ONT - "Hey babe. What are you wearing" Edition [krakatoa]

This is a short fashion ONT. Monday ONTs are for the chicks, I always say.

Which I don't say at all, ever, and instead is simply my way of announcing that the Maetenloch is off doing "trade-shoe, er, show" stuff, and has foisted off this weeks ONT duties onto a motely crew of ruffians, ne'er do wells, butt-pickers, hump-backed northeastern slackjaws, and me.

What sets me apart you ask?

It's the clothes of course. The clothes make the man. And what could be more manly than my current ensemble. (That's franch for totally buff.)

I'm sporting a fashionable layered look: Torn Bruce Lee tshirt, VaTech sweatshirt, and a hoodie. Long underwear, and pajama bottoms, of course. And fluffy slippers.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

Hate me because something along those lines is what I've been working in every day for the past few months. Telecommuting for the win! Of course I'm wearing all that because I'm a cheap bastard, and refuse to turn the heat up over 60 most days.

Alas, the dream withers next week, as I start hitting the road damn near full-time for work. Then I have to dress nicely enough for the various JW Marriott or Renaissance concierge lounges. That means ditching Bruce Lee, and sporting the kind of threads that reflects the sort of goal-setter and dream achiever that tells people "Here is a man that's going places..."

Thanks to the comprehensive genius of Obamanomics, I too am a 99 percenter. I just happen to still be employed, which makes me an approximately 80 percenter. Using the Obamanomical method(TM), that makes me a 179 percenter in total, and should qualify me as a dependent of the state. Right?

Speaking of mathematical fallacies, anyone else suspect that the average gun-grabber's analytical process looks suspiciously like this?

Everything's heard something bad about Brand X's wares on the intertubes. Taurus more than others, but that seems to be a remnant of the 90's as much as anything. If you can't afford a Smith, step down to a Ruger. Can't afford a Ruger? Taurus is there for you. All three have fantastic customer service, and I'm certain you're smart enough to never trust a gun you hadn't put through it's paces first, so you should be fine. Every gun breaks eventually, so don't put too much stock in internet experts - including me. Get some trigger time.

Yeah, it's a tough sell period. The full-custom (e.g. Ed Brown, Wilson, Nighthawk) 1911 market is fine, as the kind of people who can afford those are generally handling the Oconomy decently, and supply is low. The low-end (e.g. RIA and other Filipino marks) is also doing well. The middle is what isn't moving right now, but I'm not worried. I only put it up for sale because the last 10 or so range trips it didn't make the cut. It's no museum piece, so hopefully I can put it in the hands of somebody who will use it like it was intended to be used.

FWIW I am having to fight the urge HARD to buy a Chiappa Rhino.

With a stage 2 trigger job by Chiappa it is a very nice eapon for double taps...muzzle flip is minimal.

About two weeks ago I mentioned how when I took the dog at our office for a walk we he almost caught two mice in the long grass edging the parking lot/picnic table area because the January thaw had flooded the rodents out of their hidy-holes.

Well, last week I got some bad news. Although the landlord had given us permission to keep the dog in our unit, because other tenants had people begin bringing their dogs to work too the landlord decided to ban the doggies.

I guess some weren't being responsible about their dogs (I'd seen poo around that wasn't our dog's for example) so someone spoiled it for everyone else. And to rub salt in the wound on the day I discovered the dog ban I had seen two other dogs in two different industrial/business complexes' units while walking to work.

BUT on Saturday when I went into the office the dog was there after a week of not having seen him and a week of me thinking that I'd probably never see him again! I don't know if it was done with permission or if the dog's owner figured the one day would be okay because most of the units aren't working on the weekend but I at least got to see my buddy again.

I didn't take him out for a mouse-hunting walk because I didn't know his "official" status there although maybe I'll chance it next Saturday if we're both in. He was heartbroken that I wouldn't take him on a walk that he definitely wanted me to take him on because he licked my face (yech! doggie breath) and then began miming him digging in the grass for mice and mimed biting one to let me know, "Hey, don't you remember 11 days ago? When I almost got those two mice? Let's go out again, buddy! I'm sure I can get them this time!" and "You do know I want to go out, don't you? Your momma didn't raise no dummy, I hope."

