The President's Hyper-Partisan Inaugural Address

Many commentators -- on Fox -- noticed how partisan the inaugural address was. The typical inaugural speaks in the broadest themes about the core of America, those things which are not generally disputed; this speech was more like a State of the Union, with a partisan political agenda and Designated Villains.

See, for example, Joel Pollack's reaction at Breitbart:

Throughout his address, the President maintained his voice in a near-shout. This was not an historic address, a reflection on a moment in history; it was an exhortation to political action, in contrast to the political reality of a divided Washington, in defiance of the profound economic challenges still facing the American people.

It was a declaration of political war on individual liberty.

Even lefty columnist Eugene Robinson acknowledge it, stating "this might have been the most progressive speech he's given as President," and noting that the heavy implication was "there's more to come." Joe Biden further threatened:

“I want you to know something else about this guy Barack Obama — he’s just getting started,” Biden added. “He’s just getting started.”

Obama has always considered himself the Anti-Reagan -- he would not only undo the Reagan coalition and the Reagan era, but do what Reagan did but for the left, create a semi-permanent liberal majority.

Obama is on the way to accomplishing that, but for one thing: Reagan's presidency was a great success. Obama's is not. Success tends to attract fans; that's why people ask celebrities for autographs and read biographies of superstar athletes and innovators like Steve Jobs.

Obama has had many political successes, but he's had no non-political successes except for the assassination of Osama bin Ladin (and that of course was built on the earlier efforts of Bush, and was a longstanding bipartisan goal).

There is nothing he's done yet that a non-political person, or someone opposed to his politics, can point at and say "That's a good thing."

He won't seal any kind of deal until he manages that, and I don't think he will. The trajectory of socialism is failure. And yes, Obama is a socialist. And so history says he will fail.

Buzzfeed's Ben Smith Thinks Obama Can Be Reagan Absent Any Actual Accomplishments... For liberals, Obama's unabashed liberalism is enough.

Not so for non-liberals -- and by non-liberals, I don't just mean conservatives. I mean the great swathe of less political voters who aren't ideological enough to have strong opinions one way or the other, but who can tell the difference between a recession and an expansion.

So, contra the liberals, no, Obama's not Reagan yet.

This may shock liberals, but Being Very Liberal is not in and of itself an accomplishment. They themselves believe that it is an accomplishment -- a great deal of their own self-worth is based on who they vote for every two or four years -- but the rest of us think that accomplishments are different from mere beliefs and bleatings.

It doesn't matter if he's a failure and, in fact, low-level black politicians love this idea that even though they might be stupid, corrupt or incompetent, they are important.

And so, blacks and some guilty non-blacks will justify placing this epic failure into a position of responsibility for that reason. Even though being a minority isn't a barrier, it's a leg up.

And the reason they don't is because the media constantly pushes this argument, and then promotes bits of story here and there that appear to confirm this argument.

As long as they have sole control over what gets on television, the Media (New York and Los Angeles Liberal Democrat Union Members) will continue helping Democrats win elections.

82 Remember the late 1990s?

Remember how, despite the fact that the economy was going gangbusters, the country got tired of Bill Clinton?

Remember how even the liberal media couldn't resist running stories about "Clinton fatigue"? Despite Clinton winning re-election by a huge margin with high approval ratings?

The economy will not be going gangbusters for the next four years. Obamanomics is not Clintonomics.

Obama won re-election, but not with high approval numbers nor by a huge margin. Lowest in history for a re-elected President, actually.

He's a lame duck. And Obama fatigue will set in sooner than you think.

Right now, those opposed to Obama need to think like insurgents. They need to keep their powder dry and pick their fighting ground carefully.

And we need to FOCUS ON THE SENATE FOR 2014. An election that is less than two years away. If the GOP take and hold that ground, the Obama agenda stops dead right there. Contained damage.

For the Senate in the 2014 cycle, I recommend we nominate a full slate of fundamentalist retards who will tell the voters that rape pregnancies are something that "God intends". Since that messaging worked so brilliantly in the 2012 cycle. And no, not that I'm bitter about that needless loss or anything.

