Happy Wednesday.

Kurt Schlichter writes over at Breitbart that conservatives ignore Lena Dunham's 'Girls' at their own peril. His point is a good one: you can't retake culture if you can't discuss it. My related point: even if conservatives don't like current state of culture, setting ourselves up as nothing other than unengaged critics is unlikely to win any friends (or voters). We don't have to like Hollywood, but we should recognize that most other people do and they're not going to be very receptive to conservatives or conservative ideas if all they hear from conservatives is knee-jerk opposition. This is the second time this issue has come up in the context of 'Girls' and both Ace's and NakedDC's takes on the 'Nazi Republican' issue illustrate it well. It's okay to come at these things sideways.

Washington Post says the sequester cuts are probably going to happen and that's making Sen. Graham a sad panda. I'm down with it.

If you didn't get to hear Sen. Rubio on Rush Limbaugh yesterday, here's the transcript. El Rushbo was much less critical of the proposed bipartisan plan than he was the day before.

Rush was more than polite; he was positively gushing over Rubio afterwards. Look, I like Marco Rubio and there is a certain reality that has to be faced vis a vis those illegals already here. That's not to say that I want to grant them instant citizenship or validated membership to the Free Shit Army (which they are in already anyway).

But I did not hear a really good answer as to how Rubio intends to defend/prevent the broken promises of border security in exchange for amnesty. I also wish Rush would have brought up his amnesty without being able to vote for 25 years idea.

Oh well.

Ace has had main posts about her. Who do you think you are, Breitbart?

Posted by: HeatherRadish™ drinking heavily at January 30, 2013 06:53 AM (hO8IJ)

21 - "Kurt Schlichter writes over at Breitbart that conservatives ignore Lena Dunham's 'Girls' at their own peril."

Schlichter is a gentlemen and a scholar, but on this point he's out to lunch. The whole problem is that for decades conservatives have obsessed over "the culture" at the expense of the mechanics of politics. "The culture" doesn't vote on legislation, or nominate judges, or appoint agency heads, or issue executive orders. Politicians do. Taking back "the culture" doesn't win elections. The GOP needs a new voter base. One that's not irrational. One that actually votes.

- "Washington Post says the sequester cuts are probably going to happen and that's making Sen. Graham a sad panda. I'm down with it."

I don't know that we necessarily want to gloat over indiscriminate cuts to the military. Keep in mind whom they have as their CIC.

- "If you didn't get to hear Sen. Rubio on Rush Limbaugh yesterday, here's the transcript. El Rushbo was much less critical of the proposed bipartisan plan than he was the day before."

Obviously. It's a lot tougher to be a jackass when the object of your derision can defend himself. And Rubio is a lot smarter than Limbaugh, far better educated, and even though he's so much younger Rubio already has far more real world experience.

33 We will not win back the culture or anything else without winning back the schools and the family. As a stealth conservative in a the ultra-leftist entertainment industry, we have no shot at equal time. If we are not at the level of Clint Eastwood or David Mamet, we will be blackballed.

The schools are the key. And the only way to take those back is to get on the school boards and de-fang the AFT and NEA. And since that is an unlikely scenario, then homeschooling en masse is the best option in the short run at least.

That is until the government determines homeschooling detrimental to children's mental health and mandates public schooling. It's on page 1,435 of the Obamacare edict.

61 Rush and Levin each made the point that it doesn't really matter what laws are passed since SCOAMF will selectively choose which ones he wants to enforce.

And the circuit decision the other day about the non-recess recess appointments notwithstanding, he is behaving like a dictator. He has the press, a willing half of congress, a neutered other half, a corrupt DoJ and an unreliable Judiciary that is now mostly activist.

Again, I like Marco Rubio but I wish he was much more strident in defending the rule of law. He'd attract a hell of a lot more people to his side in anticipation of 2016. Rookie or not, you would have to be blind to not see what team SCOAMF is doing every day. I suppose he thinks he has to be all collegial and diplomatic, but that died with the Bork hearings. Well, no, you don't. I certainly don't. (What, you think I'm made of money? That shit is on premium cable or whatever it's called.) What I'm saying (and what Kurt is saying) is that unreasoned criticism doesn't help our side. You can dislike Hollywood without spending all your social capital disliking Hollywood.

