10 Kyriarchy

What is “kyriarchy” and just what does it have to do with core ethos of the radical Progressive left? “Kyriarchy” is the framework through which the Progressive left views race, gender, class, and sexuality; and it is the framework from which they plan the destruction of America and the building of their fevered visions of utopia. The Progressive left sees people as simply categories, as mere classifications. It is integral to how they think, and integral for what they plan on doing.

Her - 1. Again, it was a joke. 2. Again, I was not speaking in terms of LEGAL symonyms, but rather linguistic synonyms. 3. Do you have to take a competency test to own a gun in Florida? Cause in Ohio you sure don't. Is there a written portion and a portion in which you demontrate minimal competency in operating one? Again, no such thing in Ohio. 4. Really? YOu feel the Sarah Palins, Ann Coulters, and Michelle Bachmans of the right wing is a move to the LEFT? I heartily disagree. 5. I know MANY gun owners. MANY. And most of them are for more stringent regulations. 5. I truly appreciate your engagement on this issue. I might not agree with you, but I am always open to discussion on important issues (even if it's via facebook)

Another gun nut like me Most gun owners are for more stringent regulations? I'm assuming you're talking about water-gun owners??????? Yeah, my gun-owning fb friends continue littering my newsfeed with gun control legislation demands. I'm getting sick of it!

Her - Nope. I'm talking about my gun-owning law-enforcement friends.

Here's the thing, I do not think allowing me to own a gun - as a person who has never been around them or shot them - would be wise. I feel similarly about letting other folks similarly situated to me have guns. However, if there was a requirement of a class (like there is for CCWs), I would be more comfortable.

101 My response - I've never met any gun owner that's in favor of stricter regulations. And I have multiple, very close friends that are members of law enforcement. Family as well.

You're not comfortable with guns? Don't want one? Great. Feel free to not have one. I am comfortable with them. I do use them and practice with them and become comfortable with them. Your uncomfortableness should not deprive me or anyone else of their rights. People like you, people that aren't comfortable with guns, DON'T BUY GUNS. That'd be like me saying "You know, I'm scared to death of spiders. I don't like them, I don't know anything about them, I don't know how to feed or care for them...I think I'll go buy a tarantula."

Btw, stricter gun control laws do not make places safer. Actually, they make them less so. See Chicago. Also see every mass shooting event for the past 20 years other than Giffords. They all took place in gun free zones.

Again, you are arguing things that aren't in evidence. Where is the evidence that there are all these uniformed, undisciplined gun owners out there causing havoc?

As for the Republicans. Ann Coulter isn't a politician, she's a commentator. And she's been screaming the praises of Chris Christie and Mitt Romney for a year. Those aren't exactly right wing power houses. Sarah Palin is to the right. Again, not a politician, a commentator. Bachmann is also to the right. She's also got some crazy issues that have nothing to do with conservative politics. See the Gardasil fiasco. You want to see which way the party is leaning? Look to it's leaders and Presidential candidates. McCain, Romney, Boehner, McConnell, etc. Those are not hardcore Conservatives.

I'm also wondering if she's so adamant about this because she's trying to convince herself that she, as a single woman (I assume this) can be perfectly safe and fine as she is. I personally don't own a gun because before I do I'm going to make sure that I know what I'm doing, but the SO is law enforcement and carries everywhere. I spent--honest to God--the next thirty minutes blowing my nose, and with every forced exhalation, anywhere from two to six tablespoons' worth of sick green goo came out of my nostrils.

Eventually, I felt safe enough to go back to bed.

Wasn't particularly unpleasant, as disgusting bodily fluid emanations go, but wow that was one weird experience.

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Monroe, NC 1957 is one i like to point out.

If you don't know about it a brief summary-

In Monroe, North Carolina, in 1958, Mr. Robert Williams reopened a local chapter of the (back when they were actually worth a damn) NAACP. He enlisted the help of Dr. Albert Perry, a physician and leader in the Black community. These two men created an active and robust local chapter of the NAACP and worked for equal rights for the Black population.

