If you don't see a number, you might just be color-blind or intoxicated or possibly both. But don't feel so bad - there may good evolutionary reasons for this.
Answers: You should see - Even the Chinese Don't Want Chinese Baby Food Well you can only kill pets and babies for so long with contaminated food before you get a bad reputation: A surge in sales of one of Australia's most popular brands of infant formula has led to an unusual sight for this wealthy nation: barren shelves in the baby aisle and even rationing of baby food in some leading retail outlets. In 2009, the Chinese government executed two milk manufactures for selling chemically tainted milk powder that lead to the deaths of six children, and in June 2012 the country's largest milk maker had to recall six months' worth of milk. The Beginning: Democrat Congressman Proposes Repeal of 22nd Amendment Crazy as it is, however, it's not a joke: Rep. Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.) on Friday re-introduced as H.J. 15 the same bill he offered last year, "Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment" - i.e., to end the two-term limit on the presidency, enabling Obama to be "President fo Life." Viva El Presidente Obama! Life When You're NOT David Gregory The Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) inquiry into whether NBC's David Gregory possession on national TV of an illegal 30-round "high-capacity" magazine has been ongoing for three weeks. Meanwhile, U.S. Army veteran James Brinkley is still grappling with the fallout from his arrest last year on the same charge. The Great User Interface FAIL of Windows 8 In the three decades that graphical user interfaces have been around a lot has been learned about what works and what doesn't and how to make a good GUI. Microsoft seems to have thrown out much of these lessons when they created the UI for Windows 8. I wouldn't quite call it unusable since with enough time on it you can learn all the quirks and wierdnesses. But the fact that you have to re-learn so much and can't just guess at it is a FAIL. All right morons. Time for the annual AoSHQ circular hernia check-up. Everyone form a big circle.
1. Put a latex glove on your left hand 2. Lower your trousers to your knees 3. Place your left hand on the testicles of the man or woman to your immediate left 4. Turn your head to the right 5. All together now- cough. 6. Pull up your pants 7. Discard of the latex gloves on your way out the door. 8. Report any detected hernias to Vic prior to tomorrow's Morning Headlines 9. It is not, repeat, not acceptable to ask for anyone's phone number following this procedure, remember we are professionals! That is all. Carry on! Apparently the guy who proposed the repeal of the 22nd amendment NY 15th District Rep Jose Serrano (D) has proposed this before. In 97, 99, 01, 03, 05, 07, 09, 11 however all the other time it has never gotten past the committee phase. It seems to be some strange fetish this guy haves regardless who is president. Then again he also invited Hugo Chavez to speak in his district, so the guy just dictators it seems.

Google’s woes at the hands of Australian courts continue, with the State of South Australia's District Court ordering it to hand over the identities of anonymous bloggers in a defamation case. Former Australian Football League player player Shane Radbone sought the identity of bloggers who he says have defamed him. Although Google deleted the blogs in question, he launched the action in early December 2012 to identify the bloggers. The blogs, posted on Google’s Blogger.com, accused him of unethical practices and incompetence, which Rathbone’s lawyer described as both defamatory and damaging to Rathbone’s business. This is interesting - link to gun owners (self-reported) by state. The data is kind of old, but I found the results somewhat surprising. I wonder if it's simply that ppl from some states (UT, TX) refused to give a straight answer about their gun ownership.

@110 Stoeger is a good gun, that's a good price, but you might not like the pistol grip setup. With high brass, the recoil is pronounced. So, I throw my back out and go to the doctor. They tell me that I don't have a deductible because I've already met my $1700 deductible for 2013.
What? This is only my second doctor's appt this year. I call my insurance company and find out it's because my recent mail-in Rx charge is $1850. The 90 day prescription for Abilify alone, the negotiated rate, is $1700. $1700. Nobody even called to warn me, they were just going to charge it to my AMEX as if it were a $50 prescription. Can you imagine?! What if I had told them, the mail-in company, to put it on my debit card? I would have had $1850 go kaput! This, on top of the fact that I am out of one of my meds because the entire order was held up while they contacted my doctor to tell him that another of the meds, Luvox, isn't even covered under my plan. What a crock of shit. I'm going to have to finance my fucking prescriptions. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 15, 2013 11:16 PM (piMMO) 176