Lemme put it this way: remember how ya'll thought Speaker Boehner was acting stupidly for picking a fight with the most popular folks on the conservative side and ya'll thought he should be picking fights with the least popular folks on the GOP side? This is the same thing, only subsitute "conservatives" for "Speaker Boehner" and "Hollywood" for "the most popular folks on the conservative side."

Why must we always lead with knee-jerk criticisms of something that most Americans like a lot? It puts us crossways with most Americans, who, if you hadn't noticed, we kinda need to convince that conservatives aren't freaks.

Look around Gabe. Convincing others that we aren't freaks by engaging in the institution that's decrying us is a long hard slog. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but the very institutions that we should involve ourselves in want us to FOADIAF. Quite literally. Being able to talk around the water cooler about "Girls" or "Abbey Road" or "The Biggest Loser" will not for one second stop them from eviscerating us when the subject of gun control or taxes comes up.

However.

Calling Girls a "trend" is a fucking stretch. I just looked up the Season Two numbers and it's averaging 860,000 viewers. That's fucking dismal.

Episode 1 - 870,000 viewers.
Episode 2 - 570,000 viewers.
Episode 3 - 760,000 viewers.

Rachel Maddow numbers. Cooper Anderson numbers.

I could air a fucking ALF reunion 4-parter that would average more viewers. The "critical acclaim" is what is keeping this shitburger on life support. If this whore had to compete on a non-cable network, the advertisers would dump her like... well, every man would dump her. If she could get a man.

126 Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Sorry to be late. Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe, and here’s a prayer for Vic and Mrs Vic as she goes to the doctor today. Let’s have a happy story – let’s talk about another of my favorite movies, Stanley Kramer’s 1963 epic It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

The shoot – over 160 days - took place in various California locations, from Cathedral City (where Smiler Grogan kicked the bucket), to Palm Desert, Yucca Valley, San Fernando, Long Beach, San Pedro. . .and the list goes on.

One location, near Palm Springs, was on the property of composer Jimmy Van Huesen, who, with lyricist Sammy Cahn, wrote many of Frank Sinatra’s best songs - the Ray and Irwin gas station (“Service with a Big, Broad Smile!”). The station was a specially constructed set, which Van Heusen first saw on his weekly drive from LA to his Palm Springs house. Now, you or I might stop and wonder about it if a gas station suddenly appeared on our property, but Van Heusen drove right on; he figured his business manager had leased the property to a real service station.

That weekend, Kramer shot the scenes involving the station; first, when Milton Berle, Ethel Merman and Dorothy Provine try to rent the station’s tow truck, and then, the fight between Jonathan Winters, Marvin Kaplan and Arnold Stang which turns the station into a pile of rubble. The shooting complete, Kramer and crew packed up, just before Van Heusen drove by again, on his trip back to LA. When the composer saw the wreck, he whipped his car around and drove back to Palm Springs, frantically calling his manager; he figured some terrible accident had happened to the station over the weekend and was deathly afraid he might be sued!

If you watch the fight, you’ll see that Stang’s left wrist is held limply inside a thick glove; it turns out the actor had broken it earlier and the glove was being used to hide his cast. Surprisingly, for a film containing such mayhem, only Stang and Phil Silvers (who pulled a groin muscle)* were injured during the shoot.

There was one close call with death, however. Stunt flyer Frank Tallman was directed to fly Tyler Fitzgerald’s (Jim Backus) twin-engine Beechcraft D-18 through a Coca-Cola advertising sign. A fake sign was set up for practice, made of Styrofoam and balsa wood, and Tallman flew through it several times a day for three weeks, in order to get the speed and angle correct. When the time came for filming, however, the paper sign reading “The Pause That Refreshes” had been replaced – no one ever admitted who did it – by linen. When Tallman flew through the sign at over 160 mph, the resistance killed the right engine, shattered the cockpit windshield and tore back the leading edges of both wings. Tallman said it was the closest he’d ever come to dying, and he refused to ever perform a similar stunt again.