However, Monroe was KKK country. The Klan included in its membership the sheriff, most police officers, several judges and every elected official in the county. As the Black population grew more organized the Klan became more brutal.

Mr. Williams was a former U.S. Marine who understood that force must be met with force, so in 1960 he turned to the nation’s oldest civil rights organization for help. He applied to the National Rifle Association for a local charter. The NRA (RACISTS!!!) issued him the charter and supplied firearms training material.

elle- Thanks. I must confess I am not conversant with Dubliners. I sort of saw our story as being kind of a Walter Mitty type tale. Since we don't know for sure what happened to my F-I-L, each chapter sort of took on a "What if ...?" aspect as in "what if he went back to his first wife". Some of them are bittersweet or downright sad, while others are just plain silly. I particularly like the chapter where Seamus is kidnapped by aliens- (one legal, one illegal), and helps them fix their space ship.I'm going to have some free promotional days so it will be free on Kindle- sometime next week, maybe on this upcoming weekend.

I'm A Man You Don't Meet Everyday Lyrics

Oh my name is Jock Stewart, I'm a canny gun man
And a roving young fellow I've been
So be easy and free when you're drinking with me
I'm a man you don't meet every day

I have acres of land, I have men at command
I have always a shilling to spare
So be easy and free when you're drinking with me
I'm a man you don't meet every day

So come fill up your glasses with brandy and wine
Whatever it costs I will pay
So be easy and free when you're drinking with me
I'm a man you don't meet every day

Well I took out my dog and him I did shoot
All down in the the country Kildare
So be easy and free when you're drinking with me
I'm a man you don't meet every day

I must confess I don't know who Walter Mitty is. (I'm embarrassed). Dubliners is a book that consists of a series of very short -story chapters unrelated to each other except that in each story/chapter the central character has an epiphany of some sort. There is no conclusion except that the reader is left to piece together the individual epiphanies and figure out the point of the book. it sounds like you do the same thing except from a mystery unsolved angle.

Critical
Race Theory? Isnt that the idea that there is some point in time that
no one has been able to identify at which sucking obama's dick on the
air non stop without breathing is a race between getting him off or
going into critical blood oxygen depletion where you end up with
irrepairable brain damage? My understanding is all the journolists who
were working on that theory passed that tipping point unexpectedly and
cant exactly identify when it was...

372 I must confess I don't know who Walter Mitty is.

*****

That description fits to an extent. Walter Mitty was a character who was sort of henpecked, but while waiting for his wife to finish shopping would lapse into reveries where he was the hero, a fighter pilot or the like. So yeah, sort of episodic chapters. I do try to weave them all together with a thread of the truth, but each chapter can sort of stand on it's own as a short story. I certainly don't claim that it is a fine literary masterpiece and I don't know how much broader appeal it might have. It was just a story that kind of told itself- with a lot of suggestions and help from Mrs. Muldoon.

The resistance from anti gun nuts will be furious if you tried to attach that brochure be included in every gun sale I bet though. So it should be introduced as a law to point out safety is not their goal.

My give a shit meter for them went out a couple of years ago when tornadoes blew through western Virginia and the JEF denied the area aid. Lucky for us McDonnell decided to use some of our state's budget surplus that he created for aid to those areas.
And the meter finally got thrown away last summer during that big derecheo or whatever when we were without power for a week in 100+ heat. Whole region without power, lots of damage, we got nothing. Hell neither Bon Jovi nor Springsteen came to perform an acoustic set for a benefit concert.

