Chris Christie: Something Must Be Done™

Part of his speech today (video below):

We must be the grownups on this issue. This is not a time for grandstanding and this is not a time for politics. This is a time for an open conversation on how we realistically deal with a very complex issue. Only then can we change the dialogue... change the tone and change how we address this issue so that we can better protect and preserve the safety of the people we serve, which is the first and most important obligation in my view of government."
Now, what do you think is going to happen after a guy like Christie talks about it "not being a time for politics" and "changing how we address this issue"?

C'mon, you know. We're going to get a full-throated defense of our individual rights and liberties. We're going to get a forceful and direct challenge to media narratives and assumptions. We're going to hear data and statistics about cities with strict gun control laws versus those that allow for concealed carry. We'll hear the countless stories of firearms being used in self-defense, in many cases saving lives. We're going to hear how ineffective and useless previous legislation like the Assault Weapons Ban has been. We'll hear him criticize "gun free zones". We'll hear how silly "solutions" like magazine capacity limits and restrictions on cosmetic rifle accessories are.

In short: We're about to get our Constitution on!

Or, y'know, the exact opposite.

Rising star of the Republican Party. Rising star.

P.S. He trashed the NRA today.

You can't ban evil or regulate insanity. That scares the crap out of people and they refuse to believe it and demand "Something must be done!!1!"

How do you reach those who've arrived at a policy decision through irrational thought? Solve that problem and we are home free!

You can't reason a person out of a position that they weren't reasoned into. Liberals count on that.

There was a Whig Party once until those who later called themselves Republicans split off in outrage over adamant Whig refusals to address the expansion of slavery into the territories. Imagine how lonely the last Whig presidential candidate felt in 1860. Now imagine he looked like Christie.

I am about the most staunch and faithfulRepublican voter the GOP is likely to find, but I'm seriously considering registering as an Independent and looking for a 3rd Party way out. The Republican Establishment is to socialism what the Whigs were to slavery. They won't fight. Hell with them.

99 I went to see Jack Reacher this afternoon. There were 6 previews before the movie began. All of them involved someone(s) have a gun/assault weapon of some kind. Since Hollywood loves them some gun control, I suggest they quit making movies that have any kind of weapon in them. People will discuss issues in these new movies to resolve all conflicts. Failing that someone will have to reach across the aisle so that all will be okay.
This will result in a kinder gentler America.

There is no way in hell Christie is getting nominated. I voted for Romney in the primaries, and McCain before him, but Christie has just burned way too many bridges.

You can say a lot about Romney and McCain, but they were never actively hostile to conservatives.

Yeah well California has had an "Assault" weapons ban for years. So apparently far too little, far too late. Hell all .50 BMG rifles are banned because... SCARY. They've never been used in a documented crime but ...SCARY!!!! So banned they are. Magazines? Oh they've been size limited since I was in short pants. Semiautomatic pistols that's right magazine size limits. Did I mention our "safe pistol" program wherein every manufacturer that wants to sell a pistol in this state must submit it to California and pay to have it destructively tested? Did I mention moving to the state with legal pistols requires you to register them with the California Department of Justice?

Yeah so when you talk about your friends who are all about that 2nd amendment. Where were they when it mattered? When our freedom was taken? Why weren't they standing up to their liberal buddies then? When it mattered? Before we became the model for enslaving the rest of the nation?

Re-check your premises. Spending went up under Christie. His proposed budgets included overall increases.

Christie's record as a budget cutter is, like most Republican politicians, a fraud.

The question is why so many supposed fiscal stalwarts bought it, based simply on the unbacked statements of the usual self-serving, D.C. based Republican/Conservative punditry class.

Christieis a liberal-Republican who is malleable and inexperienced in foreign policy (read: can be shaped by the Party's foreign policy hawks), hence he's boosted.

298 Christie isn't going to change parties, the GOP leadership are in agreement with everything he says and does, Christie is more or less John McCain's replacement in their eyes.

