40 Boehner, not funny. Boehner knows he's not competent to the House Speaker responsibilities. Pulling the "blame Obama" card for annihilating the Republican Party is LAME considering the blame for party corruption into whatever irrelevance within the whole national electoral game rests within the Republican Leadership. As if Obama annihilated the compliant anything-to-keep-in-power Boehner. pfft. As if Obama selected the recent Republican National Leadership for ballot. As if Obama decreed that the Republican Party rules are null and void at the last GOP Convention. yada yada yada -- whining bitches who wouldn't stop Obama with Obama's own bio the year "unprecedented" early campaign before the 2008 potus campaign traditionally began. -- whining bitches who refuse to impeach Obama, no matter how grievously he destroys the US Constitutional Government since 2008 taking office. To hell with Constitutional Government, when Boehner's career is at stake, or when the relevance of the Republican Party is no longer. So far as Republican Leadership's concerned, it's not about the Constitution. It's all about THEM and perpetuating their opportunistic corrupt careers, in or out of office.

If Boehner were decent, he'd be campaigning for a strong Constitutionalist Republican House Speaker to take his place now. Fat chance in hell.

Your morning metaphor:

Prius is top-selling new car in California — and only here

In the rest of the United States, the best selling new vehicle is the Ford F-series pickup truck. But in 2012, more Californians bought a Toyota Prius than any other new car, truck or van. Nationally, the Prius is not in the top ten of sales for 2012.

According to the California New Car Dealers Association, Prius models were registered 60,688 times last year. These are sales to ordinary consumers — not including fleet sales, government agencies or rental car companies.

132 Women prefer the AR-15 because of its accuracy, ease of use, and aesthetics?

Grrl what are you on? If we are talking the pure beauty of lines and form, the Beretta CX-4 Storm carbine in black or blue plastic looks like it stepped off the set of the new Battlestar Galactica. In fact it was used in that series by the Colonials.

Ease of use the Storm also beats the AR-15.
1. Got this big side mounted cocking handle to yank on to chamber a round. As opposed to that dinky charging handle on the AR-15 that more often than not fails to properly seat the round. So there you go using the right thumb to press the Forward Assist to get a round in chamber on the AR-15.
2. Safety? On the Storm its a big oval push button just above the trigger while on the AR-15 using your right thumb again to click a three position selector.
3. Now you bring the weapon to your shoulder. The CG on the AR-15 shifts forward because of several reasons. Biggest though happens to be that 30rd magazine and bolt which are placed before the trigger that makes the gun front heavy. In the Storm because of its bull-pup design, the magazine goes into the pistol grip just like its handgun counterpart and the bolt is similarly located. So most of the weight is supported by your trigger hand as opposed to the AR-15 where its your other hand on the foregrip supporting the weight.

Perhaps I should do a blog post on this. If I had a blog like AllenG.

Can't remember where I read it, if it was indeed overtly stated, but the implication is clear. And circumstantial evidence such as the purchase of millions of rounds of ammo by non-military federal agencies, treatment of the Fort Hood massacre and its perpetrator, the West Point thing a few days ago and especially the report about some Pentagon egg head preparing a battle scenario for civil unrest and the military's response to it all seem to indicate that some sort of insurrection/civil disorder is being at least prepared for if not expected by the regime.

If said any of this 4-5 years ago, you'd think I was wearing a tinfoil hat. But the actions of SCOAMF and the left since that time means that thinking this is not out of the realm of possibility any more.

Yeah it is how they infected the force with political correctness to the degree they have and why Stan the Man was so bulletproof.

Congress definitely plays games with the power no doubt.

JCS is not 100% guaranteed to be able to get to the bottom of things or know at once, but I am willing to bet if Congress asked JCS can give a reasonably accurate assessment quick.

No need to get a spoon and start digging a foxhole, but it may be time for the right to be as wary of the military as the insane left was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s as a matter of good civics anyway.

If the wars are ending and we're to have cuts, let's have real cuts and denude the force of any nefarious potential here at home.

They want peacenik, great let's give it to 'em.

There are NO women at Boot Camp MCRD San Diego. The ONLY women's Battalion is at MCRD Parris Island

Posted by: Nevergiveup at January 23, 2013 07:40 PM (jE38p)

I don't know what to tell you. He told me it was boot camp, because I specifically remember him saying that the Drill Instructor was bemused that my nephew had more seniority than did he. (My nephew spent six years in the Navy as a Nuclear power plant operator assigned to an attack sub. He didn't like the way the Navy operated, so he got out. A year or so later he decided he wanted to be a Marine.)