Joffen, if you are barely scrapping by there's no way you're paying alimony. You're paying child support. I've had way too many guys work for me get wage garnishee's for not paying their child support. Get a part time job to suppliment your income and manage your finances better. You won't have time to get depressed and you can get back on your feet.
.
My daughter got knocked up by a guy ten years ago. They have shared custody which means he stays high andmy grand daughter goes to his parents house where they just spend money on spoiling her. My daughter pays all the real expenses of raising a child. He hasn't been allowed to visit her unless he was at his Mom and Dad's for the last year due to multiple dui arrests, drug arrests, smacking his girlfriend around. You get the drift. His mommy decides dope head son has been straight for a couple weeks and let's daddy have her alone. He gets hopped up on prescription meds, we think. And at 10 pm drives her to a restaurant. My granddaughter says he kept dropping his head and jerking the car. They ended up at a placewhere he took a couple sips of a beer and passed out on the table. He wanted to drive my grand kid home. Management wouldn't let him. Management offered a cab but dumbass has to get mouthy and the cops were called. My daughter was called and she picked up her daughter at the restaurant and is trying to get court ordered supervised visitation.
.
It's simple, get your life together, be a good dad and you will be a happy man.

550 But seriously, Joffen -- when the walls are closing in, it's generally because you're assuming a constraint that isn't really there.

In my own situation, I've been trying to put together a retirement plan for some years where I can continue to live in the house we're in, because it's been such a good home for the BH and me. But as I was paying the $5K property tax bill in December, I realized that the reason things were impossible was because I kept assuming this house, this area, this state....and removing that one constraint opened a world of possibilities.

I don't know what your constraint is -- it may be your location, your settlement, your job, or even your state of mind....but look for an "out-of-the-box" solution before sealing yourself in the box.

Hi Sven, How are you tonight?

I live in MA and have a house that is too big, its not the time to sell it. I need some insulation in one area. MA has this program I had never heard of, Mass Saves. I had the man here from around 1 until 8:40 tonight. They'll give you 75% off insulation etc up to $2,000 per unit. We have a two family house. I also let him put in some of those CFL lightbulbs, only because some were out. We had a roof leak in 2009 and had it fixed. It's leaking again. I have to get that fixed and then they'll pay for the insulation.

This is an old house and I don't know things about stuff like this. One side of the house has the 3+ inches required for add'l insulation, the other side has 2 inches. I think it's over 100 years old.

I feel like I wasted my whole day, I didn't want to follow him around but wanted to know what he was doing.

Joffen, how many hours a weekdo you work?Since you have trouble sleeping have you tried to do anything about it. Have you done anything to improve your financial situation. Are you taking anything for depression. Venting here is fine but the reality is nobody is going to really do anything to improve your situation but you. Take a look around you at what others are going through. Your not the first and not the last to have problems. Feeling compassion for others is way better than feeling sorry for yourself.

Thank God for what you do have. I mean that. THANK GOD. You have a daughter you love. Love her more than yourself. You can be a role model. Either a role model of what to do with your life or what not to do with your life like my granddaughter's dad. Quit feeling sorry for yourself.Prioritize what you want to do with your life, for your daughter and go do it.Final word of wisdom, say good night and go to bed.

Government programs for energy efficiency are by-and-large worthless. Could be worse, though -- in one famous example in Australia, http://tinyurl.com/bbhl7kk , people died and houses burned down. Instead, follow some common-sense procedures.

For instance, pick a cold night and walk around your house and feel the walls and windows. Any feel particularly chilly? If the window in one bedroom is cool, but another one is frigid, the second is probably a single-paned job that could use replacing. If a particular wall is notably cooler than other walls (especially on an old house), that's the one that needs insulation.

Write everything down as you notice it. You can prioritize it later -- because sensible people (unlike governments) look at both costs and benefits when setting priorities. If changing your windows will cost 5x what insulating your walls will, then you'd be better off doing the walls even if the windows are 2x worse.

What are your choices? You love the daughter more than anything so quitting wont work. Get a crappier job to punish the ex wont work either since it just takes from your daughter. Better to look to history of how hard your ancestors had it and make it through the next 16 years. Then you will get the satisfaction of the Exs finances
crashing. They never plan for the end of the money train and are always overextended at its sudden stop.

598 Carol, for twenty to forty bucks you can buy a laser thermal gun. Point and click to remotely read what the temp is in spots around the house. You would be surprised what leakage can do to your heat bill. The old school way was to burn a smoky little piece of rope or an incense stick, walk around the house, check around windows doors, vents, wall sockets, whole house fans, ect and see what the smoke does.

