Mali Citizens Attack French and National Troops Jihadists

Well this is a nice story.

Malian troops bundled the men into an army truck, their hands bound behind their backs. For the better part of a year, the al-Qaida-linked extremists had banned music, insisted women cover themselves and began carrying out public executions and amputations in the towns of northern Mali that they controlled…

Most fled as French and Malian troops advanced, but some stayed behind. Local militias began hunting them down, to turn them over to the troops.

In further Give The People What They Want (Until They Rebel and Begin Beheading Jihadists) news, some cock-eyed optimist thinks that Egypt may be heading for a counter-revolution.

Paul Rivlin, an economist and senior research fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University, says Egypt is a wreck and that insight can be drawn from the two consecutive revolutions in Russia.

The February Revolution of 1917 toppled the Russian monarchy and established a provisional government which was overthrown in October 1917 by the Bolshevik revolution led by Vladimir Lenin.

And Egypt is a horrible wreck, so.

This is actually a neat insight (one of those insights that's extremely obvious... once you point it out). While a great many revolutions manage to grab up all power and thus establish stable (if dreadful) tyrannies, there are a lot of revolutions which are followed, lightning-quick, but counter-revolutions.

This chiefly seems to happen to intensely anti-human, fervently ideological movements which don't really care about what people want; they just want to make people behave the way they think people ought to behave.

And that leads to another bit of optimism: How enthusiastic will Obama's Zombie Mobs be for more of the same in 2 or 4 years?

One thing I've come to realize about a basic point of Ron Paul's foreign policy -- he was right about this, and I was wrong -- is that populations really do need to make their own mistakes. Our foreign policy is often geared to attempting to ensure that foreign populations don't do anything foolish or terrible... and, as with teenagers resentful of the authority of adults, that seems to make them just want to do foolish and terrible things even more.

Sometimes it might just be better (assuming no direct threat to ourselves) to let them massacre each other, and spasm from one authoritarian tyranny to the next, until they're so badly beaten up they actually seek outside counsel.

That doesn't mean I buy into the doctrinaire Strong Form version of his stuck-in-the-60s flower-child peacenik spiel.

But I thought this during Iraq, and I'm sure many of you thought this as well: We seem to be losing a lot of good American lives in order to make sure that one barbaric group in Iraq doesn't massacre another barbaric group in Iraq.

If they're keen on a bloodletting, maybe it's counterproductive to keep trying to prevent it. Maybe they need to learn, through the vicious school of experience, that bloodletting is something to be avoided.

You can explain something to someone but you can't understand it for him.

7 Only the people of a "nation" can determine what their form of government will be. External forces can play at establishing a governmental structure, but it cannot be sustained without the support of the people. And yes, many nations will revert to abominable tyrannical forms of government because there were not enough people willing to or capable of defending basic freedoms. It is NOT our problem.

We have wasted too much of our national treasure in young lives and dollars defending transient corrupt regimes that will wither and die just to satisfy a politician's lust for world credibility.

Egypt's big problem is that their economy is based on tourism, and the tourists are staying away because they're afraid. Egypt's other big problem is that they import about half the calories they need to stave off widespread starvation, and they have to pay for that food with hard currency, which the tourists aren't bringing in anymore.
If the Muslim Brotherhood clamps down, the way it's feared they might, then the tourist industry won't recover and the country will starve. It already is starving; food prices are rising rapidly. That's what will make the people rise up, when and if.

11 We made so many obvious tactical errors in Iraq, after the fucking State Department took over from the military, that it is pretty hard to draw any democratization principles from it. Simply paying the Iraqi army to go back to their barracks so that they would have a paycheck would have made a world of difference in preventing the Sunni insurgency.

30 The more usual pattern is for a liberal (in the sense of "liberating") revolution to be promptly hijacked by the most organized and ruthless allies.
The Bolsheviks were not a counter-revolution because they supported the ousting of the Tsar. They were radical hijackers.
You see the same thing in the French Revolution, where the Jacobins overcame the classic liberals who threw out Louis XVI.
And then there's Egypt, where the Muslim Bro'hood hijacked the broader revolution.

Peace comes when party 'I' has a boot on party 'A's throat and 'A' calls uncle. (See Germany Italy Japan circa 1945)

Mumbles Menino said in his address that Wayne LaPierre said the way to stop gun violence is "more guns." [A huge lie, btw.]

Menino paused and then said, "This is crazy!'

While the political hacks were clapping like seals, Menino smiled and laughed.

The whole scene was surreal.

Nah, just take a few off the school playground. After a couple weeks of their whining about how they miss their families and just want to go home, you'll realize it's not worth it. Just untie them at that point, but leave the blindfolds on... in case they decide they want to come visit again, you'd be better off if they don't know where you live.

The Brotherhood's sudden rise to power in Egypt and Tunisia — and soon,
in a possible domino effect, Yemen and even Syria and Jordan — didn't
happen organically. It was orchestrated by a U.S. president sympathetic

113 Counter-intuitive idea:

International refugee aid make crazy jihadi revolutions more likely.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Mali have fled. And they know the UN/NATO/US will house and feed them wherever they go.

In the past, fleeing at the first sign of violent attackers meant starvation and death. You couldn't just abandon your home and farm and escape into the desert or jungle or mountains.

Now you can.

So why fight the attackers?
Why not go live for 6 months in a refugee camp with US/UN/NATO supplied food and water and TV and radio. Probably get some nice medical care and vaccinations, too.
Wait for the US/UN/NATO to fight the jihadis and clear them from your village.

Why risk your life when you don't have to?

The problem wasn't the initial plan. The problem was how we handled things as time went on.

When we first invaded the rest of the ME was terrified and we had peace.

Then Iran figured out the Democrats really did want to lose the war and caused the "civil war" by arming and working with both the Shiites and Sunnis.