After the initial slide failures, the 92F became a pretty reliable sidearm. I've put maybe 7k rounds through one and never had a failure to fire or extraction/feed problem. I shot a wide variety of stuff too light 90gr and heavy 148gr rounds, super "hot" +P+ submachine gun ammo, every hollow point available, and it ate everything without complaint.

Check out Kahr 9mm pistols--- I have a PM9 which I like a lot. It's 7+1and for a little gun it has a big bang-- also it's small and concealable-- if I'm out on the bike I have it in an ankle holster

I don't know. I have relatives in TN and in my one week stay I saw four or five different kinds of really fucking big spiders. One big red long legged ones that crawl on the ground, and some even bigger sort of green and brown ones that hung out in the bushes. ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't see any black widows.

plus if you use the custom loads they are experimenting with you can get profound performance from .410 slugs.

I got these specs off the Winchester website. I
compared a .410 bore, 1/4 oz slug and a .45 Colt lead flatnose bullet
250 grains.



.410 - 1800 feet per minute, 788 foot pounds (at muzzle)

.45 - 750 fpm, 312 Ft pounds (at muzzle)



It looks like the .410 has more than twice the power (ft pounds) than
the .45, and it flies over twice as fast. There is a lot more gunpowder
in a shotgun shell.

I remember when all of the above were cheap and available, wish I'd picked up the latter two. Did use my 03 to get a k98, but it's a Russian capture and is just a shooter. Wish reliable ammo was still available - lots of hang-fires with the last batch I bought.

298 247 My first gun was a hi-point 45. I had to get it on short notice with limited financial resources. I still have it and it shoots great. Ugly as hell, but it blows holes in things. Have never disassembled it for a real cleaning either, just the occasional snake job.

Back then, i was glad to have it. Plus, I figured if it failed to fire, I could bludgeon 3-5 attackers to death before I went down.

There might be, but none I've ever seen here in mid-TN. The winters get cold enough that we don't get the crazy big spiders and other assorted nasties like areas closer to the gulf. In high school I worked at a grocery store and was unboxing a gaylord of melons when the biggest spider I've ever seen *jumped* (yes, really) out of the box and ran off. Never did catch it, but it had an abdomen the size of a walnut and was probably 8" end to end. Furry, too. Scared the piss out of us.

Ammo for the Nagants is not a problem much 7.62*54 is fairly plentiful and if you reload has a nice amount of room for custom recipes.

The 8mm Mauser is drying up but the same thing reloading, reloading, reloading....

I do like my Gibbs "hungle carbine" made from the Ishy 2a in 7.62*51mm just don't get too crazy on hotloading the .308 to Win Mag specs

Still anecdotal, kind of doesn't tell you how likely it is you'll get a dud. Ironically, IDPA should be a better test because of less modifications - but then USPA and 3 Gun IME people go through more different guns over time.

Still, tiny compared to the market.

One of the nicest wheel guns I ever shot is the Ruger Single Six my Dad owned--and I inherited. Put brick after brick of .22 through it with never a hitch.

Life's been good on the gun front, found my M-14 last year and just bought a Garand from a buddy of the man I bought the 14 from. So couple those with the 1911 plus the Ithaca and the simple but effective arsenal is complete.

No trouble picking it up and shooting it. I actually find it easier to shoot accurately than smaller 45s.

However, it's not something to carry around every day. It would pull your pants down and if you turn around too fast, you'll probably knock out any children or dogs in your vicinity.

It has never given me any trouble, but all the negative talk out there and my unwillingness to break it open for total cleaning (breaking it open requires a hammer), I don't trust the damn thing entirely. Hi-Point says it is unnecessary to disassemble... but still.

I still keep it around, though. It has been good enough to me that the extra gun laying around is worth more than the $50 I'd get selling it. Plus, I hear great things about their customer service.

Had Obama appointed another Justice prior to this decision (or if he gets another), this would not be a 2nd Amendment victory.

We are now truly at the mercy and whim of the Court. We must be mindful of who wears the robes of the highest Court.

Had there been even 1 less conservative Justice, we would be left to the mercy of the jurisdiction we live in, as to whether we could own a gun, even to protect us from the criminals who obey no rules... including the ones who want to ban weapons.