599 Oh, and CarolT -- if someone says "blown in", blow them out. That stuff is crap the day it is installed (though plausibly effective), but collects dust, insect and rodent droppings, and crud from that day forward while it decays and packs down to uselessness. Finally, whenever anyone has to scrape that crap out to install fiberglass batts, they'll have to skirt the law to get rid of it because it will probably qualify as toxic waste.

600 Write everything down as you notice it. You can prioritize it later -- because sensible people (unlike governments) look at both costs and benefits when setting priorities. If changing your windows will cost 5x what insulating your walls will, then you'd be better off doing the walls even if the windows are 2x worse.
Posted by: cthulhu at January 31, 2013 01:16 AM (kaalw)

We put six new windows in December 2011. I desperately need insulation in the back hall. My clothes dryer is there and if it's as cold as it was last week, the clothes freeze and so do I if I don't get them out as soon as they are done. I want the hall insulated first. There is no insulation in there at all. I leads to a porch outside on the second floor. I should probably put a door without a window inhere. I have estimate for the insulation only with the 75% credit I have to fix the roof first.
We were going to put a few new windows in last year but money is tight.
Thanks for the advice. I use my common sense. I know some people go for the free things but I want that hall insulated first. In this case, I am going to take the money from the state because our Governor is a short, stocky version of TFG and wants to increase income tax!

607 Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. He was a midwestern farm kid who got into the hobby of telescope making as a teen, inspired by the column in Scientific American magazine, "Amateur Telescope Making." When he turned eighteen (or thereabouts) he hitched a ride to California and talked himself into a job at the observatory at Mt. Palomar (I think it was Mt. Palomar). One day (or night) he was using a blink comparator (I'll explain later, you filthy-minded rascals) and discovered Pluto. I don't recall whether the films he was comparing were taken to examine the orbit of Uranus, but that seems plausible.

I should also point out that insulation isn't difficult....it's the damned drywall finishing that's a pain in the tuchis. You could get 12-year-olds to rip the drywall off, stuff the insulation in, and cover it up with drywall again, and it would be just as good as contractors......but then there's taping, mudding, and texture.....

Why ain't it jus' called "slop", same ways as everyone else says it? "Backlash" sounds like it's the tool creatin' tension in the worked material and the material relaxin' afterward, whereas "slop" sounds like the play between forward an' back'ard cycles, way them machinists use it.

Seriously, I had to go through all sorts of weird references until I got it (if indeed I have).

And for a follow up question -- let's say I was running a CNC mill and I wanted to minimize slop in x.....would preloading the table on x -- like with bungies or something -- reduce the slop, being as the loading would never shift from one side of the x travel to the other?

I completely realize that these may be ignorant questions, but ignorance can sometimes lead to insight. I once had a small part in a patent, where the head of engineering had been explaining "diff phase" to me regarding measured video a few days back and was later talking about how "dispersion" distorted signals in fiberoptics....and I asked, "wasn't one like the opposite of the other?"

He waited until he collected a large number of observations that he was fed at 9 a.m. and made these observations under a wide range of circumstances, on Wednesdays, on Thursdays, on cold days, on warm days. Each day he added another observation statement to his list. Finally he was satisfied that he had collected a number of observation statements to inductively infer that ``I am always fed at 9 a.m.''. However on the morning of Christmas eve he was not fed but instead had his throat cut.''

Today, I gave a ride to a friend to the dealership where he bought a used Audi. They let us take a spin in a 2013 Camaro with a V8. Seemed solid and well finished, but I haven't been in too many sports cars and found the very diminished visibility out of the narrow windshield and small mirrors disquieting. Seemed to have plenty of power to someone like me who drives a truck that requires a calendar to time the quarter mile run, and it was a manual transmission that seemed stiff, but we only drove it for about five minutes.