300 What do you expect from a guy who ordered the flags lowered to half staff when Whitney Houston died? Christie is a bully and, like all bullies, is a coward at heart. He's a complete zero.

He was a former federal prosecutor; just like Rudy and Client 9. It's the perfect role for a bully where they can run roughshod over the rights of the accused by putting them into bankruptcy defending themselves against an infinite budget. It also sets them up to fix up corrupt eastern shitholes by pulling the same type of shit on people that are more or less deserving of it having put the state or city behind the fucking 8 ball by prior cocksuckers being afraid to call them out. But there's no fucking way they should ever pull that shit on the national stage.

310 Real world, he was never going to be more than a better-marbled Rudy Giuliani at best anyway, really good for a northeastern moderate and that's about it.

312 Christie is what he is - a moderate GOPer governing a blue State. He could have had a shot at 2016, but by embracing Obama over Sandy, blaming the GOP for the fiscal cliff and now attacking the NRA, he has made himself toxic for the GOP primaries. He might win New Hampshire, but that would be about it. He may, of course, hope that all this "get me to a win in New Jersey" triangulation will be forgotten by GOPers hungry for victory in 2016, but I don't think it will be. After nominating two moderates in a row and losing, the GOP primary electorate in 2016 will be looking for a Reagan.

Congratulations, Christie - you've managed to be held in lower regard by most Republicans than the House leadership. You're a truly despicable piece of RINO shit. Fuck you. If you run for President and somehow manage to get the nomination, I'll vote Libertarian. You can go to Hell.

318 Christie should be odds-on favorite for the 2016 (Democratic) presidential nomination.

Wouldn't it be funny if Christie officially became a Democrat just before the 2016 primaries, and then beat Hillary Clinton for the nomination?

Don't forget how Christie boldly came out against the First Amendment, when he said he fully supported the state's right to fire an employee who had burned his own copy of the Koran on his own time. Or how Christie suggested that any American opposed to the Ground Zero victory mosque was a bigot.

Christie is just a fatter and whiter version of Obama.

Could we push that all gun control legislation should have a clause that restricts its applicationsolely to illegal activity?Since this would obviously be ineffective, wouldn't it force the left to admit that their gun restrictions will ONLY affect law abiding citizens?

324 Christie is done with national politics. He's pissed off too many segments of the conservative base. The 2012 nomination was wrapped in a bow for him when he passed it up, but now, he won't win a single state.

Early on, I definitely liked the guy, and I'll even go so far as to say I think he could have beat Obama had he been our nominee. But now, I'm not sure what he's doing, maybe making some sort of 3rd party play?

Posted by: McAdams at January 18, 2013 11:00 AM (QPfxr)

325 Methinks Christie is not going to be on anyone's lips for 2016.

Apparently, he is a very good shot. He managed to shoot himself in the foot, even though he can't actually see either of his.

Now...far be it from me to make this an issue. I know others have said this about the man to denigrate him unfairly. However in this case it is appropriate i think to point out the hypocrisy of the way in which he handles things and understands them.
Chris Christie is a severly overweight man. Childhood obesity and early onset diabetes is a FAR FAR FAR more prevelant problem in this country than gun violence is. This is just the plain honest truth.
Chris Christie is unconcerned about this issue. He is unconcerned about what and who it effects every day. We do not here "Something must be done" from him on this issue. Why? Becuase HE would have to do something.
Now, does this mean he cannot be overweight and be a leader. No. Do i really care about his weight? No. Do i care that he is intellectually honest? Yes.
There is a LIST of things that are far more dangerous to children in this country than guns. This is nothing more than political grandstanding.
Chris Christie has made a calculated decision that he must court the media for the next 4 years in order to win the Presidency. He is doing this by attacking Republicans and easy right wing media targets like the NRA. I assume he will in the next 6 months or so say something about FoxNews or Rush Limbaugh. Again...he is hitting the easy targets. HE MAY VERY WELL BE CORRECT. It might be the only way to win next time.
Or...he may tick off enough actual conservatives that he never gets a shot at all. Its a very dangerous game he is playing.