While I think the country as a whole has taken a step back, true conservative leaders have risen up so maybe we are in better shape, like Reagan rising from the disasterous political defeat of Goldwater.

Something very like the Tea Party WAS forming during the Clinton Presidency. By 1994, people were fed up with Bill Clinton, and wanted his ass on a stick. Political unrest was growing and people were becoming more confrontational about government and specifically about Clinton. Then that fucking idiot blew up the Federal building.

Not only did the Shell Shocked Clinton and the Shell Shocked Media find their voice, it gave them the opportunity to paint all opposition to Government as tantamount to terrorism. The forces that were building towards Clinton's ouster were set back and scattered to the winds, because no one wanted to be associated with what McVeigh had done.

I'm in the same boat, man. The reaction to Cuomo's gun-grab here has people who never even thought about owning a gun scurrying to get permits while they still can.

My decidedly non-wingnutty ex-gf just messaged me that she's holding pistol permit classes at her house, and already has over a dozen folks signed up for the first session.

171 The country that voted for O deserves 0. America needs a time of consequence. For so long we have been fat, happy, and spoiled and this last election shows it. Let the dear leader get what he wants fiscally and then watch it all implode. Maybe after a total collapse we can have a chance to get rid of entitlements, move to a flat tax, and focus on the basics that the Feds are supposed to do without all that extra vote buying crap.

Or we could have a total collapse and end up with the USSA.

172 I'm much more "scared" of the electorate than I am Obama. Even 10 years ago, not only would Obama's style of politics have gone nowhere, Democrats would be publicly distancing themselves from his radicalism. but now, just enough are willing to go along that this coalition is able to squeak through wins. Obama's political victories I think are due more to being lucky with how demographics have changed than actually winning hearts and minds.

My guess is Obama will leave office similar to how Dubya left office, but the media will make sure to give him FAR more favorable coverage, but it will still be some combination of Carter and Bush. I don't see Obama leaving office like Reagan did where he was beloved and had really moved the nation to a new type of era. It will be a narrow victory on dumb issues like skin color and free birth control.

Now the future of the movement and party is with Rubio/Paul/Cruz/Ryan. The latter being much more principled. Its up to us to make sure they stay principled and don't get sucked into the Washington way of doing business. The status quo and return to the Bush years will get us nowhere. Bush was the final legs of the 20th century entitlement model. Obama has hastened its undoing.

Clinton was "defaulted" (He wasn't elected. Ross Perot split the majority. Clinton just had the highest plurality of the stupid.) not "elected" in 1992. In 1994, the Republicans kicked the dog shit out of the Democrats, and were about to seriously hurt Bill Clinton, and possibly impeach and remove him.
In 1995, just as they were flexing their muscles, the Republicans had to face media accusations of extremism and hate after McVeigh blew up the Federal building. What started out as a wining coalition intent upon confronting excesses of governance, ended up being attacked incessantly from all sources of the Media. Clinton recovered his voice, and went on to beat Bob Dole in the Presidential election of 1996.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and his brother, Rep. Joaquin Castro, see a lot of blue sky in Texas' future.

Very blue.

The twin brothers predicted to a national TV audience Sunday that Republicans will lose their iron grip on Texas — that within two presidential election cycles, the currently "red" state will shift from a GOP stronghold to being dominated by Democrats.

On CBS' "Face the Nation," the prominent Texas Democrats also said that President Barack Obama and Congress should tackle the economy, education, immigration reform and gun laws this year.

"It's changing. It's going to become a "purple state" then a "blue state" because of the demographics, because of the population from folks coming from outside Texas," Julian Castro said.

Joaquin Castro agreed, but added that "it's going to take a lot of work from Democrats to lay the infrastructure for change — we are very busy working on that now."

Unfortunately, you couldn't have picked a worse time. We're now in second term territory where TFG doesn't have to hold back, and that means all sorts of uncertainty with respect to gun control laws. 239 When they heard that the White House would use the District’s pointed “taxation without representation” license plates on presidential limousines, city leaders called friends and reporters to share the news — and made plans to take photos of the plates during Monday’s inaugural parade.

District leaders originally felt as if a special crush had just called them for a second date. They wondered whether President Obama’s decision could be a breakthrough in the District’s decades-long struggle for more autonomy.

