A 57-year-old woman was shot while riding a CTA bus Thursday night in the Hamilton Park neighborhood, authorities said.
The woman was shot at 8:38 p.m. while riding an eastbound CTA #67 bus in the 300 block of West 69th Street, according to police and CTA spokesman Catherine Hosinski.
The woman was shot in the wrist and chest and taken in good condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the police and fire departments said. A witness told FOX 32 News that he heard two gun shots.

I also get a chuckle out of how libs will berate religious people for believing in "myths" and then in the next breath proclaim their absolute belief in the magic of "The Law" which in and of itself will stop people from committing crimes.

37 My 74 year old Sicilian barber told me last night that if "Governor Homo" sends anyone for his guns, he's going down shooting.

The whole barbershop was in an uproar. Cuomo played to the downstate crowd on this one. The upstaters are furious. That's why Cuomo is doing damage control today, citing phony, made-up poll numbers "proving" that upstaters are "overwhelmingly" supportive of the new measures.

Man, did I hear some colorful Italian phrases in the barbershop last night! Nobody does put-downs like the Italians and Sicilians. It was like hanging out with Tony and Sil at The Bing.

Given that the Supreme court has decided that the second amendment is indeed an individual right, it is as reasonable to expect that the court will uphold a gun ban to the same extent that they would uphold a religion band, meaning not at all.

Why doesn't someone ever point this out to the media. Gun bans are ILLEGAL!!!!!!

I have long argued that we should completely do away with voting in the legislature. Every law maker should be required to write every bill he supports, and submit a finished copy of it in his own handwriting before it can be counted as a "yes" vote.

It would slow down lawmakers considerably. I can't think of a downside to this idea.

83 The Hudson County town of West New York is considering a widespread sign regulation that could include banning American flags from being flown.

The Board of Commissioners have a draft ordinance for “General Sign Regulations”.

Among the prohibited signs under the proposal would be “Flags, banners and pennants.”

This has opponents upset.

“What if I want to hang the American Flag? I can’t,” Frank Ferriero told politickerNJ. “Man, that’s un-American.”

The proposed ordinance was first read at a meeting on Wednesday. The final vote on the proposal will be held on Feb. 20 at a 7 p.m. meeting at the municipal building.

A bill in SC has been introduced, with support, to exempt the SC militia
from all federal gun regulations. Let’s see Holder fight that one in
court.

http://is.gd/zU3mu8

AND.....

SECTION 25-1-60. Composition and classes of militia.

(A) The militia of this State consists of all able-bodied persons over seventeen years of age who are:

(1) citizens of the United States residing within this State;

(2) citizens of the United States bound by law, lawful order, or contract to serve in the militia or military forces of this State; or

(3) persons who have declared their intention to become citizens of the
United States and are bound by law, lawful order, or contract to serve in the militia or military forces of this State.

(B) The militia is divided into three classes:

(1) the National Guard;

(2) the organized militia not in National Guard service; and

(3) the unorganized militia.

There is no federal registration requirement for weapons that are not covered by NFA. So if it isn't a machine gun or a sawed-off shotgun or something like that, you should be fine. Texas and Kansas are gun-friendly states, so their requirements are probably trivial.

Agree with you there. Unfortunately my respect for cops has eroded somewhat over time. Seems that since so many laws have been passed and so much of what used to be part of normal day-to-day activity has been criminalized it seems that some, not all to be certain- but some, cops have come to the conclusion that an easy and safe path to a pension can be had by hassling law abiding citizens rather than going after hardened criminals.

The fact that they are often cowed by various interest groups and hamstrung by various bullshit "zero tolerance" statutes magnifies the problem.

135 To give you an idea of what a country without a Second Amendment looks like, look no further than Mexico.

This week, with lots of hoopla and fanfare, they signed into law sweeping measures to address the rampant crime and criminality.

What did they do, you ask?

They passed a "victims rights" law.

Yup.

They had to pass a law to clarify that if you are a victim of a crime you have the right to have the police investigate (and pretty much a bunch of other stupid shit like that).

Now, watch crime plummet in Mexico.

Or increase. Probably increase.

Whatever. But they did have some famous poet who advocated this crying at the signing ceremony. So, they got that at least.