"45 Real Chinese food sucks for adults too.
Posted by: Rule #2" One of my brothers had to go to China a couple of times years ago on business. He said that if you actually liked food that they served you, you just ate it and and didn't ask what it was. He also told the story that they were on a train and the business people were really proud to give him a scrawny cooked chicken with its head still on. They don't eat the amount of meat that we do, and something like that is a real luxury to them. Also, he had to wear long underwear under his suit because they don't heat their buildings in the winter. He also said that places like Peking were so crowded that he felt closed in. 194 Thanks, Jake in ID. Looking at a pump action. Seems to me the shot wouldn't affect the bayonet if there was a 1-2 inch offset.
Posted by: Infidel at January 15, 2013 11:21 PM (bzOLE) Depending on the shotgun - but I imagine you won't have an *impact* unless the bayonet is like a spear or something. It will get dirty, though. On full-length-tube guns *designed* for a bayonet, it will attach to the tube and be offset anyway. If it's making a hand-sized group at 7-15 yards depending on choke, it's not going to spread much a few inches from the muzzle. I've never seen that happen, anyway, but I ain't seen everything in the world. Morans: The AR 15 is the most popular rifle in America. Under the analysis of the Supreme Court in Heller, it seems that they would have no right to mandate an out and out ban of such a weapon, given its popularity with the American people. New York Republican Party Commits Suicide
New York Gov. Andrew “Madness” Cuomo, has successfully pushed through his anti-civil liberties gun control legislation. The most odious aspect was the limiting of magazines to only seven bullets since most semi-auto pistols have magazines that carry at least ten, Even the venerable M1911 carried eight! While this is a travesty for the millions of law-abiding gun owners in the state of New York, it also sounds the death knell for the Republican Party in the state of New York. All of the GOP turncoats were from New York city or Long Island. All of the upstate Republicans voted NAY. So I walked into work yesterday to discover that the temperatures had caused a pipe to burst in our new building, and my office was flooded. The carpets are dry today, but the walls are soaked. Unfortunately they can't start drilling holes and pulling drywall until they get an asbestos study, even though the building is less than a year old. After that it will probably be a couple of weeks before they can get a work order through to replace the drywall. FML

Huh, the NFL Network talking heads are having the Chiefs pick Joeckel #1 in their mock draft. It's early as hell, and I agree that he's the best overall player before the Combine and Senior Bowl have even begun, but the Chiefs *have to* pick and cultivate a QB at that spot. With the exceptions (due to injuries) of Brees and P. Manning, all the top QBs now play for the team that drafted them, and except for Aaron Rodgers they all started from the get-go. (See how Russell Wilson beat out Flynn, the highly paid free agent.) Please Chiefs, pick Geno Smith!

I don't really like Windows 8 but it's really no different than XP, Vista or 7, just go straight to the desktop and it's the same as it always was with the only difference being the Start button is now the goofy slide bar and that's explained to you as you install it. So yeah, i haven't found much use for the metro apps but the desktop is fine.

One thing I got from old-timey colorblind tests was that there were some that registered as one number to people with standard vision, but registered as another different number to the colorblind.....and if you defocused your eyes *just* *right*, you could see the alternate number.
This wouldn't work in the top left one -- there's not enough variation. But I'm thinking that the bottom left might have a 35 in there if you look at the more teal-like greens v. the more olive ones. Posted by: cthulhu at January 15, 2013 11:58 PM (kaalw) 319

If you start saying "It's ok to ignore the 2nd Amendment" then what's to stop someone from saying the same thing about the First, or the Fifth, or any other amendment?

