ONT Humpday: All The Cake And Berries You Can Eat, Darlings

And not a single calorie will follow you home from the intertube. Pinky swear.

Sorry that Maet cannot host again this evening. I lost won the coin-toss, so it will be another poor quality substitute-host-post for you swine beloved sweetlings.

Sorry.
Speaking of substitutions, anybody remember this?

So sweet.

Man, low-carb is easy to maintain, but hard to get started again once you fall off the wagon. I would motorboat the lemons right off that luscious pile of sugar right now if I had the chance.

Debunking booze myths.

So, a guy in Aussie sprayed a spider with some cleaning solution to kill it, and this happened.

You ever really need a good dose of sauna therapy, but don't really want to pay for it?

Trader Joe's finally bows to inflationary pressure. New name for Two Buck Chuck needed.

Shocking and racist. Do not click. DON'T. It's pretty bad.

This video is rather profound, in that it cleverly symbolizes two useless fatass cats in a frying pan washing each others' faces for seventeen goddamn hours.

This has been your Sucky Substitute Overnight Thread, darling hearts. Enjoy. Please tip an Ewok if the spirit moves you.

I will leave you now with this visual representation of Socialism's historic track record of creating wealthy, prosperous nations.

I thought a doorknob could beat Obama too. What kind of scares me about 2012 was that Romney was THE moderate every supposed moderate says they want. You couldn't get more middle of the road, non-ideological, pragmatic Republican. And still he was demonized as Hitler by the MSM and the unwashed masses believed it. If Romney couldn't win, I don't know if any non-Democrat can win anymore. So if Biden can somehow win the DNC nomination, he can very easily win the election.

112 Shortened version of Obama joke I heard since I'm typing it.

Obama goes to cash a check at the local bank.
Teller: do you have ID sir
O: didn't think I'd need it I'm the President of the USA.
T: Sorry but if you cant prove who you are govt regs will not allow me to cash this check. But Tiger Woods came in without ID pulled out a putter and putted a ball from one end of the lobby to the farthest corner into a cup and that was proof enough.
O: I have no clue how I can prove it's me!
T: Would you like that in tens or twenties.

The failing of Republican strategists is to think they understand moderates and can get them to vote for the GOP by moderating policy and appearing polite.

You can't bribe moderates. You can't convince moderates. But you can scare them, and you can guilt them.

This is what Democrats do - they tell moderates that a vote for the GOP is a vote against vaginas, and you should be ashamed of yourself for using incandescent light bulbs/drinking soda/going to church/having a gun.

Primarily concerned with economics and strict constitutionalism. Was once coequal with the "sex and drugs" wing, but now AFAICT it's subordinate, largely because of that 2000-2001 rush (post-Gore civil rightists and anti-war factions).

Libertarianism, like everything else, is more of a coalition than anything else.

The LP did its typical about-face from bashing Clinton to bashing Bush, but I warned that they weren't going to switch back this time, and they haven't.

Cool. They also have plans for building a 12-pound Mountain howitzer and tips for hunting whitetail with one.
"Since it would be rather difficult to hit a deer
with a Mountain Howitzer Cannon that used a single 12 pound cast iron ball, (
even an exploding one ) and because down range fall-out ( from 1000 to 1500
yards ) would be a factor with that single 4-1/2" diameter ball, it would be
more practical to use a standard load of what was called "Canister Shot". Using
Canister Shot turns the Mountain Howitzer into rather large shotgun.

A
standard load of canister shot for the 12 pound Mountain Howitzer Cannon - is
148 individual lead balls, specifically, .69 caliber ( dia ) lead "musket
balls".

All 148 lead balls are packed into a 4-1/2" diameter tin can with
the spaces between the balls, filled with saw dust. Total weight of this load
is about 10-1/4 pounds. Velocity of the load is approximately 1000 feet per
second, being lethal to about 250 yards. Down range fall-out is limited to only
approximately 400 yards. ( individual results may vary )

The nice thing
about using a canister shell in the Mountain Howitzer, is that each individual
.69 cal lead ball weighs 1-1/4 ounces. This is exactly the same size and weight
of a standard 12 gauge shotgun slug. ( by the way ...when you hunt with a Mtn.
Howitzer Cannon, it is advisable to have a 12 gage shotgun with you, with plenty
of empty fired shell cases. - details will follow )

Casting the needed
148 lead balls takes a bit of time, and lots of lead. It is not necessary to
have perfect balls (?) but check the weight of each to insure that none of them
have large internal voids which could affect their accuracy."

