Report: California Power Costs to Go Up by 33%

Candyland.

California has been a leader in renewable energy production, in part due to federal and state level policies that provide incentives for producers of renewable power. However, a new report found that California’s energy policies will raise state power rates and associated costs by nearly 33 percent.

Eh, good. Irresponsibility flows from a lack of connection between action and consequence. The rickety structure we call the Modern Liberal Welfare/Nanny State is built on a foundation of obscuring this connection from the populace.

Anything that connects the action to the consequence is good for politics and good, generally, for the lost art of human thinking.

thanks to @jtlol.

There's a showdown brewing...

If a state is denied it's share of Federal tax dollars...for things like Roads and Medicaid...then, I think it's only a matter of time before that state says:
"No more Federal Taxes will be collected here. We will keep them and take care of our own."

The best energy sources are coal, oil, shale oil, shale gas, and natural gas.

These hydrocarbon sources are high in power density and the by-products, carbon dioxide and water, are great for the environment.

The "clean energy" you speak of is junk.

Cleaner how exactly? Less CO2? Anyway whatever global ills you fear from your boogey man global warming, the catastrophic results of expensive energy will dwarf them 100 fold.

Mass exinctions, starvation, widespread poverty, environmental damage without check or measure. Inexpensive energy is one of a handful of things that keeps this planet from falling into fuckitall catastrophe.

120 The Brits seem to be having the same problem in seeing the correlation between shutting down coal-fired electric plants and increased costs of power and heat generation. The wind turbines can't produce the power as cheaply as coal and now a lot of Brits are having to choose between heat and food.

GE makes those prop-swinging wind generators...which is old technology in the world of wind generation.

There are newer designs, using a Helix shape...that can take wind from any direction, and don't self-destruct from prop vibration.
The helix designs don't chew up birds, either.

But nooo...let's keep throwing money into maintenance-intensive old technology.

and the media his the impact with their bias, and our asshole GOP was so afraid of "RRRRAAAACCCCIIIISSSSTTT!" that they refused to look in the camera and say 'your healtcare fine doesn't care if you are from Mars this is ad policy coming they are trying to force you to ask for a Federal takeover."

"hey Solyndra matters twofold not only has he wasted billions but don't look now killing coal with no back up means there is not enough power and you will be paying more to get more brownouts....doesn't matter if you are democrat, Republican, or from Mount Olympus...but HIS power will be on..."

MUMR I used your nic and wrote the shit he should have been saying....

Our Federal government is the enemy of the American people's striving for a better life.

That is NOT hyperbole it is fact.

184 178 Mike the Moose,

That's all true and imagine how the power companies feel?

In the 80s the goddamned granola gurus demanded higher cleanliness standards for coal thinking they'd never get 'em well guess what they got 'em....

so now it was "not good enough GLOBAL WARMING!"

This is all a game to them and I'm tired of playing.

187 There are newer designs, using a Helix shape...that can take wind from any direction, and don't self-destruct from prop vibration. The helix designs don't chew up birds, either. But nooo...let's keep throwing money into maintenance-intensive old technology.

If this is the company you're thinking of, it looks like it crashed and burned like many other "green", "renewable", and "sustainable" (LOL!) energy companies.

190 "Leaving for Colorado in 1 month! Escape from CA!"

From what I hear from conservative Coloradans, you may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Unfortunately, it seems that nowhere is safe, thanks to:

-- The illegal alien tidal wave; they are getting to be everywhere, and these days are voting illegally too

and

-- Idiot Commiefornians moving elsewhere because CA is broken, and then immediately voting in their new location for the same policies and philosophies that broke CA in the first place

It really is frustrating.

192 191 Conservative Monster,

Yeah and thank God most states lack the damned ballot initiative.