“It’s a symbol of hope,” said Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D), who added that he will “always remember” the “800-002” digits assigned to the presidential plate.

243 The twin brothers predicted to a national TV audience Sunday that Republicans will lose their iron grip on Texas — that within two presidential election cycles, the currently "red" state will shift from a GOP stronghold to being dominated by Democrats.
------
As a Texan, this is a big fear. And I'm sure it will happen somewhat. States never stay the same, particularly ones that are growing as fast as Texas. But I don't think it inevitable. Yes, people are moving to Texas from blue states, but many are cultural republicans (as many liberals will choose to live in blue cities) or business owners (natural republicans).

Further, Texas government is structurally different in that it meets once every other year. With no income tax, it makes it harder to prioritize spending. Texas also has a love for using its natural resources, and hard to see that changing anytime soon. Meaning, environmentalists will have a hard time making inroads.

So Texas will likely stay red for a while, particularly so long as Democrats are the party of the environmentalists.

I'm not too worried about the Castro's. They strike me as being lightweight. I'll take Ted Cruz agains them any day.

The only way I see that happening is enough blue states who want the Constitutional limitations gone join enough red States who want additional limitations imposed join together in calling a convention, that, once started reveals the uncrossable rift between states and they by 3/4 agreement agree to completely deconstitute and all states are set adrift to form new unions as they see fit.

This is just Rawls (Mostly as interpreted by Daniels) twisted into...well crap.
Daniels always saw "Freedom" as equivalent to opportunities. So if luck conspires against me and prevents me from say...becoming a doctor, I have lost opportunity (and thus freedom.)
And so, he believed that we should (as a community/grovernment) provide resources to ensure everyone had equal opportunity (and thus freedom.)
He was a "smart idiot." Smart in that he defends his position well. Idiot in that he never understood that to accomplish that you had to restrict other people's freedoms even more (i.e. through taxes.)
Freedom to fail is never considered in his theory (just as Rawls couldn't accept that people aren't always granted equal skill in all things.)

270 234 Sven,

I did say "Perot voters," not "Perot himself." Many of his positions and ideas were stupid, and he likely cost Bush the election in '92.

Many people voted for Perot not necessarily because they liked him, or thought he was necessarily correct on the issues, but because he spoke directly and bluntly on matters everyone else was afraid to talk about. He was on the stage with two liars - one about not raising taxes and the other about, well, everything.

He stood up and said "This is crazy; we can't keep doing this anymore." I see a lot of that in the current Tea Party. I'm simply noting that what a lot of people were expressing by voting for Perot is being expressed today in the Tea Party.

2. He was much more of a pragmatist than an ideologue. Often, he could be counted on to do the right thing, if only because it benefited him politically ("The era of big government is over," welfare reform).

The Liberal Party (aka. the Natural Governing Party of Canada, or so they like to say), is having a leadership contest at the moment. Among the people running for the leadership is Pierre Trudeau's son, who has nothing to recommend him beyond his family tree, and a lady who was once Pierre Trudeau's mistress. Hat tip to Kate of Small Dead Animals for that factoid.

If Trudeau the younger wins the Canadian media's slobbering will make the U.S. media's slobbering over Obama look like the work of amateurs. Right now the only thing that keeps Harper in charge is the vote-splitting on the left (Liberals, NDP, Greens, and Bloc Quebecois), but someone like Trudeau the younger with the media behind him could change that and he could eke out a small majority government.

361 The only things that Clinton did that were...'good for the country'...were things that the Republicans in Congress forced him to do.

He was good at taking credit for all those things that he fought tooth-and-nail against.

Clinton actively engaged in 'outsourcing' jobs to other countries.
He sent Ron Brown on taxpayer provided junkets, all around the world...to encourage US companies to move their operations there.

Clinton kicked off the Housing Bubble, by encouraging banks to make subprime loans.
And since Citibank got sued by the JEF on behalf of Acorn...the banks were scared shitless not to make loans to people who couldn't afford them.

Clinton weakened our military...calling it the "Post Cold War Savings"...and led to us having to strengthen it, fast, after 9/11.
Whenever you have to get something done...fast...it always costs more.
Which led to increasing the deficit in the Bush years.