He also said there were women in his boot camp, and that they couldn't keep up with what the males were expected to do. Now you tell me that there were no women at Camp Pendleton, but I am telling you he said their was.

Now my nephew retired from the marines several years ago, so I would guess the time he was in boot camp would have been somewhere around the late eighties- early nineties. Perhaps there are no women in Camp Pendleton NOW, but when he left for his first leave, he told me there were.

Lost cause.

The courts are long gone.

That's what most non-lawyers don't understand: There is no chance for any turnabout here. Why? Because of the nature of the law.

Stare decisis.

Conservative judges will always follow liberal precedent. Because they believe this bullshit about integrity of the law and rule of law. Liberal judges have no such illusions.

You think the one-way ratchet of the advancement of the liberal state is bad? It's ten times worse in the legal field.

Like the political arena, we need to stop looking for the players already on the field to suddenly stop doing what they have been doing for the last 50 years.

No. We have to take the field.

The Founders gave us the tools in law just as they did in politics.

But: It's a dirty phrase, a very dirty phrase in the established legal community. And I suspect I could get in serious trouble just for even writing something that contemplates it.

I hate those stories about the expense of raising a child. It deters too many couples in the normal childbearing years (too many quality couples, not breeders). They are NOT the same thing. Women were NEVER at MCRD San Diego. The one and only Women's Marine Recruit Battalion is the 4th Battalion at Parris Island SC and it has always been that way. And I doubt very much your Nephew had more seniority ( what ever that means) than the DI. He was probably making reference to women Marines who have already completed Boot Camp in SC who are at Camp Pendleton for additional training in what ever their Military specialty was going to be and was your nephew after Boot Camp.

212 Sean. There is one key that holds the upper and lower parts in place. Push that large triangular key all the way out and then you pull the upper and lower apart. They will slide until the grooves disengage. Then you have two pieces and the key. To remove the bolt, you slide the cocking handle back until it becomes loose in the circular cutout. Pull cocking handle out. You can now remove the whole bolt assembly.

You have now taken the Storm apart for cleaning. Re-assembly is the reverse.

Here in my county (northern VA outside DC) we had a local property tax initiative under our "smart growth" regime elected in 1999 that taxed hybrids at $1.00, and the DC Metro area opened up HOV lanes to single-occupancy hybrids (boggles the mind, doesn't it?), in order to encourage people to save the planet. In reality it just gave another break to the "me and not thee" progs who live 60 miles from their K Street or Capitol Hill jobs on a "farm" (VA is a right to farm state, so get your kid a goat for 4H and keep it in a pen on your 5 acre lot with 6000K sqaure foot house said 60 mi from your job, and bam! you get a land use exemption because you're a "farmer"), and bitch about everybody else in their "sprawl" houses that mess up their long commute from the rural policy area. They had to rescind the tax break (with much moaning and groaning from the few, the proud, the progs) when enough people bought hybrids within a few years that the incentive was determined to have worked, and personal property taxes had tanked enough.

223 lets try again:
Be no better friend, no worse enemy.
It’s fun to shoot some people.
The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.
Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.
The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event.
Fight with a happy heart.
If in order to kill the enemy you have to kill an innocent, don't take theshot.

Don't create more enemies than you take out by some immoral act.
It's very hard to live with yourself if you don't stick with your moralcode.
If you have high expectations, if you can win the affection of your young sailors or Marines, they will win all the battles for you.
Just get on with it, put in the miles and the weight-training and the study.
Some platoons are worth as much as a company, because of the social energy of their leaders.
There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. It's really great.
I don't lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.
I don't believe in demonizing the enemy. I don't patronize them either.
There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don't think you do. It's just business.
I spent 30 years getting ready for that decision that took 30 seconds.
I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I¹m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I'll kill you all.

He is a real moron's moron. In the best sense

224 Those in the know, General Officers, are political animals first. In today's political environment (after four years of TFG) I'm not sure if any of them are worthy of the uniform.

There are a few. Admittedly fewer than there were when I was a Company-grade, but they exist.

Lesson One as a Cadet was, "Always, always be prepared to resign your commission over an ethical principle. If you can't, then don't put on the uniform."

I admit that's an increasingly minority view in the officer corps, but I actually don't think it is at the LT and CPT level.

