| ONT 1-22-13 - Stuff from My Bookmarks edition [krakatoa]I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm drinking scotch and not regretting in the least my choice to leave the tv off all day yesterday. Today was productive. Got a lot of projects tied up. I went swimming in my lap pool. (Again - not a "1 percenter" -- just relishing what you can find in a crappy housing market.) Ate leftover smoked goods I made on Saturday. And discovered that nobody else was doing an ONT. Lucky you, I have a lot of bookmarks for just such an occasion. And to be strictly clear, that occasion is officially known as "An ONT from the idiot that said "if nobody else volunteers, I'll do it..."" Without further ado, allow me to waste Ace's bandwidth with stuff krak thinks are worth saving. From Work Reference Material, the subnet cheat sheet that often saves me hours of troubleshooting why the stupid server won't work with the stupid configurations that were, stupidly, provided to me. From Travel, a site dedicated to maximizing airline miles. In its own prominent space, a bookmark showing the location of the crankshaft position sensors on a '97 Nissan Maxima. Luckily, I already fixed the problem, as this link now gets a 404. Hey. I didn't say they'd be useful bookmarks to anyone. Just that they were bookmarks. From the Financial folder, a link to the Ariad board on IHUB. I'm not telling you to buy, even though I think it's going significantly higher in the next 18 months. I just want to brag that my cost-averaged price is about 3.50. It won't take me from the ranks of the "99 percent", but it is going to buy me a sweet geothermal HVAC system this year. I'm going to throw a curve to you from the Blogs folder. It's not really a blog, but a fun lists website, dogeared on 10 fun tricks to play on your noodle. I'm pretty sure the Ganzfeld Procedure is responsible for this:![]()
Finally, from my 2012 folder, a timeless speech given by Ronaldus Maximus in which he quotes Churchill:
They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits-not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty."Remember our duty, fellow travelers. The road is rarely smooth. The weather is often foul. The powers that be are never going to stand aside, and never will relent from the furtherence of their neo-aristocracy. I don't particularly believe that the way forward requires new ideas, or new plans. I think it requires only duty and the fortitude to weather the storm that has come to us with determination, and if possible, with good cheer. So a tip of my soon-to-be-refilled glass to you, compadres. ![]() CommentsPosted by: weft cut-loop at January 22, 2013 09:41 PM (xz0nG) 2

The Death or Rebirth of the Nation-State in Europe
The division and strife that the European Union was meant to abolish is rearing it ugly head in the coming years. Separatism has turned from local grievance to outright referenda on independence from various nation state in the EU. The only question is whether this will signal a shattering of the EU, or its ultimate consolidation. Catalonia appears set to offer a referendum this year to the people of Catalonia on whether they wish to separate from Spain and become their own independent country. Catalonia, with its own distinct Romance language of Catalan, has been part of Spain, or its predecessor state Aragon since the 12th century. Despite this not being fully legal according to Spanish Law, the pro-Independence majority in the Catalan regional assembly is emboldened to push forward. Hey Morons, got a question. With all the buzz about Nick Searcy around here and folks enthused about Justified, I figured I'd rent the first season from Netflix and catch up on what I've been missing. So far, though, I'm not feeling it. I've gotten through the first three episodes and while I like the rural Kentucky gunslinger motif, it's not really as played up as I thought it would be. It doesn't seem like there's much to differentiate Justified from other cop shows.
Does it get better as it goes on? I enjoy Searcy when he's on screen (I don't know if that's his personal charisma or the fact that he's "one of us," but either way), and the show is decent enough but I'm not really wowed by it yet. Is it slow to start, or am I just not cool enough to get it? Posted by: Caiwyn at January 22, 2013 09:53 PM (pR28l) 32

Question -- what are the economics of all the TV streaming sites? Who is recording all these shows and sporting events and streaming them for free on the internet? And why are they doing it? What do they get out of it?
Ok, I know the popular sites have ads and make money that way. But all the popular streaming sites I've ever seen (like vipbox or frontrowsports) just have embedded streams from other sites. That seems to be their tactic to avoid liability (though I think several have been arrested). But that means somewhere there is somebody recording the live TV and streaming it. And they definitely are liable. And all their effort gets monetized by the sites that collect all the streaming links. I'm just confused about who is recording and streaming seemingly every TV show, every NBA game, every NHL game, every soccer match, etc etc. And why are they doing it? Are they just bored teenagers? Is it the Russian mafia? Seems the risks are high and the rewards are low. But these free streams are so common now there must be something about the economics of it that I don't understand. I must either be overestimating the cost and risk -- or underestimating the reward. Can a moron explain it? Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 22, 2013 10:39 PM (ZPrif) 174

