Happy Tuesday.

France is "totally bankrupt," says the French labour minister. Hollande's government is now denying it vigorously, saying the labour minister "mispoke," but the flight of French capital from Hollande's insanely huge taxes is unmistakeable. I love the picture the Telegraph chose to illustrate this article.

Lucasfilm (now under the control of Disney) is cancelling the 3D re-releases of the previous movies, thank God.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is sending the state's new right-to-work law directly to the state Supreme Court for review. Unions were shopping around for their favorite lower court judges to stay the law pending review, so Snyder decided to moot that process and ask the Supremes to make with the final ruling already. Republicans currently have a 4-2 majority on the state Supreme Court, after a Democratic justice "retired" last month upon discovery of her extensive money laundering and property fraud.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 29, 2013. On this day in 1886 Karl Benz patented the gasoline automobile. So why are not all autos called “Benz”? Because at the time working in parallel people all over the world were building and patenting similar designs.

"I think the President understands the Constitution enough to know that he would prefer a different type of constitution. They would rather have positive rights, enumerated, that everyone has the right to water, housing, haircuts, you name it."

24 I had the unenviable task of rolling out a whole troop of Boy Scouts the other day, half an hour earlier than they're accustomed to. Luckily, I had memorized most of the Chief's reveille call, and it worked like a charm. Really, there's nothing like salty jargon to get a young man's gears grinding. "Huh? What's a trice?" is a real waker-upper.

I did have to change the cocks and socks thyme though. Until next week, you can't say that to Boy Scouts. So I did the Cub Scout version: "Drop your weenies and grab your beanies."

Thanks, Chief.

27 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. And thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. If I’d known we were going to start off by repeating that we’re all Victor Lazlo, I’d have a Casablanca story ready to go. But I don’t. Frankly, I think we’re all Sam, trying to coax a song out of a fake piano.

So on to today’s story: in MGM in the 1930s, seeing Louis B Mayer - if he didn't want to see you was nearly impossible. His outer office was the domain of a dragon lady named Ida Koverman, who looked like a stereotypical doting grandma, but, in the memories of old studio hands, was anything but.

Seeing Irving Thalberg, the "boy wonder" head of production, was easier, if no less a test of your mettle. There was a wide streak of passive-aggressiveness in Thalberg, and while he would readily agree to see you, it was just as likely you would wait in his outer office for hours or even days before the great man deigned to usher you into his presence. The Marx Brothers found this out in 1935, when they left Paramount for MGM.

Their first conference with Thalberg was set for 10am. They arrived on time, waited in the outer office for four hours and then left. Their conference was rescheduled for 2.00pm the next day; this time, they had to wait an hour before being shown into Thalberg's office. Groucho, for his part, blasted Thalberg right off the bat: "We've been stars in three Broadway shows, in vaudeville and in motion pictures. When we have an appointment, we are accustomed to having it kept. In the future, don't ever call us unless we can see you at the appointed hour."

Thalberg apologized, promising to be punctual from then on. And, when the Marxes had their next conference with Thalberg, the meeting began right on time. But after about twenty minutes, Thalberg was called away on "urgent business," leaving Groucho, Chico and Harpo to talk to an empty office "All right," said Harpo, "let's show him." They pushed filing cabinets up against Thalberg's door, climbed out of the window and left. The next time they met, Thalberg was on time, but again, in the middle of the meeting, got called away.

Harpo marched down to the studio commissary while Chico and Groucho stripped off their clothes and built a roaring fire in the office fireplace. When Thalberg finally returned, he found the three brothers, stark naked, sitting in front of the fire roasting potatoes.

"Wait a minute, boys!" he laughed, and called down to the commissary for butter for the potatoes.

He never walked out on them again.

It's absolutely fascinating if you're a fan of the Marxes, and an invaluable reminiscence of early vaudeville if you're not.

But it's all moot if they don't enforce the borders, which Rubio said will be part of the bill. Knowing that laws don't apply to TFG though, that part of the law will be ignored. If they added some kind of penalty to the government for non-enforcement of border security, it would make me feel better.