If you shoot me an email to mike AT aflowershopinbaghdad DOT com, I might be able to change your mind about the whole Iraqi war thing. There was a ton your son may not realize he did... I was embedded with the Iraqi Air Force for a year. A lot of consequences that your son put in motion that he didn't see, but were incredibly powerful.
Well; if you want, I'll send you a couple of copies of the book.
There wasn't any reason to tell any good stories there at the time, a Republican was in office.
But there were.
The heartbeat is still there.

Oh I put ALOT of the blame on the treacherous liberals for undercutting President Bush. If we had had united support I believe things would have turned out very different.

This.

That "we were united on 9/11 but Bush ruined it" crap is just that. The Reds started undermining President Bush on 9/12. It just took them a while to get traction.

How many times have I heard Paul insulted and called a lunatic by conservatives throughout the internet?

Gee. It seems we can't solve every problem in the world militarily, and we should mostly mind our own business except when our national interests are threatened. What a radical concept.

194 My problem with the criticisms of the Iraq War is that they're largely CYA and ignore history prior to 9/11.

In 2000 France and Germany were pushing to end the UN Sanctions. After the war we learned that while Saddam didn't have the WMDs that we thought, he was still intent on rebuilding his capability once the sanction were ended. So essentially we were left with a) remove the sanctions and hope his WMD programs never came to fruition; b) keep the sanctions imposed for however long it took for Saddam and his psychopath sons to die and hope that a rational successor took over; or c) remove Saddam from power.

C, in my mind, was the most rational choice. Especially considering that our estimations of his previous WMD efforts, as well of other nations, were not so hot.

Truer words seldom spoken....

You ever notice that Brand D Presidents have leave to go on magical Military expeditions without the need for approval?

You ever notice that at best they naively think people act like our Founders and at worst they just empower the Muslim brotherhood or "whomever?"

Yeah this Mali thing....group a who was being killed by group B will now kill group b alongside us.....and if we leave them guns forever....

unless of course Giggles decides he likes group B....then we will try to put our bodies between group a and b and buy them off with freeshit.

Remember when this was called "you can never win in iraq or 'ghani CHIMPY?"

Yeah neither does the media.

250 Not to hijack a thread, but I need some moron advice. I had to put down my beloved 17 year old cat today. As hard as it was for me (I was sobbing so hard they sent me out the back door), it's going to be worse for my daughter, who is away at college.

In addition to being my daughter's constant companion throughout her childhood, this cat was the only thing that kept my daughter sane when her mom died of cancer when she was 15.

My dilemma: she's currently going through a demanding, stressful senior thesis at college. I'd feel like a traitor if I didn't tell her immediately, but I know if I do it will devastate her and screw up her thesis.

What would you do?

254 211 ette,

pretty much and if that were the limits of the hypocrisy I could endure it, but we are not allowed to use "target these districts" or we killed gabby Giffords but they can generate Snuff Films about Bush and not get called on it by the media....

see?

If you are close enough to drive there and tell her in person, that would be nice.

264 Ombudsman - so sorry about your beloved pet. One of the hardest things to do is having to let our little pets go who have meant so much to our lives.

Question - Would your daughter be mad at you if you waited until her school work load had lessened? Even if you explained to her why?

I think that if I was in your position I would wait and explain as best I could later. You did it out of love and concern for her.

270 250 Ombudsman,

You have a few options.

1) not tell her until her trials are over.

2) tell her at once

3) lie to her and say the cat passed naturally and was happy in the end.

4) get her a new cat that can stunt double...(just kidding sorry)

It's a hard thing to cope with, she had to have understood intellectually that the cat was old, but we do develop ties to pets that served us in hardship that run as deep as any.

I'd probably go with option 3 myself.

I hope things work out, sorry for your losses.

This.

She doesn't need to know right now - there's nothing she can do about it, and it may upset her and affect her performance at a critical juncture. Let her work with a clear mind, and tell her at a better time.

You have a few options.

Go with option 1. She won't know exactly when Fluffy bought it, and the exact day doesn't really matter. Let her do what she has to do, then tell her.

277 Put fluffy in the freezer, take it out the day before she comes home and put it under her bed - shoudl thaw in 24 hours.

That way she can share in the grief thinking it passed recently without thinking you betrayed her by not telling.

280 Ace should realize -- you'd THINK -- that each country's experience is it's own, and you just can't go around forecasting the future off the past, just because you're ignorant about that country's circumstances and too lazy and suffused in hubris to admit I Just Don't Know.

But ... no.

This IS one reality-based view of why Egypt's nascent democracy 'turned' to the Muslim Brotherhood: because the MB was simply the single largest, best organized group at the time the first vote took place. And THAT makes sense simply because one of the most likely types of groups to continue to exist thru dictatorship is a church-based organization, especially one that provides at least a modicum of food and medical support during the hegemony of the dictatorship. Catering to those two things -- faith and social support -- is bound to attract good will, such that it becomes inevitable that, should the organization offer itself up in election, it will also attract votes.

And if you just look at the voting, Ace, you will find that MB did not attract anything like majority support, just plurality support, with those who did NOT vote for it to control government being, very likely, voting AGAINST it.

But go ahead and make up your own bullshit scenario without regard to facts on the ground or electoral realities for a new democracy, Ace. It's exactly your sort of self-delusion that makes it overwhelmingly likely that the Republican party will continue to fail in taking the White House or the Senate.

It's almost as if "Conservative" values, such as fostering self-responsibility, thrift, and acknowledging the unforseen consequences of government action, apply to the U.S. government's actionsoutside its borderseven more than those inside them.

What a genius and counterintuitive insight. Next you'll tell me this actually used to be the "Conservative" approach to foreign policy.
