16 With all of the shit that is going on, I still feel fortunate. A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with a degenerative neurological condition similar to Parkinsons. At 60 years old, he will probably be spending the rest of his time in a nursing home. Always in great health and a person you could count in any occasion. Fishing, golfing, playing with his grand kids. His wife is devastated. This was not how they had planned their retirement.

Not wanting to be a downer. Just remember, it could always be worse.

47 Zero Dark Thirty is a great fucking movie. And I say this not just because it strongly, STRONGLY implies that:

1) Enhanced interrogation works
2) Obama hamstrung us
3) Obama's sole contribution to the effort was to say "OK."
4) George Bush didn't lie about WMD, he got bad intel.
5) Obama hamstrung us
6) Bleeding hearts for the Gitmo detainees got our people killed.
7) Obama hamstrung us

Oddly, the only weak link was Jessica Chastain. I heard raves about her performance, but it was barely servicable.

Anyone that uses internet social networking as a substitute for actual social interaction is setting themselves up for some form of fraud.

The only question is the degree to which you invest emotionally or financially.

Younger people that don't have life experience that predates these sites don't have the requisite context or suspicion in many cases.

TSG had pretty good evidence that this kid was set up.

But ask me if I give a shit, and I'll have an entirely different response.

That's
the best description I've heard yet of the new 'Vette. My theory was
the styling dept started at the front and ran out of money at the rear,
hence the non-original ass-end.

Here's the best description I've seen by a commenter on the Top Gear website

It's Frankenstein's monster. A parts bin nightmare. It's got the Viper's grill, Evora's profile and windows, the Ferrari's headlights, the Camaro's taillights, the Chrysler 300's dash and steering wheel, the McLaren MP4's parking break, the 458's cluster, etc, etc. It feels like one of those contests where you win a prize for guessing where all the pieces should go. And for God's sake - 106 horsepower LESS than the Camaro that costs less. Really? Awful to the power of ten.

Clarkson didn't say that, but when it comes up for review in the new season, he'll likely say the same thing

1 cup simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar)
2+ cups rum
2 cups club soda
4 limes, halved
1 metric fucktonne fresh mint leaves (70-100 leaves)
2 cups blueberries (optional)

Add mint, simple syrup to pitcher. Muddle until mint smells all minty. Squeeze limes into pitcher.

At this point, add blueberries if you want, muddle slightly.

Add rum, stir well. If you added blueberries, let it sit for an hour or so, until it gets infused.

Fill highball glass with ice, mix booze mixture and club soda 50/50.

Feel free to screw around with the proportions if you like things mintier or limey or whatever.

The trouble with all of these family friends and family members coming forward now to say he didn't know about it and it was on someone else is that we know that that community is very tight-knit and we're told that his draft position is going to be affected by this story.

Personally, I don't see why his draft position should be affected -- as long as the NCAA establishes that he wasn't being blackmailed and that that did not affect the BCS.

I'm nursing a small hangover. We went to a bar I played in 12 years ago. Heard another classic rock band. The youngest member was my friend, the drummer, in his early '40's. They were really good. The lead singer looked to be in his fifties, and could sing Zeppelin, the early stuff, real well. My band needs practice...

Ran into a girl I haven't seen in 10 years who runs all the non-band stuff they do there, gave her a card, and might wind up with a gig out of it. B'Gal thought when she came up and hugged me that she might've been an ex-GF. It took several minutes to convince her otherwise.

Trust the bioethicist. They're going to hound him anyway. Many states are passing laws that you can't override a person's "yes" answer. But no answer is always seen as an opening.

192 off topic, but from yahoo news: total garbage, and I thought worth a long quote:

Presidential terms are measured by sweeping laws and stirring events, but legacies are about enduring ideas. The one Barack Obama has in mind will drive most everything he tries to do in the next four years: assuring that America is a place where anyone can make it.

There is no moonshot here, no call to end tyranny in our time.

What Obama wants written in the first paragraph of history is that he helped deliver a better life for the people struggling in the richest nation on earth.

His second-term agenda amounts to a wish list in support of that core idea, and this time, he is freer to define the issues.

Obama wants an immigration law that would deal firmly but compassionately with millions of illegal residents; an economic model that demands more money from the rich to shrink the debt; a tax system that is fairer and simpler for families; and a bigger emphasis on education and made-in-America energy.

