Breitbart.com's "The Conversation" Launches Tomorrow

I'll be participating in the launch. A bunch of other good people are involved:

Iowahawk, David Webb, Javier Manjarres of Shark Tank, DocZero, Nice Deb, Jerome Hudson, Lisa De Pasquale, William A. Jacobson of Legal Insurrection, and Adam Baldwin, along with John Nolte, Ben Shapiro, Larry O'Connor, Sonnie Johnson, Liberty Chick, Jon David Kahn, as well as other writers and contributors from Breitbart News.

The idea (which I was interested in for years, and still am) is trying something a bit more conversational, like the old Corner. Less a blog and more an interaction.

I had an observation about this. The observation begins with the question: Why do people like debates? After all, as far as an information-per-second delivery mechanism, print essays provide much more data. Also, essays present the argument it its best, most-polished form -- which may or may not happen in a debate, depending on the debater's skill at rhetoric.

So why watch them? Well, I think because real-time interactions present something absent in controlled-environment carefully-vetted essays: drama. Someone could score a point, someone could be humiliated. A real-time interaction adds a human interest to the strictly logical/intellectual interest of an essay.

I know we, as conservatives, like to knock drama, as something that The Other Team goes for, but human beings are natural, intuitive storytellers (and story-consumers) and respond to drama no matter what our intellectual aversions to it might be.

If we weren't story-centered creatures, we wouldn't bother with NASCAR races or track and field competitions -- we'd just have everyone singly run and record their best possible time, at at time most convenient to them, and then dryly compare race results when they all came in.

Boring, huh? And you can say that's because "the ability to directly compete/muscle out other racers is part of the skill we call racing," and that's true, but it's something else, too: It's because one human being directly contending with another, with a clear and obvious stake at risk (money, fame... survival) is inherently compelling.

Now that I've nattered on about this, no, I don't think people yapping at each other in a forum is as exciting as a race; and it won't even be a debate, most of the time. (But it will still be a competition; life always is.)

I'm just noting that it's the presence of that human factor that tends to make a debate a public spectacle, with cheering and harumphs, whereas reading an essay is something you do alone, with much less cheering (though there may be the occasional soft harumph). And the real-time thing adds something -- something that seems to be spur-of-the-moment is always more impressive than something planned and written.

David Letterman used to pre-script jokes but deliver them as if he was just thinking of them -- he got more laughs that way. People appreciated he'd "just thought of that" -- even though he hadn't.

What the bloody hell am I talking about? Man I just do go on and on and on. Someone should say something to me about that.

So, anyway, I'm glad that Breitbart's trying it.

In case you're worried I'm going to be on Breitbart all day: Nope, I'll be here most of the time. It's a side-thing. I like talking to you guys.

To the extent it reduces my online presence in other ways -- it will reduce my use of Twitter. Rather than posting something on Twitter during the ONT hours, I'd just post it at The Conversation. Twitter's fun and all but it really does me no personal good to spread my pearls of wisdom and hate (but mostly hate) on someone else's platform. I don't really interact much on twitter anyway (I'm wary of inventing additional time-sucks for myself), so I won't be disappointing too many people who follow me there.

There's one additional advantage about being on Breitbart's official comments site: That I will be reading Breitbart's comments section, but not the actual posts.

Debates can be a wonderful thing if they are REAL debates. But I don't think I have ever in my life seen real political debate hosted on the national stage.

33 I guess I'm confused as to what this is? It seems like a filtered comments feed basically where they took all the well-known-ish people and gave them a private forum to banter back and forth in while we watch.

Maybe they're just doing a bad job of telling me what I'm about to see, maybe I'm misreading it. But to a certain extent if that's all it is, then it just simplifies my normal routine of tracking down all your individual blogs (where you sort of monologue at each other sometimes anyway.)

So I great it with a tepid: Meh? Maybe it'll be fun. But personally I get more kicks out of fighting with the horde than I do watching the bloggers go at it. (Well except during thunderdome days, those are fun.)

yeah I don't want to knock the Corner but it definitely has lost
that element of a "conversation." It's now just a group blog-- which is
fine and all (this blog is a group blog) but it's not the same thing.

That's why I started thinking about this like two years ago and even

109 I think Twitter supplies the illusion that you're really involved in a group discussion but in actual fact, you're usually not -- and I say this as someone who has tweeted lots of people like david gregory and chuck todd. They simply do not respond.