81 I don't know why people are expecting either house to stop this bill.

The fact is, if they don't pass something, TFG's gonna do it a la Reagan, and in the process we will have chaos along the border, worse than we have now.

In fact, this list of things that "must" be in the bill, debuting in his speech today, are the things that will give him an excuse to sign an EO if not every condition is met.

That's the point. There was also no way we could "fix" the Artciles of Confederation, We decided to do something else, and that time the states hung together. This time I'd do everything I could to see us split and realign.

It's not Akin it's the enforced climate of not being able to call Abortion exactly what it is - MURDER!

Gaze at pictures of a 1st trimester abortion and explain how it's not.

We have allowed the progressives and the media to define the debate and the means at which they fight.

If we have to cede ground at least lets make the case in a conservative/libertarian manner.

Personally I am against abortion, if a woman wants to murder her child the supreme court, though clearly misguided, has said that is her right.

She can murder her child, I do not want to pay for it and no tax revenues should go to paying for it.

And states or localities should be able to prohibit the services from being offered.

You may have a right to murder your child but you do not have the right to compel someone to do it for you!

135 On the worthless degree thing: My physical therapist has her various degrees and certifications on her wall. Her original degrees (I'm guessing before she realized they were worthless) were in music- right up through a Doctorate in Musical Theory (I kid you not).

Now, at some point not too long after that, she realized either a) that she hated music (you wouldn't figure that out after going to school for it for 8 years?), or b) that she couldn't make a living in "music theory," (more likely) so she went back and got a degree in human biology and then became a physical therapist.

On my last (and final, yay me!) visit, she and I and one of the other patients got to talking about musical theater (they both liked Les Mis, I watched it once as a teenager, and decided I didn't want to spend money to be depressed) and she vouchsafed that her daughter was in CA majoring in musical theater.

It was with some fortitude that I refrained from asking her, "Obviously that didn't work so well for you. Did you even consider telling her to major in a STEM degree, and minor in musical theater? Do you realize that most actors on Broadway don't even bother with "degrees" of any kind?"

As others have already stated the problem is that we have an uneven battlefield inflicted on us and our "allies" happily accept it.

Somehow in America I am responsible for every insane person's actions with a weapon, get credit for none of the good done with weapons, and should be personally singled out and frozen according to the media. This is called "reasonable knowledge and preparation info" by the media and politicians. They are undermining an enumerated right but "better tomorrow for the kids eleventy!"

We pro-lifers are not allowed to call "late term" what it is, murder. Barack Obama is not allowed to be questioned on TV as to why he favors letting babies die in a linen closet, and because his side is below replacement rate they love cyclic amnesty for illegal mexicans. This is called "commonsense morality."

I want a divorce because despite liking the tapioca pudding they serve at insane asylums, I don't really want the cognitive constructs prevalent there as baseline for my nation.

When the Councellers found her in 2010, she was unable to stand, and

time but were told to return the deer to the wild and let nature take
its course.

So they took the deer home.

152 I think Obama will fuck up the amnesty thing just like he fucked up gun control (which isn't going to happen).

Political power is a funny thing, much like a legal document: you can load it up so one-sided that you actually get a diminishing return on your efforts.

In law, for example, you present a document to the other side that is so one-sided you invite such a vigorous response from the other side that in the end you give up things you could have had but for the unnecessarily protracted negotiation.

Same thing in politics. Obama is, ironically, an absolutist (as he regularly accuses everyone else of being). It's his way or the highway as we all know. So, he comes on far too strong, and instead of the response being, "well, I don't know, maybe if we softened that a bit it might work," it instead comes back as, "what the fuck are you talking about? No way!"

This lack of deftness usually comes from people thinking they're smarter than everyone else ("of course it's right, I thought of it"), when in fact they are easily seen through by the smarter people around them, essentially ceding the board from the opening gambit because they told their opponent what they plan to do.

Lots of Soviet chicks have meaningless degrees too. When we were at Ft Bliss and I took up bagging as a side job I could do when wife was home with infant boy I met three Russian mail order brides. They had some interesting tales about "Life at the University of Moscow."

If anything it sounded more sane than life at University of Dayton but no more useful.

