Gun Statistics -UPDATED with correction

Correction: Yikes. The stats were Richard Florida's, not Klein's. Klein just parroted them.
Original post below.
............................

Last week, Geoff of The Chart™ fame, over at Innocent Bystanders took Ezra Klein to task for his misleading stats on gun crime, here.

You will especially like the part where Geoff helpfully points out that trigger locks are maybe not so helpful for preventing most suicides and homicides, which Klein's 'analysis' would absolutely imply.

Either Klein cannot properly construct a statistical analysis, or he is integrity-challenged and actively trying to deceive his readers.

Geoff follows up this week with an item from The Washington Times that examines the correlation between gun laws and gun crimes.

Follow the link-through to the WT. It may not be all that you think.

One bit that I found surprising was the statement that poor folks who live in crappy neighborhoods benefit the most from the enhanced personal safety provided by gun ownership. I wasn't surprised by the fact -I have known this since I used to live in a crappy 'hood. I was surprised to see that fact published, in English, in an American newspaper.

If you claim to care about poor people trapped in dangerous neighborhoods, then tightening gun restrictions is the last thing you should do. And pricing ammunition or guns out of the reach of the poor is bad practice as well.

And yet, most urban mayors think that loosening gun restrictions is for the country folk, and not for themselves.

Think again, guys.

I refuse to limit my answer to only one of those.

NC has a law that you must carry on your person a written permission slip to hunt the property, or you are guilty of trespass. Old boys were telling game wardens that farmer joe let them hunt there and the warden couldn't find farmer jos so he would let him go. Not anymore, they arrest them right there. Call the game warden, not the cops. The cops aren't going to come.

38 Klein is the poster boy for Ace's omnicompetent journalist delusion theory.

My interaction, as such with Exhibit 2, Yglesias, was a while back. Matt made a statement that he wish he knew something about his grandfather who served in WWII in Italy in an aviation matter.

Given the name and location, about three minutes of Googling later, I had the guy, the dates of service, and the awards he had (turned out he had a decoration for bravery, iirc).

Point being, if Matt can't bestir himself to spend three minutes educating himself about something he claims to be interested in, that doesn't speak well, generally, of his ability to educate himself at all.

Ha. Ezra Klein. Another hipster pop darling journalistof the left. A smug turd at best and Lotus Eater. Let us break it down, my brothers and sisters. Washington DC, which in someneighborhoods could be akin to Khandahar, Afghanistan, has either the most restrictive weapon laws or damn near close (someone correct me if I am wrong). And their homicide / crime stats would make one think that said city was smack in the middle of Afghanistan or Africa. So yeah, great thing those restrictive gun laws. Seattle is going through its own gyrations and mental masturbation over proposing new laws. The problem I have and LauraW alluded to it is the city government. The mayor and semi retarded city counsel dwell in condos, shop at Whole Foods and walk with their two children (usually of the canine variety- not REAL children) in a small bubble of prosperity in the city. They are out of touch with normal people who do not live such privileged lives, such as their consituents in the Rainier Valley, which is where many "urban folk" live and are gunned down by gangs, thugs and other assorted urchins. Dammit I am rambling again. But you guys get my point. Seattle + liberal+ liberal city govt = retarded policies and laws that get you victimized / jailed.

==========
One of the jobs I had in college was reading water meters for the local town. That was back in the days when you had to go into people's basements to get to the meter.

It can be argued that the town where I grew up was simply one big skeevey neighborhood, but one of my routes went through one of the skeeviest parts. And yet in the middle of all this mess was a neatly kept little house with a well groomed yard. I knocked on the back door of this house and an older black gentleman answered. He, as well as the inside of the house, were just as well kept as the outside.

After I read his meter and was leaving I noticed a short-barreled pump shotgun standing in the corner by the back door. He must have noticed the look on my face because he looked at me and said: "That's right son, we black folks have to protect ourselves from the n*****s just like you white folks do.

94 And yet, most urban mayors think that loosening gun restrictions is for the country folk, and not for themselves.

JugEars himself made a statement back in '08 about gun laws where "laws that work in rural areas don't necessarily work in the cities". But of course, this commie cocksucker sees nothing wrong with imposing urban laws on rural areas.

This leaves aside the question of the civil rights of the law abiding urban poor.

98 I lived in a crappy hood too. I left in Sept. '12.
I started having dreams where, in the dream I was asleep and awakened either by a mob pounding on my door or someone jiggling my door handle trying to break in.

It was awful because it was very vivid and often I would dream that I had gotten up to check the door and hear/see nothing and then dream that I went back to sleep only to be awoken again, in the dream, to the same thing. I would try to wake up but I was paralyzed and when I finally did wake up my adrenaline was pumping so I couldn't go back to sleep for hours.

