ONT for Friday 1/25/2013: Animal Husbandry Edition

By the time you read this, 'Rons & 'Ettes, I'll be knee-deep in drunkards and barflies down at the ol' salt mine. It's currently just before the ungodly hour of 10:00 AM -- a time not generally recognized in AoS culture and lifestyle. But, being the selfless team player/consummate brown-noser that I am, I thought I'd go ahead and throw something together for you people to look at before I start my workweek.

Now, last night's ONT had its high and low points. By nearly all accounts, the video of the chick in the bikini riding in a Lamborghini was well received. However, the goat balls didn't go over quite as well. I don't know why. I've never tried them, but some folks say they're delicious. I suppose I may have trod upon the delicate sensibilities of a few goat-fanciers among the horde. So, to that end, here's something to make up for it.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with goats aside from watching videos of the ones that "faint" when you startle them. Though, I understand even run-of-the-mill domesticated goats can be entertaining. But, when it comes to animal-related entertainment, the high drama of African wildlife documentaries is tough to beat. The raw, gut-level emotion pulls me in every time.

That's not to say there isn't plenty of enjoyment to be had with the less exotic creatures who inhabit our daily lives. After all, if we didn't derive some degree of pleasure from having them in our midst, mankind never would have domesticated them in the first place. And, while the family dog may not provide the moments of high drama one gets from watching a big cat stalk its prey, our lives are immensely richer for their presence.

You see, family pets offer huge benefits to their owners and ask very little in return. All they really want is a warm, dry place to sleep, something to eat, the occasional treat, and a little bit of familial attention now and then. They're far more low-maintenance than any of the humans you have in your life. After all, what person do you know who would be elated upon being presented with a gift so seemingly insignificant as a sock?

Humans, on the other hand, are terribly complicated creatures. And, as such, they bring complications with them when they enter your life. With pets, you pretty much have the same dog throughout its life with you. There may be changes in their energy level, weight, mobility, etc. as they age, but you're not going to wake up one day and discover that your dog isn't the same dog it was when you first got him. (Well, unless he gets the hydrophobie.)

People, however, you just never truly know:

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The man who was the voice of Charlie Brown in several "Peanuts" television shows was charged Wednesday with stalking and threatening his former girlfriend and a plastic surgeon who gave her a breast enhancement that he paid for before the relationship ended.

Peter Robbins pleaded not guilty Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court to two counts of stalking and 10 counts of making criminal threats.

Attempts to contact fellow guest-blogger CBD have been unsuccessful.

So, there's your Friday night ONT for January 25, 2013. I hope you enjoy it while I'm working a hole in the floor attending to the needs of my thirsty patrons this evening. If you would like to show your appreciation for all the time and effort I put into creating this post for your benefit, pay it forward by tipping your bartender generously.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by impoverished bartenders.

4 Hello there ladies & gents.

I have been talking about wanting and shopping for an AR, for awhile now. So, yesterday DiFi introduced her "legislation". Who knows what will actually pass, to infringe on our 2nd Amendment.

So, I finally "bit the bullet" (pun intended), yesterday afternoon.

8 Jeeeeebus. Employee of my husband's when we lived in IL just called, drunk as hell, to tell us his wife died "some time the middle of January."

She was in her late 40s-early 50s and he slurred, "she died in her sleep, could have been her heart, who knows."

I'm beyond words. Husband is out with a friend who is moving back north next week.

Dammit.

I made 3 phone calls, and our "homeboys" at the local "good guys", country, sporting goods, had just received a UPS shipment, literally 15 minutes before my call.

I asked him to "hold them" and he said "give me a credit card number." I told him not sight-unseen. He said "if you want them then you better come quick, because I am about to put them on display on the floor, and I promise you they'll be gone before the end of the day." I proceeded post-haste.