272 Evening all. I finally saw the neurosurgeon Tuesday morning. I will need surgery but it won't be as bad as I thought. He said a piece of my L5 had broken and was resting on the nerve and thus causing my pain. He can make a small (4 inch) incision and go in and pull that puppy outta there! So.. only an overnight stay and 2 weeks recovery at home. Good news! I guess it's sort of lacroscopic surgery.. it was hard to understand exactly but that's pretty much how he explained it. Surgery is next Wednesday.

273 I would apologize for going "off topic" but since I haven't really figured out what the topic is I shall procede to babble away. It's been a long week, hubby had an evil kidney wrestler abscond with his left kidney,...many hours of worry and sitting at bedside. He is home now and safely tucked in. I decided to have an adult beverage and relax. I made the mistake of logging onto FB only to see a friend of mine put a long post on about Phil Mickelson being a rich guy and why the hell can't he live on 40% of 60 million. I either need another adult beverage or new friends.

Posted by: 18-1 at January 23, 2013 10:27 PM (AUeaU)

Most CD players have a small hole in the faceplate where you can use a straightened paperclip to manually eject the CD. Not sure about an auto CD player, but there should be a similar mechanical means of ejecting.

The side dish was yellow squash and zucchini topped with a cheddar and parmesan cheese sauce and warm ciabata bread. Dessertwas coffee and Key lime pie. Yum!

I want to use it for reading almost exclusively, but if it was possible to type notes (not inside books) in it that would be amazing.

I like the Keyboard because it has unrestricted 3g (as I understand it) and reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide. Paperwhite has a better screen, I guess.

When I was in high school, I worked in a pancake house. We used to snake baker's yeast and try to make strawberry wine with the juice from canned strawberries. Obviously, we didn't know what we were doing, but we got it to where we made something that SEEMED to taste like alcohol, and even gave a bit of a buzz. Of course, the "drinking window" for this "wine" we made was about 8 hours, after which we ended up with some rather nice vinegar.

358 What do you think it is about Libs that makes them incapable of grasping basic economic concepts?
Posted by: Sean Bannion at January 23, 2013 10:40 PM (/dHSW)

1. It's not so much that being a liberals leads to them not understanding economics as if they did understand economics they wouldn't still hold the positions they hold. So, after a while, everybody who does understand it will be weeded out and you'll be left with arguing with those who just don't get it.

2. Intentions mean nothing. Now, that's something that should be taken into account in most policy decisions. It especially throws them for a loop, though, in economics. They don't get how they can institute a policy with the best of intentions that will completely f'k things up. They also don't get how a policy that, on its face, might look like pure greed can actually make things better for everybody.

380 Successful liberals have never felt the consequences of their philosophy. Some are in fields that don't directly feel the effects of liberalism. It's twice, thrice or more removed from it. You can't explain it, they also refuse to grasp the price structure implications of their policies.

Look I grew up poor I benfitted from aid, but that aid has a dual cost.

It cost folk to pay for it, and then my execution of commerce creates disequilibrium in price structure and markets.

Liberal policy hurts the poor but do you know who it devastates?

Calling the manufacturer service number in the user's manual might work. That's what I had to do to get my factory installed radio/CD up and running after installing a new battery. The loss of power while changing batteries did a hard reset to assumed theft mode and required a factory code to re-initiaize the player.

473 225 Sven10077- I grew up and live in MA. My father was a democrat and thought that the Kennedy family was royalty or something.
My first vote was for Reagan for president. My father loved Carter. He did not have the best judgement in that way, he was a dem and always voted for them.
He passed away six days before the 1988 election, my mother went to vote for Dukasis for my father even though she did not like him. I voted for Bush. I must be 10+ years older than you.