Howard Jones, "Things Can Only Get Better". 'Sup, rons and ettes? Posted by: Art Bell's Dumber Cousin at January 22, 2013 10:46 PM (5J54Q) 197
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees, For the maples want more sunlight And the oaks ignore their pleas. The trouble with the maples, (And they're quite convinced the're right) They say the oaks are just too lofty And they grab up all the light. But the oaks can't help their feelings If they like the way they're made. And they wonder why the maples Can't be happy in their shade. There is trouble in the Forest, And the Creatures all have fled, As the Maples scream oppression, And the Oaks just shake their heads. So the maples formed a union And demanded equal rights. "These oaks are just too greedy; We will make them give us light." Now there's no more oak oppression, For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw. Another sad night for you lonely Morons, with your pathetic lives dedicated to right wing hate. See the void that racism and negativity have left in you? Why not fill that void with love for your fellow man, and for the human race in general? Barack Obama can set you upon that path. Accept him. Accept him into your heart. Help him help you make a better tomorrow for our planet.
Two bottles of a really good sustainable-agriculture fair-trade locally made merlot and I am less annoyed by your squabblings than I usually am. Any suggestions for sports radio shows/podcasts?
I like the Dan Patrick Show. Pretty sure he's a righty. He pretty much never talks politics and is friends with Adam Sandler, a known righty. Jay Mohr, the comedian, now has a Fox Sports radio show. Pretty funny. He's gone on O'Reilly. Was at least respectful. Plus I heard him make a Mooch joke about her looking like a WNBA power forward and Patrick Ewing in a dress. The Dan LeBetard Show can be funny. The radio show more than the ESPN show. He doesn't talk politics a lot, but his father is a Cuban exile who hates Castro and the commies. So he can't be super left-wing. Theory is that those who don't talk politics are usually to the right. Cause the left-wing Obama-scum in the media can't help themselves. They love to get all high and mighty and preachy. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 22, 2013 11:03 PM (ZPrif) 262

283 IronGrampa,
it is another case of "magic democrat words" yes you are correct in economics minimum wage is defined as the minimum wage that a job can be done for acceptably, but thanks to the magic of "LAW" minimum wage in Donkovia is "eleventy kajillion!" You want to know why you can't buy an inexpensive American shirt? *ching* Abolishing minimum wage and letting the market set baseline living costs would fix a lot of things, thankfully we have organized a system that rewards a group of people for keeping unskilled and entry level workers unemployed. *warning the above post may have random pcokets of sarcasm apologies if they suck Posted by: sven10077 at January 22, 2013 11:12 PM (LRFds) 295
I did not watch television today either. I put it on once and they had TFG, TFVP and wives going to Mass! Turned it off.
I think i have a broken tailbone, my doctor thinks it is so I have been relaxing and listening to the radio most of today. I am more comfortable not using my laptop. Please forgive me for posting and not reading all the comments. I have to go to work tomorrow. I haven't been there since last Monday. I hope tomorrow we find out good news, maybe the republicans have found their spines! I know that there is a debt ceiling vote tomorrow and Hillary is supposed to testify about Benghazi tomorrow. I might have turned it on for that. Ambassador sent a cable that day, Rush mentioned it and had a link to it. Of course it is from a British newspaper! Justified took a while to settle in and figure out what it was. Once it focuses on Harlan County, and the doings there, it becomes great. Also, Wade Goggins (Boyd) was unavailable for a while in Season 1. If you get impatient, skip to Episode 9. But if you just stick with it, you will be rewarded. Posted by: Splunge at January 22, 2013 11:13 PM (2IW5Q) 298