231 120. Nevergiveup

Truman was gifted his opportunity to ax MacArthur after the General went public with his logical approach to the Korean Conflict -- that we didn't belong there, but if we were forced there, to bomb a no-man's-land rather than the meat grinding hand to hand conflict Truman glutted. Bear in mind, Truman appointed MacArthur to lead the Korean Conflict, but wouldn't listen to logistics. It wasn't as if MacArthur had no place presenting his plan; simply that MacArthur played with PR fire when attempting to out maneuver the POTUS via the media. Truman was wrong on all counts with Korea. Eisenhower campaigned for POTUS on the platform to get the US out of the United Nation's War against North Korea. Eisenhower won, and actually kept his campaign promises. Had MacArthur played Eisenhower's game rubbing political elbows? But he didn't. Regardless, unless there's treason, a military coup, a great President does not assassinate his best generals, Patton and MacArthur. Even FDR utilized them both, despite personality and protocol conflicts.

Presidential CinC protocol involves appointments and orders, of course. But since a President can make his own selections, there's no reason to "excommunicate" from the ranks unless treason. Despite his glaring young career faults, though a pompous fool, MacArthur was no traitor. A re-assignment from Truman was not what Truman chose. Truman's over-reaction was his glaring fault, a predictable weakness, leaving no poker face in international diplomacy for the US while he stayed in office and created/managed the Cold War, Truman's Legacy.

Re: Obama and our Generals, McChrystal is a good case in point. Obama appointed him and removed him despite McChrystal's dedication, because of a perceived slight from grunts towards the clusterfuck of the Military's illogical "purpose" including insane Rules of Engagement -- led by the CinC. Removing McChrystal hardly improved Pres.Obama's situation as CinC in our perpetual wars spreading throughout Africa, the Near East, and Far East now permeating our entire globe, our own continent.

257 As opposed to that dinky charging handle on the AR-15 that more often than not fails to properly seat the round. So there you go using the right thumb to press the Forward Assist to get a round in chamber on the AR-15.

My first AR in '88 was Colt. Triangular handguard, full stock, not forward assist. Never had an out of battery experience.
Newest version? Bushmaster M4gery. With forward assist. Personal preference? I don't use the f assist. If the round won't seat on it's own, I want it out of there. I don't want the extractor ripping off the bottom of the case and leaving a broken round stuck in the chamber due to a swollen/expanded/jammed in round.
YMMV.

368 341. anna, it isn't as if any organization created by humans in order to preserve a divine experience won't have innate flaws. There's nothing wrong with exercising faith in the power of Love and enlightenment while doing one's best in life as one sees purpose, whether you're Pope Benedict the XVI, Anna Puma, or James Carrol. Casting judgement to discredit an entire message because we see a flaw in the messenger, well, so much for ears to hear.

370 I really don't understand the transgender thing, Unless you were born with an indeterminate gender which needs to be corrected through surgery. I have known men who have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in order be mutilated so that they could become women and then live with another woman. Wouldn't it just be better to get some therapy so that you can give yourself permission to not be boxed into stereotypes of what the world says what a man is and what a woman is, and live your life with the sex organs you were both with and with someone who accepts you the way you are emotionally and physically?

And as far as deciding a kid is transgender-the heck with that. It's usually unbalanced parents who have an agenda to push. One example is two lesbian parents deciding their boy would be happier being a girl and giving him druge to delay puberty, Crazy

Most Americans respond positively to the stricter gun control measures Barack Obama
proposed last week in the wake of the tragic shootings in Newtown,
Conn. - but by less of a margin than such measures receive outside the
context of partisan politics.

Fifty-three percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll view Obama's

The Catholic Church begs to differ, and so do thousands of Catholic and non-Catholic historians since 100 A.D.

I think you're going to lose me if you argue that the council at Jerusalem was the founding of the Catholic church. Bishops as the Catholic Church understands them did not even exist, let alone a church hierarchy. Neither before nor after that council.

Both of those are kind of essential for the things that set the RC church apart from, say, the Baptists or Methodists.

Nicea I'll probably grant you, because while the RC church was not the "only" one to come out of that, you could definitely see the "seeds" of it by then.

Saying the Catholic Church was founded by the council of Nicea is like saying the US was founded at Roanoke Island in 1584.

I had forgotten about theFourth Crusade, so I guess the Hagia Sophia was Roman Catholic for awhile.
The current church was built by Justinian, after the collapse of the western Empire, so I feel justified in calling it an Orthodox church - by that time the Latin-speaking West and the Greek-speaking East had already startied to move on sperate trajectories, although the split proper did not happen until 1054 (and really wasn't finalized until later).
Incidentally, the use of the term kath' holou by Justin Martyr does not indicate the existence of the Roman Catholic church as we understand the term today, just as the use of the term "orthodox" by early writers doesn't indicate the existence of the Eastern Orthodox church as a separate organization.

