| Salon's "Correction"![]() Photoshop of by @johnekdahl, including Salon's "Editor at Large" Joan Walsh 2013 Corrections On Jan. 22, Salon republished an article from one of our content partners, the Weeklings, that was sympathetic to unfounded 9/11 conspiracies. The article slipped through our usual review process, and was clearly not up to our standards; we removed it as soon as it was brought to our attention by readers. Salon has a long history of debunking fringe conspiracists — around Sept. 11, and more recently, Sandy Hook — and are proud of those efforts. We regret this oversight. The support of 9/11 Trutherism wasn't a single sentence buried in the 17th paragraph of the piece. It was the entire precis of the article; indeed, it appeared right in the headline itself. Give truthers a chance? Not all conspiracy theorists are as crazy as Alex Jones and the Sandy Hook Truthers would have you believe. And then it's right there in a big fat paragraph that explains the headline: What concerns me about the repudiation of the Hookers is that the 9/11 Truthers are being tarred with the same “crackpot” brush [as other conspiracy theorists]. Yes, many of the September Eleventh conspiracy theories are implausible, and too often veer, as conspiracy theories unfortunately tend to do, toward the anti-Semitic. But unlike with Sandy Hook, 9/11 conspiracy theories flow from a scientific fact: whatever the 9/11 Commission Report might claim, fire generated by burning jet fuel is not hot enough to melt steel. As with JFK’s “Magic Bullet,” the official version asks us to pretend that the laws of physics do not exist. And then this: Another criterion, when evaluating conspiracy theories, is the “Cicero test”; we must ask ourseves: Cui bono? It’s not enough to suggest that the official record is wrong; without a motive for the deceit, absent some obvious beneficiary, there can be no conspiracy. To wit: there are any number of reasons any number of people could have benefited from the removal of JFK from office. The attacks of 9/11, similarly, had countless ripple effects, sparking a massive re-investment in the U.S. military, two wars that cost trillions of dollars, and that legislated erosion of our privacy with the Orwellian name, the Patriot Act, to name but three. Many, many organizations, corporations, states, and individuals benefited, directly or indirectly, from the events of that day.So the "Sandy Hook conspiracy" falls because there is no good answer to the "Cui bono?" "Cicero test" (as these Mensa Chapter Presidents term it), but the 9/11 Truth conspiracy does pass the test. So, you know: 9/11 "Truth" is respectable and stuff. And even in the conclusion: So: the Sandy Hook conspiracy theory has neither basis in fact nor motive. It is, in a word, bunk. But that does not mean that all conspiracy theories are automatically wrong, or that we should believe whatever the government tells us without question. The JFK “truthers” were eventually vindicated, and the government lies all the time. Keep an open mind! Like the proverbial broken clock, even Alex Jones is right sometimes. This is not some stray remark. Again, this is the whole point of the article, as telegraphed in the headline. Now Salon says: The article slipped through our usual review process, and was clearly not up to our standards; we removed it as soon as it was brought to our attention by readers.Does their "usual review process" include reading even the headlines? So you didn't "review" the headline, and you also didn't bother to check the conclusion, either? It was only "brought to their attention by readers"? A category -- "readers" -- which appears not to include a single staffer or editor at Salon? Would it be more honest for Salon to just confess they don't have a "review process"? If you can't even be bothered to skim the headlines of the pieces you publish, you don't have a "review process." Comments1

I hadn't paid much attention, but the few bits I'd seen regarding Sandy
Hook seemed to revolve around the almost immediate control and co-opting of the media narrative by the Administration into a massive Gun Control Agenda. Now, that dog and pony show was most likely prepped and waiting on an opportunity and the Administration clearly hoped to benefit from a hue and cry to disarm American Citizens; and that was a Conspiracy just not the one people are looking for. Posted by: Nevergiveup at January 23, 2013 07:57 PM (jE38p) I think Homer wrote this: "My favorite bird is the pelican. His beak can hold more than his belly can.But I don't know how the Hell it can!" Posted by: Hrothgar at January 23, 2013 08:02 PM (Cnqmv) 207
@190Ok I obviously missed a teeny tiny detail somewhere. How exactly were the JFK truthers vindicated? Somebody help a natural born liar out here. --------------------------------------------- I could be wrong, but I think it's basically "Becuz Oliver Stone sez so!" I remember when I had that fender-bender back in the 70s with my Toyota Celica. I had to wait forever for the body shop to get the fender from the steel mines. They had to dig around until they found the right fender for my car. If only there was some way that the fender could have been forged using heat of some kind. But we all know that fire can't be made hot enough to melt steel. Posted by: Marmo at January 23, 2013 08:06 PM (pcgW1) 212