Matthew Modine responded, and I made fun of him for an hour, and I'd WANTED to post that exchange, but he realized he'd been made to look a fool and deleted all of his tweets.

But in general this idea that twitter is "democratic and not exclusionary" is a bit oversold. You can @ someone, but that doesn't mean your would-be correspondent reads it, or even responds.

116 OT, but my little hometown made Drudge. It's the story about a school planning to shoot blanks during a school shooting drill. Of course a bunch of parents are upset at the prospect. I wonder what these delicate flowers would have thought about live shotgun fire in the school? That's how they simulated the canons from 1812 Overture when I was in band 25 years ago. They put a 55 gallon drum behind the stage, with a thick board in the bottom. One of the football coaches brought his 12 gauge, and shot up the board at the appropriate part of the song. I sat about 10 feet away, and nearly lost my place with each BANG! I remember thinking it was cool, but my ears were ringing.

Ace, re the debate thing:

Debates work in the modern world because it's a short-attention span world now, and because most voters simply want to "like" a candidate. Very few of today's voters are going to spend the time to read position papers, etc. That type of research is for people who already know more than most voters, and already know who they are voting for anyway.

The debate form used today isn't a debate anyway, it's a collection of sound bites and prepared smart-ass remarks, moderated by over-officious jerks who want to be the focus for their own career advancement and cocktail party invite purposes.

I'm sure you've read the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which went on for hours. Now those were debates!

Sure it's busy and it requires moderation, but I've seen forums with 50,000 members actively posting and maintaining a decent discussion rate.

Not everything becomes 4Chan.

Still, I understand the desire to limit the people as a matter of making *publishable content* which is what the Brietbart media group obviously wants And to that end I think it'll work, my only point is it's a group of people with a platform, (not just a *blog* which anyone except AllenG can make) but a group with a large readership and giving them a second platform. I'm not offended, I just wonder if it's redundant.

I kept checking the thread for over a day and it was never touched.

I think part of the problem is that their own base, and much of the squishy middle, limits their political info consumption to only HuffPo. At least right minded individuals are used to seeking out alternative sources to get around the left-slant of mainstream news.

Better coordination isn't going to do much good when the HuffPo et al will simply ignore our take on a given story.

This is why the left always drives the narrative. The right is still trying to figure out a response when the narrative is already set.

I don't believe that would work. One reason it wouldn't work is that right-leaning people tend to more highly prize individualism than "collective action" and decisionmaking -- I always view all this collective business as creepy and anti-human.

There's a lot of infighting on the right. Part of it is ego and part of it is just jockeying for position, but part of it is also the fundamental right-leaning mindset that we bow to no king.

I always get grief for "not supporting Rush Limbaugh enough" (even though, on the whole, I generally support him). I don't think people realize how alien that idea is -- automatically genuflecting to one's Superiors in the Pecking Order --to others on the right.

Anyone with any kind of ego (and I do have one) AND who prides himself on individualism is going to recoil from the suggestion that he outsource his beliefs and his thinking to Top Men.

So, structurally, I think the left has an advantage on us in that department; but frankly, they're welcome to it.

I'd rather be human and my own master than win elections. I think, ultimately, we all wood, which is why the moment I say something like "Put aside your beliefs and get on board with this for political considerations," you pretty much all tell me "go fuck yourself to hell."

I think that's just the conservative temperatment.

The US public doesn't have "conversations" anymore about key policy issues. Instead, we get beat over the head with trite emotionalist pap and shrieks about the necessity of "doing something", which only results in the masturbatory gratification over the mere fact that "something" was "done".

Now, far be it from me to suggest that the horde is in any way opposed to anything due to the mere fact that it's masturbatory. But in this case, I think we'd all agree it's dragging the country down to a point where the only people who have the power and influence to move policy in the direction they want, are those who control the loudest microphones.

203 >>>Ooooo! Ace is speaking fwench!

How's that coming, Ace?

not good. I can read it okay but I can't understand it too well. I noticed the old Indiana Jones DVDs had a french audio track AND french captions so I put those on; but alas the audio track is completely different than the captions, and not in the usual way (shortening things), but working from a completely different script.

Lao Zhe says "Bonjour, monsieur Jones" in audio and then the caption says "Bonjour doctor jones." Aurevoir instead of "bon nuit." And those are just the simple things -- there is barely a word spoken that is accurately registered in the captions.