The cutest one admitted her economics degree was worthless because it was basically heh God I can still hear her too loud whisper "four year blowjob for Marx."

Add chunks of chicken and delicate matzoh balls. Serve and eat. Nom nom nom.

160 I think it is unfair to call Rubio a traitor and all that for his proposal. It is not amnesty, it doesn't provide instant amnesty for all illegals. It actually looks at fixing the legal immigration system which is badly broken and a cause of much of the illegal situation. And he proposes a restricted immigration status that does not qualify for welfare etc.

But none of that matters because as noted above the President isn't playing that game he doesn't care what the actual bill is so long as he can say that he did something for Hispanics and he can make Republicans eat a shit sandwich. I do fault Rubio for not understanding that.

"The newspaper map of one New York county’s pistol permits was riddled with problems, thanks to inaccurate data in official records, acknowledges the paper that published it. Just 3,907 of the 16,998 permit-holding households displayed on the Journal News‘ Rockland County map were current; the rest were classified as “historical,” with no updates in the past five years, explains Rockland’s county clerk. Some permits were issued as long ago as the 1930s; owners could have moved, ditched their guns, or died since then."

200 179 AllenG,

The problem again is we try to live up to the 'law." The right does not go passive-aggressive insurgent in thought enough. It is like the resistance to 1099ing everyone as a counter measure.

Your labor really is your own, and you can sell your services as low as you want via 1099.

The problem comes from the charming habit of the Feds then charging you self-employment tax loads.

I was a tax preparer not a CPA and although I know a lot of folks pay me as much mind as a used newspaper it doesn't bother me because I am in no way an "expert" on much of anything but 1990s standard Aviation focused hazmat work and even that is specialized mostly on DC-8 issues.

The thing is that the democrats are very unwieldy on precision in law writing nowadays, and they tend to get cute at blinding with high volume fire bullshit.

The shorter and more direct a law the easier it is to follow, and work around if need be but the fewer "regulators" you get to play with.

People would be scared if they understood how little "law" is really generated by their elected officials these days.

A politician would need 4500 pages on stop sign laws nowadays.

We are not a nation of laws we are a nation of lawyers.

203 AllenG, if you don't have a structure, the IRS can punch right thru those common boards. Especially if they share management and accounting resources.

It's not just an economic problem, it's an emotional one. Companies with less then 200 or so employees are like families. The owners likely know these people they have to lay off personally, then there is the ego associated with having a "big" company. So, making the right business decision may not happen if it causes too much angst.

That's all true enough. Jimmy Johnson of football fame was a corporate psychologist, and I'd enjoy asking him about the psychology of sub 500 employee units. Altering the corporate flow chart would carry some impact on our business culture to be certain.

Of course so is predatory regulation taking an impact.

I think we're closer to Rentes era Court of Versailles Business psychology than we are Henry Ford's.

214 Mr Pink you are arguing against a straw man. Show me how Rubio's proposal makes 15M new voters?

As a solution his proposal makes a lot of sense. We do need to fix legal immigration that will help the illegal part get fixed.

Problem is of course that he will get rolled because he is serious and the others are not. He will lose control of the narrative and a bad thing will happen and he will have his name stuck to it.

Theirs several hundred.

216 There is one group of people responsible for the shit we are in now and they are not "collective boomers". Because we had 50 years of not dieing on ANY hill.

What makes it a problem are the sheer magnitude of the numbers of people born between 1946 and 1964. That is the issue. Political affiliation has absolutely nothing to do with it. Your post acknowledges that fact, and then acknowledges that your generation did nothing about it ("Because we had 50 years of not dieing on ANY hill.")

Here, check it out: http://tinyurl.com/be6aoll

BTW...NO generation is doing anything about it.

May not be the case much longer, Allen. My Mema's church is still old school, fire and brimstone CoC. Parking lot on Sunday has about three cars and a lot of tumbleweeds. My aunt's CoC is loosey goosey new-fangled, with a full parking lot and cars covered with Hope and Change stickers. A good section of the CoC has embraced the "seeker" movement and watered their beliefs down accordingly.

Yup. Exactly. Tuition has rose faster than healthcare costs, one is a crisis requiring "you have to pass it to find out what's in it!" and can only be fixed by giving donks "make a wish super powers" and the other one just needs more money thrown at it!

