'Impossible Is Nothing' Aleksey Vayner Dead at 29

He is famous for the worst video resume ever created. (Embedded below the fold.) UBS Financial Services leaked it on the internet. There were many parodies, and he was relentlessly mocked. He deserved it, I guess, but I feel guilty for having mocked him myself. People like that are trying to compensate for terribly low self-esteem. Apparently it was a heart attack from a drug overdose.

Even before he arrived as a freshman at Yale, Vayner had become known for exaggerating his own feats.

At a 2002 event in New Haven for high-school seniors who have been admitted to Yale, Vayner told current students all about his abilities and specialised skills.

He told Jordan Bassm a freshman student at the Ivy League college that he had taught tennis to Jerry Seinfeld and Harrison Ford and that the Dalai Lama had apparently written his college recommendation.

'He talked for, like, six hours straight the first night,' said Bass to the New Yorker magazine after they investigated Vayner in 2006 following his notorious video job application.

'He had a lot of affiliations with élite institutions. He was an action star, an espionage expert, and a professional athlete. He would be on the C.I.A. firing range one day and, the next, at a martial-arts competition that took place in this secret system of tunnels underneath Woodstock, New York.

'Then he was at a skiing competition in Switzerland. He told us the Russian Mafia had him forging passports.'

. . .

Attending Yale despite the attention of the article, Vayner arrived with a CV that now boasted he had begun modelling for the price of $200 an hour, written a book about the Holocaust and founded a charity for troubled children.

He also claimed to have won two tennis matches against Pete Sampras, retired from professional martial arts and mastered the art of 'bone setting'.

According to the article, a friend on Facebook was concerned about his health the night before he died, "Do not, anyone, sell this idiot ANY pills!"

31 I used to know a guy like this. He was normal at one time but once he went away to College something happened. In his first year of med school he would pull chicks by telling them he was a Doctor (this is a major ethical violation, especially for a med student.)

He told them he owned a huge mansion (he rented a room in it, it belonged to a rich friend,) He boasted about all his celebrity friends that did not exist, claimed to ne a multi-millionaire (his parents were blue-collar and he wasn't even close to being a doctor YET.)

Thins is, dude pulled tons and tons of tail. I mean tons. Squirrely little out of shape midget with bad teeth and dude pulled tail like Brad Pitt. Which is why he did this shit.

Once he moved on to full-fledged douchbaggery, stealing his friends' girls, we dropped him from our circle completely.

He's now a real doctor, very successful, and still a douchebag.

I have to confess it absolutely kills me when my 15-year-old jakegirl gets all excited about "getting XX likes" on a FB photo, as if it's some sort of achievement. When she got straight As, I was proud, and told her so. When she made the golf team, I was proud, and told her so.

But yet, teenagers use social media as a primary metric. It saddens me. And even though I enjoy FB once in a while, mostly as a way to taunt my lib friends, I sorta wish it didn't exist.

91 Years ago a friend of mine told me that her boyfriend could do a great resume for me. This was before computer word processors were as sophisticated as they are now with templates and automatic spell checking.

This resume was the biggest pile of BS you ever saw. He would take a trivial thing you'd done and turn it into a major project or accomplishment. If I had gone through an interview with that resume and they'd asked me about these projects I had supposedly organized and run, I would have been a sitting duck. Also the spelling and grammar were awful, it looked like a 10 year old had done it. And this guy was a junior high teacher.

So I took it to a secretarial service to have it redone. The secretary just laughed.

92 74 OSP,

We met him at different points in his life and under different circumstances I am certain. It really shocked me because my dad knew his brother from a construction materials business Dad drive for. I never deigned to inflict that knowledge on Mr. Rose but I can still remember the giant stuffed dog his brother gave me through my dad.

We meet each other at different points in our toils on this mortal coil, and the Chinese believed you never walk through the same river twice.

Hell at some critical mass of population, you will have a chance to run by a genetic perfect match of YOU but it will not be you.

