Death Of A Conspiracy Theory

... I wish. I guess now the Sandy Hook truthers will just say this guy's in on the plot.

Lt. J. Paul Vance, the face of an ongoing Connecticut State Police investigation into worst grade-school shooting in U.S. history, Thursday debunked media and Internet reports that Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza killed his victims with handguns and not the Bushmaster XM-15 E2S rifle that is now the focus of a proposed federal assault-weapons ban.

All 26 of Lanza's victims were shot with the .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle, said Vance, who bristled at claims to the contrary during an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.

Update: A good point in the comments - we must apply the Clinton Doctrine in cases like these, so ...

What Difference Does It Make?

5 This isn't that surprising.

While kooks on the internet should annoy all of us, I am a little annoyed that Lt Vance doesn't point the finger at the correct reason for the misunderstanding.

Media rushed to report details on this tragedy in the most sensationalist manner possible. Because their focus as an industry is not on truth, but on speed and excitement, honest folks trying to understand what happened got information that was 100% wrong.

And that is a very consistent feature of crisis reporting.

That's where the real problem is.

It's just as much a tragedy if these kids had been slaughtered with a handgun or a rifle. A rifle is a very unusual way to do this, so that is newsworthy, but I don't understand how it's very relevant moving forward.

24 Females may be included in the Selective Service and qualify for a potential draft should one be ordered by the president, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said.
The U.S. military’s civilian leader lamented that he didn’t know who ran the Selective Service, but whoever does will “have to exercise some judgment based on what we just did,” Panetta said at a Pentagon press conference Thursday.
On Thursday, Panetta and Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lifted the official ban on women serving in combat roles, removing gender barriers from jobs in the military.
Congress established the U.S. Selective Service as an independent federal agency in 1940, one year ahead of the start of World War II. Presidents had drafted men in previous wars, but this was the first time it was established in peace time. In America’s history, the military has never drafted a woman or ordered her to register for the Selective Service.

That could change as the service leaders determine how to institute the new policy of allowing women to serve in combat arms specialties. In doing so, it may force Congress or the president to include women or scrap the Selective Service, analysts said.

You're right in the fact that the evil nutcase could have used any kind of firearm to kill 20 little kids. Mag capacity, barrel length, action type, etc. mean less than nothing when it's your sick goal to slaughter a classroom of trapped, panicked, and defenseless six year olds. Less. Than. Nothing. I contend he could have done the same damage with a machete, the Rwandan weapon of choice.

The fact that he used an AR isn't relevant to anyone who understands the above and isn't interested in lying about it to check a box on their agenda. But to those who have the ultimate goal of disarming the American people, the fact he and others used a weapon that they had already cast as a Bad Thing is a golden opportunity.

The left's goal is as evil and destuctive as the one the nutcase in CT had.

But if the initial reporting is not close to correct and the real facts that come out a week later happen to line up as the best case scenario for gun grabbers to parade a bunch of little coffins around how many people just treat the correction as spin or worse?

77 United States v. Miller 1939.
Miller possessed a sawed-off shotgun
banned under the National Firearms Act. He argued that he had a right to
bear the weapon under the Second Amendment, but the Supreme Court ruled
against him. Why? At the time, sawed-off shotguns were not being used
in a military application, and the Supremes ruled that since it didn’t,
it was not protected. Even though Miller lost that argument, the Miller
case set the precedent that protected firearms have a military, and thus
a legitimate and protected Militia use. The military now uses shotguns
regularly, but not very short, sawed-off shotguns, but an AR-15/AK-47
type weapon is currently in use by the military, therefore it is a
protected weapon for the Unorganized Militia, which includes just about
every American citizen now that both age and sex discrimination are
illegal. (The original Militia included men of age 17-45) Therefore any
firearm that is applicable to military use is clearly protected under
Article II, and that includes all those nasty-looking semi-automatic
black rifles, including full 30 round magazines.

85 Two things to note on the referenced article: (1) it uses the term "assault rifle" which even Slate admitted applies only to automatic weapons, not the Bushmaster. (2) nowhere in the article is the word "autopsy" or any other indications of actual evidence -- just that Lt. Whatshisname says it was the Bushmaster.

That is not "debunking"; it is refuting. Debunking implies that physical evidence was presented.

However, they reasoning isn't as faulty as some suggest.

There starting point is, "the media can not be trusted at all, to such a degree that they very substance of their reporting is suspect."

1) media silence is indicative of a conspiracy moreso than reporting
2) on major events widely reported, the substance is still trustworthy

For what it's worth, I recall seeing (During the Clinton era discussion on the "Assault Weapons Ban") the NRA staging a demonstration in which they matched a person with a 17 round clip against a person with a six round clip.

They both started firing a series of rounds at a target. The person with the six round clip was only missing one round every seventh shot to the person that was firing continuously. It was a very graphic demonstration that the difference in clip size is utterly trivial to the end result.

The guy could reload that six round clip in the time it took the other guy to fire one round. Something like 3/4ths of a second.

This point is not addressed nearly enough. People used to be institutionalized for being crazy. In the last few months I have read that the move to de-institutionalize people began with the book "One Flew over the Cuckoos nest" which highlighted abuses of the mentally ill.

As a result of the Public outcry, the Kennedy Administration (of course) started efforts to DE-instuttionalize people. Eventually a court decision said that you CAN'T institutionalize people UNLESS you can prove they are a threat to themselves or others. (like that is easy to prove before the fact.)

152 (Yes, I know the 9mm has a greater standard capacity mag, but roll with me here in context of the proposed 10-round mag limit).