It's very annoying if you're trying to match the word to the sound, which was the whole bloody point.

So it's not going well. I can read it (if I have a dictionary handy).

The main thing, understanding the spoken language, is nearly as far off as it was when I started.

217 The first time Darryl Baker saw a polar bear, he was on his snowmachine, checking his fox traps. A snowdrift alongside the trail reared up and became a large polar bear. “I took off out of there,” he said. “But it was very scary because my snowmachine wasn’t running good and I was afraid I was going to have to walk back to town with that polar bear on my trail.”

He wanted to emulate his Inuit mentors, so he got himself some sled dogs. But he says polar bears are a constant problem for dog mushers. “There’s lots of polar bears now. They come right into town, and they hate dogs. A couple of years ago my neighbour phoned me one morning and said, ‘there’s a big polar bear coming down the street and he looks like he’s in a bad mood.’ The bear was heading right for my dogs. I opened the kitchen window and fired a shot to scare it off but it ignored me and killed one of my dogs with one slap. So I shot the bear.”

The CBC interviewed him, and qallunaat – white people – criticized him on the web site. “People were saying a polar bear is more valuable than a sled dog. Well, I work hard and I spend a lot of money on my dogs. A good dog is worth from two thousand to five thousand dollars. They said you should put your dogs in a ‘safe location.’ We don’t have safe locations. The bears walk right into the hamlet. Am I supposed to just stand there and watch when a bear starts killing my dogs?”

It's harder than ever to fight liberals on the spending/debt front, btw. They now enjoy the assistance of the FED which is stealing our wealth in a manner invisible to most through QEand other machinations. This makes paying the interest on the debt easier, and allows the can-kicking to continue.

Itisdelaying the problem of running out of money, the only thingwhich sinks collectivist enterprises.

Well not in the media for damn sure. Mostly you see it among individual people getting into it or occasionally on some talk radio programs.

Of course 'winning a debate' is different from convincing someone since people are far more emotion and gut-feeling-driven than they like to admit.

Plus liberals tend to have a internal reset button when it comes to arguments. You can debate them with facts and details and finally get them to grudingly accept your argument intellectually - but then 24 hours later they've mentally reset and are back to their original liberal mindset.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at January 29, 2013 06:07 PM (GsoHv)

274 OT: I have been doing some thinking, mainly about lengthening the political horizon for the right.

For example, there are those who say we should compromise with the President on the spending issues. OK, short term 2014, maybe you can dodge an angry electorate, if they really wanted more spending. That's a big assumption right there. And maybe if there is a big recession we could get blamed. But far more likely is that in 4-6 years when we are bringing up the spending issues that will not have been resolved, if we have given in much to Obama, the Dems will simply say "The deficit is bipartisan and the GOP signed off in it."

I think that is far more damaging than the chance that voters really do want profligate spending and its also worse than recession that probably won't be blamed solely on the GOP.

Now, on to immigration reform and Rubio. You may ask why is he pushing for this so soon? Partly, he wants some limelight and exposure - fair enough. But I also think that in 2014/2016 it would not be un-useful to have put this issue to bed. Just like with taxes now...they are DONE.

Now, I know everyone is worried by 11 million more citizens, but their economic harm if any, is already in play, and their political harm, in fact will mainly be in states that already are pretty left-wing, i.e. California.

But! But, we have people like Rubio coming up. Sure, he's "squish" on this one issue, but its also the one issue he can use to shove the Dems face into the ground. He can run in 2016, giving speeches in Spanish while Hillary/Biden/Who???? gives speeches in English only. There will be no more Amnesty to promise, so the Dems are out of bullets and they lose the cultural aspect of an actual candidate who is identifiable.

OK, so what? Well, do you guys remember growing up and how a lot of your politics were defined by Reagan? And I'm sure kids growing up now are defined by Obama or Clinton? And wouldn't that be a fine role model for young Hispanic kids...a guy who believes in the free market, etc.? Rubio could make Hispanics identify with him like that...and that kind of "brand choice" tends to keep going on.

Note: I am not a huge Rubio fan. I like Rand Paul more right now. Jindal and Perry okay too. And that is a very good thing, because the Dems will have....Hillary, Biden, Cuomo. Really, no one interesting.