I went with my sister and friends of hers to a new bar in town, and at one point I asked for a scotch sour. I got a shot glass' worth of something called sour puss with maybe some scotch , which was maroon in color. Apparently sour puss is some sort of liqueur. I should have gone up to the bar.

Vice-President Joe Biden has declared that the abridgment of our 2nd Amendment civil liberties is worth it if “it saves a single life.” This was echoed by Pres. Obama when he unveiled his 23-skidoo declarations against the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

90 To Save A Single Life

Vice-President Joe Biden has declared that the abridgment of our 2nd Amendment civil liberties is worth it if “it saves a single life.” This was echoed by Pres. Obama when he unveiled his 23-skidoo declarations against the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Animal husbandry. my history.

next door neighbor works at chicken egg house. offers me chickens. i put up fence. makeshift electrified. procure chicen feed. chickens lay eggs. collect eggs. see that egg production is diminished. see chicken hulls laying about. set up at night in 12-foot step ladder and lay await. shoot 5 'coons and one really 'narly skunk. chicken hulls persist. shoot a skunk inside building. nearly go blind from skunk chemical inhalation in close quarters. sneek back inside building days later. see barn owl eating chicken.
decide barn owl deserves chicken more than me. surrender.

give remaining flock back to neighbor . make cornbread from chicken feed. buy eggs from wife's best friend.

119 It should be easy for anyone to make the argument that part of the "motivation" for mass shootings is similar to the reason for the abundance of high/low speed chases in California.

There are more high speed chases in California. Why? Because of the weather and the street layout and also the fact that every damn tv station and radio station has a helicopter, usually already in the air for weather or traffic, and will follow the chase.

Because it gets on TV, it gets copied, mimicked, it become part of the "cultural" zeitgeist and when folks get into a certain mindset they say, "fuck yeah, that's what I'll do. Plus I'll be on TV"

Same psychology (if that's the right word) for shooters.

These people know they're never going to be famous otherwise, they'll never be remembered or looked up to so a chase or a TV headline is the best they'll ever do.

It's fucking pitiful.

I guarantee that if they stopped making such a big deal out of these sick bastards (and stopped the Gun Free Zone nonsense) the number of incidents would decline.

126 We paid "way" over MSRP on the rifles, and they definitely gouge on the accessories prices.

I'd do it differently, in retrospect, but it's a done deal. I would have done a lot more negotiating, but "Big Daddy" negotiated the 12.5%, and broke out the plastic (for just shy of $10K). It was a "panic", spur of the minute buy, and looking back, it was all kind of a whirlwind.

So, I'm having a "payroll deduction" of $25/week -- from now on. Big whoop! I really won't feel that at all, but at that payment scheme, it's practically "forever". But, hey, it is a zero interest loan!

I suppose I'm an indentured servant now. A few trips to the range later, I'll try to negotiate having it "forgiven" as a "bonus".

And I just broke the news to Mrs. this PM. That conversation went surprisingly well...I think she's still shocked.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

http://tinyurl.com/aw6tukk

Here's the highlights:

1) The Zerg invade planets by dropping "pods" of shock-drops from a flying creature approximately 5-10x the size of the Cloverfield monster. Kinda reminds me of Final Doom: TNT.

2) Terran pilots watch too much Michael Bay Transformer movies (a solo plane transforms mid-air into a walking-mech and completely fails at soloing the ultralisk). Think of it as a high-tech "hold my beer, watch this shit" stunt.

3) The Terran player is a bit of a noob - doesn't set up bunkers to protect the marines or SCVs to repair the siege tanks, although there *was* a little bit of hope that the waves of gauss-fire and shells might slow down the Zerg onslaught.

4) Kerrigan has a bit of purple on her face. This is important somehow, I'm sure.

5) Ah, the "it's a dream/foreshadowing" gambit!

That's the rub. Ammo is expensive, and hard to come by. I need to zero and then calibrate the scope.