I honestly do not remember teachers talking about the presidents when I was in school. There was a lot going on then, Agnew resigned, Watergate Hearings, etc.
A friend and I used to come to my house after school, my house was much better, because my mother always cooked something for after school, homemade pizza or brownies. My house was the best choice. We'd then watch the Watergate Hearings but we really didn't know exactly what was going on.

I'm sure the OWS movement was formed because the frigging establishment was backing Romney, behind the scenes and TFG set it up as a way to get at Romney.

The GOP establishment has to go. The faux conservatives like Bill Kristol have to STFU, if you remember he was always calling for Christie to run. There are other faux conservatives, Rove that are now long past their expiration date as far as being relevant.

The republican primary system has to change, don't start in Iowa with a caucus because it's a tradition. It has to be a closed primary. If you are not a registered republican you cannot vote, etc.
Someone here, or some other site wrote that the reddest states should vote first. NH is not a red state, it's almost as blue as MA, I live in MA. I don't care if I vote last in the primary. By the time I have voted in the past two GOP primaries the nominee was almost certain. I voted for my first choice in the primary.

Other changes have to be made to the primary system, but those are a few.

From a reputable (or at least not nutbar) site (Examiner.com):

Shock claim: Obama only wants military leaders who 'will fire on U.S. citizens'

On Monday, renowned author and humanitarian Dr. Jim Garrow made a shocking claim about what we can expect to see in Obama's second term.

Garrow made the following Facebook post:

I have just been informed by a former senior military leader that Obama is using a new “litmus test” in determining who will stay and who must go in his military leaders. Get ready to explode folks. “The new litmus test of leadership in the military is if they will fire on US citizens or not.” Those who will not are being removed.

So, who is the source?

Garrow replied: “The man who told me this is one of America’s foremost military heroes.”

Understand, this is not coming from Alex Jones or Jesse Ventura, or from anyone else the left often dismisses with great ease.

Garrow is a well-respected activist and has spent much of his life rescuing infant girls from China, babies who would be killed under that country's one-child policy. He was also nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

527 @CarolT, I agree with closed primaries. I am not sure starting with the reddest state would be the best way to go though. I really don't want an Akin to squeak through based on his faith and not his skillz.

It would make more sense to do a couple states at a time that are different for balance, eg CA & TX go week 1 (or maybe they go last to make the final decision?)

Maybe try to balance the number of EV up for grabs each week.

I want to say we should weight states we win, but is that wise?

****

the color green is found most often in nature and is a calming color. That's why it's used in hospitals. On the other hand, in a business setting it was at one time considered a poor choice of color for the office. It was even listed as a color that invokes feelings of distrust in a business setting.

That's probably no longer the case.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 24, 2013 12:16 AM (piMMO)

534 @CarolT, don't go so far with the green jacket choice. If there was any machination in that choice, it will be to give some poisoned red-meat for the right to drag around and look dumb. The Dems love to do this.

Green was also the color of Qadaffi's answer to Mao's little red book. He had a little green book. So don't read too much into green. The Islamists tend to use black flags, BTW.

The paraquat thing was nothing but an over-hyped scare:

During the late 1970s, a controversial program sponsored by the US government sprayed paraquat on cannabis fields in Mexico. Since much of this cannabis was subsequently smoked by Americans, the US government's "Paraquat Pot" program stirred much debate. Perhaps in an attempt to deter people from using cannabis, representatives of the program warned that spraying rendered the crop unsafe to smoke.

However, independent bodies have studied paraquat in this use. A 1995 study found that "no lung or other injury in cannabis users has ever been attributed to paraquat contamination". Also a United States Environmental Protection Agency manual states: "... toxic effects caused by this mechanism have been either very rare or nonexistent. Most paraquat that contaminates cannabis is pyrolyzed during smoking to dipyridyl, which is a product of combustion of the leaf material itself (including cannabis) and presents little toxic hazard."

565 from the Washington Times and This Aint Hell

reports that investigators into the events leading up to the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three veterans at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya discovered that the State Department had reduced by two-thirds the security detail in Libya in the days prior to the September 11th attack despite the warnings that folks on the ground were sending to Washington regarding the deteriorating situation there.

