Happy Friday!

Today is the annual March for Life. The media can only minimize our numbers if we let them. Be sure to mention the march to your family and friends and on Twitter and other social media.

Chairman Priebus had things to say about regenerating the GOP brand.

Jonah Goldberg on Sec. Clinton's testimony: "she outfoxed most of the Republicans with ease."

Gov. Jindal says the GOP doesn't need to change its values, just "everything else we are doing."

Microsoft must have missed that memo about the death of the PC. The software giant posted record quarterly revenue.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, January 25, 2013. On this day in 1890 muckraking reporter Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane) completed her around the world trip in 72 days. She was working for the New York World at that time. And yes her life sounds remarkably like Maggie Dubois (Natalie Wood) from the 1965 movie (The Great Race). AND there is a LOT out there today so lets get to it.

2 Har Har, another one bites the dust. After being released from GITMO back to the Saudis this shit for brains went back to the terror trail and he got to eat a missile and has just died. It would have been much cheaper and safer for the world if Bush had lined every one of these SOBs up and had them shot after that shit-stain of a SCOTUS ruling. And especially after our weaselshit President was elected.

4 Senate Republicans fold on filibuster deal and get a bag of ju-ju beans in the “compromise”.

In return, the majority party -- Democrats today -- would have to allow two minority amendments on bills, a response to Republican complaints that Democrats often prevent them from offering any amendments at all.

I suppose this means “allow them to vote” on two minority amendments which will be promptly thrown out. So now we have lost the filibuster and gained not a damn thing. Fox says it reduces the number of times they may use a filibuster but does not eliminate it. That is not explained at all. But one thing to look for now, a flood of liberal judges to be appointed by Obama in the coming months. We are truly screwed, blued, and tattooed.

And this is the headline that The Hill uses:

77 Hello again, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. And thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic.

In my book, The Director’s Cut (always a great gift, hint, hint), the narrator, Toby Swanson, is a makeup artist to the silent screen star Theda Bara. The two of them have a very close, nearly romantic relationship, having each other as both friend and confidante.

I based the character of Toby very loosely on Allan “Whitey” Snyder, Marilyn Monroe’s personal makeup artist. Whitey met Monroe at her first screen test in 1946 and continued to work with her for the rest of her life. They were never lovers – Snyder was, in fact, one of the few men Monroe didn’t try to seduce – but they shared a close working relationship and, if any man could be considered a friend of Monroe, it was Snyder.

Always insecure and morbid when it came to her beauty, Monroe once asked Snyder if – should she die before him – he would do her funeral makeup. “Only if the body’s still warm,” Snyder joked, trying to gloss over the unpleasant subject, but Marilyn pressed him over and over until he finally agreed. Over the following years, she reminded him of his promise, once sending him a solid gold money clip with Dear Whitey – the body’s still warm! engraved on it.

Of course, Marilyn did die before Whitey. On August 6, 1962, the day after her body was found, Snyder got a call from Joe DiMaggio. “Whitey, you promised,” Joe choked. “You promised. Can you make her look just like she used to?”

Snyder made his way to the Westwood Village Mortuary, to find Monroe’s corpse lying on a table. Gingerly, he stepped forward and took her hand, admitting later that if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have been able to do the job. After a few moments, he unpacked his kit and settled down to work. Beginning with a rouge known as “Twentieth Century base,” Whitey prepared Marilyn’s face, remarking later that, once he’d begun work, he settled in to his old routine, and that it was almost as if Marilyn were simply sleeping.

As he applied the final touch-up, he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was DiMaggio. Neither man spoke, and Whitey quickly packed up, leaving his chair to Joltin’ Joe. The next morning, when the makeup artist returned for a final check, he saw DiMaggio in the same chair, still in the same clothes from the day before, his face haggard and his eyes red. He had kept vigil at Marilyn’s side all night.

Whitey still had one last duty to perform. Joe asked him to be a pallbearer, joining hairdresser Sidney Guilaroff as one of the only two Hollywood friends DiMaggio allowed to escort Marilyn to her final resting place.