The Catholic church was founded by Peter. End of story.

So the Orthodox/Coptic Christians are all heretics?

The Catholic Church can claim whatever they want to claim, of course, but the hierarchy did not exist until much later than 49 AD. And you kind of have to have the hierarchy to have most of the bits that make the Catholic Church the Catholic Church.

To some degree, historically the founding of the Catholic Church (as such) is much better placed sometime at least in the 2nd century, and possibly the 3rd or 4th.

Again, I'll grant you Nicea, but claiming Jerusalem is akin to saying the US was founded in Roanoke in the 16th century. Certainly that was part of the chain of events that lead to the US being founded, but it was not the foundation of the US.

Honestly, it's more like France claiming it was founded by Charlemagne. Certainly Charlemagne ruled over what is now called France, but he also ruled over much of the European continent. France has no more claim to Charlemagne than does Germany or Spain.

Similarly, the RC Church has no more claim to the council at Jerusalem (which didn't by the way, change it from a Jewish sect to a gentile religion- it merely began including gentiles. There were still deep divisions between the two groups as late as the AD 60s (and probably longer than that)), than does my own Church of Christ, or the Methodists, or the Greeks, or the Copts.

450 #414 While I joined, as a late-in-life convert.

My attitude is that the Church has survived longer than any other human institution, despite attacks from all sides, despite the Borgia Popes, despite the papal captivity in Avignon, despite 2 World Wars. It was founded by Christ by Peter, whose bones are buried under the Vatican and you can actually visit the site. In my opinion, the only reason it has survived is that Christ protects the Church, even with her horrible faults.

Despite the weenie cafeteria Catholics and the self-excommunicated Catholics who often are the loudest voices, I chose to follow a faith which I believe to be true. Yes, I know there are bad priests and liberal nuns. That has been true throughout history.

I hope you will come back.

456 I'm not sure. I've not seen a lot of actual *reporting* on the story.
Most recent factual-sounding internet rumors I've seen are that he used
pistols and the Bushmaster in the school and the thing in the trunk was a
shotgun.

It doesn't matter what weapon he ultimately used. The big question is how he got a hold of them.

I think he brute forced his way to them somehow. Here's my theory:

1. Several days before he snapped, he tried to buy a weapon at a local Dick's Sporting Goods. He was denied because he refused to wait for the 1 week background check period.

2. Nancy Lanza quit working and pulled him out of public school to take care of Adam because of his condition. She was also described as a "prepper" who was diligent in her planning. It seems to follow that a person like that would not carelessly leave weapons and ammo around for a mentally unstable person to have easy access to. There has been no official word yet on how Nancy Lanza stored her weapons.

3. Nancy Lanza was Adam's first victim. She was shot and killed in her bed. Somehow, Adam got a hold of a weapon without raising suspicion or alarm from Nancy. This seems to contradict #2.

How did Adam get a hold of a weapon? Did Nancy really leave them unsecured in a completely open environment with ammo? If so, then she violated several state laws and the partial blame for Sandy Hook falls on her. Until the police release the official report describing the Lanza home, I can't say for certain what happened.

459 Your opinion. I don't have time do give you 4 semesters of history, 2 of ecclesiology and 3 of patristics in a comment box.

Now you're just arguing like a Lib-Tard. You're better than that.

The Roman Catholic Church- as such- requires the hierarchy of the Bishops (Peter was supposedly the Bishop of Rome, remember? That requires Bishops. For him to have control over what the other churches were doing requires a hierarchy, even if its a loose one).

Yet we have no evidence (other than the Catholics' own assertion) that Peter exerted any such hierarchical control. Indeed, we have plenty of evidence in the Bible itself that different churches: worshiped differently, had different ministerial foci, and did not accept the Apostles' word as law on its own merits (they were praised for checking the Apostles' teaching against the Law and the Prophets).

So everything that makes the RC Church the RC Church didn't exist at least as late as the AD 60s (some time after the book of Acts, which recounts the council at Jerusalem, was published), and (based on John's writings which came later) probably not until even later than that.

But CNN and NBC both initially reported that it was left in the car. At this point, it's still a bit fuzzy.

Rubio said well if they are interested in solving the problem and not just playing politics to score points, they'll listen but we will find out.