Another up-vote for The Lone Gunmen - it had a wistful, almost Buckaroo Banzai vibe to it at times that was a nice counterpoint to the relentless darkness of Scully and Mulder's grim pursuit of either the Monster of the Week or the latest iteration of the Syndicate. But please, some love as well for Millennium - that show broke new ground in entertainment, touching on themes that prime-tine television had never dared to tackle, unafraid in its willingness to confront true evil and call it for what it was, with the whole brought to brilliant, evocative life through the acting chops of the underappreciated Lance Henriksen. If nothing else, think of the legacy - so much of current television is, in one way or another, doing riffs on what Millennium had already laid down. Serious question, though - did anyone get a glimpse at enough of the entire article to see what, if anything, was cited as having "vindicated" the JFK Conspiracy nuts? Surely they're not just going on Cyril Wecht's "magic bullet" nonsense, are they? Posted by: A. Pendragon at January 23, 2013 08:13 PM (wJliR) 215
jet fuel on fire isn't hot enough to melt steel.
but it will weaken it. significantly. this has been proven again and again but yet somehow the nuts want to play whack-a-mole. Posted by: jd at January 23, 2013 08:35 PM (DGhcv) 216

I am gonna reiterate.
As the steel is exposed to more heat its strength, integrity and structure degrade. Blacksmiths have known this since the iron age. Posted by: Holger at January 23, 2013 08:54 PM (MHk3m) 218
When I worked in a refinery way back when, we would always spray the support structures with "fire Proofing" insulation. Obviously we, the NFPA, and API, not to mention our industrial insurance company, were all fools.

@218 Tower floor trusses were sprayed also. Not enough and where the planes impacted, that was probably knocked off the trusses. The fireproofing specification emerged from the Port Authority of NYNJ, but no basis for the spec was found, AFAIK.

My favorite thing about the article is that it props itself up with supposed "fact" that the JFK conspiracy people were proven correct. I love the JFK conspiracy stuff...but only because it shows everyone just EXACTLY WHY one must tread carefully when falling for conspiracy theories. The JFK assassination is an event in our history where a very clear majority of our country believed (and likely still believes) that it was a massive conspiracy that killed the President and then covered it up. Very few of the general public believed that it was the work of a lone gunman in a building. AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WAS WRONG. Numerous amounts of scholarly research has proven and reproven that Kennedy was in fact killed by Oswald and he did it all with that simple bolt action rifle in a building. What seemed to be a crazy explaination...turned out to be right. No conspiracy. No multiple shooters. Just one guy did it. Its the reason you should always take conspiracy theories with a grain of salt. Incidentlally its why we on the right should be careful with the Benghazi stuff as well. The whole premise of the article falls apart because it is propped up on a conspiracy theory that was a load of hysterical bunk that failed the test of science...just like the 9/11 truthers...just like the Sandy Hook truthers...just like the birthers. Posted by: Chris at January 24, 2013 09:13 AM (kyeFg) 235
I think you're giving Salon a break that they don't deserve when you ask if they even bother to read the headline. Unless things have changed dramatically, headlines are usually not written by the person who writes an article or editorial, they're written by an editor working for the publication. Unless Salon just grabbed the whole piece - headline and all - from their "content partner" then someone on their staff had to have read the piece and understood the content well enough to summarize it in a headline.

"The whole premise of the article falls apart because it is propped up on a conspiracy theory that was a load of hysterical bunk that failed the test of science...just like the 9/11 truthers...just like the Sandy Hook truthers...just like the birthers." I'm still waiting for the science, or any evidence whatso-freakin' ever that Sandy Hook happened as told to us by the MFM. I won't be holding my breath. Posted by: JDR-Taq at January 24, 2013 10:05 AM (e7KZr) 237
The editors were paying attention, they just got their asses handed to them on the fact platter in public and now are spinning like a cantelope on a stick. Suddenly they weren't paying attention or their fact checkers were on an smoke break, or the dog ate it or SQUIRREL! Nevermind!
I keep getting this mental image of this woman holding a stainless steel spork, and desperately saying 'how did this happen???' Posted by: tired at January 24, 2013 10:27 AM (adOUE) 238
JDR-Taq, <sigh> I have no doubt that the actual details of Sandy Hook will be different from the story that was reported as it happened...but it has to do with the journalists involved being bad at their jobs and shills for the left...not because of a conspiracy.