285 >>>s. The contentious, fact driven sermons don't work at all.

which is part of what I was getting at by talking about story-telling in relation to the conversation experiment.

The right conceives itself as rationalist and that's all well and good but one must be cognizant of the fact that most people are not particularly rational.

Furthermore I think the right sometimes gets screwed up it its own faux form of strict rationalism. For example -- I'm not trying to relitigate this point, I am talking about the proper method of handling a political persuasion effort -- the right just says with regard to rape-abortion that if it's a baby then it logically follows it must be protected, else, it's murder.

That's true... so long as you restrict the parameters of inquiry to a single question, whether or not a fetus is a living thing.

The moment you introduce a complicating concept-- that the mother might have rights as well, including the right to not be raped (which was violated) and the right to not carry a baby to term she offered absolutely no consent in -- then that strict reasoning doesn't necessarily follow.

That is, "strict reasoning" is being confused with a different concept -- "reasoning based on a single variable, and which excludes other ones for the sake of rhetorical convenience or neatness."

At any rate, what ends up happening is you have thousands of people on twitter yelling "Teh baby did nothing wrong!" which is a fair enough point, but completely ignoring the other one -- "Neither did the mother."

And all those cries of the same point are having no effect (except on the already-persuaded) because they know that those offering that point are only looking at a single fact, and then only reasoning from that point. And they know (or, put it this way: They strongly BELIEVE) that that's wrong.

But I do hear people talk about "Absolute Moral Clarity" and they seem to mean that they're going to be very logical and very strict about conclusions -- but what they don't note is "I will also be ignoring a raft of complicating factors so that this syllogism is very direct and brief."

288 "This is the right's curse and also our hidden strength. We'll never be as lockstep organized as the left"

The left has never been organized because in America it has always been an uneasy coalition of interests, races and ideologies. For example, see the tightrope Obama has to walk on immigration reform to please social progressives without risking his union support. The right has one organizational advantage, being of one race and increasingly concentrated in one region and in one portion of the demographic spectrum. Leftist organizers will always be herding cats, but of course leftists have the lessons of organizers in the 1960s and 1970s. The Tea Party movement gave me some hope of widespread grassroots organization on the right (which is sorely needed, as the GOP is dysfunctional) but the enthusiasm of 2010 hasn't lasted.

289 249 Ace,

Well, it's a tough one. I took the DLAB and did "okay" and "in theory" that means one should have aptitude for picking up languages, but really it was a patterning and artificial language diagnostic. Reality is different and it was probably the differences between Latin and English that aided my guesswork.

Do your best when doing your ablutions and mapping your day in the morning and in the evening to think in French. If it is not going to be a source of ridicule if you have house mates speak the thought in English and think them in French and then repeat in reverse. If your objective is to be able to interact in a tourist business sense such as ordering food or services practice that fluency by thinking in French the verbal interactions necessary.

I'm certain you know that but mapping and the cognitive construct you use will aid in the integration of vocabulary to mental speed.

My son's progress using instant immersion Spanish was astounding.

best of luck,

297 "After all, as far as an information-per-second delivery mechanism, print essays provide much more data."

Print essays are stuffy, forced, and rigid and provide only one side of the argument.

"So why watch them? Well, I think because real-time interactions present something absent in controlled-environment carefully-vetted essays: drama. Someone could score a point, someone could be humiliated. A real-time interaction adds a human interest to the strictly logical/intellectual interest of an essay."

People like competition. They also like seeing whether an argument can sustain criticism, especially in real time.

"If we weren't story-centered creatures, we wouldn't bother with NASCAR races or track and field competitions -- we'd just have everyone singly run and record their best possible time, at at time most convenient to them, and then dryly compare race results when they all came in."

The subconscious, which is where enjoyment (usually) takes place, is not very good at abstract thinking.

"Now that I've nattered on about this, no, I don't think people yapping at each other in a forum is as exciting as a race; and it won't even be a debate, most of the time. (But it will still be a competition; life always is.)"

It's much more exciting than a race. :-)

Yeah that's one of the uglier qualities on the right. For some reason every public figure must be either a Knight or a Knave with no in between. And it's much tougher staying a Knight since with one wrong view or statement you'll be quickly cast down.

Sometimes when a new figure appears on the right you almost literally see people going through a mental checklist to find some reason to throw them into the pit of conservative villainy.