Why roll? He was a fucking loonie. He KILLED his mother to get the guns. Why do you expect he would abide by a 10 rd limit?

Even IF, by some STRANGE reason he did abide by this mythical 10 round limit, semi autos are shipped from the factory with TWO magazines per gun. So, 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40.
With all of the above, killing his mother, stealing her guns, and killing children, you think he wouldn't carry the extra magazines, that makes this excersise pointless.

Do you aspire to stupid? I mean, that's a pretty lofty goal for a retarded semi-sentient like yourself. Are you sure you can reach it?

What you want us to accept "for the purposes of argument" is that someone willing to kill children will otherwise not break the law AND ALSO will not follow the law in such a way that he still has plenty of ammunition to carry out his goal of slaughtering as many kids as possible.

So, let's say you ban anything other than handguns and bolt or lever action rifles. Now some psycho comes along and wants to kill as many people as possible.

If he's methodical and plans it out well in advance, he'll have ample opportunity to get an illegal weapon- so your ban is nothing more than a farce. If he's not methodical and doing it because of some near-term cause (psychotic break, rage crime, whatever) he'll still use multiple magazines.

One thing and one thing only stops these people, and it's a show of force. Sometimes they try to fight and wind up dying or wounded. Sometimes they simply surrender. Sometimes they commit suicide. But in all cases, the proximate cause of the end of the encounter is a show of force.

Sometimes that show of force is one or two people (see Hassan, Goat F*cker Traitor), sometimes it's overwhelming force (see this skidmark). In either case, it's force.

And what you want to do is make it more difficult to make that show of force.

Why do you want children to die?

On the topic of Sandy Hook...

It only took 10 weeks to get a basic fact straight about what gun was used, something that should have been available within 24 hours.

Now, in the midst of proposed legislation to make sure this never happens again, we don't have a clue as to what this guy was doing at that elementary school, why he picked that particular class or any other information as to motive.

Why wouldn't this come out? We're not going to interfere with a prosecution.

It's about the easiest and cheapest defensive handgun skill to master as well. You don't even need to burn ammo at the range to get it down cold.

Practice in your home with an empty gun and empty mags or spend a few dollars on dummy rounds. n short order, you'll have the fresh mag on the way to the magwell before the empty one the floor.

1. A crazed social outcast took advantage of sub par security at a public school and murdered some innocent children and teachers.
2. The MFM completely botched the coverage of everything since, to the point where weeks later nobody is really sure of many of the pertinent facts.
3. We are now supposed to accept the spokesperson for State LE as definitive fact without the vetting of a trusted, objective impartial source.
4. All of the usual Statist opportunists push their way to the front, and in the latest attempt to not let an opportunity for civil rights ratcheting go to waste, demagogue for all law abiding citizens that had nothing to do with this, feel responsible and over react by relinquishing their Constitutional Rights.

I believe that too, but my actual point was that the psycho coward would not have conceived of an attack where he would encounter possible resistance.

He choose to gun down helpless children in a gun free zone. We was choosing the easiest target he could find. The gun free zone provoked this danger, to some extent. Weakness can be provocative, and the possibility of danger is a powerful deterrent.

That's why mass shootings are usually in gun free zones.

Banning ARs... obviously not an effective response. But requiring that gun free zones be actively secured or no longer gun free zones... that makes a lot of sense to me.

A rush of adrenalin into the system makes complex motor movements--as well as elaborate reasoning or analytical function--difficult. Vision narrows and blurs and loading a magazine and sighting a handgun (or anything) becomes problematic. The way to counter these effects is byfrequent, basic, repetitivetraining to reinforce muscle memory and reaction, making response to conflict situations a munen muso 'no mind' event.

FBI Agent Jelly Bryce, arguably the greatest combat handgunner who ever lived, would practice his presentation daily in front of a full-length mirror for hours on end. His goal, he said, was to beat his own reflection. Bryce was featured in Life magazine and clocked at 4-tenths of a second from draw to fire, and he never missed. Although the FBI hasn't released the action reports and other records, Bryce killed an estimated 21 bad guys in stand-up gunfights. He was the go-to guy for handling desperate hardcases.

216 204: The Miller Supreme Court decision was worse than a lying prosecutor situation: the question of whether a sawed off shotgun could be a militia weapon was never briefed or argued to the court. Counsel for Miller had actually died in the time between oral argument and release of the decision. It was a wild reach by the Court to save the 1934 National Firearms Act, not based on history, legal precedent, or much of anything else. Not unlike the Obamacare decision in being a politically expedient effort to save an unconstitutional law....

217 One can also note that both the National Firearms Act and Obamacare use the taxing power of the Federal government, or rather they dress up unconstitutional licenses and penalties as "taxes."

218 73 nice work media. everything we were told was wrong and i mean everything except that kids were dead.

How do you know kids are dead? Have you seen a photoghraph of even one shell casing on the ground, or even one drop of blood?

What's the "conspiracy theory" that "some" believe?

That Sandy Hook happened? Or that it didn't?

Still waiting for one photograph of one lone teddy-bear or shoe or bloody handprint on the wall at the school.

....and....

....waiting.....

And I should be "punched in the face" for not believing everything the TV tells me.

That's what I keep hearing about this.

That emotion should always trump fact.

And we HAVE NO GODDAMNED FACTS.

219 We have more "evidence", if you want to call it that, that SEAL Team Six took out OBL and tossed him in the Indian Ocean, which is to say: ONE PHOTO.

220 It's not helping that the media are still reporting contradictory info. Just a couple of days ago, MSNBC did a story, sourced to law enforcement, that says he used only pistols. Now law enforcement story saying this.