And that’s it for today. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

78 This is what I said about the RNC meetup yesterday.

The RNC is meeting in Charlotte to battle out differences between the
amnestybots and “Moderates” and the few remaining Republicans who say
the problem is message and we need to stick to principles. We need to
keep track of this because it is an early indication of the direction
they will be going in 2016. I don’t have much hope for the base in this
one.

Unfortunately some of us actually have to work for our livings and have neither the time, the inclination or the logistical ability to engage in a protest, especially on a work day. Cocoons are not merely for caterpillars.

- "Chairman Priebus had things to say about regenerating the GOP brand."

That's like saying Dennis Kozlowski or Ken Lay had things to say about corporate governance and management.

Preibus & Co. staggeringly were inept, as was the Romney campaign. The myopic focus on Wisconsin. The ORCA fiasco. The advertising dollars fiasco. The horrible internal polling. The complete insouciance to the effect the Obama attack machine was having on the white vote. Boggles the mind.

- "Gov. Jindal says the GOP doesn't need to change its values, just 'everything else we are doing.'"

Yeah. The GOP also needs a new voter and especially a new primary voter base. One that's not irrational. One that can see past single issues and pet peeves. One that doesn't need a puppet show to understand that most of a loaf of bread is better than starving to death.

I answered that person (on a political board) that I didn't know what "Republicans" think of guns, gays and God anymore than I know what "Democrats" all think of them being as I'm a registered Democrat who has voted Republican since 2008. The GOP is 100% focused on playing the hopscotch to power DC game rather than serving the states that sent them there. They do not understand that in every GOP heavy state I have ever lived in the reason they are sent to DC is to protect the business community of the state from DC.

Since they don't even understand what the fuck we think their job is, they are just democrats speaking freedom now.

Washington, D.C.'s Metro mass-transit system on Thursday proposed a $26 billion expansion through 2040 to help drive economic growth in the U.S. capital and its suburbs. The proposal presented to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's board includes a second tunnel under the Potomac River and a new rail tunnel in the center of the District of Columbia.

The new plan does not outline how to fund the upgrade. The proposal comes as federal spending on mass transit reaches $10.6 billion this year, almost double the 2000 figure, according to data from American Public Transportation Association.

127 Hey, Captain Hate, I have figured out why people didn't like Romney. It's the same reason they didn't like Bob Dole.

Your average voter, whether Homer Simpson or Marge, looks at both men as measures by which they are found wanting. With Dole it was his service to his country and war injury (mocked by the left, of course). With Romney it was his financial success and solid family.

People are not fond of being reminded that they are failures, or even mediocre.. One reason Bush was popular for so long was because he instinctively knew this. This is why he often mocked himself concerning his grades, or his speech patterns, or his taste in movies or music.

America wants someone as a leader who can do the job while at the same time doesn't want to feel like the leader is superior to them. It's a weird way of thinking but very American.

Obama has done a reverse of this. He TELLS people they are failures but holds out the carrot that says "It's not your fault. It's those evil rich people/religious/GOP types who are keeping you down." Voters think, "At last, someone who knows how things really are!"

That 47% Romney talked about are still there. The trick wil be to get a candidate who doesn't inspire the same level of dislike among that group.

As far as Perry, all he needs to say is that he screwed up in the debates and will be ready next time. And then BE ready. Also, we need debates hosted by our people and not the media.

One ad, one stinking ad, that I fully expected which could have been a game changer would have been a screen with employment figures and the trillion dollar "stimulus"followed by a video of King Putt saying that "...jobs were not as shovel ready as we thought."

Re: The Senater Republicans fold on the fillibuster:

In return, the majority party — Democrats today — would have to allow two minority amendments on bills,

The changes were broken into two pieces and approved by votes of 78-16 and 86-9. In both roll calls, Republican opponents were joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who usually sides with Democrats. Many of the GOP "no" votes came from tea party-backed senators like Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah; Rand Paul, R-Ky.; and Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

As was pointed out yesterday somewhere, the two amendments will almost certainly be from the minority leader and committee ranking member, so the few conservatives in the Senate are about to get frozen out.

154 :::As for Canada, they have zero gun rights in Canada and no free speech guarantees whatsoever. Their 'conservatives' are still left of the GOP. Their taxes are higher. ::::

That is a gross oversimplification.