322 Ask the guys over at Powerline the importance of debate. Debate is useful in telling you much about the intelligence, wisdom, wit, thought process, priorities, etc about the debater. Ideally, you get an unfiltered and live view of the man or woman under pressure, and see how they handle themselves. You can get a sense of how "real" a person is. A skilled debater can convince the viewer of a position or argument, in a short and condensed form...ideal for those low info voters we all complain about (who don't read essays).

Unfortunately, what we are typically presented with as debates in politics are too controlled, too scripted, and too carefully practiced and planned around focus groups and polling to be of much use.

I took a sidejob delivering here in Indy metro I interact with hard working people, morally conservative in many ways, but lacking in good education by the public schools or self motivation on economics.

My God they do not understand ANYTHING about our monetary system, how wealth is created, the difference between wealth, income, and debt.

This is not "brag" this is just fact.

I started expalining basic stuff from "wealth of nations" such as what money is and is not, what savings and debt really represent, and how far we've strayed from it.

They got it, "capitalism hasn't failed if that is what capitalism is that's like me trying to find money for my auto body shop I want to start."

They are under the impression that the mega borrowing by the Federal Govt. is not impacting the availability of credit at all.

If I had talent, and better thought structure on communicating it I'd make a youtube or flash of Wealth of Nations geared at new economics students.

The texts they are using and the syllabus is atrocious on social sciences.

375 353 Guy Mohawk,

Hey I'm a loser or at least not Ace Incredible and if not a failure at least a at best say .400 hitter.

Of course I'm not looking for the safety hammock either.

I like someone whose failed some. Means they will try things and are more likely to be honest about their abilities or enthusiasm for a job. When I managed the pizza joint you could tell the college athletes were very "must must must" succeed types and it was great for them, but there was a girl who played guard for the team and was a math major who just could not interact with clients to save her life.

Nothing was going to make her personable enough with the intuition about how much interaction the client wanted.

Wasn't bad, wasn't willful she just couldn't fit in at the job.

Smarter than me by far, definitely better looking but we all have gifts, skills, and utility at different things.

I have a pretty good sense of urgency, and enjoy systems analysis and reverse engineering tax data. Forced myself to grasp some bio-rememdiation practices but in honesty though my most rewarding financial job, probably not my favorite or the one I was best at. Hell truth be told I would have been happier just being a cargo handler probably it was a hell of a workout.

You know it sort of sticks in my mind part of the reason I was psychologically a wreck was I was so desperate to beat Obama and could not STAND the thought of failure every slight misstep was like a knife in my brain.

Wonder if that is part of Mitt's stumbling or not going for the throat issue.

The overt media bias has us all probably feeling performance anxiety for the politicians we favor, and it must be orders of magnitude worse for them.

381 "Just because there are more Democrats in those states doesn't mean they don't exist at all."

Electorally, they don't exist. The GOP doesn't need to devote resources in a national election to courting Republicans in California, New York and Illinois. Of course, they don't have to devote too many resources to court Republicans in the South and Southwest either, but that's their base and they need those people to donate.

The drug war's negative consequences dwarf any reasonable expectation of reduction in drug use and addiction.

As per the linked article, it's not even clear that drug use would even rise.

385 "The drug war's negative consequences dwarf any reasonable expectation of reduction in drug use and addiction. "

*nods*

Besides, there are lots of intermediate steps between prohibition and legalization. Decriminalization is an option, as is simply directing that state and federal resources be spent elsewhere. We can stop putting so many people in prison for drugs, the drug war's most expensive consequence, without full-blown legalization.

393 It would be interesting if we had real debates, ones dedicated to one topic, not moderated by a biased nimrod and allowing the debaters to cross examine each other. 395 I think it's simpler than you're making it, Ace.

People don't like to think. It's work, skull-sweat, hard. Reading an essay is great, but it only presents - even if the author is good, one viewpoint.

A debate, though, not only *can* present more than one angle, in some ways it *must* present more than one angle, and that means the conclusions people get are .. pre-chewed, so to speak.

They watch a debate, and they get both the sound bites *and* a demonstration of how to use 'em. They're saved the heavy lifting of reading, for example, Jacobson on immigration, and Ace on .. whatever you're talking about this week where you disagree with Jacobson .. but now they can cite sound bites from both positions and .. done!