The thing about Metro is, is that it isn't meant for power users or people who are used to the old GUI.
It is designed for tablets, phones, &c. that are mainly used by kids and teens. My sister is a teacher and apparently Metro is intuitive to use for them. Frankly, I think that Microsoft was smart to include both, and allow you to toggle between the two. The only real downside is the lack of Þe Olde Start Menu, but you can get that back by simply disabling the Metro GUI, or emulating most of it by adding the correct folder to the taskbar. Alternatively, there are third party extensions that don't involve messing with the system, since the functionality of the Start Menu is still there in Windows 8,a nd you just have to access it. She said she has kids, feeds them, drives them etc and then watches the ten o'clock local news and had heard about what happened in Benghazi at some point that day and made herself watch all of the ten o'clock news. The local news gave the entire incident 1 minute and 12 seconds. She said they only said an American Ambassador and three others were killed there and then said something to the next host that they're always killing each other over there and gave five plus minutes to puppies found by the road! I never watch the local news, I switch between it and Fox & Friends during the week to avoid commercials. Posted by: CarolT at January 16, 2013 12:44 AM (z4WKX) 372

Wow, that Windows 8 critique was an utter pile of steaming bullshit. The guy claims to be technically competent but he spent ten minutes blaming Microsoft because his Acer laptop had a defective touchpad. That is the only explanation I can think of to explain his claim of things happening spontaneously without intent on his part. I've used Win8 on about 30 different machines (and multiple units of the same model) and even the worst of them didn't give me the kind of problems he claimed. He also spent quite a lot of time being baffled by an interface I've watched five year olds have no difficulty using.
Nor is he apparently much on the learning new things front. I think it took me five minutes to figure out the essential controls for the new interface additions the first time I installed the Consumer Preview. And that was before they had a tutorial on using the hot corners on first boot and when creating a new user. Something Mr. Boyko seems to have neglected to pay attention to. Nor was there a plethora of tutorial articles on the web as there would be a few weeks later. Nor does dragging in Jakob Nielsen, who I've always thought full of crap, into it make it any more convincing. The desktop still employs as many Windows as you like. You can pretty much ignore the Start Screen for everything but launching apps and never use Modern UI apps if you choose. The system didn't come with an OS disc? So what? This has been common since Vista and is not a new development. New consumer system typically pester you almost immediately to burn a disc using your own media. (Which gives you an idea of how ridiculously tight the margins are in the PC business.) This is something I've been dealing with since 2007 but this guy claims to be up on things. I can get it if people who are set in their way don't like the changes in Win8 but it's hard for me to get excited when I can remember users who literally were screaming over having their ancient XP box replaced with a Win7 machine. You could just throw a new theme on their old XP system and they'd be completely lost. And those same people freaked when XP replaced their Win98 system. Win8 is a bigger change but it just isn't especially hard to learn. 90% of what a existing Windows user needs to know can be described in a single page of text. From there it's just a matter of the more sophisticated users learning the better shortcuts. I can think of a lot of ways to improve Win8 but they're mostly stuff that won't matter to the first time user as they'd add potential complexity. Paul Thurrot has a series of articles on his site that covers a lot of the same ground. The biggest thing I want is better organizational options for the Start Screen. Not only are folders badly needed, they should be smarter than existing desktop folders. For example, if I create a Games folder, I want the metadata supplied by the Store to be used to automatically place a newly downloaded game in that folder. There is much that can be done to improve but the idea that the product is in need for a recall reflects more on Mr. Boyko's lack of cognitive ability than anything else. I cannot imagine hiring him for any kind of technical position. Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 12:59 AM (kcfmt) 398

The problem is that most people just want things to work and know how they work, especially when it is at the workplace. If yo have to spend any amount of time having to teach people to relearn how to do things, then that is a problem. Personally, I just don't care for Metro. It might be fine on a phone or a small tablet, but for power usage it is horrid. With the classic interface, you can have multiple windows and programs on at the same time and all readily accessible with a flick of the wrist. You just can't get the usability with Metro, Android, iPad, &c. The best I've seen for tablet like interfaces that has functionality like more classic GUIs is Gnome 3, though as a stand alone desktop computer I prefer Gnome 1 or 2... or KDE, or pretty much most other ones for Linux. If one of us kids was with him, we could tell him. We all apparently got Mom's retinas. If he was by himself, he'd stop at the light. If drivers behind him blew their horns, he knew it was green.