Then I want she, and our 2 teenage boys, to go to the range and familiarize and be comfortable with it (and I bought her those cool, pink, hello-kitty ear muffs already, when we did clays at Dad's over the holiday's). She's not scared, just conscientious, AND FRUGAL!

I actually just joined the NRA, but she has been member for like 16 years. Just because... Politically. Never having owned a gun herself.

If they are smart this will reboot the series. Start with the crash on Macross Island, gloss over the Unification Wars, and then drop a Zentradi battle fleet on Earth. Perhaps make Minmei a few years older to jettison the Lolita angle. Hayase Misa can stay the cougar with the seeming ice water in the veins.

Some things just don't have anywhere the same impact after you grow up.

If they have mecha, better than average dialog, and an actual plot then it could be ok.

Not that I care, but if they really try to slavishly imitate Minmay it will be unwatchable.

I've not zeroed a scope before, being a handgun and shotgun guy, so I'm sure others here can better explain this.

I dropped the lower on my new rifle, remove one pin and then the bolt (not hard at all. see youtube) and bore-sighted it to the new scope at 75' in my basement (wide house). I'm hoping this will make it easier when I get to the range to get it dialed in.

Restricting the ammo is the last move of these fucks I think. Except perhaps for 7.62.

Mags is the most important acquisition as of now.

We can only hope that the Supreme Court steps in in Heller II or some other challenge, such as the Cook County challenge, on these stupid AWB bills.

Reasoning of Heller leaves little doubt. Except that two Repub. appointees in Heller II in the DC Circuit fucked up big time and upheld the stupid AWB of D.C.

I cannot understand it. Judge Kavanaugh's dissent is very very persuasive and anyone with a fucking brain would agree.

Heller II represents a fucking lightning bolt to the fascists. It could potentially, if subjected to Supreme Court review and decided the right way, knock out the fucking ban on EBRs, knock out the 10 round mag restriction that psychos and criminals and anyone with a fucking 3D printer can ignore, and strike down a requirement to register every weapon.

If we can do that, then the Second Amendment is preserved for all time. God willing, we shall get such a ruling as it is absolutely the right ruling based on the relevant Sup. Ct. precedent.

The range I belong to has 100 yard bays. I can set my target at a minimum of 50 yards, out to 100 yards.

My once perfect vision has turned to crap, so I'll start with 50 yds, and hopefully dial in at 100. Right now I am using an "economical" 1-4x24 scope, and I probably can't see much beyond 100 yds anyway. As I recall, 5.56/.223 and .22LR bore diameters are slightly different, like one or two thousandths of an inch. That's why there are accuracy issues in the conversion kits, and I believe that CCI makes some special AR-specific .22LR ammo that tries to solve some of the issues in the conversion kits.

Still worthwhile, though.

325 In McDonald v. Chicago 2010 (the latest of the SCOTUS rulings) The Supreme Court Affirmed the Intent of the Second Amendment.

So, supposedly, for the time being at least, the 2nd Amendment is strong and secure. The Supreme Court got this one right.

But, it’s a victory that we got by only the slimmest of margins. Only 5 of the 9 Justices understood the right to bear arms as applicable to the states via the 2nd, through the G_d damned "14th Amendment".

As Breyer wrote, and Sotomeyor concurred: “I can find nothing in the Second Amendment’s text, history or underlying rationale that could warrant characterizing it as ‘fundamental’ insofar as it seeks to protect the keeping and bearing of arms for private self-defense purposes.”

The states delegated ONLY 16 unique, DISCRETE powers to the new federal government, and all of those powers concern "nationhood".

In short, the Constitution ONLY authorizes the feds to regulate in areas of national defense, foreign affairs, keeping interstate commerce regular, establishing a post office, coining money and setting the value, protecting patents and artistic creations, and keeping the nation free.

The areas of personal health, safety, welfare and morality were not delegated to the feds and were intended to be retained by the States.

Yet the Court has no problem determining that the 14th Amendment requires religion to be taken out of every facet of public life.

