What we talk about when we talk about DOOM

DOOOOM

Walter Russel Mead has been beating "death of the blue model" drum pretty hard for the past year or so, and here are three recent pieces that deserve a mention: Illinois’s Blue Robin Hoods Stealing from the Young to Give to the Old; The Gray Lady Confirms Blue Civil War; Life After Blue.

Yeah, I'd like the New York Stock Exchange, please. And...I guess a milkshake. And fries.

A primer on contract law in Middle Earth.

THIS is how you say "screw you" to the taxman without going to jail. Petty revenge is sometimes the best we can do.

Teh Krugman announces that our financial problems are "already, to a large degree, solved". Monty declares that Teh Krugman's head is, to a large degree, roughly the same size and shape as Sputnik. Spherical, but quite pointy at parts. (That was offsides, wasn't it? He'll be cryin' himself to sleep tonight on his huge pilla.)

And while we're on the topic of problems that were supposedly solved but are just as big a disaster as ever: Greece asks Europe to please send more money.

I've long said that one of the biggest stories of the 21st century will be the demographic and economic implosion of Japan. China will be eyeing the Japanese closely to spot weakness, and the Chinese themselves face an unprecedented demographic and fiscal crunch soon. There's a lot of potential for bad things to happen in that part of the world.

California is boned: Moody's new pension rules could immediately bankrupt six counties. Or, rather, the new rules would make it clear that at least six counties are already bankrupt. If states and municipalities had to adhere to the same accounting rules as businesses do, two-thirds of the damned country would be declared bankrupt.

Inigo Montoya to Governor Moonbeam: You keep using the word "balanced". I do not think it means what you think it means.

Wait, wait, wait...I thought the Chinese were supposed to be bailing us out!

The Fed "underestimated" the 2007-2008 financial crisis in much the same way that George Armstrong Custer "underestimated" the forces arrayed against him at Little Big Horn.

I never "confirmed" it but I saw on a tape that a Communist by the name of Israel Cohen wrote about this as a tool in a book published in 1912 titled "A Racial Program for the 20th Century".
Read into the congressional record on 6/7/1957. Pg. 7653

We must realize that one of our party's most powerful weapons is racial tension......While inflaming the negro minority against the whites, we will endeavour to instill in the whites a guilt complex for the exploitation of the negros.

41 Some good news for the day:

Nicholas Oresko, oldest living Medal of Honor winner celebrates his 96th birthday today:

Master Sergeant Oresko's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

M/Sgt. Oresko was a platoon leader with Company C, in an attack against strong enemy positions. Deadly automatic fire from the flanks pinned down his unit. Realizing that a machinegun in a nearby bunker must be eliminated, he swiftly worked ahead alone, braving bullets which struck about him, until close enough to throw a grenade into the German position. He rushed the bunker and, with pointblank rifle fire, killed all the hostile occupants who survived the grenade blast. Another machinegun opened up on him, knocking him down and seriously wounding him in the hip. Refusing to withdraw from the battle, he placed himself at the head of his platoon to continue the assault. As withering machinegun and rifle fire swept the area, he struck out alone in advance of his men to a second bunker. With a grenade, he crippled the dug-in machinegun defending this position and then wiped out the troops manning it with his rifle, completing his second self-imposed, 1-man attack. Although weak from loss of blood, he refused to be evacuated until assured the mission was successfully accomplished. Through quick thinking, indomitable courage, and unswerving devotion to the attack in the face of bitter resistance and while wounded, M/Sgt. Oresko killed 12 Germans, prevented a delay in the assault, and made it possible for Company C to obtain its objective with minimum casualties.

Well done, sir and a happy birthday and many more in good health.

The Lesbian and Gay Band Association, the country's first openly gay marching band, will be among the school and military bands strutting down Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday as part of President Barack Obama's second inaugural parade.

The four songs the band will perform were selected for their significance to America, the Obama administration and the gay community.

They will play a combination of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Simple Gifts," a Shaker tune. Also on the playlist: "Give Me Everything (Tonight)" by Miami rapper Pitbull, who was active in Obama's campaign; "Edge of Glory," by Lady Gaga, who identifies as bisexual; and "Tonight" from "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein, who struggled with his homosexuality.

With music selections resolved, all that remained was to settle on a uniform. Four years ago, band members were clad in black shoes, slacks and beret, with thin silver sateen jackets. Due to the cold, however, many members layered warmer clothing under their jackets. A fashion no-no.

"A lot of people were not happy about the way we looked," Begley said. "Some people said we looked like the Michelin Man, or foil-wrapped baked potatoes."

New uniforms — and fundraising to cover their $8,000 cost — were painstakingly debated. The band opted for black shoes and slacks, with two-tone purple over black jackets. Capping it off: a black Australian cowboy hat and snowy plume. The letters LGBA are emblazoned on the jackets' back.

"The look is very sharp, but it wasn't to the point of looking flamboyant," Begley said. "Purple's a very gay color. We wanted to look gay, but we didn't want a set of boas."

Being homo wasn't Leonard Bernstein's only struggle; evidently so was his musical ability or lack thereof. Rumors persist that many of his compositions were actually ghost-written, most notably "Candide."

And as for the Inaugural Parade, it would be fitting if the paraded like they don in San Francisco on Gay Pride day, dressed as the tooth fairy and fellating passersby openly in the street.

Top Aide: Obama Seeks To Split Republican Party Into Warring Factions Before 2014 Midterm Elections…

Divide and conquer.