The investigators have determined that between May and September, the department reduced the number of Mobile Security Deployment teams from three to one, thinning the potential U.S. security officers available to protect diplomats by at least twelve, the Washington Guardian has learned.
In addition, the lone remaining six-member Mobile Security Team in Libya at the time Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed was detailed primarily to training Libyan security officials rather than providing force protection to U.S. officials, the sources told the Washington Guardian.
That’s been my problem with this situation all along – not that there weren’t enough security people, but that they had reduced security despite pleas from the ambassador for beefing up security. Remember they also had military people on the ground there which they also withdrew in the weeks prior to the assault on the consulate.
It’s almost as if they were inviting an attack

History, geopolitics and the very words of the Palestinian leadership, religious leadership and media are just mystically uninterpretable symbols to the left, best left unexplored.

I knew a Jordanian girl at college, nice, reasonable, practical... until the topic of Israel came up, and she went completely apeshit. Not only were all evils in the world attributable to Israel, but to hear her tell it, we were minutes away from israel invading the entire middle east and killing everyone in their beds.

Kind of reminds me of what liberals think about Republicans.

The genetic marker(s) to re-grow teeth every several years exist, we just don't know what they are. A handful of people have grown three instead of two sets of teeth.

Teething every several years would suck, but you'd have *fresh*, perfect teeth afterward.

Hey, it could be an option. Also, I know someone who drinks sugary soda all day and never gets cavities, so maybe we need to find that genetic marker as well.

618 from Fox on Jan 2
Egypt would add the state-of-the-art F-16s, built by Lockheed-Martin, to its fleet of 200 fighter jets. The M1A1 Abrams battle tanks would allow Egypt to increase its number of tanks by 20 percent. The first delivery is to take place Jan. 22. Critics say the arms could end up being used against neighboring Israel or even against the Egyptian people, should Morsi ever face a Syria-style revolt

They got the first four jets. We are paying for all this too. Its a gift.

Maybe not for you. I finally lost one to unrepairable damage over a year ago. I spent like $2000 on dental care last year - at a discount. In addition to naturally weak teeth, I have two health conditions that weaken teeth. Well, they may account for the "natural weakness," so there you go.

My life is like a Teeth-Grinder. Luckily I don't literally grind my teeth or I'd have dentures by now.

I actually lose a couple filling a year, on average. They degrade and fall out, usually while I'm eating or brushing.

Jake leg didn't come from methanol, but from a organophosphate used in a patent medicine/Prohibition dodge called Jamaica Ginger, or "Jake," that was about 70% ethanol. Ginger was too expensive, so the bootleggers looked for something else that would pass Fed residue testing, and came up ("innocently") with what turned out to be a neurotoxin that attacked the spinal cord. Mero, this particular phraseology I think that it is really a code for the Free Shit Army revolting and rioting.

Because that is a real and present danger, especially if the free shit stops flowing.

I mention this because of all the usual complaints about this word or that word being code words for blacks or minorities, which is usually a pile of crap. But the FSA is not composed of minorities, though they are well represented.

And I really do half wonder if the reason for TFG's re-election was in part due to people worrying about the ensuing riots if he was tossed out on his tin ears, so they voted to 'keep the peace'.

Getting here late for Buzzsaw, but to a certain extent I'm in the same frame of mind -- I've got all but 4 wisdom teeth of the original set, with 2-1/2 crowns and a few fillings -- mainly old amalgams, but a few newer resins. My dentist has been telling me that "the amalgams are breaking down !!1!!eleventy!!!1!" for a number of years, and I've been mainly blowing it off -- except I let him change a couple near the end of last year because they were in the way of getting to another spot on a different tooth. I find it hard to get too excited about stuff.

OTOH, I do have 4 cleanings a year -- which is 2 on me (about $100/ea) plus the two that insurance will pay for (which include xrays and exams). It's hardly high tech, but my teeth have been pretty stable over the last couple of decades while doing this.

