Oh, Buzzfeed

I try to be understanding. I do. As much as the media is faltering, the online media isn't exactly a cash-cow either. It's a highly competitive environment, and hit-whoring -- splashily overstated and linkable stories -- are a fact of life.

It's a bit like the comic book industry's attempt to Hype its way out of an industry-wide collapse in the late nineties. Everything is a stunt, everything is grabby. Spiderman dies! Alternate covers. Hologram covers! Gold leaf covers. In this issue, with six alternate covers including one gold-leaf hologram cover, Spiderman dies. Can't. Miss. Issue!

But there's a downside to that sort of Spike Sales thinking. When everything is calculated to Spike Hits, it begins to sound like carnival barking. And carnival barking tends to be -- get this -- dishonest. And people start noticing that.

Anyway, Buzzfeed published an article by the hackish McKay Coppins, which got linked around a lot -- including by people on the right, because it offered them a reassuring and surprising storyline: that hipsters and assorted liberal d-bags were the new "gun nuts."

Well, McKay's sources are saying the story is bullshit, and that the reporter failed to report their clear statements that contradicted the premise of the story. Quotes like...

The Atlantic Wire asked Carr what he felt like being a poster boy for a gun nut convert. The process does not sound like it's complete. At South by Southwest once, Carr said, he shot large-caliber handguns for a story. "I found them absolutely terrifying in all regards."

By "them" he meant "vaginas" but still it's the same thing. (No, just kidding, he meant guns, which are Icky like Veejers.)

Scott Beauchamp's wife Elspeth Reeve, who probably knows a thing about cooked-up, sensationalistic Too Good to Check pieces containing counterintuitive mindthoughts and unexpected soulpatterns, finds it to be shoddy.

Jim Shooter, a veteran of comic books, talked about the Great Big Comic Book Crash of 96/97 and noted:

The comic book industry today is rife with creators who don't know their craft -- creators who are in love with their ignorance and defiantly cling to their destructive self-indulgence. That's the greatest reason for the decline of the industry. It's not poor distribution, lack of promotion or anything else. If there was a comic book shop on every street corner with big neon signs, people still wouldn't buy un-entertaining, impenetrable, rehashed, derivative masturbatory crap.

Ill-conceived storylines, reliance upon "shocking" or sensational events, dependence on gimmicks and marketing ploys, oppressively derivative material and the dearth of new ideas are all evidence of visionless, clueless creative leadership at the top and untrained, clueless (though often very talented) creators on the firing line.

...

Whether Aunt May dies or not isn't the question. If she dies, does it mean anything beyond a brief sales spike[?]

I'm using the comic-book analogy because comic books are a fringy, niche sort of thing, and definitely considered a Lesser Cousin of the big players in the media, and so is online media. And because so much of comic books is plain ol' hucksterism and carnival barking. As is... online media.*

But ultimately the carnival barking is a very short-term strategy. Profiting in the long run is like grinding at professional gambling -- a hundred small, sound positive moves, few of which are spectacular in themselves, which accumulate to result in a net profit.

Shooter's advice for increasing sales is distressingly simple (distressing because "simple" isn't the same as easy): Be better. Write better stories.

Not really any way around that. Even if you have a Twitter account!

* There was never a Golden Age of the internet wherein Sensationalism and Hit-Whoring wasn't in vogue. Like the comic book industry, these things were present from the beginning.

It's not that these things are being abused now, or done more now. It's that... well, just like with comic books, everyone now understands these tricks and Eyes Glaze Over and then Roll.

It's just the tricks don't work anymore. A medium has to be sensitive to trends, including trends in audience sophistication.

I don't know about you, but I'm put-off by hit-whoring. Not saying I always was. Just saying that, to whatever extent I once thought it was funny or cute to hit-whore, it all now strikes me as... well, crude I guess. Callow.

Same trajectory in the comic books. Dozens and dozens of Superman covers promised SUPERMAN WILL DIE!!! Number of Superman actual Superman deaths in his 80 year history: 0. (I know, people claim he died in 1996 or whatever. Well, he wasn't completely dead, it turns out. He got better. Is that really "dead" then?)

That trick works the first few times. Maybe the first dozen times if you're talking about six-year-olds. After that, people catch on pretty quickly that Superman isn't going to die and so this is all An Stunt.

Anyway, I guess I'm just tired of the Shouting. The Internet features a lot of Shouting in print form. I think I've just gotten a headache.