No racket at all...

And how, exactly, is that "defending "Akin?" Like Phoenix said, if all it took wasAkin'scomment from Octoberish to make someone change his mind in Freaking January, then that person wasn't pro-life to begin with.

Gabe's schtick is blaming conservative setbacks on the, as he puts it, "extreme right wing." Blaming Akin for a 24/7 liberal/media drumbeat about defining abortion as "women's rights" is extraordinarily facile.

So I'll spell it out....Akin said something dumb and his insisting upon staying in the race was even dumber. But unless Gabe wants to point out crosstabs in Rasmussen's poll where respondents said "yeah, I changed my mind because of Akin," blaming Akin is a gratuitous jab at a wing of the Republican party Gabe has a problem with.

Truman,

Here's a better plan that my son used:

Step 1) Forget about college.
Step 2) Obtain a number of Microsoft and Cisco certifications, start servicing small and medium sized businesses.
Step 3) Sell your small company to an expanding office information systems company for mid-six figures and accept the job of managing the new division for six figures plus bonuses based on profits.

Works every time.

230 The GOP should understand that it, if it continues to let the NYT determine its possible and acceptable courses of action, could become incredibly irrelevant to the *real* discussions more and more Americans are having on the future of this nation. Absolutely irrelevant, superseded by events.

Could. No guarantees. On that uncertainty they will have to make their decisions.

232 We would be in a much better position to achieve immigration reform if the Obama Administration had spent that last four years enforcing federal law rather than dismantling it. Brave immigration agents have been left with no recourse but to sue their own Department head, simply so that they—like any other law officers—will be allowed to do their jobs. Just last Friday a federal judge made an important preliminary ruling in their favor. The ICE union also held their own agency head, John Morton, in no confidence with a unanimous vote. The first task for every media agency in the country ought to be to study this lawsuit, to listen to the long-documented complaints of ICE agents, and to review the record of stymied attempts at congressional oversight of DHS.

233 As far as the practical matters of this latest travesty of statecraft called "immigration reform"--it took twenty-seven years of *deliberate* border neglect to cause this issue. I would want to see a generations worth of effective enforcement before anything, for the trust is not there. Naturally, I will get nothing.

I simply no longer have a desire to be part of the United States, for it has broken faith with me, and yet expects me to be held to all my obligations, especially as I am not a member of the New Aristocracy--black, brown, or Progressive.

Posted by: V. at January 29, 2013 09:34 AM (D5Jpp)

234 As far as possible time periods of possibly effective border control--I don't have a time machine, but if I had some way to peer into the future, my feeling is that the *best* case would be five years of enforcement, then the same thing as before.

If you believe this, your analytical abilities are either significantly impaired or you're looking for excuses. In Gabe's case, I'll go with the latter. In case someone thinks this is somehow a defense of Akin, I'll go with the former.

241 33,24 allowing gay scout masters won't hurt the BSA anymore than allowing gays hurt the IDF in 1993 and the US military in 2011. Im an Eagle Scout still active in my troop and though I learned almost as much from my scoutmaster as I do from you Morons, having an adult role model in high school teaching me that gays are people too wouldn't have hurt. I didn't learn that until I enlisted unfortunately.

And hey as I said before I'm torn on immigration, but assuming we still have a military after amnesty I think we will have a ton of Hispanics outside the Marine recruiters office, at least long before hip gringo liberal kids (and sadly even conservative kids) sign up.

No, seven percent of those polled.

16.3% of the self self identified pro-life respondents left. Because of Akin?

Maybe. Romney sure kicked ass though didn't? And that Scott Brown! Whoo boy! There's a winner!

Like all serious convictions regarding the destruction of innocent human life without due process permitted on flimsy constitutional grounds and bizarre euphemisms such as 'removal of foetal tissue mass' 'health of the mother' and 'prochoice', anti-abortion sentiments had to be abandoned by the more nuanced sophisticates when it suddenly didn't seem fashionable anymore.

The GOP is as clever as a cloud. It can take any shape you want to see in it, but don't ever think you can stand on it.