What part of "Congress shall not establish..." and "... shall not be infringed..." do they not understand?

My wife's Great Great something made a name and a good deal of money for himself making wagon weals for the westward expansion and industry, according to Rohs (pronounced Ross) family lore. So they built the Rohs Opera House in Cythiana, Ky.The Opera House has been reopened. The commute from Rock Hill back to Charlotte "ONLY" took an hour at 5 PM. I-77 N was slick, but not terribly bad. 2 passable wrecks on the right, with the red and blue lights made for "gawking". Slowing ALL. The southbound, on the other hand, was "stand-still".

I picked-up #2 kid at "not-my-girlfriend's", liquor store, beer and cigs at the Kangaroo, beef at Harris-Teeter, and was home at 10 'til 7. All-in-all not bad.

Oil change and rotation, and changing out the antennae on the Sequoia for #1 dependent tommorow AM. But, "blessedly" NO football this weekend. I have promised myself a nap in the afternoon.

Hair-ball brothers next weekend. '49'ers just because NFC (and Kaepernick, I guess). But, please G_d don't let that mutha-fucka, "acquitted" killer Ray Lewis get "the jewelry" on his way out!

That's funny. My SIL walked in one day when I was learning a fast song along with the CD. I was trying as hard as I could to keep up.

She looked at my wife, and said, "Why is he moving his mouth like that?"

Who knew?

422 My life has completely revolved around guitar. I mean off the deep end. For almost 25 years I played 5 hours a day, and probably 2-3 hours a day for another 10 years on top of that when not in a band. Even when I'm here there is a 90% chance there is a guitar in my hands. I'll tell you point blank, 1 hour a day is the bare minimum you can do and get anywhere in any kind of reasonable time frame. You have to build muscle memory. Your brain may forget but your hands will remember and save your ass, but that takes serious time to build. At one hour a day you are just getting warmed up where the muscle memory starts to get its training. Think of it as doing a bunch of stretches to get ready for a workout, but not ever getting to the workout, thats what 1 hour a day is basically doing. At that rate you will advance, but it only amounts to 7 hours a week. Then again it really depends on how good you want to be.

Some people have been saying for *years* (myself included) that medicine just plain doesn't work the same for everyone. There's finally some serious research being done matching medicines to DNA and finding out if there's a genetic reason why some people are "immune" to some medicine or have worse side effects, etc.

Some are already being found. Eventually you'll need a DNA profile to treat effectively (with drugs anyway).

And maybe some of that regulatory weirdness can be undone (HA!).

???????????

If you're talking about Black Talon, the *only* reason that was banned is because it "looks and sounds scary." There's nothing even unusual about it as far as design, it's a managed-deforming hollow-point, like a Silvertip or Hydra-Shok.

But the advertising for the BT made it sound like a buzzsaw - all ammo except smoothbore shotguns and cannons "spins." "Spirals" is a better word.

I think the estimate was that the BT under normal conditions would rotate like four and a half times before stopping after impact.

But, once again, crazed maniac ignorant politicians, like the bans after those mass shirukenings and nunchukings.

I'm still fucking pissed I can't get a sectional staff legally. WTF? I don't think anyone has ever even used one of those while jaywalking. How incredibly moronic.

Yes, in the East mayonnaise is known as Hellman's, in the West it is Best Foods.

There are some other products in the store next to it, but they look suspicious to me.

For Serious - every other brand I've tried tastes like "diet mayonnaise" and is freaking horrible. YMMV as may your taste buds, but there you are - one more asshole with an opinion.

A bit of random Boehner related news:

As part of a romantic comedy sketch acted out on a recent Korean variety show, popular TV personality Gili Kim embraced beautiful Jimin Kim and lifted her up in the air. From there, tragically, physiological instincts took over, leaving poor Gili with no way of concealing his excitement. The images were soon shared thousands of times via Twitter and Korean Internet bulletin boards, prompting the star to speak out and admit that he may have become lost in the moment.