I don't know. The PEople's Republic of Washington has (I believe) the highest minimum wage in the US. Something like almost $10 per hour and is set to go up. THe economy would be in a complete shambles if not for Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks and Amazon. But, as most know, many of these companies are moving out of WA due to the unfriendly business enviromnent. As it stands, the economy here, even with those businesses, sucks. And of course, it is simply isn't enough for a "living wage" or whatever commies call that term. Now that I look back on my post I notice I didn't answer your question, I just ranted. 353 Katya the designated driver,
I made that point when I got back from the meeting with my realtor yesterday. There are a lot of people who will happily pay $8.50 for a buffet that used to cost $4.75 and take the media's word for it that there is NO INFLATION! I remember growing up telling some of the 20 something college kids that prices would go up when MW went to $4.25 and was right. TSR books went from 10 bucks when I started working to $12.00 to right as minimum wage went up $15.00. People never you get you never catch the tail, well they used to before price controls nuked the economy as I was being born. If only there were a profession dedicated to teaching individuals who are uneducated in various disciplines a starting base of knowledge and used lab examples to get theories and laws of said disciplines at least a rudimentary exposure to a body of said individuals. I wonder if you'd need special buildings to congregate groupings of these "students" together with a profession called "teachers?" Magnum T.A., or Terry Allen, was a man's man and a great actor. He was friends in real life with Tully Blanchard and the Andersens, as well as Nikita Koloff.
But in public, they all carefully maintained their television feud. They never ate, drank, or vacationed together until after Terry's car accident cut his career short in, I believe, 1985. He could have been Ric Flair or even Hulk Hogan. He was a tremendous performer in and out of the ring. Posted by: Truman North, at 25% battery life at January 22, 2013 11:41 PM (I2LwF) 376
358 Bebe,
No bebe I am not trying to cause heat between anyone and Ace...the whole point of my thoughts going back to the other thread was in support of Ace's notion that the left in entertainment death of ten million papercuts us. I get that my stuff is often angry, when I am not in the mood to be bothered cryptic and lacking punctuation but how shall I convey to you that while what beck does is good it is lacking in original Dramatic non newsy content to your liking? Family Guy at one time volleyed left and right with semi-equal aplomb, and has devolved into an orgy of self-indulgent right bashing. There's a reason I own five seasons and not more. I am not trying to generate an ounce of heat with you more than needed. I apologize, I am a downer and was rather angry all day that CBS' "political director" just tried to give Obama a fatwa on us OPENLY and is not ashamed he got caught. Again I am trying to shift to a topic that came up that I have a little knowledge on, can sometimes make a mirthful point on, and try to leave with at least a snarl on my face that if one squints looks like a poor smile and maybe try for a smile or an eyeroll from some here. I am sorry I gave such great offense by my lack of telepathy that giving Glenn Beck 2 grand to be and produce Glenn Beck was the way to get a sitcom or drama. Question here. Andy "Gunner" Cuomo is proposing raising the min wage to $8.75 per hour. I always thought min wage was what you got paid while your employer was deciding whether to keep you or not. A high min wage posits (to me) that your expected to work at that wage through your career, with no further advancement. Is this a misconception on my part? Posted by: irongrampa at January 22, 2013 11:09 PM (SAMxH) It's just not those jobs. A lot of union contracts have escalators in them tied to the minimum wage, so that if the minimum wage goes up then the union members' wages go up and the union collects more in dues which then goes into the pockets of the Dems for their political activities. Magnum T.A., or Terry Allen, was a man's man and a great actor. Posted by: Truman North, at 25% battery life at January 22, 2013 11:41 PM (I2LwF) His feuds with Tully and Nikita were awesome. 411 Lou's a girl,
I did not take it personally Lou I appreciate your response and I am not angry at Bebe. I am in an angry place, my son came home angry they wasted his class time today making him watch "Channel One" which is, I think, CNN's defacto Child Indoctrination Programming and their fawning coverage of Barrypalooza. The boy pointed out the teacher's use of persuasive questioning to try to guide the student's analysis of the event and meaning of his reelection. Not using that as the sole cause in my darker mood as the weekend has progressed, Ace captured a gnawing point that had been eating at my attempt last week to "moveon.org" and highlighted Chuck Todd declaring Barack had been open on being a FABULOUSLY LIBERAL! candidate as a way to try to coach the public into thinking he is not lying when he comes after liberties. The fact that my house being only half as underwater as I feared not making me more happy has me worried. There are better things to do than torture you guys with my paens to my anger or round robin ruminations with those that can desipher my babbling and it is my sincere wish not to offend, or anger, or bore, or worry several of the regulars here I enjoy as I peruse the place lurking when able whilst busy. Once long ago I was able to convey more humor and less anger inasmuch as i could make myself understood.. Breitbart said we should strive to be "happy warriors" but I have not been happy politically since probably 2000/2001 right up until 9/11 and my anger has only increased the more the public has not punished the left for their bad behavior. The decision on whether or not to go with a new nation if a national divorce ever happens is over for me, but my next task is trying to decipher whether or not I can make peace with my anger if the right decides that "there is no fight here to make and we cannot divorce to separate because "honor and patriotism." History is a passion of mine, that may border on being a fetish in my darker hours and history tells me that an ostensibly capitalist culture once its conservative movement shifts to tolerance and more efficient managing of the welfare state is doomed to lose its power. It is easy to show several examples of empire's and great powers imploding militarily once the decision is made "butter it is to be in perpetuity!" while frankly only we arguably managed to still gain back power and shift. My fear is that that American public was still taught patriotic appreciation and values even while FDR was collectivizing far too much economic oversight and the current Democrat party will never allow that to be reestablished because they do not strike me as particularly loyal to America so much as the international left intelligenzia. As I said "downer" and I allowed myself to get wound up in a conversation that was rapidly devolving into something I did not want about a point I was not making in a temper I am not wanting to share as much as I do let alone unleash on people I respect. I've given my analysis of what strikes me as our best play, and I am planning to spare you the repetitiveness of my anxiety before I regained my confidence last fall-misplaced though that confidence wound up being. Goodnight, Sven Posted by: sven10077 at January 23, 2013 12:16 AM (LRFds) 447