The old problem of gun violence is suddenly on the list now, too, but only after an elementary school massacre led Obama into days of reflection. He concluded that the country is failing its people in another fundamental way, by not keeping even its children safe.

This is the playbook of a Democrat who thinks the basic compact between a nation and its people has been broken, who sees government as more of an aggressive force for good than a bureaucratic menace to society.

Much of this is going to depend on your standard philosophical leanings. Standard Catholic theory present (for example) that the soul may leave the body (that sounds dualistic: disentangle may be a better term.) at a point even before physical death processes happen.I find that idea to be easier to comprehend than "what if part of me survives!" Have you ever had blood drawn? If so there's probably cultured blood cells from you in a lab somewhere, are those part of your soul?

From Simmons mailbag:

Q: You have established the Levels of Losing. This whole Manti
Te'o thing has got me thinking of the Levels of Indefensibly Defending
Sports Figures. There has to be a certain level to where you can't
defend your favorite stars without coming off as a pathetic, nonsensical
fan. If there were five levels in all, Joe Paterno's supporters would
be the highest (Level 5). Mel Gibson's fans are a 4 but dying to be a 5.
Every Notre Dame fan defending Manti right now would probably be a 3
(with the chance to climb). This idea is in its infancy stages, how can
you help?

—Joe, Syracuse

SG: Come on, you barely need any tweaking! You were right
there! Fine, I'll help. You should have gone with six levels (you missed
one).

Level 1: Reserved for harmless stuff — like Boston fans
defending Kevin Garnett every time he acts like a bully or an a-hole
(just because he's on our team and we love him and that's what you do
when it's your guy), or Cowboys fans blindly defending Tony Romo's
litany of choke jobs just because they love Tony Romo, or Miami fans
refusing to admit that Dwyane Wade is an occasionally dirty player, or
Utah fans arguing that Karl Malone really DID have some clutch moments.
All benevolent fan-defending goes here.

Level 2: A blown-out version of the first level — the
stakes are a little higher only because there's a little more of that
hits-too-close-to-home sensitivity. Like how Ravens fans fly off the
handle every time someone jokes about Ray Lewis's incident from 2000.
Yes, you could throw Kobe and the Lakers fans in here. As well as Red
Sox fans post-2004 right after any steroids joke about Manny or Papi.

Level 3: Any longtime O.J. Simpson fan now making the "If
we're going to make excuses for Junior Seau, why can't we make the same
excuses for everything that happened to O.J. after he retired? What if
he has CTE, too?" defense. This gets its own level. By the way, I'm
all-in on the CTE O.J. defense. He should start pushing it right now.

Level 4: Any Notre Dame fan pushing the whole "Look, Manti
is the one who's a victim here!" scenario. If you play the
catfishing/naive angle hard enough, the "victim" door is
juuuuuuuuuuuuuust open enough that they don't sound completely insane.
Just marginally insane.

Level 5: Anyone defending baseball cheaters (Bonds,
Clemens, McGwire, etc.) with the always hilarious "We don't know for
sure" defense or the equally hilarious "Come on, everyone was cheating,
any competitive person would have done what they did" defense. All PED
defenses go here. So does everyone defending Lance Armstrong's last two
decades of lying/cheating/bullying/threatening/intimidating because "he
did some real good, too."

Level 6: Anyone who wanted the Paterno statue to stay up;
anyone who thinks that Paterno and/or Penn State's administration didn't
have an inkling that something was at the very least a little off with
Jerry Sandusky; anyone who rushed out a mostly flattering post-scandal
biography about Paterno without waiting for the entire investigation to
play out; and anyone who said the words, "Well, this may have
complicated Joe's legacy, but it didn't change all the great things he
did." Welcome to the highest level of Indefensibly Defending Sports
Figures.

244 MOJITO - for two

-buncha mint leaves (if you have a PRican/Cuban store nearby get yerba buena, which is like a cross between regular US mint and spearmint, otherwise any fresh mint)
- 2 Tbsp (mas o menos) of 10X confectioner's sugar
-water
-3 Tbsp (mas o menos) of fresh lime juice

You crush the mint leaves to release the juice.
Then you take the sugar and dissolve it in just enough water to make a maple syrup consistency.
Add that and the lime juice to the mint.

Add 1/2 cup white rum.
Then ice and water (plain or carbonated --- I prefer plain) to desired strength and taste.