656 Today, I gave a ride to a friend to the dealership
where he bought a used Audi. They let us take a spin in a 2013 Camaro
with a V8. Seemed solid and well finished, but I haven't been in too
many sports cars and found the very diminished visibility out of the
narrow windshield and small mirrors disquieting. Seemed to have plenty
of power to someone like me who drives a truck that requires a calendar
to time the quarter mile run, and it was a manual transmission that
seemed stiff, but we only drove it for about five minutes.

Posted by: model_1066 at January 31, 2013 01:59 AM

GM has improved the fit and finish of their cars, but they were so bad for so long that anything is an improvement. The 5th gen Camaro does pack a load of torque, and it will certainly handle better with the IRS, but the hard manual gearbox is still a flaw that GM hasn't remedied unless they loosen up quite a bit in the breakin period.

The visibility issue is a turnoff to me too, but then again I tend to be a little claustrophobic

Most CNC programs havea backlash compensationprogram which you set with an indicator to see how much backlash is in each axis. This amount is put into the program and is automatically adjusted for each move of an axis.

Posted by: harleycowboy at January 31, 2013 02:00 AM (+9AX9)

Went through it all @640 -- I suppose one part is more like a lament, but the other part is seeking real information.

Problem is, machinists know their tools -- while CNC guys know their models. So thinking in CNC, it's natural to suppose that anything you dial-in will end up just like the CAD drawing. That's what I was initially thinking. Now that I know there's a difference, I'm trying to understand the parameters around that difference.

Incidentally, I did some research into 3D printers recently -- did you know you can tell which direction was "up" when they were printed by rubbing your fingernail on the face? If it goes "slish, slish", that was parallel to the platform; if it goes "zit, zit", that was perpendicular.

The preferred way to minimize backlash on, say, the table on a mill is to have 2 machine nuts on the screw that drives the table.

One of the nuts is fixed, and is not allowed to move or rotate. The other one is to allowed to rotate, but may be moved towards or away from the other nut. This way, one of the screws is in contact with one side of the screw, and the other nut is in contact with the other side.

Note that when backlash is zero, the table cannot move. A small amount of backlash is therefore needed.

CNC mills generally use ball screws ... the screws contact the nuts via some recirculating balls. The backlash can be reduced even further, since the friction is very low.

The downside is that an 8TPI screw can be pushed through the nut ... holding the nut in one hand and using the other to push the screw. CNC machines have no trouble with this, as the servo motors are usually quite powerful. A manual machine with ball screws is an ugly accident waiting to happen. Climb milling is a poor choice with a mill larger than 1/4" ... switch to ball screws and there is real danger. Conventional milling is the plan on manual machines.

"Calligraphy Pen" ... may I introduce you to MasterCAM? It is possible to use the fonts organic to MasterCAM and an engraving bit ... select "Edwardian" script.

Alternatively, the pattern you desire may be drawn in SolidWorks or Pro-E, then imported into MasterCAM.

Such is the state of my education (so far) that I grokked better than 90% of this.....and six months back, I was but a lowly CPA.

On the other hand, I was managing production at a company with several CNC mills in the 80's, and moved on to be the Controller of an industrial robot company (that used ballscrews for Z travel [although they moved radially and not XYZ]) in the 90's. There's a reason that I have the peculiar combination of familiarity and ignorance that I'm demonstrating.

For backlash, someone had a diagram of a milled circle with little points where the positioning screws shifted from forward to reverse that made it click for me -- I just hope I clicked the right way, mentally. I had been looking for material flex or tool bending because of the implications of the term "backlash", but the little points indicated that it was more "slop from coming off the left shoulder of the leadscrew onto the right shoulder".

And that's why I was asking about bungie cords.

And, BTW, we may have a fascist git in the Oval Office and the economy is circling the drain....but in a lot of ways, we live in a world of wonders....where we can chat about this stuff at midnight.