People tend to forget what a shitbird Clinton was.

The idea that a larger Hispanic population is going to turn Texas blue has been the hope of Dems for years. I'll agree, it's not *as* red as the rest of the country thinks, but liberals do not take into account:

1. Net migration from Mexico into the U.S. has been declining.

2. The Hispanic population in Texas is more conservative than elsewhere.

3. People are moving to Texas from other parts of the U.S. as well as Mexico. An annoying thing about liberals is that when they move after having f'ked up a state, they don't change their voting patterns which f'ked up the prior state to begin with. However, this doesn't seem to be a problem yet when it comes to immigration to Texas from the rest of the U.S.

And they have been quite remarkable in their ability to ignore the dissonance between his ideology and the results of his policies. They have propagandists like Krugman who allow them to pretend that things like the Stimulus were not failures of policy, but at a certain point the chasm between promise and performance should be apparent.

I suppose the silver lining is that this election reminds me so much of 2004 (inverted) which was the beginning of the end for the GOP. As long as people don't simply become acclimated to the "new normal" in the economy, I foresee that Democrats are likely to be very unpopular in 2014 and 2016.

"In several places in Obama’s address he makes the case that government is what, in effect, gives you freedom. That is what he is driving at when he says near the beginning of the speech, 'history tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they’ve never been self-executing. That while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by his people here on earth.' And the way you secure those freedoms, Obama says over and over again, is through more government efforts and programs. "

They themselves believe that it is an accomplishment -- a great deal of their own self-worth is based on who they vote for every two or four years -- but the rest of us think that accomplishments are different from mere beliefs and bleatings.

This is because despite everything, despite the fact that they own the gov't(and face a lily-liver opposition), despite the fact they own the culture, despite the fact the they control approximately 95% of all news sources -

Progressives still see themselves as put upon underdogs. The valiant subversive underground always fighting against the eeeeeevil overlords.

Because every. single. one. of their beliefs runs counter to reality.

Thus they fail.

Thus they must ever fight against the conspiracy of their own incompetence creating their inevitable failure.

The West Coast gets California, which still is one of the world's largest economies, the NE gets NYC which is the financial center of the world, and Middle America gets the plains, as well as the natural resources in the Dakotas, Texas and the Rocky Mountains.

The media (Liberal Democrats disguised as reporters and entertainers) are the enablers of Liberal governance. They keep distorting the truth in such a way as to make the good guys look evil, and the evil guys look good.

Till we come up with an effort to kneecap them, we are not going to win. Conservatives have to create alternative and popular alternatives to liberal news and entertainment. We can't just talk at people, we have to inform them while we entertain them.

Should right/left differences become untenable and irreconcilable, I strongly doubt a split-up would occur along state boundaries. Just as Lincoln said regarding the pro-slavery/abolitionist divisions during the first (and hopefully only) Civil War, we'll be all one thing or all another. Further, I doubt your divorce analogy holds up, either. You act as if there would be two adults in the room, calmly discussing division of property. Ever been divorced yourself? Amicable divorces are the stuff of myth and legend: often talked about but never seen or experiencedfirsthand.

568 Ace, Obama has accomplished a lot, it's just not stuff you think highly of.

The FSA, on the other hand, thinks he has done a lot. They like the part about getting to stay on parents health plan until 26. They like the student loan credit. They like unemployment forever - or at least until you can roll on to SS disability, which is (apparently) easier than ever to qualify for. They like Obama phones. They like expanded Medicare and CHiP. They like the millions upon billions upon trillions of slush fund money, out there rolling around for the agencies to blow on crap we don't need (but that the well-connected have figured out how to tap into). They like how easy Obama has made it for low- to no-information individuals to get on the dole (I heard a commercial on how to get on CHiP and how to get an Obama phone just on my drive in to work). They hear they're getting free health care and free contraception (whether they understand that "free" means "paid for by somebody, just maybe not you" is anyone's guess).