Anyway, my point wasn't to slag Mr. Rose and it may have seemed flip, but my Grandmother rest her soul reminded me that every group can be brought low by the failure of the boss or saved by the brilliance of the janitor so value performance as much as position.

Sorry to be a bother.

If this guy had actually done any cool shit, he'd have quickly learned how poorly people react to being told that you've done any cool shit they haven't done. And if he were a sociopath, he'd have deduced that and styled his presentation differently.

He seems to have been an innocent loon.

Not very long ago, we used to let people go ahead and be loons in peace. Now we gang up and terrorize them into isolation, like ape clans do.

There are times I'm glad I was a misfit, but still well liked to a degree by many. The thing is I knew to value true friends and learned the difference between acquaintenceship and friendship. One of the narcissisms I grant myself from my failed foray into the education world is the "right" to look at classes and consider my eye "semi-stage one trained" on deciphering the group dynamics oof a class.

These poor kids are 24-30 islands, I just don't see the group dynamic that even some of my adversaries in the student body felt for their peers to "learn."

I'll never forget that a kid that broke my nose twice also helped me master base geometry as I aided him in understanding the differences between the Articles of Confederation and Constitution.

Our current generation of boys aged say 6 to 18 are either gonna fold like cheap lawn furniture or be the craziest bastards on Earth and the stuff of legend if we ever point them at an enemy and say "you can do whatever you want he is the bad guy I have been warning you of."

And the company releasing his resume video was dickish...he didn't hurt anyone but himself by sending them that, why humiliate him? I can see why bloggers and companies would want to release embarrassing things about people who hurt harass or threaten them.---I don't agree, but I get it---but this guy was utterly harmless and amusing to them. They could've laughed amongst themselves and been harmless back to him.

Granted, I imagine he would've had a messed up life and maybe died young either way, since the video was just part of a pattern...but still. Ugh, his poor family.

I have a lot of love for the so called "greatest generation". But they left us with a fundamental failing that has plagued society for decades, their kids, which is every generation's greatest responsibility.

174 sven, agree 100%.

I just bristle at these self-proclaimed big swinging' dicks. They're an anathema to my personality type. I worked with a lot of fighter pilots in the Air Force, and the majority of those guys were actually pretty down to earth and kept their accomplishments in perspective.

It would have been dumb back when society tried to be civil.

Now it is probably a resume enhancer not a ding for their side only.

You have to figure the Obamabots are gonna start hiring only Obamabots when able for "magical recovery."

We need to consider adopting minority population survival techniques.

It's like Facebook without the tits and ass mirror pics from 16 year old girls.

Basically, people use it to find other people and where they work. I think it's supposed to help with job searches.

Well the release was probably an unintentional leak. But as for it doing him good or ill, when confronted by a public humiliation it would have been the only thing, if anything could, reach him and get him to grapple with his real self. The fact that it did not is QED in my mind that he was beyond reach, and unless his talents someday measured up to his image of them, he would be doomed to fighting reality and losing to it.

185 I worked with a dick like him.
He had (supposedly) a degree in Philosophy from Yale.
He could easily tell the difference between a $10 bottle of wine and a $100 bottle. Run of the mill audio equipment was all crap unless he owned it.
He could have sat for the bar exam without going to law school.
He called himself a marketing guru. He bs'd his way into a Marketing Director job at another company (at my company, his job was to make icon buttons for the software and make our brochures) and he basically told everyone in the office that we were slugs but if we tried hard enough we could be like him someday. They fired him after 2 months.
The idiot I worked for hired him back and made him my boss because he had gained so much experience and contacts in those 2 months (according to the Marketing Guru).
It was the most soul crushing, life draining, miserable time in my career.

186 > I keep getting invites to liked in. I come across the Douchiest people. WTF is it and why is it there?