Then one night I was up late (around 4-5 am) and wide awake when someone came to my door and started messing with the lock and doorknob. I got my SW .40 semiautomatic handgun out, walked to the door and loudly chambered a round. The dreams stopped. A few months later I moved to a much better area.

179 Maryland --- There are nice places in the western mountains. I suppose it wouldn't be too horrible to live in Frederick, if it weren't in Maryland.

Annapolis would be very nice, if you could afford it and it weren't in Maryland.

The Eastern Shore! Nice! I finally got down to the St. Mary's area a couple of years ago when one of the kids was looking at St. Mary's College, which is wonderful, like an itty-bitty William & Mary. It would be a fantastic town to live in, if it weren't in Maryland.

And I like Baltimore --- the Harbor, Fells Point, Little Italy, the Walters Museum. If I were stinking filthy rich, I might live in an old townhouse in the Washington monument area or a condo in the Domino building. It would be nice, if it weren't in Baltimore and in Maryland.

I'll stick with Virginia. For now.

I think that's all she wants. Argentina has signs at all of its borders proclaiming itself the rightful owners of the Falklands. It's fascist national pride and propaganda.

And being able to bring up the resentment for perceived slights is good for distracting the populace.

BTW, Argentina is 97% white, the Falklands are 400 miles from Argentina (and for that matter about that far from Chile) and have no native population. Nobody had ever lived there until Europeans discovered the islands.

Interestingly enough, Planned Parenthood kills that many African-American babies in this country every 2-3 days.....

(Incidentally, North America only accounted for 5% of the Atlantlc slave trade - the bulk of the rest of those slaves went to South American countries, where most of them were literally worked to death)

289 I've lived in Virginia for 30 years. That's long enough to spoiler-vote for Jesse Jackson in Democratic primaries at least once.

I remember a guy saying to his kid in the hippie-sandwich-shop I worked in during college when Doug Wilder was running: "the Guv'nor's mansion is no place for a goddamn n*gger." Wilder won, of course, and became the serial whiner he's known to be today. Even so, it was a marker.

I also worked in a concrete plant in Woodbridge during college summers, where a banner above the forms read "Virginia Is A Working State." In other venues, that might be read as a proletarian endorsement; it wasn't then--it was pride in employment, productivity, and profitability. That was 1987 or so.

I was a military brat, and was so glad to be able to call a place "home." Virginia is my home. I'm stunned that it's a swing state.

All that is over. Virginia is a state of carpetbagging opportunists. My congressman, Jim Moran, is a tenured disgrace. We have two Democratic senators, one an ideological turncoat and the other a vanity officeholder. We'll lose said guv'nor's mansion to Clinton hitman/shitheel Terry McAuliffe.

Virginia is quickly shifting into "reliable blue state" based on Northern Virginia federal parasitism and minority voting; Tidewater, Charlottesville, and Richmond voting completes the liberal turn.

Virginia is, probably irretrievably, a blue state.

Posted by: mallfly at January 26, 2013 03:34 PM (bJm7W)

302 >>those poor people who live in crappy neighborhoods have already lost their 2nd Amendment rights.

Wrong. Those poor people who live in crappy neighborhoods didn't work hard enough--or have lacked incentive enough--to move to a labor-poor area to get rich enough to live in "good" neighborhoods. America was built by people from "crappy neighborhoods" who worked hard to get out of those neighborhoods.

1. Guns are "needed" where they can be afforded. Those areas where they can't be afforded are probably the last place they should be.

2. The NRA ought not speak up for specific minorities. Plenty of government organizations "speak up" for minorities. Comes a time when individuals have to "speak up" for themselves.

"Will the (fill in the blank) speak up for them?"

This is the linchpin of the problem--whiners always waiting for someone to "speak up for them."

Look up Gary Kleck's Point Blank if you can - Florida professor intended to write a book advocating gun bans, did the math, wrote a book strongly endorsing gun ownership.

WRT where criminals get guns, FBI does have some stats on that but it's buried in reports and not on their stats page (not in detail). It's been analyzed by NRA, John Lott, Cramer, some other writers and is in books on the subject. It can be hard to find online because of the sheer volume of propaganda that has been spewed on the subject.

The percentage of crime guns obtained illegally is about 80% from 1981 to 1997, according to James Wright and the DOJ. These kind of things tend to be compiled *very* late. The "gun show" percentage was 0.7%.

I recall a more recent study but haven't found it in the last few minutes and don't remeber the name yet. Maybe next gun thread...

Unfortunately 99% of The Internet is propaganda and/or people repeating anecdotes with varying degrees of fidelity and no sources or links.

Also, post-Holder trace data from the DOJ is a total fucking sham and untrustworthy - they have openly lied about the numbers.

During those years, my life and property still had value, and I needed to protect myself.

1. Guns are "needed" where they can be afforded. Those areas where they
can't be afforded are probably the last place they should be.
