Shorter Weigel: NRA Responsible For Media's Shoddy Sandy Hook Reporting

Journolist punk Dave Weigel has a ridiculous hit piece on the NRA in amateur webzine Slate that you can look up if you want. The HQ's "no links for asshats" rule is solidly in play on this one.

He first criticizes a Sandy Hook Truther video that has a bunch of hits on YouTube. Fair enough. One of those hits was mine, but unfortunately there was no way for YouTube to measure the eyeroll it elicited before I shut it down.

I dunno, maybe it was the misspelling of "hologram" right at the beginning that turned me off. No, wait, that wasn't really it (although it didn't help).

What really provoked clicking away from the video was the fact that it tries to build a conspiracy theory out of the mainstream media's horrendous early reporting of the incident. As an exercise in logic, this is asinine. What they're saying is that the early media reporting should be trusted, but later reporting, which should be more accurate as assertions get backfilled with evidence, shouldn't. In reality, you could fill an Internet with what reporters don't know about guns and aren't interested in learning.

An honest critique of the video, unlike Weigel's, would then flow to how conspiracy theories are enabled by the media and that reporters have a greater duty to get the story right than they have to get it quick, etc.

But that wasn't Weigel's purpose in writing the piece. His purpose, apparently, was to blame the NRA for pushing the conspiracy theory. Which is odd, since the NRA didn't have anything to do with it.

What the NRA did do, though, was raise the possibility that Operation Fast & Furious was run by the Obama administration to generate sympathy for gun control legislation. And, you know, since they believe that, then they obviously believe all the stuff in the video too.

Here's Weigel's smoking gun:

“Over a period of two or three years they were running thousands and thousands of guns to the most evil people on earth,” [Wayne LaPierre] said. “At the same time they were yelling ’90 per cent… of the guns the Mexican drug cartels are using come from the United States.’ ” It wasn’t a wild theory. “It’s the only thing that makes any sense.”

Before discounting that, I'd like to hear the law enforcement purpose of Fast & Furious from the Obama administration, or, for that matter, Weigel. The only plan they had of tracking guns that were sent to Mexico was, apparently, recovering them from crime scenes. That's a hell of a law enforcement operation there. And as far as the 90% thing goes, even the liberal FactCheck.org can't spin it as true.

You know who else said Fast & Furious should be used to support gun control proposals? The ATF, that's who:

On July 14, 2010 after ATF headquarters in Washington D.C. received an update on Fast and Furious, ATF Field Ops Assistant Director Mark Chait emailed Bill Newell, ATF's Phoenix Special Agent in Charge of Fast and Furious:

"Bill - can you see if these guns were all purchased from the same (licensed gun dealer) and at one time. We are looking at anecdotal cases to support a demand letter on long gun multiple sales. Thanks."

On Jan. 4, 2011, as ATF prepared a press conference to announce arrests in Fast and Furious, Newell saw it as "(A)nother time to address Multiple Sale on Long Guns issue." And a day after the press conference, Chait emailed Newell: "Bill--well done yesterday... (I)n light of our request for Demand letter 3, this case could be a strong supporting factor if we can determine how many multiple sales of long guns occurred during the course of this case."

So, no, LaPierre's assertions about Fast & Furious are nothing like a conspiracy theory based on bad reporting. Nice try, Weigel, but back to the drawing board.

We'd see some big stories then, you bet!

Oh, well - maybe someday.

8 At least the MFM is starting to figure out they should be embarrassed when they don't cover something that is obviously newsworthy, or when they cover it so badly that even the rubes (who are their intended audience) notice.

Of course, they haven't yet risen to the point where they can address such bad reporting maturely and say, "Yeah, our bad, we screwed up." Nope, they're like children having to find some way to lay blame somewhere else.

Maybe, with enough more ridicule and exposure, they'll at least get to be like that NFL Ref in some commercial several years ago, "Yes, we really blew that call. We promise that we'll blow one the other way in the second half, just to make it even."

Just got confirmation that my purchase of weaponry and ammo (about 250K) made on behalf of numerous siblings, in laws, outlaws and other members of the family tree who I've been entrusted to care for certain matters has been signed, sealed and delivered! Although the dollar amount might seem a bit extravagant, it pales in comparison to the total amount of national debt these branches of the family tree are now responsible for and they now own items that will likely increase in value (black market or "white" market), a piece of gold or silver will still be a piece of gold or silver.....

41 :: I'd like to hear the law enforcement purpose of Fast Furious from the Obama administration ::

This is something that has been bothering me from the very start of this mess. Assuming that there even *was* a law enforcement purpose to Fast and Furious, government agencies do not just go out and do operations on a lark. I mean it's not like a bunch of ATF agents are sitting around the break room and one of them says "hey guys, I know what we can do. Lets get a bunch of gun dealers to purposely sell guns to known drug dealers so we can track them into Mexico!" and then they go out after lunch and do it.