I've never actually measured the stuff but I think that's about right. Anyway, if you have a bunch of mint, you can fool around with the proportions until you get it just the way you like it. And frankly, by the third or fourth try you won't give a damn.

Also if you live in Missouri (I dunno if you do) make sure to fill out all the proper forms. We're a wierd state where "Nutrition and Hyrdration" is actually a special subsection of the living will. (Thanks Cruzan case!)

I've checked into it a little bit....because my mom wanted one.
But she didn't get it done, and died before it was an issue.

Here in OK, there is a 'Living Will with Irrevocable DNR'.

329 14--- Hillary!: Hot, or Not?

Not, but she could be a very attractive senior if she had the faintest clue what "attractive" is.
She has nice hair, which was well cut and styled on the 2008 campaign trail. So why is she growing it out so it looks like hell? Word is Chelsea told her to. Take one look at Chelsea, dear. This is a style mentor? I don't think so.
Then there are the cankles, her worst feature, which lead her to wear pants all the time. But why the 1970's pants suits? And how about taking a clue from a real fashionista like Condi Rice: dress boots.

She could look good for a 65 yr old. She needs a make-over by "What Not to Wear."

206 ...I guess I am going to have to get a 'living will'.
Under thosecircumstances, your having a living will could alleviate some of his stress and grief. If you don't have it and he has to pull the plug, well, he pulled the plug. He made that decision andhas to deal with that guilt. If he doesn't pull the plug and keeps you in a vegetative state against your wishes because he can't let you go he has to deal with the guilt of going against your wishes because he can't let you go.
It takes that part of the responsibility off of him.

@Wheatie,

DNR's are techincally doctor's order's anyway.
I learned at my last conference that most surgeons suspend them while you're on the operating table, so they aren't foolproof by any stretch of the imagination. (Plus docs are afraid of getting sued, which is why they're so hesitant to overrule family members. Have you seen a fultility policy? You basically have to be already dead before it can be invoked.)

Sounds about right, althogh I don't think that kicks in until 2014.
Also if you have an emergency and need an ambulance (or treatment) before you have a chance to fill out insurance forms, you might be on the hook for a pretty penny.
I expect hospitals will start having "insurance specialists" on staff though. Not actual people from "InsuranceCo." because they won't want those patients. But hosptial employees whose job it will be to sign up all the uninsured to help the hospital bottom line.

Not sure.
Last year, when I was reading up on all this...there were things that made my eyes glaze over.

And my lawyer was not really very helpful.
I asked him a lot of questions...he said he would have to get back to me, and that has been about 8 months now.
Tried calling him again, and he hasn't returned my call.

I think I will probably have to find another lawyer to get this done.

Posted by: wheatie at January 19, 2013 06:15 PM (fH4X9)

360 Strikingly the PPAB stuff isn't that different from the "God Panels" in the early days of dialysis that were so heavily critiqued. Except instead of excluding individuals, we can exclude "conditions" and "treatment" paths and obscure what we're doing!

You're average lawyer (even an estate planner) is ill prepared for this shit (also futility plans are hospital level documents anyway. Sorry, academic mode kicked in.)Heck, I'm (theoretically) trained in this, and have a hard time figuring it all out. That being said, you're best bet is still just to make sure your wishes and intents are as clear as crystal and talk it over regularly with spouse/family members. But even then, if there's any disagreement, an inter-family fight is ineveitable.

Posted by: tsrblke at January 19, 2013 06:18 PM (GaqMa)

362 I live in fear because barring a release to return to work, after April 2014 I will only be able to carry COBRA for a couple of years and then it's on to Medicare for me.

My ICD-CRT has to be replaced every 3-4 years.

I can imagine the struggle I will have to get that $150k surgery every few years.

The legal document may help with that (in the sense that they can say "well it's what they wanted." Thus providing an outlet for them. But that's about it.
Maybe make sure your General Practicioner knows? (Mine doesn't even set foot in a hospital anymore, so that's a wash for me.)
I'd avoid the DNR's unless you're sick enough already you'd rather them not try. To many possible misinterpretations. (Frankly, I'd like them to try first.)
The wife and I agreed to a tested time trial. Give it 6 months (or a year, I forget what we decided) then you can say you tried. It makes her feel better than "yank it bitch!"