168 From NRA site: This statute also lowers New York's magazine capacity
limit from ten rounds to seven. You can possess magazines capable of
holding more than ten for one year, but you cannot sell or transfer them
to anyone living in New York. State residents have one year from
enactment to transfer or surrender them.

Cuomo really missed the boat when he failed to include a provision that prohibited reloading. That 7-round limit isn't going to do much good when the shooter has 10 loaded magazines ready to go.

169 About 60 foreign hostages are still unaccounted for three days into a bloody siege with Islamic militants at a gas plant deep in the Sahara, Algeria's state news service said Friday.

The militants, meanwhile, offered to trade two American hostages for terror figures jailed in the United States, according to a statement received by a Mauritanian news site that often reports news from North African extremists.

180 Almost all pistols have larger than 7 round magazines. I don't think you can just make them all illegal b/c hundreds of thousands if not millions of people in New York state own them.

---

IIRC, you have to go out and buy special magazines to meet the state's laws, as I found out when shopping for accessories for my pistol some years back.

When I looked at the page of magazines, I figured I would only see the 15-shot one that came with it and the extended mag version which held 30+. Not so much, as they had 10-shot and 7-shot ones to meet asinine state laws in places like Delaware and New Jersey.

My plan would be to introduce legislation autorizing the governor of Texas to raise an all volunteer militia. To be in said group you would have to apply and get a license ($30 a year or something so it would be self funding) and do 10 hours a year in training (self reported). It would accept all persons in the state, and allow semi autos and no mag bans. Groups would also be encouraged to go to local high schools and organize shooting groups likeAppleseed and teach gun safety.
To keep the crazies out, there would be a process like lawyers go through where members could report other members for investigation. Any revocation of membership would be reviewable in court and the burden of proof would be on teh accusers/state.
That would have to meet mustereven to the liberal definition of the 2nd amendment.

NEW YORK (WABC) --
A troubling oversight has been found within New York State's sweeping new gun laws.

The ban on having high-capacity magazines, as it's written, would also include law enforcement officers.
Magazines with more than seven rounds will be illegal under the new law when that part takes effect in March.

238 I'm kinda kicking around the idea that those cases where it did happen
were few and far between and highly dependent upon facts and context not
supplied. I think tribalism and blood are not so easily cast aside.

plural of anecdote != data

BUT

It apparently happened in my own family (father's side, I think). I don't think it was every family, or even every town where it happened, but I think it happened enough that the description is fairly fitting.

And the thing to remember, here, is that the majority of people in the South were not slave owners, and there were slave owners in the North who fought for the Union. Which kind of puts the lie to that whole "It was a war to end slavery!" line. Or, should, but for some reason it never does.

Meh, it happened. I'm sure there were cases where a Northerner sided with the South or vice versa and acted upon that, but it was much more about loyalty to your own than otherwise. So if you had cousins in both Maine and South Carolina then they'd be on different sides because of the States theyresided in. But probably very early on in the War there was side selecting going on. After the shooting started not so much, since you'd get killed as a spy.

In Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, urged the Legislature to make it illegal to enforce any executive order by the president that violates the Constitution.

Not to be pedantic here, but isn't it ALREADY illegal to enforce any action, order, or mandate that violates the Constitution? The problem lies with defining, in clear terms, how such an order, action or mandate is itself a violation of the Constitution, and therefore unenforceable.

246 According to Mauratania’s ANI news agency, which seems to be in contact with the Battalion of Blood, the terrorist group behind the hostage crisis, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the group’s leader, is offering to release the American hostages in exchange for the release of Egyptian Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and Pakistani Aafia Siddiqui, who are in jail in America on terrorism charges.

Belmokhtar has recorded a video message, which he is going to send to the mass media, in which he offers the same swap and calls on the French and Algerians to negotiate an end to the war in northern Mali.

We cannot independently verify this, although ANI has been broadly right in its reports throughout this crisis.

Had to tell him the last riots over desegregation were in Boston, how there are well-defined lines demarcating the areas where the black live in the northern cities that don't exist in the South, how most of what this country "knows" about Southern Racism is Hollywood bullshit written by people who've never lived in or even visited a rural Southern community.

1. The South got it's ass kicked in the Civil War. That is punishment enough for slavery and rebellion.
2. Plenty of Northerners made money from slaves and slaving, so there is plenty of blame to go around, both North and South of the Mason Dixon line.
3. The South was defending sovereignty as much as slavery.
4. Slavery was an untenable economic plan (see Thomas Sowell) and would have failed on its own...and many in the South knew it.
5. It was a long, long time ago. You should defend, and be proud of the current South, not the South of 1860.