No, there is a considerable amount of paperwork to plan, obtain resources and budget, schedule, deconflict, and get GENERAL COUNSEL APPROVAL before anything like F-n-F can happen.

So somewhere in BATF there are formal documents that state what the purpose of the operation was, what resources it would require to do it, how much it would cost, whether or not it was LEGAL (and why), and most importantly, WHO THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA.

That documentation should answer all the questions that have been raised to date, and if it does not exist, is being withheld, or has been destroyed then a number of additional crimes have been committed.

There should be a at least a Pulitzer prize in it for whatever reporter can either A) obtain the documentation or B) determine why it can't be obtained.

But the "correct" party is in power so we get detailed profiles of the various court jesters who will perform at the coronation.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGG!!!

A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about “far right” groups such as the “anti-federalist” movement, which supports “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.”

The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right.”

The center — part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army officers — posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government activists with three movements it identifies as “a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist movement.”

Why do you want a smaller government you terrorists?!?

Me, too.

And it doesn't take a "conspiracy theory" at all. I he'd used a Bushmaster AR, we'd be seeing pictures of it all over the place. 20/20 and 60 Minutes would replace their bumper graphic with a picture of the Evil Black Rifle.

Now, I can actually think of 2 semi-likely reasons they would not do this. Occam's Razor says "the rifle doesn't exist" and that he used some other kind of weapon (shotgun, some other rifle, handgun, sword, spork, whatever). The less likely, but still possible, option is that the gun was already illegal- that is, it really was an "assault weapon" either purchased illegally by mom, or purchased legally and modified- and they are afraid someone will notice if they show pictures.

That second one is a doozy, but makes a crazy kind of sense. Once the shooting was shoe-horned into fodder for "gun safety legislation," if anyone ever realizes that the gun was already illegal, what little cover they have is completely blown.

Though, more honestly, I think they're not showing pictures of the weapon(s) because they don't think they have to. I'm betting that they think "we can just spout sob stories, and bring on the occasional parent who lost a child at SH Elem, and they (the public) will be eating out of our hand."

81 Marine recruit arrested at San Diego airport after mad dash to freedom from boot camp
A 22-year-old Marine recruit apparently had second thoughts about going through with boot camp. The man scaled two fences, one topped with barbed wire, before being arrested at a nearby San Diego airport. Police say this isn’t the first time a Marine recruit attempted an escape from the training facility.

My utmost distrust and contempt for the media suggests that if the weapon he used was a scary military-style assault weapon they'd be showing it every chance they got. They're not revealing it because it doesn't fit in with their propoganda and would weaken their world view. The media is vile, lying, cheating, stealing traitors and should be viewed with the suspicion and mistrust of Satan.

Maybe. That hasn't really been a mantra that I've ever heard, but I'm in Texas and only watch the national news shows under duress, so I could have missed something.

My understanding, though, is that any weapon can be modified, and that's a little to big a bite. Remember: incrementalism. Little moves. Yes, eventually they want to totally disarm the populace, but they know they can't do that yet.

And showing an already illegal rifle makes people say, "So why do we need new laws? It was already illegal to own that gun."

118 107 Sean Bannion,

He is absolutely satisfied with himself, or rather he is scared smug.

He is without a doubt an Xs and Os genius probably the first Sb winning coach since Landry who mastered both sides of the chalkboard completely.

Hoodie is a better OC and DC than his high caliber team's staff and they perform.

The failures of his tree show that he is definitely the virtuoso, it is his inability to be gracious when he is handled that tells me it is a genius fueled by either fear or rage.

I don't know what pissed him off, or beat him so badly he uses the fuel but I live my life on the "fueled by fear and rage" engine myself. he is kind enough not to diculge ANYTHING that motivates him. I cannot figure him out and I know that if I were to point out a "winning is everything" approach to my son I'd point to him and if I wanted to teach my son "there are rules of decorum to conflict" lesson it would not be him.

You understand what I am talking about if perhaps I put it a different way.

122 RE Sandy Hook. Initially we heard all kinds of shit. As it turns out, like all initial news reports, it was shit. But now we are hearing nothing.

The reason for that is simple. The local law enforcement has clamped down on everything despite the fact that there will be no prosecutions to contaminate. And the reason for that? They are trying to cover the county's ass for civil liability.

And that is thanks to the stupid joint and several liability laws, which CT also has. Despite the fact that the perp is fully responsible for the deaths, if a shyster can convince 7 hand picked idiots on a jury of 12 that the county has even a small part in not preventing this, the county will get stuck for a huge bill.