Today, the debt stands at more than $16 trillion because Obama added more to the debt than all previous presidents COMBINED.

For the first time in U.S. history, our credit rating is reduced, and Fitch is warning they may do it again.

He no longer can blame President Bush, so now he blames the whole of the Republican Party (which, BTW, HAS offered solutions to the nation’s economic crisis).

He repeatedly uses Executive Orders to bypass the Constitutional powers of Congress. See the 23 new "orders" that have Americans buying guns as fast as they can, fearing the loss of the right to own and bear arms.

In the mean-time, he just signed a law granting himself (and his family) lifetime Secret Service protection.

Here midstate, we just had a range open a Tuesday evening IDPA match. The sport is growing rapidly in these parts - I wish I could play, but working 2nd shift means 7:30 a.m. Saturday matches and evening Tuesday matches aren't in the cards. Someday...

USPSA is still a gun game but not concealed carry based


I shoot both, the safety rules are almost the same but the structure is noticeably diffrent

there are 2 IDPA clubs and 3 USPSA clubs. plus one 3 gun club

565 In my defense of the 2nd & 10th earlier tonight, my Brother-In-LawL, the (ghey) lefty (who is nontheless very clever), wants to use the 14th.

I argue that the Constitution and Bill of Rights are VERY clear (to me at least), that they afford the Federal Government ONLY 16 ENUMERATED POWERS. These unique, discrete powers granted to the federal government ALL concern "nationhood".

The Constitution authorizes the feds to regulate in areas of national defense, foreign affairs, keeping interstate commerce regular, establishing a post office, protecting patents and artistic creations, and keeping the nation free.

The areas of health, safety, welfare and morality were NOT delegated to the feds, and were retained by the States.

James Madison described the division of labor between the states and the federal government in the Federalist No. 45: “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the state governments are numerous and indefinite. The powers reserved to the several states will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and property of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the state.”

The Fourteenth Amendment was drafted and narrowly designed to correct a single deficiency – that very real possibility that states might try to deny newly-freed blacks their “inalienable right to liberty.”

The sole intention behind the 14th Amendment was simply to grant recently freed slaves the right of citizenship, and to ensure that they would be treated fairly by the individual states, and would not be denied basic rights of citizens.

The 14th Amendment contains a “Privileges and Immunities” clause, a “Due Process” clause, and an “Equal Protection” clause:

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

So now consider what happened to the First Amendment. The 1st Amendment was intended as a prohibition on Congressional activity ONLY. “Congress shall make no law respecting the Establishment of Religion.”

The amendment was a no-brainer. Clear as day. Right?

The First Amendment was intended to prevent the Federal Government from officially designating one religion over all others as the official national religion, so that there can never be any religious oppression or persecution in this country.

Yet, not only can the Supreme Court read the Amendment incorrectly (it must have somehow missed the clarifying word “Congress”), but it intentionally has chosen to ignore all written works on-point which address its intention and meaning.

Yet now, the Court has no problem, determining that the 14th Amendment requires that religion be taken out of every facet of public life -- in all states; schools must be forcibly integrated; and students are to be bused all over town to achieve "racial equality", and to be forced to mix with students who don’t necessarily share the same commitment to education and social development.

Now we have the misguided, supposed, "law of the land" -- that there is a “wall of separation” between Church and State which not only applies to Congress, but applies to every school, public square, every state town hall meeting, and every local public place and event.

The 14th Amendment did that. And nine Justices...

Almost 200 years of history was undone in less than 40 years. We are at the mercy of the Supreme Court.

I'm beat. And this post took me forever.

The diff in BC between the 168 and 175 SMK is not much.

and windage inside 600 yards in really not too much

But the 175 is the way to go if you want to go past 600 yards.


The angle of the boattail on the 168 makes if go way funky at trans-sonic.

Some ranges will not let you shoot 168SMK's at 1,000 yards


None of the Tactical Rifle guys locally shoot 168's, they shoot 175's or the 208AMAX if they can spin it.

Thanks, Jake. I'm thinking ahead, since my next great hobby adventure is reloading. One of the loads I want to replicate is the USMC XM118LR, since a good friend has a starved M1A decked out in the Sage EBR stock like he used to run in the bad place. Since there's not 400 yards of flat ground where I live, I won't worry about 168 v. 175.