Canadians have more gun rights than residents of NYC, Chicago or San Francisco, for example. You can buy handguns, shotguns, rifles, even Scary Black Rifles. You're not getting more than a 5-round detachable magazine, though. There is no concealed carry allowed. On the other hand, national long gun registry was tried and the gun owning citizens refused to comply. Now it's gone. Guess what Dianne Feinstein just introduced in the Senate?

As far as the restrictions on free speech, there has been tremendous pushback against the abuses of these so-called Human Rights Commissions, which operate at the provincial level. Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant have won some HUGE battles in breaking their influence, and the trend is towards MORE free speech, not less.

You can't make the mistake of thinking of Canadians like leftist Americans. They were never Americans. Their history and societal development followed a completely different track.

Yes, taxes are higher here. For now. And yet, even with all the entitlement spending Canada does, they're not saddled with a soul-crushing 16 trillion dollar debt. Balanced budgets are achievable here. And the average Canadian's earnings now handily outstrip the average Americans, even with the higher taxes. On top of that, the US dollar has lost 10% of its value vs the loonie in just the last two years.

I love America. But it's got severe structural problems that will take generations to recover from. I'm no longer willing to reflexively assume that just because I'm American, every one else has it worse. They don't, necessarily.

So since the idea for allocating electors by congressional district was first started by DEMOCRATS in Maine in the late 60's, they have no room to complain.

I went back and looked at that. The "by district" one wasn't the one I was opposed to. The one I was opposed to was the one that Democrats were pushing in CA. That one was that all electors were obligated to vote for the winner of the "popular vote"

No trees doesn't bother me. I'm from Texas and spend a fair amount of time in west Texas (as opposed to West, Texas, which is in the east). Trees largely happen to other people.

What would bother me about Canada (any part thereof) is the weather. I think the weather is like a grade: anything less than 70 is failing.

Get up there in a debate and just call them frauds and crooks. Ask them why they give more sympathy to jihadists than to middle class Americans. Ask Cuomo when he's gonna make an honest woman out of Sandra Lee and marry her. Tell Hillary she couldn't manage the State department so how could she manage the entire government.

197 I was thinking about the apparent ConBlog re-awakening to the fact that the media is the enemy as brought up, I guess, first by Insty then others then here, and I think its all wrong-headed.

Insty thinks we need to find some billionaires to buy a channel or program or whatever and thats just stoopit. Its one of line of things that Insty sometimes comes up with that really do no good. He's great at spotting trends, not so hot at solutions.

Look, a rule of thumb in life as well as marketing and everything else is that its easier to destroy than create. Conservatives in general reach for creating something because they are producers and because they look down on the destructive capacities of the left in general. But reality is reality, so use it.

You can destroy the credibility of media in the same fashion as the left does with anything that isn't their preferred outlet, but we are often too respectful of differences and respectful of time and place to do so. Anytime somebody brings up, say, Chris Matthews reply that you don't watch trash TV. Go on a rant about how lower class he is. How he appeals to the lowest common denominator. Compare how he drools to that of a retard wearing a helmet and infer that he adopted that trait to appeal to his audience. Smirk, laugh, sneer, roll your eyes, the lot. Say it loud and proud. Then ask what they wanted to say.

Buying a station is a creative enterprise. So is designing a website and gaining cred for that site to be able to pick on a media target. You're not going to get there in time, friends.

Anyway, big meeting to go to. Sorry I won't be able to respond to anything.

Canada is like Massachusetts without concealed carry.

And the fact that they are pushing back against free speech abuse now does not mean you will have it in twenty years. America at least has a written Rubicon.

Plus, if America does go belly-up, Canada is going to take a nosedive as well. 84% of what it produces goes here.

Plus, like most other European nations, our defense spending allows them to spend more on entitlements.

When the money stops pouring in, they're in the same boat - big entitlements and not enough cash to pay for it.

I think that's the hard part of having a special needs kid - the realization that she's never going to get to do the things other parts take for granted.

But being the parent means you make the hard call, and that means walking a daily line between letting them develop to their full potential...while not letting your own preferences blind you to physical risk.

250 If smoking were still allowed in the Capitol, one could easily imagine her removing a cigarette from a gold case and tapping it nonchalantly on the witness table, and the entire Democratic caucus leaping over their desks for the chance to light it for her.