One last note: many, many more comedians and actors were considered for inclusion in the Mad World cast than ever made it to the final cut, including Stan Laurel, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Red Skelton and Groucho Marx (who was originally offered the role of Mister Marcus, Milton Berle’s father-in-law, but he asked for too much money and the role was recast for Ethel Merman). You remember one of the funniest cameos in the movie, when Dingy Bell (Mickey Rooney) and Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett) are trying to land at Rancho Conejo Airport – the camera catches a milling crowd and an ambulance preparing for casualties, then slowly pans left to reveal the airport’s firefighters: Larry, Moe and Curly-Joe. Well, there was actually a fourth Stooge set to be in the movie: Joe Besser was to play either Ray or Irwin in the gas station, but his TV producers wouldn’t give him time off to make an appearance.

OK, I lied, one more: there never was such a place as the Santa Rosita Beach State Park, where the Big “W” was. The land was private property on Palos Verdes Drive in Palos Verdes, converted over by United Artists at a cost of $80,000 and left as seen in the movie after shooting wrapped. You can still hike to the beach and look into the large yard, but the palm trees no longer exist, victims to years of neglect. Only one stump of one tree remains. The current owners promise to restore the Big “W” to its full glory, but they’ve also been promising that since the 1980s, so don’t get your hopes up.

And that’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed that. And don’t forget about my book, The Director’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery, available on Kindle and from the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites, or through your local bookstore.

*the injury happened while the cast was chasing Captain Culpeper (Spencer Tracy); watch as the men pursue him up the stairwell of an abandoned building near the end of the film and you’ll notice it’s Silvers’ stunt double, keeping his face turned away from the camera, who’s doing the scene.

You should recognize that you're a sucker.

Despite endless, endlessly repeated, across-the-spectrum all-media hype, from the day of the show's announcement to this morning on this very blog, one third of one percent of Americans watch Girls. All of them chumps.

The illusion of being where the action is--of being the site of Culture, of unity, of moral peril, etc.--is the spectacular illusion.

I mean "spectacular" in the Society of the Spectacle sense. You guys should know that stuff. The "dead object in spectacular contemplation" (e.g., Lena Dunham) is a defensive bulwark of the ruling class (which isn't you), yo. If you look, you lose.

The "arts" media gets wood over this, but more people watch the lowest rated network show than watch "Girls."

"Girls is about four young, aimless college grads living in New York. Think of Sex and the City, except Sarah Jessica Parker has doubled her weight, dresses like a potato sack and fancies herself the voice of some undefined generation. I'm not sure that will ever take hold. Bob Dylan has taken some pretty conservative stands going back to the 60s and either people were too fucking dumb to figure it out or they just chose to ignore it. Fuck HBO. Until we start calling every leftist out as a racist murderer instead of "engaging" them, we won't be in the correct mindset for this fight.

Hey, remember how everyone used to make jokes about Ryan Seacrest being really short? He was the butt of the joke for quite a while. Then, he started making the short jokes first and beat everyone to the punch! The short jokes dried up; it wasn't any fun anymore.

Sure he still has a side job posing for trophies, but the jokes stopped.

The point is, until we beat the left to the punch and decry everything they do in the harshest, most irrational terms possible EVERY SINGLE TIME, they will continue to pwn the culture and pwn us as well.

Stop trying to be the "cool dad" and go fucking serial killer on their vapid, soul-crushing trash.

174 Some more contrast:

Duck Dynasty, an obviously scripted "reality" show about a family of Louisiana shitkickers, got 2.36 million viewers last week on a Wednesday night. That's four times the viewership of Girls.

And yet no one talks about the overwhelming continued popularity of a kind-hearted family that pretends to be stupid to pull off some self-deprecating, but not cruel humor. A show that always ends with the family around the dinner table while the patriarch thanks God for their blessings.

I guess it's just not "important", like the self-defeating travails of a pack of vapid whores who pretend to be smart. Then again, I thought the purpose of television was entertainment.

176 Re: Zimbabwe, aaand yet another resource rich, hopelessly mismanaged central economy chokes on its own vomit.

Much like South Africa, Zimbabwe was rocking along mining diamonds and plutonium (who doesn't need those?) until around 2000 or so, when the world decided it was OK to let a nativist backed governments overthrow the whites who had set up a functioning economy, and redistribute their shit to violent, uneducated freeloaders who were only looking for a hand up, not a hand out if I recall correctly, though maybe that last part was someplace else.

Anyway, a scant decade later they are printing trillion dollar bills (I have one, courtesy of a sales call from our Jersey Isle foreign associates who handle my African filings for oil companies; it's crazy looking with all those zeros) and the their entire society has been utterly destroyed (hence the associates setting up shop in islands off the coast of England rather than locally).