That's the problem. We like these serious guys and their serious proposals. But the voters at large don't care about serious stuff. Rubio doesn't understand that the President is unserious, that isn't the game he is playing.

He's going to get faced. And played. And we'll get an amnesty deal that has Rubio's name on it even though he isn't for amnesty.

471 I think it's fair to call Hagia Sophia an Orthodox church and not a Catholic one for this reason: the guy who paid to get it built and the guys who kept it up were the Emperors.

The real difference between the mediaeval Catholics and the Byzantines is that the popes could hire and fire kings; in the east, the kings hired and fired patriarchs. For instance before the schism made it all official, the eastern Emperors kidnapped at least two western Popes, Vigilius and Martin.

Doctrinally the east and west were the same up to 1054 (so they all claimed, give or take iconoclasm or monothelitism etc).

But organisationally they were entirely different. Hagia Sophia was more an Imperial concern than a Christian concern, which makes it Byzantine, which makes it not independent and Catholic.

I may when the lad is raised, the wife is baptist I am "Catholic" but we agreed early on in our courtship we'd raise the boy in a unified faith for the family. My wife's Catechism was briefed in in such a way I told her "no."

Whether by strict doctrine or not my son is a bastard because he was born in a marriage by a judge I did not think my marital status was proper "hello."

There is more to my leaving than just a temper tantrum over that, but that was probably the straw.

I call myself lapsed instead of "asshole lapsed" because I don't preach against the faith, or even the Church I am bothered by some of the behaviors being tolerated.

I'll die a Catholic God willing, after the lad is raised.

The problem when trying to figure out when the Roman Catholic Church began is there was no single founding point - as I indicated above, the Latin Church and the Greek Church began to drift in different directions after the collapse of Imperial authority, but the final split (there were actually several schisms that were knitted up again prior to the 1054 Schism) and even then there was hope for generations after that the schism would eventually be healed. The First Council of Chalcedon in the fifth century was the last ecumenical council held in which the whole Church came together to resolve a theological dispute, so I would argue that the split has to have come after that point.

511 I don't argue with people about when the RC church was founded. I think it's a device of the devil to pit denominations against each other.. If w're all lifting up Jesus Christ as Lord and endeavoring through the power of the Holy Spirit to constantly submit ourselves to God and be transformed into the image as Christ as far as possible in this life-that's what matters. I sure as heck have more in common with any other Christian of good will than militant atheists who would like to see the entire church universal burn and crumble and who believe faux messiah Obama is as Newsweek said "The Second Coming."

One last comment though....

At the Council of Jerusalem, the other bishops (yes, there were bishops then) deferred to Peter on the point of Gentile exemption from Jewish dietary laws and circumcision because he was the one Christ charged with building the Church.

To me....that's hierarchical control. If it wasn't, then no reason to defer to Peter, right? There is also a long, long, historical record of other bishops asking Rome's opinion on doctrinal matters from at least 49 A.D. on.

The real difference between the mediaeval Catholics and the Byzantines is that the popes could hire and fire kings; in the east, the kings hired and fired patriarchs. For instance before the schism made it all official, the eastern Emperors kidnapped at least two western Popes, Vigilius and Martin

More or less true, with some caveats: First, the power of the Byzantine Emperors was greatly weakened after the Iconoclastic Controversy in the eighth century, and the failure of iconoclasm demonstrates that imperial power was limited.
Second, the Pope was also often installed by kings, which was considered quite legitimate up until the 11th century and the beginnings of the Papal Reform Movement, in which the Papcy began to assert its ruling authority over the whole church and eventually also declared its supremacy over secular authority (which it saw as essentially independent but subordinate). Prior to this the western church had been run by councils of bishops with the papacy occupying a rather ceremonial "headship" with virtually no imput into doctrine or policy. It was only when the Carolingians tried to use the papacy to bolster its claim to the throne after Pepin's usurpation of the throne that the church started paying much attention to Rome (apart from the English, who had a special connection due to the circumstances of their conversion), and even then it was more as a model to be followed for liturgy rather than a source of doctrine or management.

1) Yes, but the word "bishop" just means "shepherd." In the early church, the term was use interchangeably with the term "elder" and... a couple others I can't recall off the top of my head.

2) They didn't defer to Peter, but to James. Acts 15.

3) We could quibble about the term "deferred" at all, really, but I won't, because it would be mere quibbling.

553 In my estimation it is becoming clear with the messaging that the main goal of the antis this time around is registration tied into the expanded background checks (closing the so called loopholes). The NYT link above on Machin is already positioning the drones to see that as the "best" they could have got... and there have been other indicators almost from the start. Which makes sense because gunshow loophole/registration has been a top goal for a number of years now when the heat has gotten turned up.