Oh, no problem...I am facing the same dilemma, and at least have the luxury of living in a desirable location in a city with a large pool of potential roomies. I want one that pays rent on time, but is never there, but a guy can dream. Seriously, I am pretty deep into a major remodel that got *ahem* much more expensive than anticipated, and would like to recoup some money by having a housemate. The house next door is a rental, built at the same time, but without the usable garage and amazing basement, but it is the entire house...what it gets for a month would cover my mortgage (15 year) plus a few hundred bucks. So I figure the upstairs would be preferable for renters, and that I could get more than half my current mortgage payment. But you have a pretty big house, so you'd have to evaluate how much you like it and its location, pool of available tenants, cost to fix up the basement, how much you could rent it out as is vs. with a finished basement and so on. Chat with a real estate agent you trust, and people you know who have rentals and get a feel of what's possible. Good luck.

When you cut a circle or an arc on a CNC mill the machine moves in a straight line from one point to the next unlike a boring head which cuts a true circle. It will cut a "circle" but the points can be so fine as to be called a circle.

OK, true story.....
In about 1984, I was working at a small accounting firm in Encino. One of our audit clients was a condominium complex in Beverly Hills -- very, very, very high end. I did my work on the glass dining room table of a penthouse unit -- the owner had occupied it for a total of three days some years back and instructed the management to keep it ready for him but otherwise use it for "whatever" in his absence.

So the drill was, I'd go down to the office, grab a bunch of records, haul 'em up to the penthouse and go through 'em, get a list of questions, go down and get documents to answer the questions (and return the original records)....and write-up my findings.

So, one day, I'm getting off the elevator on the penthouse level, and there's a guy coming out of a unit in one wing and another guy walking the corridor of the other -- and the walking guy goes, "George! George! Is that you?" The other guy goes, "Fred?" And Fred says, "George, I can't believe it! Last time I saw you was almost 20 years ago with that load of carpets in the Hindu Kush!"

At which point, I'd gotten back to where my work was, opened the door, and passed inside. And sat there, in shock, at that glass table in the swanky penthouse -- marveling that two people could cross paths in a caravan in central asia one decade, and in a sixth-floor corridor in Beverly Hills two decades later.

It's a small world, indeed.

Do both. Learn as many things as you can. If you have to choose, I recommend "Electrician" first.

Learning to be a good carpenter takes time, but learning to be even a passable electrician takes a bit more. You will face less competition, and will be in greater demand.

We are likely going to see a shake-out between the Makers, the Takers, and the Fakers.

Although I hated it at the time, the money that eventually sent me and my sister to college came from building five houses, moving into them half built, and selling them once complete. I didn't appreciate getting rousted out of bed on weekends to pound nails or mix mortar, but I have used that experience about as much as (if not more than) anything I learned in school.

I don't know every trade -- but I generally know enough about each trade to ensure I get good value. For what I can't do entirely by myself, I can prep for the specialists to work efficiently.

When TSHTF, I intend to be well ahead of the "Gender Grievance Studies" majors -- and even the other CPAs -- in the "going to make it to the other side and prosper" sweepstakes.

Do both. Learn as many things as you can. If you have to choose, I recommend "Electrician" first.

Learning to be a good carpenter takes time, but learning to be even a passable electrician takes a bit more. You will face less competition, and will be in greater demand.

Watching and working with electricians I have hired recently, I started to wonder if there was such a thing as a passable electrician. Some of the shit these guys did just seemed so clumsy and amateurish, I'm surprised they hadn't killed themselves yet. One was definitely better than the other, but taking care of even simple, obvious details - like actually making sure power comes on before you leave - one would expect seemed to just slide by both of them for the most part.

Ditch the sleep pills, rarely will anything good come from those, exercise hard every night. Do a set fueled by hate for your ex, another fueled by hate for her lawyer, then yours, then the judge. On the plus side, your going to be needed the physical stamina when some 19 yo waitress needs her feet rubbed.

I'm willing to do all sorts of electrical work, so long as it's not in a "hot box" -- I know a bit too much about the service from the utility, and I'm not at all comfortable with working upstream from a master breaker. Subpanels and circuits, though -- pfui! BFD.