“This was a misunderstanding,” Gili is reported to have said in regard to his spontaneous trouser protrusion. “My emotions took over and I wasn’t able to maintain control.”

Speaking of cars...the Heart of Carolina Mustang Club will be having their show on the 13th of April at Cary Towne Center Mall in Cary NC. We're doing it early this year because the national show will be in Charlotte next year for the Mustang's 50th.

What does she do with the machine now? If it lacks USB ports it has to date to 1996 or earlier. Anything you get her, no matter how cheap, is going to be a massive upgrade.

Do you have any aging machines of your own? Perhaps you should give yourself an upgrade and let her have the old, but much newer than what she has, machine after a bit of refurbishment.

Look at places that sell refurb PCs. You can get a Core 2 Duo business desktop for under $200 these days. That is without a monitor but you can get a pretty decent 20" LCD for under $100 new these days.

I just love that story.

Actually, that is dual core. The Pentium brand is now used for the bargain basement where they once applied the Celeron brand. (Although Celeron still turns up for added confusion to represent a somewhat lesser product.) A currently shipping machine with a Pentium is actually a fairly recent core architecture with big features unavailable, like hyperthreading and turbo modes. The most recent Pentium branded processor is a cut down version of the Ivy Bridge Core i3

So, a Pentium system is inferior but chances are your Mom won't know the different and having a reasonably up to date system in her home will make things easier for YOU.

I wanna give beef tongue a shot.

Anyone have a simple easy to do recipe that doesn't suck?

Posted by: Robert at January 25, 2013 11:30 PM (LUnTP)

Here's one. Wash the tongue and place in a dutch oven. Add a peeled, whole onion with a half dozen cloves stuck in it, a teaspoon of whole peppercorns, and a carrot. Cover with water, add a couple of glugs of cider vinegar. Cover, bring to a boil, and then turn down to a very low simmer for 3 hours.Remove from water, let set for 10 minutes, then peel the outer skin from the tongue. Slice thinly crosswise and serve either with a brown gravy or with a good, strong German mustard. Some people like a horseradish sauce with it.Moving from the tasty to the serious, mention was made of the idea of using 3D printers to make AR mags. It has been done, and they work. Forbes magazine had an article on it that included a link to the designers, and they have the program available for download. It strikes me that in the difficult times ahead that having copies of that program circulating on thumbdrives might be a good thing. 3D printers used to cost $50K. They are down to $1-3K.http://tinyurl.com/au3a5yoJust sayin'.

For what it's worth, the Toyota/Lexus bad transmission meme is directly due to Toyota's stupid, stupid recommendation that ATF changes are unnecessary for the life of the vehicle--unless one is a frequent tower. I've ignored their advice and change my ATF ever 30k miles.
Also, I bought two Raspberry Pis months ago knowing that they'd go out of stock. I'd not recommend paying any more than list price from newark.com unless you're a hyper-nerd and absolutely must have tiny computing devices.

Fair enough. As my vehicle is getting long in the tooth, I've been wondering what I'd replace it with once that time comes.

I'm interested in a vehicle with the following qualities:

1) 4WD
2) has interior space to store enough shit to fill a studio apartment
3) comfortable during interstate drives
4) doesn't have horrific fuel consumption

Any ideas? Until turbo diesels become popular here, I'm pretty much doomed to the RX or Infiniti FX/Nissan whatevs.

Nothing cheap. I tend to look at European cars because:

A) Manual option
B) More RWD/AWD choices
C) Tend to "get" comfort/handling balance

In the latter case, most car manufacturers can do comfort or cornering but not both. Audi, BMW, etc do both. Even Volvo, though long-term quality suffers. Even VW, though short- and long-term quality suffers.

The Toys I've driven have felt kind of numb and disconnected, and discourage approaching limits. Not as bad as a 90s Dodge or anything, but there you go.