LinkedIn is a career connections deal. Kind of like FB but for staying in touch with people you've worked with/for/customers/etc. I've found it pretty helpful for finding new opportunities when switching jobs, and for finding people I know who work at prospective employers either to get me an in or to give me an honest ground floor view of what it's like to be an employee there.

Like I said, first time I've ever seen anything remotely political on there, and hopefully it's the only time.

I did unconnect from that dingbat though. Was just a person I know in my department at a previous job.

197 "The Greatest Generation"? My dad was in WWII, I think he would be ashamed of all the BS about their service.

The Greatest Generation? How about the survivors of The War Between the States. Especially Southern men. Their entire economy was destroyed, their land was occupied and they had no capital to rebuild with. Southerns had invested over a trillion dollars in the slave market. That all disappeared, while the North kept their factories and immigrant wage slaves humming.

It took fifty years for the South to begin to rebuild. All the rail road lines were destroyed, all the factories were destroyed and much of their homes were burned to the ground.

I would say those guys were a pretty "Great Generation" just to have survived, both Black and White.

203 184, yeah its true that it was probably unintended. But I don't know that public humiliation is the only thing that could've reached him and got him to change...he was so young, he might have been able to get schooled in a less public way, get some therapy and social skills training, and just grow past it. And I dont know that he didn't try to grapple with his issues after the whole thing, he may well have gotten therapy and such, and still failed. How do you even know what to do in such a situation? Drug addicts have a system for getting sober and showing other people that they've changed, and whole corners of medicine...I wonder if people like him have specialists or something? Does the severe lack of social skills put him somewhere on the autism spectrum?

I'm probably thinking too much about it but it's sad and kind of interesting.

I wouldn't worry about having mocked. The guy, as some are wont to be, was, a story teller. If he was that, and thought the world or even himself, could live with that without some... embarrassments... Well, don't worry about it. If something got to him it was probably himself, as he realized... he was a puff of smoke with a good (if horribly overdone and delivered) story. We are all, even the truly elite, just puffs of smoke, actually. It's learning to live with it.

Breaking news
The Democrat Permanent Supermajority and New Voter Act of 2013.

Reports indicate that Republicans and Democrats have finally reached a deal
on immigration reform. This bipartisan deal reached between such notables as
McCain and Schumer is a remarkable step forward. The impasse over
immigration was broken when Marco Rubio offered the bipartisan compromise of
allowing all illegal immigrants immideate voter registration. This
compromise was brought about when Democrats offered Republicans a
"sweetener", letting them all kill themselves via Hari Kuri. "this is a huge
deal!" Sen McCain is quoted as saying. "We were arguing over what method of
suicide we would be allowed, pill, hanging, shotgun, and the divides were
huge. But when the Democrats mentioned they would allow republicans to
commit Japanes Hari Kuri, all argument stopped." this bill entitled "The
Democrat Permanent Supermajority and New Voter Act of 2013" will be
submitted to the Senate this february. Mitch McConnell said this bill would
be submitted anytime now, in exchange for being able to work a 5 hour work day,
and assures conservatives that this allowance will make the Democrats pay a
huge price down the road. "we are legalizing 15 million illegal immigrants during a time of record unemployment,
who will they blame when they realize House Republcans and Democrats are
only working 5 hour work days? Also, I need sleep, can't you see I need to
spend more time with my family?". President Obama hailed this deal as a bipartisan step in the right direction. "it is great to hear that Republicans have heeded my advice to start ignoring the voters of this country......oh wait let me take that back my teleprompter malfunctioned, ignoring Rush Limbaugh, the tea party, I don't know what insert demonized social group  means, but I am glad Republicans have started to ignore them, and listen to mainstream American media members...I mean mainstream Americans. Haha, sorry I must have gotten some water on my teleprompter during my Hawaiin vacation".

The timetable for this bill could come quickly, as both parties agree
a budget and other matters such as 16 trillion dollars in national
debt are matters the public cares about more, and such their time
frame for moving on bullsh$t is short following a succesfull election.