They will throw some super scary bills out, the Dems in redder states will put up a heroic fight against it for 2014 and in the end this will be the "compromise" acceptable to all -- not that they won't take anything else that they can get to stick. If you do not believe that the ultimate goal is confiscation (and the media will reinforce that only paranoids think such things) this will likely seem reasonable to most folk including a lot of fudds.

560 Murphy, whose former House district includes Newtown, contends that a tougher assault weapons ban will save lives. He said the revised ban that’s being introduced Thursday will be difficult for manufacturers to skirt and would ban the type of AR-15 rifle used by the shooter in Newtown.

“If this bill had been in effect, there would be little girls and boys still alive today in Newtown,” said Murphy, adding how the only inconvenience to sportsmen would be reloading more frequently at shooting ranges because of the smaller magazines.

“This bill is the bread and butter of gun reform,” Murphy said. “If you get military rifles and high-capacity clips off the streets, there are going to be less people killed in mass shootings going forward. It’s as simple as that.”

Blumenthal said the bill defines rapid fire assault weapons in terms of a single feature, such as having a pistol grip or a flash suppressor. Connecticut’s ban defines the weapons in terms of having two features.

Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.

Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test;
Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test; and
Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans.
Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.
Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment;
Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes; and

Dianne Feinstein in a big octagon with a nerf ball gun.

8 people, one on each wall of the octagon with a nice big basket of regulation baseballs.

They continuously bean her until she asks for an AR-15 or is dead. If she asks for the gun, it will drop down from the ceiling in 15 seconds. The 8 have a chance to run away.

I'd watch.

600 Allowing women to serve in combat roles will strengthen the U.S. military’s ability to win wars, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday, shortly before his official announcement of the landmark change.

“Our military is more capable, and our force is more powerful, when we use all of the great diverse strengths of the American people,” Panetta said at a Pentagon ceremony in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Every person in today’s military has made a solemn commitment to fight and, if necessary, to die, for our nation’s defense,” he said. “We owe it to them to allow them to pursue every avenue of military service for which they are fully prepared and qualified.

No we don't owe them that! Bullshit. We owe the Country and the Military the best fighting force there is. The MIlitary is NO Democracy. What a jack ass

608 #593 Virtually all the "growth" in our GDP since 2009 has been the result of the federal government spending trillions of borrowed dollars. It's "real" growth, all right, but it isn't sustainable or increasable. The liberals are right that cutting this spending will reduce GDP in the short term, but instead of seeing that as an indictment of the current liberal economic policy, the liberal media just use it to beat deficit hawks over the head.

It would be, except that idea of the Catholic Bishop is somewhat removed from the New Testament idea of the bishops/shepherds/over-seers.

From the NT, we know that the whole Church did defer to the Apostles (though, again, they were praised for "testing" what the Apostles said). But each church had its own bishops/elders (and, yes: that's plural. many elders to one church/congregation). That's not exactly the same as current RC model.

633 Bannion 422.

Just as Alexander built his new Egyptian capital Alexandria, located in order to face the open world, as dissolution of the Roman Empire raged, Constantine determined the need for his new capital to the East, building Constantinople or Nova Roma at Byzantine. But to say that the Western Roman Christians constructed and worshiped the Eastern Orthodox Basilica to Sophia (Wisdom) subsequent to the basilica to Irene (Peace) is about as dumb as it gets. And to declare out of habit and you own historical tradition that the Western Christians were more perfect, correct or legitimate than the Eastern Christians is bigotry. http://tinyurl.com/a4adsaw

Regardless of century or millenia, it is one thing to be educated in the Western Christian traditions, and quite another to be of the Eastern Christianity. As far as who came first, the chicken or the egg, consider well that prior to Saul/Paul of Tarsus, since Jesus' resurrection, Christ sent his original disciples/apostles abroad; and the Eastern Christian converts "originality" is every bit as legitimate as those Christians converted from Western regions.

When people get stuck on stupid, then those with eyes to see, let them see, and with ears to hear, let them hear. If indeed there is unity in the Holy Spirit, then get off the high horse and recall the Beatitudes and the significance Jesus stressed to be the last seated, to be the least amongst you. The first shall be last, and the last shall be first. No?