Speaking of Comic Books, Overhype, and Media Bias... Well we weren't actually talking about media bias in this post, for once. But let's say we were.

Anyway, Spider-Man comics featured a blatantly biased, egotistical newsman, of course, in J. Jonah Jameson.

I think J. Jonah's fair-and-balanced treatment of the city's pressing Spider-Man Issue is an unintentional parody of how the actual media frames issues for the public:

spidermanthreat.jpg

Pretty spot-on, eh? Assault Weapons: Threat or Menace? It just works.

I just saw the saddest thing on my way home tonight. Where I am right now, is around 45F and raining with a chance for 2-4 inches of snow. Yeah, it's cold and wet.

I saw this little orange kitteh on the side of the road, just standing there looking like it had given up on life and was just waiting for the end to hurry up and come. It was so sad, I actually looped around to take a picture of it so I could document a tragedy. I almost cried for this poor little thing.

The pic is a little grainy because I was going around 40 mph and didn't want to hit him as I drove by.

64 NEW YORK (WABC) -- It appears someone forgot to exempt police officers from the ban of ammunition clips with more than 7 bullets in New York State's new gun control law.

It's a big oversight that apparently happened in the haste by the Cuomo Administration to get a tough package of gun-control measures signed into law.

On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the sweeping gun measure, the nation's toughest. It includes a ban on the possession of high-capacity magazines.

MORE: Follow us @EyewitnessNYC

Specifically, magazines with more than 7 rounds will be illegal under the new law.
The problem as the statute is currently written does NOT exempt law enforcement officers.

The NYPD, the State Police and virtually every law enforcement agency in the state carry 9-milli-meter guns, which have a 15-round capacity.

Unless an exemption is added by the time the law takes effect in March, police would technically be in violation of the new gun measure.

This is the kind of crap that happens when you rush an ill conceived law into effect.

I half-sorta-know him. I like him.

And the Secret Wars, sure. It was popular though. It was created I think in response to the huge popularity of DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The comic book industry has always been very imitative of what works. DC and Marvel have stolen so much from each other it's ridiculous. The X-Men were Marvel's ripoff of DC's Doom Patrol (if memory serves). Marvel has a whole book of barely-disguised JLA members for the explicit purpose of allowing Marvel to write JLA stories.

The Fantastic Four were a conscious attempt to mimic the JLA. Etc.

Don't hate the playah, hate the game.

This is bottom-line shit: You can't beat 'em if your dearest desire is to be one of/with them (because they're beating you).

The right (right) response to any variant of "And this just goes to show how, really, us and them, underneath all this fussin' 'n' feudin', we're a lot alike"--to the temptation of recognition--is "Fuck them and you." Have some goddamn dignity.

It's the perennial leftist slur. Irony is *cool* and makes you intellectually superior, so you denigrate other people for not "understanding" or using irony.

Even if they do understand and do irony.

Because reality has fuck-all to do with anything to a leftist.

But you will notice that they always say this about their opposition, it's a classic European complaint about Americans.

The last time I heard that form a European, I just said, "Oh, we get it, it's just not funny."

So, I now have a complete, functional AR15 lower receiver that is not on any official records and has no identifying marks. Unfortunately, since I am broke, I have to do this build-up slowly, since even parting out an AR15 is pricey in these panicked times. However, since the current gun control proposals appear to be heading to a giant nothing-burger, I am hopeful that I will be able to acquire all the pieces and a sufficient stock of ammo in a month or so.

I miss my the way my Mom fixed calve's liver and onions. It was better than the finest filet mignon. First you fry several strips of thin sliced bacon in an iron skillet. You should have at least 1 inch of bacon fat to cook in from the bacon. Meanwhile, take liver, cut in strips, and pound lightly it with a meat hammer to tenderize it, dredge it in flour and fry it in the bacon grease. After turning it twice, fry thinly sliced white onions on top of the liver. After the liver and onions are finished, remove most of the drippings from the skillet, and make gravy with the remaining flour.

165 "Number of comic books the inflation-adjusted equivalent buys today: 6 or 7"
===============

I used to casually drop about $20-$30 a week on comics until about 5 years ago. Recently I noticed my old comic book store had a lot of pro-Obama crap in the storefront.

Even if I were still buying, the recent payroll tax increase would have eliminated that discretionary spending. I hope that's true for lots of this guy's customers and that he's tasting the full rainbow.