BTB, both work. I find the LCR357 works well for me, but I have plenty of .45s. You really have to consider your lifestyle when going CCW. Finding either right now may be hard.

Yes, but when the revolver misfires, next pull of the trigger generally gives you a fresh shot, whereas in the semi-auto you have to clear the dud/jam first.

I'm thinking of creating a candidate reality show along the lines of the apprentice. The winner gets the chance to run for senate on the libertarian ticket in their state. Challenges would include SuperPac schmoozing, organizing, constant explanations of how much worse Romney was than Obama, guess that cannabis blend and a Ludwig Von Mises Very Special Ingredient Tasterific Brownie cook off. I'm thinking of calling it The Big Bong Theory.

At the State level there is no chance at this time for additional gun control in Ohio. R's hold both houses and the Governorship. I see a lot of Ruby Ridges before Ohioans would give up their guns. I don't see Ohio Law enforcement supporting federal law to that effect.

In my wheelhouse it's pretty much hardened attitude that US graduates especially of the northeastern liberal arts variety are prima donnas and the reprogramming required is not worth the trouble. My last one turned into an episode of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Some cultures handle the transfer better than others. I'm mostly South America now and they often refuse to admit they don't understand because of the whole machismo thing. My last gig was sub continent and they would literally refuse to admit issues because they were so afraid if they did you wouldn't like them. It literally made me walk out the door one day and never go back. The only question I even bother listening to the answer from an interviewee now is 'Can you weld?' Yes tells me all I need to know about their flexibility and skill set.

I have lost a Ruger P91DC .40, SW 626 .357 and a Makarov 9mm in boating accidents. If I wanted to carry I'd pick the Makorov (being the cheap bastard I am). But never limit yourself to this will be the one and only carry gun I will ever own. Right now revolvers may be the ticket cause they aren't as sexy a year from now you may run across a great deal on that 1911. The gun that saves you is the one you treat well and is on you. Posted by: Buzzsaw That's pretty much what I have done for 10 years. The preferred requirement is some tech knowledge. If some college student was to have the misfortune of meeting me, I'd say to him, "First, study tech: pharma, hard-core IT, or engineering." The 2nd stage is a host stay in the country of your choice and learn the language. Field first, language second. And it's going to be useless in the long-term as economies shift regardless. Hello, once again. Have been awakened by a chirping smoke detector and the battery isn't coming out because who knows how long it's been in there. And if I try to pull the battery out the alarm sounds. I hope the neighbors on either side don't hate me at the moment. According to the manufacturer, this should continue for 7 days. (Will be buying a new one tomorrow.)

