| BOOM! GDP Shrank 0.1% In Q4Say it with me now, "Unexpectedly ..." Economists expected the first reading on gross domestic product to show growth of 1 percent, down from the third quarter's reading of 3.1 percent.Let the blamecasting begin as the media flacks for TFG. Drew probably hit the nail on the head here, though:

What's really gruesome about that report is that exports and imports both sharply declined. That means there is a lack of demand everywhere. No bueno. We might already be in a not-yet-reported severe recession. It often takes 2-4 quarters for the reporting models to catch up to reality.
In any case, it's worth repeating that outside of the coffee klatches and sewing circles of the chattering classes the brutal reality is that laws, policies, regulations and political decisions all have grave consequences. Posted by: Tsar Nicholas II at January 30, 2013 08:58 AM (r2PLg) 40

Bingo. The forging/fudging of economic stats for the last 4 years is quote bad. The reality is likely that this dip signals the 2nd dip back into Great Depression 2.0, as government/Fed policy is no longer able to maintain "merely" at the Great Recession levels. Combined with the coming (this summer perhaps) natural downward dip of the multi-year business cycle, and other things I outlined above, and we are about to be in store for a long hot summer. 68 I know here at Casa VIA, if it isn't essential, we don't buy it.
So, if that is negatively effecting GDP, screw it. Ain't spending if I don't need to.. Yep, same here. I recently calculated that I saved 16% of my take-home pay last year. Posted by: rickl at January 30, 2013 09:31 AM (zoehZ) 128

Yesterday 10 UMWA members were arrested in St. Louis after failing to disperse when so ordered by police. They were outside a court protesting the bankruptcy hearing of Patriot Coal.
About 10,000 retirees plus their families will lose their union pension benefits (though I'm sure they will get something through the Pension Guarantee Benefit Corp, which is itself insolvent). I wonder why a coal company would go bankrupt? I wonder which way these union members and their families voted last November? Truly, it is a wonder. Let the blamecasting begin as the media flacks for TFG.
At some point, you would have to think, that they would have to say "screw this. I just can't lie anymore." They can't. Oral fixation. Posted by: John P. Squibob at January 30, 2013 09:46 AM (kqqGm) Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at January 30, 2013 09:53 AM (eHIJJ) 133

With all due respect, the fact is that we have 4 dead years of the American economy. If it was because of TFG's re-election, or due to massive job cuts as businesses prepare for full Obamacare, what difference, at this point, does it make?

If only there was a state out there that might give the country some guidance on how to manage growth and potentially a surplus. You know a state that may take a different approach to government than the federal government which has failed for years. Low taxes, cutting spending, exploiting natural resources, tort reform. Those all sound good in theory, but it would be nice if we could test them out and see if they would work at the national level.

Just remember they said defense cuts were part of the reason. So when they cut defense again, which they want to, we need to remind them they will cause a recession.