Even those who aren't actively a part of the FSA THINK that Obama has done a lot. They think he has defeated a bunch of evil conservatives who would GASPdemand that they take responsibility for their actions and pay their own way. The last thing an Obama voter wants is for some conservative - like their PARENTS, for heaven's sake - to tell them that they are not behaving morally - or worse, make them feel guilty or bad about themselves. A few are under the impression that Obama has saved them from "greedy corporations," whatever that means.

What I see that Obama has done is convert "envy" from one of the seven deadly sins into a governing philosophy. Now that the leader of the free world has told the masses that it's not only OK to covet what the top of the heap has,and not onlythat it's not their fault that they don't have all the same things, but that what the top of the heap has belongs to everybody ("you didn't build that"), I think he's fundamentally changed the American psyche in a way that's probably not fixable. Genie, bottle, you know the rest.

All it will take is someone on the right who's "cool" and who connects with people. I thought Romney actually had that ability, based on stories from people who actually know him. What he didn't have was someone to help him find his way around the media directly to the American people (I'm looking at you, sucky campaign staffers).

Frankly it's going to take someone younger and more technologically savvy. Rubio springs to mind as someone who can actually connect with people; I heard him on Levin's show years ago and was impressed at how easygoing he seemed. Ryan, on the other hand, looked like a deer in the headlights during the debates. I could have done better than that.

Kasich used to be able to talk to people on camera, but I haven't seen him "perform" in a while. Don't know enough about Rand Paul to speculate.

572 BTW I was 10 when Reagan ran for president. He made people hopeful and want to be part of the Norman Rockwell/Horatio Alger Amercia again, after the debauchery and debacle that were the 1970's. Reagan sweeps in and preppy clothes (modestly dressed women) makes a comeback. Go back and look at any teen movie from the 1980's - even Fast Times - and outside of the bathing suits, you will be shocked at how covered up girls were. It can be done with the right guy to inspire the public.

573 Oh and Michael J. Fox is the most beloved guy on TV - a kid who is a financial whiz, making money. Second most beloved? Working, being responsible, being moral, not taking crap that isn't yours, not expecting other people to pay your way ... all themes of the TV shows I watched in the 1980's (with the notable exception of Fantasy Island, which I watched every other Saturday night during a 3 year babysitting gig, which was about getting Mr. Roarke to give you free sh*t; and Dallas, which involved one lying, cheating jackhole that you loved to hate. Bobby, on the other hand, worked for everything.).

Don't you understand that the "fairness" that Obamacare put into place, disrupting the private health insurance market, giving amnesty to illegal aliens, shouting about gay rights, passing any kind of gun control laws, giving tons of money to "new energy" companies, even if they go bankrupt, ramping up food stamps, taxing rich people, more and more government hand outs, and on and on and on and on....These are what liberals consider the ultimate accomplishments.

Don't you get that? What do you think liberals would do, given free reign? This is it. This is a toned down version of it, but this is it, baby. This IS accomplishment.

580 Reagan's presidency? Monumental success.
ubama's 'presidency'? Unmarked grave.

581 If Obama actually gets us out of Afghanistan I will give him credit for it. I don't think he will, but it's the only thing I can imagine him doing that I could commend him for.

True. The Studios made overtly
pro-American/pro-family/pro-religion movies for a mass audience. I
seriously doubt that "Going My Way" or "It's a Wonderful Life" could
find their way to the big screen today.

For fucks sakes, 'Its a Wonderful Life' could have easily have been named 'It Takes A Village'.
Hollywood has never done us any favors.

583 I'm too angry and upset at that speech to give it even the careless "Eh, suckmydick" it requires.

584 "Preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action." -BHO Inaugural

Is anyone paying fucking attention?

585 It's not just being liberal is sufficient, but being black is sufficient.

586 Michael Steele probably voted for TFG for
same reason Colin Powell did.
Steele sucked as GOP chairman & he isn't
doing anything now to help republicans.

TFG that has hid Saul Alinsky politics has let
Them out now that he was reelected.
I say a F you to all Obama voters.

587 What is the belly aching about? The fools who told us Romney was the ideal candidate caused this. Those who stand for nothing will shallow anything. So open wide you clowns.

This is what you desired and worked for.

588 The President failed to reach out to the Republican Party which has spent the last 4 years refusing to respond when he reaches out. I wonder what color the sky is in their version of reality.