287 there were slaves in the north, especially NJ, to wit:
New Jersey, like other northern states, replaced outright slavery with stricter controls of free blacks. Black voters were disenfranchsed by an 1807 state law that limited the franchise to "free, white male" citizens.
In 1830, of the 3,568 Northern blacks who remained slaves, more than two-thirds were in New Jersey. The institution was rapidly declining in the 1830s, but not until 1846 was slavery permanently abolished. At the start of the Civil War, New Jersey citizens owned 18 "apprentices for life" (the federal census listed them as "slaves") -- legal slaves by any name.
"New Jersey's emancipation law carefully protected existing property rights. No one lost a single slave, and the right to the services of young Negroes was fully protected. Moreover, the courts ruled that the right was a 'species of property,' transferable 'from one citizen to another like other personal property.' "[10]
Thus "New Jersey retained slaveholding without technically remaining a slave state."[11]ere were slaves in the north, especially NJ, working on large farms

Pretty much, except that my original post was pointing out why the Civil War is such a touchy subject - why people feel the way they do - rather than if they ought to feel the way they do.
The problem with the Civil War is that there was a good principle - state's rights - defending a bad practice - slavery - and the two are very difficult to disentangle when trying to figure out why people acted the way they did.

304 Five months ago, the group of homemade gun enthusiasts known as Defense Distributed set out to create a lethal firearm that could be downloaded and 3D-printed entirely from scratch, circumventing all gun control laws. But as new gun bills have been proposed in the wake of recent shootings, creating a bootleg weapon with digital pieces may soon be far easier: As simple as printing a spring-loaded plastic box.

Over the past weekend, Defense Distributed successfully 3D-printed and tested an ammunition magazine for an AR semi-automatic rifle, loading and firing 86 rounds from the 30-round clip.

312 I am in NY, and my CCW permit, like everywhere in the counties outside NYC, is issued by the county. On it is typed, with an old typewriter, the make, model, and serial number of my various handguns, most of which are now made illegal due to their mag capacity.

I'm going to find out if the county has these permit details in their computer records. I think they don't.

The law as written appears to "grandfather" my handguns with their over-7 magazines, but if I wish to sell them in NY or probably even trade them in at a NY gun dealer, I could not do so.

I know that gun shows go on everywhere, though, and as a private seller I could go to a gun show and sell any of them, even in Illinois which has no CCW at all for private citizens.

Or I could just sell one out of the trunk of my car. Anywhere but in NY.

340 why the Civil War remains an emotional subject.

Because of the major butt-fucking the South took during and afterward. What little industry we had, and our major transportation hubs, were wasted. We had no money to rebuild and that left the remaining wealthy ag interests in charge, which further delayed development. We were poor for a long time and need someone to hold to blame.

We can't talk about who died already, because then we would have to do something about it. We can't talk about who escaped already, because they would be interviewed and might interfere with the narrative. We can't talk about who they are still holding, because that will interfere with our negotiations with the terrorists. We have to figure out who we will agree to release.

See how this works? Talking about the facts just screws everything up, from the administrations point of view.

I mean, the last we heard about the mastermind of the Benghazi attacks, he was drinking tea in a coffee house, and the Libyans, our "great friends" won't arrest him.

yeah that is what they want you to think but unless she made it a refundable credit which her bullshitese does not lend itself too you are in fact needing to have been scheduled to pay more than 2 grand to see gain.

If she were handing cash over I'd be the first in line turn in a shot out enfield since it has a "10 shot mag" and take the 2 grand and go buy 4 AR lowers.

I'm funny that way...

what she is selling is you need to be one of the "taxpayers" to see any gain, and even then will not be on the plus side until you are a few brackets up...

So if someone ever asks me for a light, should I just automatically assume they're going to attack me when I say no and DON'T start rustling through my purse, thus exposing my wallet and other valuables?

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporate Finance has begun the steps necessary to create a regulation that would in many ways mirror the DISCLOSE Act — a bill Senate Democrats have failed to pass through Congress.

Created in reaction to the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court ruling that said corporations and unions could not have limits placed on their political expenditures, the Senate bill would require political organizations to publicly name their donors and the amounts they give.