251 Oh and EoJ - I know you owned a small business, here's a fun fact-

In Canada if someone has a kid, they get up to a year of time off.

Either parent, with the year split between them.

The government will pay 60% of their salary, but you will need to hold their job for them while they are out.

The company I work for has a Canadian branch. This is a real project nuker.

Plus they have a much more European view on vacation and working.

This. Too many want to surrender all or part of our country to the fascists. You'll never getan Article V convention andif by chance youdid, the fascists wouldpervert or ignore theproduct of a convention just as they ignore the Constitution now.

There's nowhere run, the DOOM will circle the globe and destroy everything, so it's fight or surrender and for me I chose to fight. I swore an oath and I will fulfill it or die trying.

As far as Canada's economy, they're not stupid. They're already shifting towards other markets. Take a look at South America, Brazil in particular. That's where the next economic powerhouse is coming from. Commodity based economies will find a way to survive. That Keystone pipeline? It's going to be built. But it's going to be going west, not south.

Place your bets.

I swore an oath as well and my oath was to the founding not the flag, not the soil, and most assuredly not a man. The Revolution can only be defended if we concentrate people of a like mind and show it works. You want to know what "save it all" looks like?

It looks like New York state and California.

It's a nice bet to make since you're not actually going to follow up in 4 years. FWIW it's the first time I've ever said this. I was in ABO camp, luckily I don't have to do that again.

262 I know all about the Labor Ministry regs on maternity leave - our company is mostly women.

It's still an at-will arrangement, which is more than I can say for some states. And like I said, massive entitlement spending here, yet no crushing debt.

America already has an insurmountable debt, and the real spending hasn't even kicked in yet!

The crash will indeed hurt everyone. But nowhere as bad as at home.

264 From a teacher in the Nashville area - -

"We are worried about 'the cow' when it is all about the 'Ice Cream. 'The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching 3rd grade. The last Presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.

I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches.

Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best.

Everyone applauded and he sat down. Now is was Olivia's turn to speak. Her speech was concise.

She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down.

The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. But no one pursued that question. They took her at her word. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it...She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream...

Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide. Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 51.4 % of the people reacted like nine year old's.

They want ice cream. The other 48.6% percent know they're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess."

THAT MY FRIEND, IS HOW OBAMA GOT ELECTED... BY THOSE WHO WANT EVERYTHING FOR FREE!

Then I dismiss your second-degree anecdote with mine. And yours isn't even a first hand one. I have never heard about this Mexican/Cuban crap.He was very well received in the news when he came to New Mexico for the senate race last year. Great local coverage.

266 Oh, really? How hard was that to cross in Kelo v. New London? Or in the Obamacare ruling, where you can now be taxed for breathing?

Let's bear in mind Canada has a full single-payer system right now.

And Brazil's GDP is a tenth of ours and doesn't border Canada.

America and Canada have advantages in trading with each other - I know in our experience we have far less market penetration overseas than in Canada.

They can surely 'survive', but I suspect they will need to make hard choices about entitlement spending to do so.

Pre-surrender wins nothing and the idea that the fascists will leave you alone if you feed them someone else is absurd. Chamberlain proved the folly of that idea.

You will fulfill your oathto the Constitutionby fighting for the whole country or you can surrender all of it to the traitors. It's the only choice the fascists will give you.

Microsoft must have missed that memo about the death of the PC.

No, they got the memo. If you disagree, then please to be explaining Windows 8's everything is a tablet or phone metaphor?

And don't say it has a desktop interface: it does, but they're redoing the whole metaphor and I still don't see any upside to it.

Other than the Windows App store.

274 One of the firearms on feinsteins ban list is the Hi Point carbine. This inexpensive but very reliable carbine was designed specifically to comply with the first AWB. I have seen these propped up in the corner of a few country stores in west NY state, giving the store owner a means of defense without going through the hoops of NY draconian handgun laws. Of course, NY passed the 7 round limit and these hold a devastating nobody needs it 10 rounds. Hint to NY owners: load 7 in the magazine, ascertain where the bottom of the follower is, and place a dimple with a punch on both sides of the mag. Or, just fuckem.