Via Daily Caller:

President Barack Obama’s top political aide used an Inauguration Day interview to sketch out a provocative political strategy intended to split the Republican Party in time to impact the 2014 midterm elections.

“The barrier to progress here in many respects, whether it is deficits, measures to help economy, immigration, gun safety legislation … is [that] there are factions here in Congress, Republicans in Congress, who are out of the mainstream,” White House advisor David Plouffe said on CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley.”

“We need more Republicans in Congress to think like Republicans in the country who are seeking compromise, seeking balance,” he claimed.

Algeria: Two Canadian Jihadists Found Among Dead Al-Qaeda Fighters Who Stormed Natural Gas Plant…

Better there than Toronto or Montreal.

Via Irish Times:

Algerian forces have found the bodies of two Canadian Islamist fighters after a bloody siege at a desert gas plant, a security source said today, as the death toll reached at least 80 after troops stormed the complex to end the hostage crisis.

Algerian prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal is expected to give details today about the siege near the town of In Amenas, which left American, British, French, Japanese, Norwegian, Filipino and Romanian workers dead or missing.

Much remains unclear about events after the jihadists staged the attack last Wednesday. However, an Algerian newspaper said they had arrived in cars painted in the colours of state energy company Sonatrach but registered in neighbouring Libya, a country awash with arms since Muammar Gadafy’s fall in 2011.

The Algerian security source told Reuters that documents found on the bodies of the two militants had identified them as Canadians, as special forces scoured the plant following Saturday’s bloody end to the crisis.

Veteran Islamist fighter Mokhtar Belmokhtar claimed responsibility for the attack on behalf of al Qaeda, and an official Algerian source has said the militants included people from outside the African continent, as well as Arabs and Africans.

DC Officials Lower Estimates Of Turnout For Inaugural

Via Fox News:

District of Columbia officials have lowered their turnout estimate for Monday’s presidential inauguration.

The district’s homeland security director, Chris Geldart, said Sunday that officials now expect between 500,000 and 700,000 people to attend. That’s fewer than the 600,000 to 800,000 people initially anticipated.

The estimates are based in part on the number of charter buses arriving in the city, as well as the number of hotel and restaurant reservations.

Geldart says the lowered crowd estimate isn’t changing any of the security preparations or planning.

For President Barack Obama’s first swearing-in in 2009, 1.8 million people packed the National Mall.

Democratic Virginia Lawmaker Who Waved Around AK-47 During Anti-Gun Speech On Floor Had Prior Assault, Death Threat In Past

Via The Daily Caller:

A Virginia lawmaker who drew gasps from his colleagues when he brandished a borrowed AK-47 during an anti-gun speech Thursday was found guilty in 2002 of committing a vicious 1999 assault, was sanctioned for legal misconduct while prosecuting a rape case, spent six months in jail for contempt of a federal court, and saw his law license revoked in 2003.

Democratic Delegate Joseph Morrissey brought the rifle to the floor of the House of Delegates to demonstrate how easy it is to carry firearms in Virginia. Republican Delegate Todd Gilbert interrupted Morrissey’s speech to ask him to remove his finger from inside the gun’s trigger-guard — a basic gun-safety practice.

“I don’t think you should be able to possess an assault rifle,” Morrissey told ABC News on Friday.

But while Morrissey introduced a gun-control bill Thursday aimed at reducing criminal violence in Virginia, he has a history that involves physical violence of another kind.

Obama Ousts Another General, This Time, The Head Of Central Command

Another general ousted, this time a Marine legend. It’s almost as if Obama wants to kick out those who might question.

Via WFB:

“Word on the national security street is that General James Mattis is being given the bum’s rush out of his job as commander of Central Command, and is being told to vacate his office several months earlier than planned,” reports veteran national security correspondent Thomas E. Ricks.

It now appears likely that Gen. Mattis, a Marine Corps legend, will leave his post as head of America’s most important combatant command in March, several months earlier than planned. Ricks continues:

obama and his politburo pals are coming after our money and our Military. It's gonna be a War the next 2 years and ya better pick sides and stock up on your supplies.

228 That was a fine read doc.
And don't worry Billy Bob. If you average Seamus' IQ with mine it ends up around a hundred so we're good.

News from the stepdaughter, a rising 1st Looie in the Free Shit Army, via the missus last night.

Apparently, she broke up with the incumbent boyfriend du jour after the usual two year hitch. No problemo, though, because she devoted time over the holidays to auditioning the next chump for two years in the sack with her. Honesty - it's what the FSA knows best how to lecture about to the rest of us.

Oh, and she's talking about leaving Oakland, CA, where ahe has not been employed in any gainful fashion for the last two years for a triumphal return to here in the East. She believes that there is an art school out here, somewhere, that is just dying to offer her a professorship. If only she isn't required to get out of bed before noon.

Bottom drawer and you were standing up at the time too I suppose.

It was too horrific an experience to attempt any bragging.

233 Nice letter, Doc. I am surprised still when otherwise smart and educated people react so emotionally to aberrations like this. Doctors, of all people, are supposed to know better than to try to draw broad conclusions from isolated events.

234 The guy with the $14K in change property tax payment reminds me of a link my daughter sent me once: a guy had a ticket to pay, disputed it and lost, and showed up to pay his fine in dollar bills...each folded into an origami pig, and nesteled in neat rows in a Dunkin' Donuts box!

235 Looks like Walter Russell Meade has made the most detailed straw man ever.

I'll bet he has a log cabin built entirely out of toenail clippings in his house, and maybe several ships in bottles.