As far as the whole "stimulate the buds to produce another set of teeth" sort of science-fiction-y stuff.... Sounds great, it'll take you 18-kajillion years to get it through the anti-progress bureaucrats at the FDA, and when they give it the upcheck because sufficient graft and kickbacks were applied, it'll turn out to simultaneously sprout teeth at both ends of your digestive tract -- followed by the usual massive Government coverup and misinformation campaign denying the existence of thousands of victims who were bitten while wiping.

Yeah, it's late...

I'd be willing to provide several specific taxes for funding the Sahara irrigation project -- an excise tax on public-sector unions' lobbying expenditures, a 10% surcharge on Hollywood film revenues, a 50% tax on all increased education expenses from a baseline year not provably leading to a measurable rise in student achievement, a 10% tax on all student identification costs for non-STEM majors (the ID-10T fee)....

I found it interesting that the linked article says the aquifer is 140-230 meters thick, but you have to go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Manmade_River to find out that it's often 500 meters deep. Which gets you to the big issue with irrigating the Sahara -- without organic material to keep it near the surface, a drop of water soon passes beyond plant root areas and is lost in the great void between the surface and the water table.

The oceans have an area of about 335M km^2, so 150K km^3 would increase the depth of all oceans by about .45 meters if you pumped it dry and dumped it into the nearest gulf -- which the freakin' tree-huggers would immediately blame on global warming.

Well, the wikipedia article on the NSAS says it's about 2M km^2, and -- as noted previously -- all the oceans have an area of about 335M km^2, so that should be pretty simple to work out -- the oceans' area is about 168 times the size of the aquifer's.

That actually has two very different answers.

The first one is "not a lot" -- fossil aquifers, locked hundreds of meters below the surface with water collected over millenia, don't really have a lot of recognizable life in them because -- by the time water percolates that far down, there's not a lot of chemical reactions left to power living cells. That may be compared to this -- http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/databank/entries/do77li.html -- for instance....where they weren't expecting life, but there was free energy, so....

But the second would be, "who knows?" -- because on your way there, you're likely to pass by regions not very well explored. It's like everyone and their brother-in-law know what's going on in the top 10 feet of soil -- it's daily table-talk for farmers and biologists. But below, say, 40'??? Truth is, nobody knows. Things lurk beneath that people don't know about -- e.g. http://www.extremescience.com/biggest-living-thing.htm .

737 I think part of the problem is that some BBQ sauces (western comes to mind) are "brush on, and throw the meat on the grill", while others are "braise meat in sauce", and others are almost "stew meat in sauce". Like I said, the "brushing it on while dry-roasting" is severely deficient. And it makes a lot more sense for it to be more of a braise, where the vinegar gets time to work.

I made a couple pulled pork butts last year. I used a rub to marinate it for 24 hours prior to putting in the crock pot for about 10 hours. Found some Carolina sause at local store. I was wonderful. I made my own rub and the flavor seemed to penetrate pretty well.

When folks out here say "BBQ", they generally mean roasted with a cooked-on sauce over open coals. I gather this is somewhat different out there.

743 Hehe- seems anything we cook on the grill is bbq. I don't have a pit so I was looking to do a cheater pulled pork in the winter. I would love to have a pit and the time to practice.

745 I think the BBQ as anyting grilled is a coastal corruption--and I say that as a proud East Coaster. The limited, southern definition is more to my liking, although I still like using "barbecue" to describe any party/gathering where grilled meats will be featured.

The pork BBQ in restaurants is *almost* never a chain; in Ohio they have City Barbecue, which does everything--brisket, Carolina pork, St. Louis ribs, chicken--though the founder had the good sense to go to Carolina, Texas, etc. to learn how to make the meats. Best brisket I had was a place in Dallas whose name I don't remember, and you look for the out of the way places down south with the big fat black chefs for pork.

weakness, shortness of breath, resting pulse of 130-140, edema and fluid in the lungs, what do you figure first off?"

Inhalation anthrax or Marburg. Shoot them, thermite the area.

748 There is a regional chain out this way called "Armadillo Willy's" ( http://www.armadillowillys.com/ ) where they claim to serve BBQ, but where they actually serve smoked brisket.

I've heard that when you get out into the country, there are some BBQ joints that will curl your toes .
