They won'trelease the name of the "victim". The "victim" has a student ID so they assume he is a student, but aren't saying for sure. The victim and the assailantwere heard arguing, and each fired on the other with pistols. The assailant has a record for theft and drug dealing. They suspect it may be gang related. The assailant is black, don't know about the "victim".

This is not the gun control case they are looking for.

It's not that they don't feel demeaned, it's that they want to be demeaned by the "right" sort of people. Liberal women are too fragile, too insecure, to be accountable for their own lives, so they look for a big government daddy to make it all better.

Certainly. Obama's already been sworn in to his 2nd term.

- "Boston Anti-Crime Advocate Shoots Girlfriend In The Head With Illegal Gun"

The irony would be lost on liberals.

- "Obama Likely To Bypass Congress To Fulfill Climate Change Pledge"

Definitely. As CEO of the federal government Obama controls all of the agencies, in this particular case the EPA. The EPA has vast regulatory powers separate and apart from Congress.

Elections have consequences. And once you get outside the coffee klatches and sewing circles of the chattering classes the gruesome reality is that policies can and do have catastrophic impacts on real people. By the time Obama is done with his war on coal power a lot fewer people will be employed and a lot more people will have that much more trouble making ends meet, in light of the drastically higher costs of basic utilities.

52 Here in Cali food trucks are multiplying... Because government regulation makes it so hard to open a regular restaurant.

On a local level alone, you have to go through multiple commissions, each requiring it's own hearing, each capable of stopping your new business on it's own, each legal empowered to impose unlimited "conditions" on you...

And of course, the already established restaurants know this. So often times one of the owners/brothers/etc of your competition gets to be in charge of approving competition.

And guess what they do? Yup. Stop new competitors with the force of law.

So those that try to stick it out use tricks to avoid it.

Instead of fixing the problem, they naturally decide... We need to go after those trucks!!!

on the ground, then taking his wallet, police said.

One of the

Over at Slate, they begin up Climate Change with this quote from President Barack Obama’s inaugural address …
“That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.”
Obama falls into the trap. Captain James T Kirk frames the question right in “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” (1989), … “What does God need with a starship?”
Why does God need us to do anything ? God is God, the omnipotent.
Every time I head something like that uttered by Obama, I think of the Crusaders and the Jihadists, the holy warriors, who tell us they are going it for God. No, they are not. They are doing it for themselves. An omnipotent God just doesn’t work that way.

91 I'll just hit it again for the yuck factor: I didn't retch at the 40-year abortion thing until SmooveDaddy laughed. He sounded just like the witch doctor in "Live and Let Die." I looked up the actor's name. It was Geoffrey Holder.

I'd think an evening of being talked to like that would make any woman into an abortion proponent. Or a castration proponent. Maybe even a r-r-racist.

No, they'll move into Central Asia, Siberia, or against India first. Taiwan will fall when the government realizes that the US no longer has the clout to protect the region.

They may eventually make a go for Siberia, but I think they'll attack the Senior Citizen's home er Japan for a tune up first.

Ivan could do far worse than importing pioneers to start settling Siberia on their behalf and kicking resources into their system for a low care and upkeep outlay on their part.

Nothing.

But that's not how the Chinese look at it. It would be reversing a loss of face, and that is worth a lot to a very nationalistic people.

And it's not really a lot of trouble for them at all. It's a quick military action, and the Chinese have shown on multiple occasions they really could not care less about what the world thinks.

100 Sean,

Maybe. I used to think so too. Now I'm not so sure.

I've had some good discussions here at the HQ about how I think the entire world is actually at a "spark and powderedkeg" moment right now, as the world over everyone is realizing simultaneously that the US under Obama is not going to honor it's commitments.

It could spark accidentally. If things continue in China they'll force a spark somewhere (more likely with Japan or Indonesia than over Taiwan, at least, at first).

But once it sparks, and the US backs down on a commitment, the dogs of war will be released the world over.

I think Taiwan is much lower risk both politically and militarily than tackling Japan, India, or Indonesia.

115 Taiwan to Beijing is a breakaway province. 1949 Chaing-kai Chek and the Nationalists retreated there as Mao seized Peiking. So to take Taiwan would complete the Communist revolution of China.

And PLAAF SU-27s based in Taiwan would give PRC the ability to deny more sea area against Japan and South Korea. Which would free up the new aircraft carrier to expand the area of denial and better threaten the Philippines.

The Tsars tried that. It's why there are any cities at all in the reason. So did the Soviets. Russians have demographic issues like most other upper-tier nations these days, and their ability to trust 'foreigners' has never been good enough to trust them to colonize on their behalf. (And if you don't think they know Texas history, you're wrong.)

China will get into a couple of local skirmishes to hone skills, Japan on the edges, maybe something to do with Korea or a rematch with Vietnam...looking for "goodfights", as teh EVE crowd might say it. But the real deal is, they're looking north. Taiwan's coming along peacefully, no point wasting fuel and material there. Russia's hollowing and they know it.

123 118 Sean Bannion,

Population reduction is a feature not a bug, but from an economics of attrition versus gain standpoint Sean Japan would be my guess.

The Chinese get a hard on from outsmarting the opponent and using negative response stimuli as a means of control.

Nailing Japan to get Taiwan keeps the Taiwanese investor class happy, forces Taipei to humble itself asking for reintegration, leaves assets for use against Siberia or Vietnam, and has Japanese blood on the sword for Japanese antics that to the Chinese mind happened yesterday.

China establishes defacto hegemony and destroys US perceived power with two or three moves instead of 5.

An economy of force, while still allowing addition by subtraction of spare males.

You're thinking like a Westerner. Gotta stop that. Doesn't matter how we think. What matters is how they think, and they think they want to stick a thumb in the eye of the West and get their "breakaway" province back.

Although I agree that the Senakus are a similarly very low-risk operation.

I went to the Naval War College in 1998 for my Senior Service College, and I played "Global" that year. (see here for an explanation: http://scoamf.us/6d ). That year, and every year since then has always been a "grab for Taiwan" scenario, and the reason is that there is a ton of open source and classified intelligence to back up that assumption.

Agreed, but there was a lot of Apocalyptic talk about persecution of Hong Kong in '97 in '77 and it did not come to pass, the Chinese view HK as strange Chinese and slowly over time as communist fervor has cooled and nationalism gained momentum the Chinese people view Taiwan in a similar vein. The Govt officials may still have some coup they want counted but if their objective is to play their people like a fiddle I still say Japan.

Posted by: sven10077 at January 23, 2013 10:30 AM (LRFds)

Obama nixed the 66 F-16C/D Block 52 Falcons. Too bad TFG did not suggest to Taiwan they talk to Japan about buying F-2s US would have to approve the sale since the F-2 is a Japanese Agile Falcon but would have still sent a message to Beijing that the US wants them to behave. And what better way than to arm Taipei by the Japanese.

147 Sven I think you are projecting the normal wishes of any human being, I don't want war, onto the Beijing Politburo. If Beijing thinks it's wang is bent out of shape over Taiwan, the serfs can do nothing except endure while some die.

Japan will bring a different reaction now that Beijing is again waving the bloody shirt of Nanking. And that recent film of the Rape of Nanking did not help. But it also shows the Politburo will use any stick to stir up the masses since the soldiers who were defending Nanking were Nationalist soldiers and not Mao's.