Posted by: sven10077 at January 24, 2013 08:02 PM (LRFds)

193 Well, those are two different drainage basins so one doesn't really affect the other. Since mercury is found naturally, it's not possible to say just where it came from, but scientific consensus is the coal plants to the south. Atmospheric mercury tests support this conclusion. However, you're absolutely right that mercury (and arsenic, for that matter) from mine seeps is a major problem. Residents were recently warned not to let our dogs swim in the river because low flows have elevated the arsenic content to dangerous levels. Environmental groups in the area close a lot of portals every summer, but it's an uphill battle. There's an ongoing debate about the Feds declaring the area north and west of Silverton a Superfund site and doing a more comprehensive job.

194 "From what I hear from conservative Coloradans, you may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire."

Our GOP has temporary personnel problems, but Colorado is a centrist state, for the most part.

I love consensus. It's the only way shutdown industrial activity that left a high concentration of pollutants in the area can be exonerated in favor of persecuting power plants 100's (to thousands) of miles away. Don't worry Jordan. You've won. And you'll get everything you've voted for.

208 Oh, but ABC GNUS said just today that the reason Californicate is in GOOD SHAPE financially is that its fine citizens voted for the tax increase in Prop. 30! [seriously, they did; I practically plotzed]

Now if all you rednecks would just get in line and bend over like good little subjects [they strongly implied], the WHOLE COUNTRY can be in good shape!!!

209 My electric bill is almost double from a year ago, so this raise should be fun! A friend of mine finally got solar last year b/c their electric bills with air con in a 2500 sq ft home were over $600 per month in the summer.

And it doesn't do any good to conserve, b/c then they say, oops, got to raise rates, we're losing profits! In CA they are guaranteed a certain percentage in profit. What a deal! And we have a surcharge already on each bill to help pay for power for the s-called poor (Dem clients)!

But Grampa Moonbeam says all is well so it's all good.

Posted by: pj at January 25, 2013 01:11 AM (ZWaLo)

210 I am stuck in CA for now...and at our staff meeting today we were told by a fellow employee who deals with stuff like this that my employer (a large, state-funded agency that shall remain unnamed for now) has been forced to spend millions and will spend millions more to continue to operate the same power plants they have operated for decades previously under the inane cap and trade idiocy.

Any he admitted that my employer does not even know where this money will go to...

Meanwhile, we get no raises again this year, our health care costs go up, and more layoffs are looming.

I felt like screaming in front of everyone present as I know that most of them vote Democratic each and every time, and when we had the chance to suspend crap and trade a few years back, I'm quite certain that most of them did not vote to do so...

So now we have the consequences...

Posted by: Jon at January 25, 2013 02:13 AM (ujtfN)

211 My guess as to what will happen:

The wealthy leftist that are leading CA over the cliff won't care about electricity rates. Either they regard the extra money leaving their pockets as a noble sacrifice to Gaia, or they're to rich to even notice.

The sacred poor won't notice, because they aren't paying their electric bills anyway.

Who will notice are the middle class people who pay their bills and aren't wealthy. They're being driven into poverty by these idiotic policies- or at least out of CA.

Leftist politicians have no reason to care, because those people tend not to vote left anyway. So essentially they get to build their green paradise on the backs of their political opponents.

Neat trick, huh? There's no signal anywhere in this chain of events to tell them that they're fucking up so they see no reason to stop.

Their problem is that reality doesn't go away, and eventually they won't be able to keep the lights on, despite the wonderful news stories about the saintly windmills and the wonderful cap-n-trade scheme. There just won't be enough money available to put into the system to keep it going. Too many people won't be able to pay $1000 a month or more, so they won't. They'll buy a generator and have electricity only when they absolutely need it, like in other third world countries. There won't be enough welfare money available to pay the bills for the swarming masses of poor people, so they're screwed too. The rich will be bled even more, but I suspect even wealthy leftists have limits.

So the CA clowns are just sealing their own doom. Eventually even the moronic GOP will be able to win elections- but the solutions will be so obvious even the GOP won't be able to screw it up.

Whee! I love being an optimist!!