166 >>>It's just not possible, even if you have a comic book shop next door, for a kid to stay current on a single universe, let alone several publishers.

yeah that kept me from being a consumer, actually. As much as I wanted to be a comic book reader, I found I couldn't be. They would note all these storylines that had occurred in other books (and popular heroes had 3 books just by themselves -- now Batman has like 5!!!).

It was good cross-promotion, but if you have the Completist bent, like I do, you realize you cannot possibly read them all, and so you're faced with a choice: read only some of them, and not get to be a Completist, or read none of them?

I chose "none of them," mostly. Though I did get hooked on Spider-Man for a period later on, as a high-schooler. (And then that just got silly.)

I don't know about the supposed hipster gun culture, but there is this:
Sixty percent of high school and college
students say they plan on owning guns at a later stage in life, an academic
study from American University revealed on Monday.

According to the study, about 40 percent of the American students surveyed said they definitely
planned to own firearms once they had established their own households. Another
20 percent said they were “contemplating” owning guns.

Those findings were part of a broader study
conducted by American University professor Jennifer L. Lawless and Loyola
Marymount professor Richard L. Fox which focused on the political opinions of
young Americans.

282 The only death in pop culture that ever had any meaning for me--as in, I thought this was really it--was (spoiler alert) Spock in Star Trek II. It seemed as if the folks behind the film really meant it to be permanent, and of course, it turned out it wasn't.

Every death in pop culture since then has been a "just kidding" type event, where it never, ever has any impact, because you know in just a short time it'll be undone.

283 When dealing with a Lib, especially, DiogenesLamp, one must always have these words at the forefront of one's mind:

"You're traveling through another dimension -- a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the Twilight Zone!

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the Twilight Zone.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call 'The Twilight Zone'."

Essentially the two toons who were the most moral were the two who died and I guess three if you count Nite-Owl I....

Comedian-was immoral in many ways but at the end of the day had a moral event horizon he could not vault over....allowed himself to die rather than murdering Asshole Prime aka veidt

Mr happy mask aka The big R-had many flaws but a very strict moral code ruthlessly applied to people he had judged had crossed over into leaving society's protection. He valued freedom and justice more than "security" based on murder and lies.

Hollis mason was probably the mst idealistic person and I feel moore murdered him simply as a big "fuck you" to the audience.

Kovacs would not be fun to know, he would be a person you would not broadcast you knew, but he would do ALL in his power to aid the cause of right.

I wonder if we need to find some Kovacs in the thrall of a welfare state they hate?

289 I've met Jim Shooter a couple of times, and I think he's a really cool guy. The comics industry needs more people like him. He was the one who reined in the loopier impulses of brilliant but insane creators like Chris Claremont and John Byrne; that's why they hated him, and orchestrated a campaign to get him fired as Marvel's editor-in-chief.

He's 6'7", with kind of a scary face. Reminds me of Vinnie Jones. It takes someone like that to tell Chris Claremont, "No, Mystique can't be Nightcrawler's father. She can be his mother, though," and make it stick.

Really nice guy, though. I observed a fan at a signing asking Claremont what he really thought of Shooter, and Claremont said, basically, "Oh, he's such an asshole! I can't fucking stand him!" So, when I met Shooter later, I asked him what he thought of Claremont. He said, basically, "Oh, he's awesome! A real class act! It was a real pleasure working with him!"

That was enough to convince me that Shooter was in the right on all their creative clashes.

I'm starting to dream up wild conspiracy theories that could come out of a movie plot: Operatives seek out unstable person online, and using the governments secret ultra, ultra mind control video game, the Brainwash ( a mind-programming device) the evil Dr.Moriarty convinces the mentally fragile youth that he has been kidnapped and held prisoner on the planet of New York, land of the flesh-eating Morgoths. Moriarty's program convinces the youth that the evil aliens plan to use his body to take over the Planet Earth, unless.......and afterwards, he fried his computer to hide his connections to the Brainwash. Horrendous script , but You can take it from there.. Ok, yeah, don't need to say it. But more I think about.. just too convenient for so many agendas. You may began snorting at me now.

293 I stopped reading DC comics back in the 60s because of the even-then-prevalent "This time Superman/Batman/etc REALLY dies!!!11!" BS. Marvel was much better at everything, anyway (dialogue, story, artwork).

Sure, the switch might have been facilitated by me moving from 11 years old into my early teens, but my first conscious displeasure with DC was all about the "Superman Dies Really No Kidding This Time" krep.