Being a 99% in terms of long-term financial security but a 1% in tastes, I have just returned from the opera. It was a new one, for me anyway (and a relatively new one overall): Florencia en el Amazonas. Very pretty music.

I need something to distract from the destruction of my country.

I have to say, I feel like our best voices consist of a handful of bloggers, writers, and talking heads. Very few people in elected offices who seem to speak my language. And it really feels like most of them inside the Beltway are completely insulated from the destruction of the country. Even the ones on our 'side.' I feel like it's all an academic exercise for them. Kinda hope they choke on the banquets and booze they're all enjoying today.

598 I had a Taurus .357 that had problems with the cylinder freezing up. Somehow, the primers on fired rounds were scraping on the frame as the cylinder turned, eventually locking up as enough fired rounds pushed against the frame. I sent it to Taurus. They made it better, but it still didn't work with certain brands of ammo. I've seen the complaint a lot on gun forums.

Yep, it's the 175 SMK. All the XM118LR is Lake City. Federal offers their Gold Medal in 175, but no specs...since I couldn't pick those up as a Christmas gift, I figured it's time to roll my own (and his if I have a minute).


Have you ever used SMP842? I've read threads where 5.56 and 7.62 reloaders are just gaga over it, but gun / reloading threads are almost always super positive or ultra negative, so grain of salt.

Spelling is becoming a lost art. Awful. Even in professional publications or media.

The other scary thing is that now the younger generation can't even print, forget cursive. A friend showed me something from a 10 year old nephew that was barely legible. And the same happened last month when I bought a gift certificate at a yarn shop. The college-ish aged dude's printing was like a five year olds.

My daughter did not have a t.v. in her room until she was 15 and a phone in her room until she was 26. If she wanted to watch t.v., she had to work with me as to the programming.

The computer was in the den and POS (Parent Over Shoulder) was always a threat to any barred activities.

I don't regret those decisions in the slightest.

Spelling is a byproduct of reading, though if you're reading sources that keep their product under three syllables so their readers can understand it, e.g. Buzzfeed, Slate, et al., you're unlikely to see words enough to know how to spell.
Writing is something you have to do every day. I had wonderful penmanship in 1996 when writing was required. Then came the keyboard and the college and the job, and there went the writing. It's sad, really - I've now landed in a job where I have to write something in ink a few times a day, and have to slow down and make sure my fingers make the letters. The same fingers that can tear down and rebuild anything in front of them, or run a guitar like a house afire struggle to make a squiggle in place of a "g" or a "q", and other letters are just suggested. The times, they are a-changing.

It only gets worse.

This afternoon, I was talking to my 73-(?)-year-old Croatian neighbor about the demise of bookstores. First the big-box stores (Borders, Barnes Noble) came in and crushed the independents, then Borders went foom, now online (Kindle and Nook) is crushing the big box.

Problem is, we've already seen situations where the online version just vanished (IIRC, "Animal Farm" on Kindle.....someone has a heckuva sense of humor), or where a downloaded version said XXX last Thursday....but says YYY today. A book on my shelves won't do that.

People are moving away from printed materials into ebooks or internet lookups....but what was there last week might not exist at all today. What better example of Orwell's "memory hole" could you desire?

I've found that they are nice for reading public domain texts in order to save money, since the public domain stuff is free. If you don't eshewing the e-book reader, you can read it with free software on your computer, phone, ipad, &c.

But, then, when I was 15-years-old and on a train to Munich, I had asked about politically incorrect jokes. Another passenger, whose native tongue was German, was passing the time with me by mangling each other's language....and I'd asked about who was the default slow, dim-witted foil for jokes. He said "Silesians". So we spent some time telling each other jokes where I translated then-popular US "Polack" jokes to "Silesian" ones.

Fact is, the entire world has some other region that is reputed to be dimwits -- that this same group are held to be abnormally cunning and clever by some other group is just the way things go. A couple of years ago, in Saint Petersburg, I was amused to find that EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of Hee-Haw could be translated directly to Russian by substituting Ukrainians for rednecks, hillbillies, or hicks.