In South Africa, they are down to around seven-million white taxpayers who live nice enough lives in armed villages hoping the locals don't rise up and kill their guards, which they could easily do if they got drunk and angry (which happens all the time) and decided to face the machine guns with machetes human wave style.

Ah, progress. Coming to a theater neighborhood near you.

184 The “framework” says that “illegals” presently in the US could get a visa, which wouldn’t allow them access to welfare services, until some lamebrain federal judge (most likely in the Ninth Circuit) says otherwise.

I pointed out on Monday that we need to keep in mind that the GOP can lose this in too ways .. it can pass a bad bill or walk away from a good bill
After listening around, I’m beginning to get the feeling that this “framework” may .. I stress may .. become a fairly decent bill.
I’m also beginning to sense that the Democrats are now trying to convince the GOP that it is a bad bill (since when has David Frum been right about anything). This allows them to show that they care more about Hispanics (but not those Mexicans that Fast and Furious helped get killed) and keep this thorny issue alive that pays dividends for Democrats at the polls. But I also agree with Sen. Sessions ...
"We would be in a much better position to achieve immigration reform if the Obama Administration had spent that last four years enforcing federal law rather than dismantling it. Brave immigration agents have been left with no recourse but to sue their own Department head, simply so that they—like any other law officers—will be allowed to do their jobs. Just last Friday a federal judge made an important preliminary ruling in their favor. The ICE union also held their own agency head, John Morton, in no confidence with a unanimous vote. The first task for every media agency in the country ought to be to study this lawsuit, to listen to the long-documented complaints of ICE agents, and to review the record of stymied attempts at congressional oversight of DHS."

Our Dear Leader would be just as happy to kick this can down the road because the status quo works for him right now, so he has no problem using immigration as a weapon for his personal political fetishes.

So far this is merely a “framework” not a bill. I suggest that we find out what it really is before forming a judgement, and yes, stay skeptical.

Anyway.. We were suggesting shows to each other and my daughter mentioned Girls.. but added "You may not like that one.." ya think? I have HBO and Showtime and I had never even heard of it until it won some awards recently!

I have never considered cable shows to be indicative of anything.. HBO did that Sarah Palin movie and it also got all kinds of awards.. I don't know one person who watched it.

Broadcast TV shows - that actually try to sell you stuff through commercials - are probably a lot better barometer for pop culture.. but we're still doomed.

If they are going to play politics with it, then fine, make it hardball. Menendez and his sex offender illegal alien office worker. Menendez and his underage Dominican whores that his biggest donor takes him to play with on his private jet.

Just kidding. He said average, and we all know who he was talking about.

That Schlichter post may require a rebuttal. FFS, it almost reads like he's a PR flack for the show.

Meanwhile, the season 4 premiere of Justified had 5.3 million viewers, the show is critically acclaimed, and one of its stars is an AoSHQ Moron.

Yeah, let's talk about "Girls".

219 We're quickly becoming the Ed Morrissey Party, a bunch of whiny eunuchs who babble about "fairness" and suck up to the Choom Boy Brigade so they don't miss the cocktail parties and all those affectionate little pats on their shiny heads from Our Betters among the liberals.

Sorry. I think "becoming" has nothing to do with it. It has always been this way.

What changed is that with the Clintons and now Obama and his gang of thugs, the left went far enough off script that the RINOs can no longer hide the fact that they really play for the other side.

As the left's behavior gets more and more outrageous, the tepid RINO opposition is finally starting to look as ridiculous as it really is.

There is no engagement or debate possible with the left. The differences between what they represent and what the USA is supposed to be are irreconcilably at odds.

Anyone claiming to be not of the left telling you that debate or engagement with the left is possible is either deluded or an infiltrator.

It is what it is. The Democrats held all the cards for half of the damn Amnesties this nation has had and we were told in 1986 that this PRECISELY would not happen then the donks keep importing them.

We do not have "rescue boats" for Cubans, and I do not get to import Right wing EUropean reinforcements.

Only Team Donkey gets to weaponize the immigration patterns of the US.

