| Shock: "40% of Gun Sales Aren't Subject to a Background Check" Figure Cited by Obama is CrankI cited the 40% number too, in comments. I fell for it. First of all, the figure comes from a Bloomberg study-- which is already a mark against its credibility. Second of all, the 40% figure they cite doesn't even apply to all gun sales, but rather gun re-sales. Thus, 40% doesn't apply to all guns, new and old, but only to the old category. Furthermore:The dubious statistic of guns that avoided background checks — which is actually 36 percent — comes from a small 251-person survey on gun sales two decades ago, very early in the Clinton administration. Most of the survey covered sales before the Brady Act instituted mandatory federal background checks in early 1994. If that alone didn’t make the number invalid, the federal survey simply asked buyers if they thought they were buying from a licensed firearms dealer. While all Federal Firearm Licensees do background checks, only those perceived as being FFLs were counted.... Comments1

6) Armed guards did nothing to stop the Columbine massacre, so they don't work.
A: This is the worst and most dishonest "argument" out there. First, the armed guard in Columbine was outside of the school. And there was also a motorcycle cop nearby who joined in to help. But since the cop didn't stop it as well, perhaps we should disarm him too, eh? But I digress. The armed guard started firing shots in the parking lot against the shooters. The shooters ran away from him and into the school, where the massacre really began. There were several students in the parking lot that were shot that were probably saved by that armed guard. So your argument is fucked right there. Moreover, pre-Columbine the standard police procedure was to establish a perimeter and see if you could talk to the shooter. In other words, the armed guard and the cop didn't rush into the school immediately. If they had done so, countless other lives may have been saved. After Columbine the procedure is to confront the shooter immediately. Another dishonest part of this argument. And finally, in Columbine the original plan was to blow up the cafeteria. They put two "propane bombs" in the cafeteria and waited outside for them to go off. Experts estimate that around 500 kids and adults would have been killed. But their remote timers malfunctioned and that's why they went to Plan B which was the shooting spree. Do we ever, ever hear about "propane control." And btw, this all happened right in the middle of the assault weapons ban. Posted by: Prescient11 at January 17, 2013 01:24 PM (tVTLU) 56

"....and shall not be infringed." There is a reason why the Founders added that to the 2nd Amendment...and used the word 'infringed'...instead of other words, like 'encroached'. 'Infringe' comes from the Latin word infringere...which means to 'weaken, break, or trangress upon'. It was the strongest, most concise word that they could think of, to convey their meaning. 7) The NRA is a shady organization run by gun nuts and nazis.
The NRA was originally founded for several purposes, one was how to teach the civilian population how to shoot better as apparently Union troops couldn't shoot for shit and the other purpose was to provide firearms for black citizens in the South so that they could protect themselves. And this was in the 1800s. Quite laudable goals. Further, after Dunkirk and the British retreat, the Nazis were literally at the Brits doorstep threatening to take over. But the people had no fucking guns. The NRA sent out alerts to its membership asking them to donate a weapon to send over to the British to help fight the nazis. The NRA is a fantastic organization, and has been a defender of our freedoms, and the world's freedom for over a hundred years. Posted by: Prescient11 at January 17, 2013 01:29 PM (tVTLU) 77

So no, the US will never get it back. But that is the way ALL of those IMF loans to third world shit holes go. It is foreign aid without being labeled as foreign aid which the public hates. 81As a gun newbie, I was just looking at a pistol that fires .410 shot and .45 cal bullets IMO, The Judge and SW's copy are solutions in search of a problem. They also don't shoot either load well because the barrel rifling is a compromise designed to accommodate two very different things. If this is your first gun, this is (obviously) a real bad time to be in the market. My suggestion is to, first, go see what calibers of ammo are even available and, second, choose a firearm based on that. It sucks, but that's where we are. From what I've seen on the shelves locally, your best handgun options will be a .357/.38 revolver or a semiauto in one of the more expensive, recoilly, and exotic calibers like 10mm or 357 Sig. The Judge is fun to shoot, just not very practical unless you are using certain ammo. Go to youtube, look up Hickok45's review of the Judge. Most people I know either use it as a bedside gun loaded with PDX or use it as a snake gun. This all brings up another point: for the next Sunday Gun Thread, Hickok45 and his videos need to be featured. As a gun newbie, I was just looking at a pistol that fires .410 shot and .45 cal bullets (Taurus, I think). I want one. Posted by: J.J. Sefton For you gun noobs and for anyone else that doesn't know, www.boxotruth.com is the single best source for terminal ballistics at the practical level. The Judge sucks balls. 188, look for a lever action .357, you can shoot .38 and .357 from it, use the same rounds in your future handgun (with lots of testing to get a matched set), and it might be the only thing left for sale in NY, might. Someone should come out with a mag tube block to make it NY legal soon.

Posted by: imp at January 17, 2013 02:05 PM (UaxA0) I own the Taurus PT-92, which is more or less a clone of the Baretta 92 military standard 9mm. Braztech was contracted by Baretta at one time to fulfill its Brazillian military orders, and bought the licensing necessary to make the PT-92. It's a marvelous pistol, one of the best I own. Hundreds of rounds downrange without a single FTF. Exceedingly accurate. I saw box-of-truth's Judge review, and tend to disagree with his conclusions. In my view, the Judge is clearly, obviouslyan up-close and personal weapon, and a center mass hit using.410 double-or triple buck or .45 LC at 5 yards or lesswould make for adevastating wound. The concept is old-news, though. Cobray was making those (albeit primitive and poorly fitted) hand-held .410 derringers back in the 90's. Posted by: troyriser at January 17, 2013 02:42 PM (vtiE6) 244

"Another source of guns for the underground economy consists of unregulated secondary market sales, estimated to be on the order of 2 to 3 million per year (Cook and Ludwig, 1996). Organised gun shows appear to account for just a small share of all secondary market transactions, including those involving criminals (Wright and Rossi, 1994; Cook and Ludwig, 1996). In addition to secondary market sales, guns may be loaned out among friends and relatives." (p. 561)

If we use 2-3 million as a baseline for non-FFL transfers during the last couple of years, then we can use NIC checks as a rough estimate about these numbers.
Using an average of 2008-2012 NIC's checks which average about 12 million potential gun sales during that time, then non-FFL tranfers represent 16-25 percent of all transfers at most. Some of those transfers involve CR license holders which do not have to go through the background check system because they are licensees. Informal transfers such as gifts, inheritance, loans, also represent a fairly large percentage of those remaining. Let us say about half of the 2-3 million transfers are totally legal. Thus, perhaps 500,000 (the estimate in the article above of stolen weapons per year) plus 500,000-1 million transfers between relative strangers occur.--of these transfers, a certain percentage is between straw buyers and ineligibles. Since transferring a firearm to a known disqualified person is a felony already, these transfers will take place anyway regardless of supposedly including them in a background check. This would simply add another penalty to someone who already is disregarding the law. My lazy swag guess is roughly 500,000 to 1 million transfers occur that are illegal in nature. Selling stolen firearms is a crime, straw buying guns for ineligibles is a crime. Thus, the only supposed benefit of expanded NIC checks is to catch stranger to stranger legal sales that will subsequently be used in a crime. This might actually affect a relatively small number of crimes by discouraging such sales. A far easier task would be allow gun sellers of private sales to use form 4473 for buyers and copies given to the buyer and kept by the seller, the other might be voluntary access to the NIC phone system for individuals to clear transactions. Many sellers in my neck of the woods, require buyers to have a concealed carry permit and a driver's license to make the sale despite no legal requirement to do so.