I always admired and appreciated Pope John Paul II's ecumenical outreach to unify the Christians around the world, specifically to renew a unity in the Holy Spirit with the Eastern Church. I can't imagine him arguing with any of the Eastern Patriarch's that the Roman congregations occurred first, and therefore will be the only credible servants of Jesus Christ. Actually, I recall he stated the legitimacy of the Eastern Churches guarding the Lord's flocks. I'd have to go back and reread his books again to find and specify the quote.

Where the different global regions differ on theology, learn more about other religions and Christian sects before declaring your own monopoly on truth. If truth sets us free, then there is no reason to fear learning what others believe or know to be true. What each of us makes of what we learn is of our own choice. The sampler read, "What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God." Jesus taught us to love all, God, self and "neighbors", and to pray for our enemies. That is Christian doctrine, regardless of region. Interestingly, Buddhists also share the "compassion" for others, and the appreciation of the sanctity of life, and the light within each person which must be recognized from within in order to shine outward as enlightenment. Who is to care which particular sect invented the idea of compassion, but rather, people came to want it and practice it. In the sharing, compassion grows.

Now, that's part of theology. And the only things we really know are things we've experienced. So grow some compassionate knowledge through epiphany or your own divine experience with God, "as we forgive those who have transgressed against us". Don't stay damning the world to hell for not seeing through your eyes unless you want to be judged in like manner, for not seeing things through the eyes of others, including your enemies.

THAT is why there must be no state religion, no specified state church, and why such is stipulated by our Christian founders in our US Constitution. And by Christian, yes, they were their own kind.

btw, the criticism against Constantine is for being the opportunist amassing earthly power for himself. He was not a saint for the sake of being the "least among us" sharing God's love, compassion and forgiveness with humanity. He had no problem slaughtering Christians who wouldn't politically or theologically be subservient to his own dictatorship. He required that all people abandon their own experiences with the divine, to deny their own faith and knowledge, or be killed. Many who chose death are the martyrs and saints, who would not forsake their personal relationship with Jesus and/or with God, who would not burn their holy scriptures in order to erase their own history.

I picked up Zoey Oldenbourg's book on the Crusades at a book sale a while back. Do you, or anybody, know if that's any good or should I leave it unread?

It has been over a decade since I read it. It is not bad, but a bit dated. IIRC, it predates Riley-Smith's study of charters back in the '70s that did so much to debunk the "younger sons looking for land" theory about the First Crusade and argued that religious beliefs and ideology, not material gain, was the primary motivation for the early crusaders. So, she is going to be a bit more cynical about the crusaders' motivations than is perhaps warranted. Also her comments on the "Song of Roland" and violence in European secular society demonstrates a bit of academic silliness - she seems to be appalled that Roland is so fond of his sword, and that it is the blade and not the hilt that he values most.
Overall, not bad, but you probably want to read either Madden or Riley-Smith as well.

656 I just call it "The Church" and let it go at that. Again, the RC Church (as currently constituted) didn't exist then. Really, that was so "proto-church" that you can't really point to it as "belonging" or "founding" any specific denomination or tradition. It's simply "The Church."

675 How can you tell if you're not a leader?

From an article in this morning's Forbes:

1. You don’t get results: Real leaders perform – they get the job done – they consistently exceed expectations. No results = no leadership – it’s just that simple.

2. You get results the wrong way: If the only way you can solve the deficit described in point #1 above is through chicanery or skullduggery you’re not a leader. The ends don’t justify the means. If you abuse your influence, don’t treat people well, or confuse manipulation with leadership, you may win a few battles, but you’ll lose the war. Optics over ethics never ends well, and being a jerk doesn’t make you a leader.

3. You don’t care: Indifference is a characteristic not well suited to leadership. You simply cannot be a leader if you don’t care about those you lead. The real test of any leader is whether or not those they lead are better off for being led by them.

4. You’re chasing a position and not a higher purpose: If you value self-interest above service beyond self you simply don’t understand the concept of leadership. Leadership is about caring about something beyond yourself, and leading others to a better place – even if it means you take a back seat, or end up with no seat at all. Power often comes with leadership, but it’s not what drives real leaders.

5. You care more about making promises than keeping them: Leadership isn’t about your rhetoric; it’s about your actions. Leadership might begin with vision casting, but it’s delivering the vision that will ultimately determine your success as a leader.

6. You put people in boxes: Stop telling people why they can’t do something and show them how they can. Leaders don’t put people in boxes, it’s their obligation to free them from boxes. True leadership is about helping people reach places they didn’t know they could go.

7. You follow the rules instead of breaking them: Status quo is the great enemy of leadership. Leadership is nothing if not understanding the need for change, and then possessing the ability to deliver it.