221 Late good morning, morons. I am still under the weather.

1. Agree we should engage on some of the culture. I suggest not this show, which requires spending actual money to watch. Also, it's only talked about in the press because it's "edgy." Much better to start in by forcing oneself to watch and seriously critique Beyonce's Super Bowl half time. You could probably go to the trouble to watch "Girls" and then discover brining it up at the water cooler would only get you labeled more of a weirdo.

2. Sven, sirens were probably tornado warning downin Batholomew County and Edinburgh. The tornado warning went off when I had the radio on last night.

232 I get where Rubio is coming from. He says the first thing we need to do is fix the LEGAL immigration system. Its true, I have been saying it for a long time (that means its better than true, its right!) but the reason why it remains broken is that there is no real constituency there.

His proposal is actually pretty good.

We need to stop eating Rubio alive, you are acting like the Preezy is right when he says "If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you'll see more of them doing it."

Great, like we want TFG to be right about something.

Just like entitlements, either we fix immigration - legal and illegal - or it will fix itself in a way we have no control over. So let's not eat our own for GOOD IDEAS.

Remind Rubio who he is working with. Tell the truth about the Dems.

308 One of the true geniuses of the past twenty years has to be the person who first came up with reality tv shows. Zippo production costs compared to, say, a sitcom. I think in most cases the director is taking care of script as they go along. Minimal set expenses. Use of archived footage saves tons. That Alaska show, Gold Rush, had a little blurb that 120 people participated in last season's production. Now that is among three sites, remotes, studio dubbing, the whole works. Kaching.

I have not savaged Rubio as anything other than either a naive idiot or a person who is lying to us.

That would be because those are the "choices."

Maybe if Rubio kept himself contained on wagging his tail and saying..."COME ON GUYS I KNOW THEY WON'T FUCK YOU THIS TIME! I CAN FEEL IT!"

he wouldn't be getting the heat he is?

Do you understand how pissed off a lot of us are that the GOP leadership felt that:

1) negotiating on this behind closed doors for 4 years was "a great idea"

2) that John fucking McCain who can't get his mouth of Zombie Ted kennedy's co*k is front and center

3) they launch into this bullshit rather than using the early stage of the game to lay the groundwork for an endless barrage of "where's you fucking budget harry?"

The GOP needed this chat like it needed a hole in the head....

Let Ogabe bring it up and remind everyone he is a fucking retard who is blocking this.

If the GOP takes more than one step forward without HARD action on the border it is finished.

Then the only answer is to not talk about it. It's nothing to actually like, if you're conservative, and faking that you're interested is going to be worse than consistently criticizing.

The best alternative is to discourage TV watching in favor of other activities, and if you can't shut it off, get into shows like Mythbusters, Iron Chef, World Poker Championships, Deadliest Catch, etc, that are about people doing things other than boinking, shooting, and covering it up.

350 Conservatives are never taking the culture back, so there is no point in watching or discussing shows like "Girls."

Posted by: Capt. Obvious at January 30, 2013 04:53 PM (oyQVv)

351 Kurt, if you really want us to watch "Girls", you might start by not writing a description of it that makes us even less interested in watching it after we read it than before we read it. If we really want to watch frumpy women insult Republicans, we don't need "Girls". We don't need HBO. We don't even need premium cable. We already have "The View". (All apologies to Elisabeth Hasselbeck, because she's pretty and not leftist, but it's true.) And if I want to watch vapid modern women, "The Bachelor(ette) is on ABC and the Kardashians are on E! and they're more attractive.

It's not, or at least not simply, a matter of not wanting to go outside the conservative bubble. It's about not wanting to go outside it for crap. There's stuff on HBO and AMC and other networks that's not strictly speaking our message, that's in some cases really not our message, that's nonetheless good art, entertaining, and that in least some cases provides food for thought and discussion of our message. I'm supposed to care about "Girls" instead of that stuff? Life's too short.

And "Lena doesn't think Republicans are like Nazis, Hannah does" might fly a little bit better if Lena had never done "Your First Time". There's a certain point where Lena is Hannah is Lena. Trying to tell the difference is like trying to tell the difference between Aaron and Roy in "Primal Fear". You'll get the same answer either way, and for the same reason. It's like saying that Aaron Sorkin or Rod Lurie don't really think liberals are good people and conservatives are evil bastards. So it's just a coincidence that it works out that way in their movies/shows? Really?
