT costs...we stopped counting at 50 million on ANSI 5010 alone...we literally stopped attributing costs to that project's budget even though the project was far from done and started charging other budgets.

The saddest thing about ACA is that we took an imperfect system of dividing up health care costs for the indigent or underinsured and made it an impossibly expensive mess, which will still leave tens of millions of people uninsured.

As we say over and over and over again on this site, "Math, how does it work again?"

88 The other thing about health insurance companies is our reserves. We are required to keep reserves that would allow us to pay the maximum amount of claims that might be incurred by each member over a year. All health insurance companies have to keep this money on hand for that, yes, we can invest it, but, if we don't have it, they shut our doors. It amounts to tens of billions of dollars. The Dims in Congress have been salivating over that money for decades--they want it and they have been scheming to take it just like they did all the money paid into Social Security.

89 Good move for the fascists. Selectively enforce the law based on class. And it makes sense due to the fact that everyone who supports the law is unaware that it is just a mandate to buy insurance. They thought it was free healthcare. As for being designed to fail - you mean allowing the population to skip buying health insurance except for while they need it is a design to fail scenario? !!!!!!!!!!!TF

Posted by: Whatev at January 31, 2013 07:49 AM (A7Wh1)

90 #89, it is worse than that, it is a selectively applied tax because some citizens are exempt from the mandate. I, for example, can opt out because I am part Cherokee. The Amish and Muslim can opt out for religious reasons, particularly the Muslims because it is haraam to buy insurance because your are not submitting your fate to Allah. But, the Catholics can't be allowed to use their beliefs about abortion to decide what will be in their sponsored health plans.

I'm going to call my insurance man today, but when I spoke with him last week he told me about a different wrinkle in SCOAMTTcare.
He says I'd better take my renewal rate on our individual plan instead of shopping it because as of Jan 2014, only plans in force since Oct 2010 will be grandfathered for guaranteed issue and community rating. Which means not being rated for claims history/pre-existing, which was the whole point.

128 There was a piece in Pajamas Media a week or so ago (should've marked it) that said the whole thing will collapse like an empty enema bag if people just wait to buy insurance when they get sick.

I remember a bunch of years back when you HAD to provide an insurance company name and policy number on your auto registration or else you could not renew -- here in Pennsylvania. I had insurance, but I did not feel like walking out to the car to look up the number. So I made up a number, and continued to do that for years. Never heard a peep. I suspect it will be the same way on income tax returns, put a name and number here, with no ability to check the information. People are gonna do what they have to do, and for every mousetrap our 'betters' build through legislation, people will still find a way to get to the cheese.

btw: The state continued to have a problem with uninsured motorists for... well, they still do.

Here in Oklahoma, we have to give them a proof of insurance form provided by the insurance company. The other half of the duplicate form goes in the glove box. You must produce it, your license, and registration if stopped by a cop of some ilk.

All clear?

Anyway, to piggyback a bit on last night's post about the MFM not covering the Menendez kiddie-rape story: the story was on CNN (spit) this morning as I walked to my office. The sound was down, so I couldn't hear what was being said, but the identifying chiron only mentioned his name, not his party. As well, the pictures CNN chose to illustrate the story showed the pre-teen pink sleazebag looking as respectable as possible, with neat, close-cropped hair and a decent suit and tie, all giving the impression that he was a salt-of-the-earth, church-going man - in other words, A Republican.

Bias by simple perception.

When losing, liberals constantly change the subject (I recently had a liberal try bluffing his way out of an argument with French), we just need to go on the offensive. Media embargoing a story? No problem, insert it into ANY interview.

223 Ugh, I hate that. The only e-mail I HATE getting is the one that says
"Was there supposed to be an attachment to that?" or some worse,
snarkier version.

I always try to be nice when reminding someone the attachment is missing. I mean really, that is the piece of petty that you decide to deal out to your fellow humans?

226 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing
new claims for unemployment benefits bounced off five-year lows last
week, pulling them back to levels consistent with modest job growth.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits
increased 38,000 to a seasonally adjusted 368,000, the Labor Department
said on Thursday. The prior week's claims figure was unrevised.

Spin baby, spin!!! It didn't increase, comrades, it bounced off of lows!!! And higher unemployment = modest job growth

It depends on my relationship with whoever sent the email. Some people I'm comfortable enough with for some gentle teasing. Most of the time I'll wait a bit before I send the, "I didn't receive an attachment" email, and keep it strictly professional.

The thing about it is--email is forever and you never know just where it will be forwarded. If it is a friend, I usually just send an IM on the chat function of our email. That also stays on the servers forever, but, you have to exert some effort to save a chat to do anything with it.

238 Yeah, that NYT story in the headlines?

I read it that the reason things are so bad in Chicago with its restrictive gun laws is because the state and everyone else aren't as strict, since criminals can get firearms in other parts of the state THAT'S the reason things as so bad in Chicago.

Should have known...

Posted by: Catmman at January 31, 2013 11:37 AM (C8XlI)

239 The only problem with the Chicago theory being why isn't the crime rate in all other places as high as Chicago. It should all even out if it's just those mean old suburban gun shops letting those guns that, apparently, self shoot with no human pulling the trigger in Chicago. And, per Hefner, there is apparently a global warming cloud floating over Chicago only that leads the poor youth there astray.

Also briefly mentioned that there seems to be a trend of setting up operations in areas with already downward crime trends and then claiming those trends are a success of their programs. Hmmm.

Should be renamed the Fail Train.

241 Got this on Legal Insurrection:

“Obama, Romney, and GOP Technology: A Chilling Analysis”.

Obama's people decided that instead of trying to combine third-party software services that were not designed to work together, that they would build their own giant data integration tool that would combine everything every part of the campaign knew about every voter, donor, and volunteer into one giant system that all applications could tie into. There is no way to overstate how powerful this was. Every email, every phone call, every web advertisement, every website visit, every Facebook connection, and every door knocker would know everything about everyone and could do individual personalization on the spot. This was what "Project Narwhal" was. It is the holy grail of all political activity. It improved efficiency across the entire country and it probably, over time, won the election for Obama. I don't say that carelessly. (Now you understand what 50 analytics guys can do full-time when they have every piece of data about everybody in America, eh?)