8. You churn talent instead of retain it: Real leadership serves as a talent magnet – not a talent repellent. If you can’t acquire talent, can’t develop talent, or can’t retain talent you are not a leader.

9. You take credit instead of giving it: True leadership isn’t found seeking the spotlight, but seeking to shine the spotlight on others. The best leaders only use “I” when accepting responsibility for failures. Likewise, they are quick to use “we” when referring to successes.

10. You care about process more than people: But for the people there is no platform. Without the people you have nothing to lead. When you place things above the people you lead you have failed as a leader.

This reminds me of someone I've seen in the news lately but for the life of me I can't remember who.

681 Regardless of century or millenia, it is one thing to be educated in the Western Christian traditions, and quite another to be of the Eastern Christianity.

Agree completely, you can see it in the liturgy among other places. The East was far more philosophical and mystical. The West was more practical. That's partly the residue of the respective cultures. Check out Robert Wilken's book The Early Christians As the Romans Saw Them and his newest on the first 1,000 years of Church history.

If indeed there is unity in the Holy Spirit, then get off the high horse and recall the Beatitudes and the significance Jesus stressed to be the last seated, to be the least amongst you. The first shall be last, and the last shall be first. No?

I think you think that I value the Eastern Church less. I do not. Much of it is actually in communion with Rome.

He did not, and would not, and has not. And Benedict is as much the Pope of Christian unity as JPII was.

Where the different global regions differ on theology, learn more about other religions and Christian sects before declaring your own monopoly on truth.

You have made a totally unwarranted assumption there. Of course, comment boxes make that problem worse.

If truth sets us free, then there is no reason to fear learning what others believe or know to be true. What each of us makes of what we learn is of our own choice.

Exactly. I haven't said otherwise. God is the author of all truth, therefore I'm not really too worried about the details. It sounds like you're assuming that because I think someone is incorrect, that I value the, less as a person. That would be incorrect

Don't stay damning the world to hell for not seeing through your eyes unless you want to be judged in like manner, for not seeing things through the eyes of others, including your enemies.

Again, another completely unwarranted assumption, but I appreciate the spirit of gentle correction in which it is delivered.

THAT is why there must be no state religion, no specified state church, and why such is stipulated by our Christian founders in our US Constitution. And by Christian, yes, they were their own kind.

And I have not argued otherwise.

682 That Beretta Storm is as beautiful as the Hi-Point carbine is ugly but,

The Beretta uses high capacity pistol magazines. The Hi-Point carbine uses single stack 10 round mags.

I have a Hi-Point carbine in 9mm. It's a bit crude with a spongy trigger, but has been reliable. Not a tack driver, but you wouldn't expect it to be.

I've shot a buddy's Beretta; it's better but I'm not sure it's twice the price better.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at January 24, 2013 12:06 PM (SY2Kh)

683 422-Nice post.

That's why I think it's unhelpful to argue about much of doctrinal differences and history. If, for instance believes that the Eucharist is really the body and blood of Jesus Christ and another thinks in the Lord's Supper Christ is REALLY present, not not as a memorial (but not in transubtaniation) what what matters IMO is what results having the Eucharist or Lord's Supper does towards love of God and neighbor. Same thing with Church history. It can be interesting to talk about it. The problem is when conversations-as they often do with impassioned people-come down to acrimonious debates about "my" church being better than "your" church. It's all God's church and as far as the truth-for Christians-Christ is the way the truth and life. I can't claim to be a perfect Christian by amy means, but I am going onto to perfection-as in being perfected in Christian love only by the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ wants us all to be unified-which is never going to happen under the banner of ONE specific church in this lifetime. Therefore, it would be better for it happen in our love for our brothers and sisters in Chris and love extended to others, submission to God, bearing with trials, accepting the cross-not losing our hope.

I can't imagine him arguing with any of the Eastern Patriarch's that the Roman congregations occurred first, and therefore will be the only credible servants of Jesus Christ. Actually, I recall he stated the legitimacy of the Eastern Churches guarding the Lord's flocks.
___
John Paul II also mended fences with the Jewish community, he formed a close bond with chief Rabbi of Rome, and he visited the Holy Land to apologize for Catholic sins against Jews.

The Eastern Churches claim direct apostolic succession, I don't see why any Roman Catholic would consider them illegitimate. No one involved in this discussion has done so, as far as I can see. I've attended Mass at a Maronite church, there is something sublime and holy about hearing the Liturgy celebrated in the same language spoken by Our Lord.