@ 512 Mrshad,
I am a bit depressed too that the low information "free crap army" put the SCOAMF failure in again. I use 2 techniques to get out of my funk. 1.) Humor….lol, at the bright side, he can't get elected again! 2.) I try to find enjoyable, and soon to be needed activities to get involved in to take my mind off of it. Buying firearms and ammunition, practicing my marksmanship, digging the moat deeper, adding more barbed wire to the fence and electrifying it, writing my elected officials to keep them on the straight and narrow, sinking a well, stocking up on 'end of days" supplies, putting in gardens and composts, raising chickens, stocking the pond, hunting and fishing. I almost forgot…VERY IMPORTANT, visiting the Moron Horde for my daily dose of common sense. Now I am sure there are a myriad of fun filled, yet useful activities you can get involved in that will take your mind off this deplorable situation and sharpen/ extend your skill set. Similar medical terminology -- http://tinyurl.com/822bffv .
CC -- how many of these reasonably common? I'd guess that it's quite few, but varies from hospital to hospital. One of my chums from High School came really close to working as a diamond cutter, just by circumstance and accident. He had a guy all set up to apprentice him and get him going (he went to CalTech instead in geophysics and ended up at Chevron, IIRC). But the biggest thing about working in that field is contempt for the raw materials.....because if you thought too hard about it, you could never strike the blow. Medicine is like that, too -- if you perpetually second-guess yourself, you can't do the things necessary to help the greatest number of patients to the greatest extent possible. So you're working with the greatest thing imaginable to your customers -- literally life and death -- and you have to go home at night and come to work the next day. As an aside -- for my 40th birthday, my big present to myself was to get serious about a primary-care doctor.
Best. Decision. Ever. I grew up with Kaiser (never see the same doctor twice). I'd previously had a succession of "check-the-box" physicians. Once I had referrals, this doctor warned that I would initially need a thorough physical (which I hadn't had for years). Right out of the gate, I was referred to a sleep specialist and began treatment for humongous levels of sleep apnea.....which I'd had for 20+ years. Right before it got treated, my OSA was so bad that I'd fall asleep in meetings that I'd called and was supposed to lead about topics that I intensely cared about. It was horrible. I'd try to work around it by putting all my arguments in the agenda, but I'd be groggy when it came to discussions. My 40th birthday "whim" ended up as one of the best changes in my life over the last couple of decades. Posted by: cthulhu at January 23, 2013 06:17 AM (kaalw) 563

Hi, cthulu! I am recovering from reading on Breitbart this morning that there is an erotic novel featuring Varack and Michelle Obama.
Aside from the fact that this could more appropriately be classified as science fiction, I am now pondering whether or not the White House commissioned it. Posted by: Miss Marple at January 23, 2013 06:28 AM (GoIUi) 568
What if we started referring to farming as manufacturing?
Seems it'd be one of those "framing" things that the left has gotten so good at. "America's food manufacturers need our support." On the plus side, it's a way to funnel more federal money to red states. On the down side, anything subsidized by the government, we get less of (except Dem voters). FLK was considered a legit abbreviation and diagnosis up to about 10 years ago, and anything GOMER related is attributed to the House of God (which sadly few newer doctors have read). Most of the others I've seen in one time or another but never in any official documentation.

A few lurkers still here, dropping in occasionally to see if the ONT still lives, waiting for Vic...

Tonight the ONT was mostly dead after 1:30 eastern, just limping along since then.

Point made on the Yahoo list: There is never a final political victory, even in armed conflict.
So, supposing we have a civil war. We are still going to have leftists. But, none of this matters. I keep rolling it around and run into the same problem: We will not have more liberty and freedom in this country anytime soon. Not until a political entity at least the size of a city refuses to go along with the enforcement of the expansion of the federal government. Outlaws always end up dead; you can't make a difference if you have to hide your face. We can have Sanctuary Cities that flaunt immigration law with no consequence, but the "conservative" cities still follow all the laws, even the ones tightening the noose.