I had to correct a handyman's two-switch, two-fixture circuit one time after he'd floundered around on it for a couple of hours.

Knowing too much is a problem I doubt I'll ever have, unless it concerns people like Rosie O'Donnell. When I was living in my condo near downtown, I was standing at the window and witnessed a transformer in the nearby alley throw the boots in a very violent manner. Fucker went off like a cannon.

May I add please, God bless all French soldiers and African troopers, who with great honor carry out the business that the world needs to be doing in these dark days. Our disgust has never been with the soldiers, but only with their leaders and the populations that vote them into office. There's a million code legal ways to accomplish almost anything. Some elegant, others nasty and crude looking, but still "legal".

The electric code isn't about beauty, its about safety.

I like to do thing neat, tidy and thought out well enough that it looks elegant, even though and inspector and I may be the only ones to ever see it.

Inspectors like elegant and neat.

That being said, a lot of the clowns slinging Romex and plastic boxes for residential work are pretty damn crude.

If you decide to "rebuild" it, and you might want to, go to arceurotrade ... here:

http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Machines-Accessories

and look around for their rebuild .PDF. My belief (I don't have one) is that this will transform your HARBOR FREIGHT thing into a mill of good quality.

HF quality control is ... OTOH, their 8" lathe (internet only) is reputed to be a very good copy of the old Austrian Emco 8" lathe. Even for $999.99, it's a good buy.

Also, I recall a site from about 3 years ago, where the guy was using an X-2 and found that the column wasn't quite stiff enough. He added weight to the top at certain times, and claimed it worked. If your mill does indeed have such an issue, I'd see about making a "chair" from 4x4 square tubing, something that supports the mill and the column with a few 3/8-16 bolts to clamp and adjust the column.

If you are cutting plastic, and I think the X-2 is a very good choice for this, then you might never see this issue. If you decide to cut a lot of aluminum, you might see it.

It is my understanding that X2's aren't so much production mills as more like DIY mill kits. I expect to be building and rebuilding the unit a few times -- much like a beater starter car -- while I learn how to get results from it. If the results need faster/more repeatable volume, I'll have learned what I need to scale up -- whereas if I'm making a few novelty items per day, I might be ok. It's not a toy, but it's not really a professional tool -- much like the rest of stuff available at Harbor Freight.

One mod I already had in the mental file was a slab of fence-post-concrete with cast-in wooden rails, where I could stand the thing on its edge and use threaded rods against the rails to brace the center post.

Again, I know there's nice stuff out there.....but I'm looking to simulate it cheaply with low-tech fixes.

732 What gets me is the idiots who paint over all the receptacles and switches, or tape around the covers rather than just taking them off and cleaning them with Windex while the paint dries so they look new again when reinstalled.

That gives you a chance to peek inside the boxes, replace worn receptacles plugs fall out of, etc.

Nope, not that either. And I'm not looking to turn this into a guessing game, so this is the last I'll respond to. Let's just say that it's a perfectly normal name (even the fire marshall can agree!) -- except for a certain historical quirk. It's also not Tom Edison.

I have a confession to make -- that will probably make sense to you and a couple of other folks, but not to the great outdoors.

I over-wire. If something needs 14-ga, I'll use 12; if something needs 12, I'll use 9.

So, I'll stub out into the boxes with THICK mf'ers, and have to wrestle them around to work. So I'll pull the plates to paint, but not dip into the box -- 'cause there's enough solid metal in there under tension.....that I could face serious downside risks.

I do a lot of that too ... but sometimes it fails.

I recommend the rebuild manual (it's a free download) as it has many points that will make your X-2 perform at an acceptable level, and it shows the procedure for teardown and rebuild, and a caveat or two. They also have a spindle exchange program.

Arc Euro Trade has many interesting things, besides free downloadable .PDFs ... like a vernier protractor, accurate to 2 minutes (most are only accurate to 5 minutes), and for about $80.00, delivered.

I have one of these, and I like the quality.