Which the lawyer will get most of. And even if the county wins, they still lose after months of expensive litigation.

The leftoids and lunatic fringe righties are both spinning conspiracies.

They are retarded.

Like I said if it was all .223 show the brass, if it was the pistols say so but instead we are being attacked and we don't even KNOW what the hell went on.

You draw a false equivalency when you compare "it was da Jews" with "he used the pistols."

We don't even have a timeline or map of what he did, and we would have if this were an attack on an embassy or something.

Time Magazine has nice diagrams of the embassy attacks for example.

The newsies are reporting on this in the vague retarded way they are because of their agenda.

By contrast Sandy Hook was less than five wounded, twenty plus killed. I know that children are more frail, but . . . I don't know. Seems odd. Kids aren't that fragile; a coworker ran over his kid with a freakin' tractor and the kid is running around and riding dirt bikes not too long after.

140 I think there are people who want to believe Belichick isn't as good as he really is, and for them Spygate confirmed that in their minds. And the haters don't like the fact that the Pats are consistently good. Posted by: Mainah at January 18, 2013 09:01 AM (659DL)

That's how I see it.

I just see him as an introvert who doesn't like attention.

Mostly because that's how I am. But to each his own. His run won't last forever. In fact, I can see the end on the horizon right now.

142 Sven,

We're all on the same side. I probably should have said, "The only conspiracy theory that I've heard, and could possibly withstand Occam's razor, is the pistols one."

I don't buy into all the "Gubmint did this" bullshit. Why? Because Obama would have gone full retard with the EO's and banned importation of foreign guns, ammo, and parts.

He didn't.

I can buy into that the majority of the killing was done with the handguns, and since that doesn't further the agenda, the MFM is not going to report it.

I can see that.

144 136 Hrothgar,

I was raised by a guy who worked for funny letters to read the paper of your enemies, your papers, and neutral papers THEN look for source material when it gets handy.

It is funny that I am now firmly of the opinion that the US media is less trustworthy completely than France, UK's, Germany's, China's, AND Russia's.

They may not shoot straight but if you factor in their biases they still at least report things that are not advantageous for their views.

Ben Ghazi?

Then he picked a really odd profession. I spent all of my time up until my mid to late 20's in and around sports and I've never met a coach that was introverted. Kinda hard to do when you're supposed to be a leader.

I did. Not a problem. I don't care who likes him or not. I was asking.

Having said that, I don't usually except the freak switch cranked to 11 when I do that.

Do you know who Ernie Adams is? Bellichick is the Ernie Adams who stands on the sideline.

More than once around here I've read sentiments from Morons about sports teams and coaches to the effect of "I don't care who they are as long as they're winning."

Then you got a guy who wins....a lot...and everyone hates him. I don't get it. But again....it doesn't matter.

150 140 EAK,

I guess at the end of the day you have to look at range he was attacking, what ammo idiot mommy had handy, and the fact that the kids if they were trained at all were trained to be sitting targets in all likelihood.

The human body is a wonderfully resilient, and horrifyingly delicate mechanism.

There is NO easy explanation for lethality.

If any liberal uses the "right to life" argument that they are floating I am gonna have to run away from them physically or I will break their jaw.

They are baby butchers.

(B) The militia is divided into three classes:

(1) the National Guard;

(2) the organized militia not in National Guard service; and

(3) the unorganized militia.

Having bashed Belichick as a thoroughly rotten excuse for a human being, I'd be a fucking fool to not own up that he's a very good football coach and doubtlessly a first round HOFer unless he does something really weird in the future that turns off a lot of people. He is extremely good at motivating his players which shouts "Leader" to me. Actually his weirdness as far as stiffing the MFM kind of endears him to me (*kind* of) because it must piss off that twatty asshole Goodell and anybody that does that gets a thumbs up from me.

Am I the only one who doesn't like being high? I've
been given prescription narcotics for various things (most recently,
when I hurt my back several weeks ago), and I try to avoid taking them
because I don't like how they make me feel. Mostly, they don't even take
away the pain, they just make you not care that you still hurt.

Am I alone on that one?

I'm OK with the off beer buzz every now and then, but not a fan of feeling like I don't control myself, so me and painkillers don't get along real well.
I once popped of a couple of Benadryll once to calm some allergiesand sat down to right a paper, I vaguely remember having my wife try to read it and then yelling at her as she tried to make a point about my grammer. I don't take that anymore unless I'm going straight to bed.

I don't particularly like it either. It's not so much an immediate dislike, but rather a long-term kind of deal, like, I could be a bit buzzed for, what? a few hours? But then I feel like crap for the next day.

Like overeating candy when you were a kid. Not really worth it considering the dent it puts in other stuff I'd like to do.