Absolutely. I was so offended I picked up the phone and call the Operations Officer of the Golden Knights, who at the time was a buddy, and made sure that if an application from this kid ever showed up....it would promptly find the circular file.

The worst part was that I told the kid I could not do anything for him at that exact moment since he was about 40 days from from leaving my unit. But that I would call the commander of his next unit, AND the Golden Knights and tell them the deal. The kid had all the FAA tickets he needed and had about 90 jumps with civilian rigs. He was a prime prospect. My phone calls would have done more for him than anything else. It's a very small community and who you know ensures you get at least a look-see.

But nooooooooooo. He had to "mention" it to Aunt Rosa.

So I "mentioned" it to everyone I knew too.

Perps do not "faint" when you point a gun at them. She should have put two rounds in his chest, then one in his head as soon as the door popped open. He was already too close to her thus making it possible to rush to disarm her.

If the commercial was in NY or some other fucked up blue State with no castle laws she should have a cheap saturday night special to put in his hand.

418 During the National Rifle Association’s meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and the White House gun violence task force, the vice president said the Obama administration does not have the time to fully enforce existing gun laws.

Jim Baker, the NRA representative present at the meeting, recalled the vice president’s words during an interview with The Daily Caller: “And to your point, Mr. Baker, regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply don’t have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately.”

Submitting false information on an ATF Form 4473 — required for the necessary background check to obtain a firearm — is a felony punishable by up to ten years in prison, depending on prior convictions and a judge’s discretion, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

not all credits are refundable Allen.

Deductions are for folk and cost of busines, credits are for doing things the government likes or feels sorry for you for.

You can do lots of things the feds sorta like that are non refundable and blank out what is owed....for example you can get child care credits, energy credits, etc etc valued at "30,000" and get back "zero"

you can owe zero in taxes and get the EITC, the first Time Homebuyer's credit, the additonal child tax credit, and on and on and get back 45,000 dollars....

I've prepared returns towards those extremes but not quite so bad..

That credit may not be refundable, but if you pay more than 2K per year in taxes (or some combination of payments and refundable credits in excess of 2K), then the non-refundable credits should be handled first, meaning you get your full amount of refundable credits/payments back (well, not "full amount" but you know what I mean).

This is very true. If the starving people happen to be on a whole different continent as they starve, and thus aren't hanging around wailing and moaning on the doorstep of the feel-good regressives, all the better. As far as assuaging any potential guilt they may feel about starving people to power their cars, well, they'll just make sure tobuy scarves made by Nepalese women and bracelets strung in Somalia or Peru, and all's well.

482 464 cajun carrot,

Yeah...folks forget how much they paid in the 80s and 90s.

Bush was a lot of things but he basically told the lower middle class and below...hey shit really is FREE FOR YOU!

He went more clinton than clinton and from a pure math standpoint it kinda worked a little...."sorta'

Had he just used that and we had not had our expenses go up he could have proven laffer correct once and for all and we would have seen legitimate surpluses for about 3 years.

OBL had other ideas though and Bush went "compassionate" and started medi D....

anyway politically and economics for dummies wise I think Bush murdered Reagan.....

part of why what Mitt was selling did not resonate with the working poor has nothing to do with race or wild envy...they honestly feel no cost from the federal government but maybe fuel tax, they blame companies that pass higher tax on to them for the prices, and they get a nice refundable set of credits that make govt look like daddy....

Republicans confuse them b/c they use words that make it sound like they are an angry daddy but donks are happy daddy.

Grossly simplified analysis?

Absolutely but not much wrong.

489 Since we have people mispronouncing Littoral Combat Ship aka floating target. A little story from WWII of where a briefer almost found himself sloshing ashore of one of those remote Pacific islands he was reporting on.

Gen. Hap Arnold was being given his briefing on recent events in the Pacific theater. TAIU down in Eagle Farms Australia had recently given a codename for the clipped wing A6M3 Zero.

So the briefer was standing there before General Arnold and and staff. He proudly reported that General Kenney's fighters had shot down x number of enemy Hap fighters.

So General Arnold asked what was the name of that fighter again?

Briefer stammers and blurts out they are called Hamp fighters. General Arnold seems satisfied and the briefing proceeds normally. Next a message is sent to TAIU that henceforth the A6M3 Zero will be called a Hamp.

Why?

It was a good video.