If you want to be high off the ground, I kind of shrug. Not My World. I don't really know who does that well.

I have never owned a front-wheel drive car. They have come up with a lot of suspension tricks to keep them from being unstable, primarily "plowing like an overworked subsistence farmer."

I am a performance car nerd, though you wouldn't know it from the car I drive now - it was an emergency choice that became permanent.

Frankly, the Subaru models were nearly as expensive as the Lexus which was cushier (and had the cool in-dash GPS). These were important when a contract would dry up and you'd have to drive across country for the next one.

The rebodied Celica that's named after the Corolla?

It's probably kind of fun, but unlike a lot of famous Japanese performance cars, it does seem to have a limited upgrade path. Small, high-strung naturally-aspirated engine.

640 Auto vs. stick -- nowadays, the old argument about better gas mileage from the manual tranny is mostly untrue. Th edge might even go to the autos these days.

But the fun factor is a completely separate issue and the stick wins hands down. You actually have to participate in driving a stick whereas an auto trans is more plug n play.

641 The rebodied Celica that's named after the Corolla?

The Subaru guys proudly maintain that Toyota's involvement was mostly in some engine technology, mainly direct-injection.

I
don't live in a granola-munching Forester enclave, so I cut Subaru a
lot of slack for its unambiguous full-throated chirping-turbo rally-car
prowess.

644 With regard to cars: I am not a fan boy. I am interested in whether or not a vehicle will meet my minimum specs. I will, however, look to where the car is built and take that into consideration. (i.e., I will not purchase a UAW vehicle)

Well, for once I wasn't trying to be highly technical, so of course don't take that description as a technical one. "Rebodied Celica" is technical verbage though, so I should have picked a better phrase.

It's an awful coincidence that it's designed to do the same thing as the Celica, it's the same size and weight, has the same horsepower and about the same torque and curve.

It's not the same car but it's the same market segment.

And for some purposes I'm sure it's quite fun.

Never interested in the Celica.

605 Beckoning,

I wasn't suggesting you copied him - just that the sound was similar.

btw, how did the art sale/showing go?

Oh, sorry, Gnubreed, I didn't mean to suggest that! It's just that with synthesizers, sadly, the range of options has become limited and those same patches get used over and over again. So a LOT of stuff sounds familiar. I kind of thought it sounded a bit like early Vangelis...

As for the art sale, well, I expect to sell nothing. The showing was good, lots of good questions which, amazingly, I could answer. But people have no money, not even a little bit, and if they have money, they buy ammo....which I will be doing too.

Guns and bullets are, in our time, more important than brushes and pigments.

I love this approach. More companies should be doing stuff like this. Of course, exceptions should be made if you are female or a minority or disadvantaged in any way -- Uncle Sam sez so.

No, I haven't gone off the deep end like Prescient with his Tom Cotton nonsense, but still --

Name a better choice right now. He's the only one with both balls left intact at this point. Plus, I'm a bit excited that he put down a serious Israel marker this week. This acorn may be putting some distance from the Ron Paul poisoned fruit tree.

661 Mark Farner actually left GFR for quite a while and established a reputation as a gospel singer. He apparently had a song reach #2 on the gospel charts.

671 About those Goat Balls -> Paging Chem Jeff for ref:
Since Goat Balls (GBz from now on) are not a desirable meal, and the only quality the contain is Testosterone that would be destroyed by stomach acids - rendering the meal a negative nourishment, and a fail of flavor there must be a better way.
Doctors prescribe "Androgel", to be topically applied, as a way to increase Testosterone levels in people with low levels. So that no GBz go to waste, wouldn't it be prudent to puree/liquify the GBz into a paste, then mix in an antiseptic preservative and bio-safe solvent like 190 proof alcohol and then strain the goat meat slop to yield an essence of more purity, that could be applied topically also? I think Lionel Mandrake would approve...