We think of politics as secondary to our lives. They think of it as primary.
We bring our culture to politics, politics *is* their culture. We do it part time, they do it full time - because they depend on it. We depend on limited government, they depend on unlimited government. We can be distracted because we're interested in other things. They're really not. Ever talk to a dyed-in-the-wool leftist activist about something other than their politics? How long did it last before the politics crept in? That's why they can't make a movie or a show or do sports broadcasts or anything without slipping in a dig or two or twelve. It's *everything* to them. And they tell us this, if you listen. Which we really don't, culturally. I don't know that we *can* become what they are in that sense, and I don't know that it wouldn't be as bad or worse. I do know what history says happens next if they don't get their leash yanked but good. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 01:12 AM (bxiXv) 412

Yeah, I never got why libtards are against big business, but have no prob with big government.
Posted by: kalneva at January 16, 2013 12:06 AM (S+/pH) === I am always frustrated when I see this stuff. The left LOVES big biz. It is small biz that they hate. GE/Comcast own NBC. Time Warner owns CNN. Westinghouse bought and folded itself into CBS. Carlos Slim bought a huge chunk of NYT. Berkshire Hathaway (Buffett) bought at least 5% of the WashPo. And if I knew all the places Soros has his fingers I would attempt to note that, too. Sure -- the left loves to SAY they are anti-big-biz, but I can't see any reason to believe them. Hell, a central feature of Obummercare is to force people to buy private insurance from -- you guessed it -- big businesses. The rest of the provisions were written to smack around private medical practices, which are (for the most part) small biz's. A huge number of doctors will be forced to give up their own practices and go to work for the large vendors. Then, follow the regulation stuff. Most regulations make it easier for big biz to thrive because the regs tend to severely punish their chief problem -- which is their small biz competitors. Finally, look at the campaign contributions. NFIB -- goes right. Wall Street -- goes left every time. Posted by: jc at January 16, 2013 01:19 AM (PlzOe) 419

But on a desktop system you don't have any requirement to use Metro apps. People keep making it sound like they're being forced to work in Metro when it just isn't true. A power user isn't going to buy an ARM tablet specifically because they want the x86 app library in addition to new stuff. But they'd be well advised to use Modern UI apps for as much as possible for the purpose of battery life. The Tools section on the Windows store is starting to get some decent little utilities. We needed to buy several Lenovo laptops for use on site at CES where we were supporting 4 different Lenovo locations in addition to other jobs. Lenovo doesn't want non-Lenovo machines used in their event space understandably, so we made the investment and part of prepping them was using Ninite to get a bunch of desktop stuff installed. But once I'd selected an array of free items from the Windows store on one laptop and was using the same account on all three, it took just one command to install the same set of apps on the other units. If you make use of cloud storage you can migrate to a new machine pretty quickly just by logging in and doing a few fast commands. For a power user there is much desirable about Win8 that would mean much to non-technical users. Like the new Task Manager that lets you find out a lot more about what is happening under the hood without a third party tool. Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 01:23 AM (kcfmt) 425

The troll thing is another thing. Some of the "community organizers" serve the role of "trolls" in the larger society, whether it's "plants" on the "right" who say outrageous crap or journalists who distract from an issue by saying outrageous crap or starting or pushing a nothing story.
There are more types, but that's an idea. And enough people can't resist engaging the distraction (like the troll) that everyone is distracted. People have been yanked away from the issue of defying court orders on gulf drilling, fast and furious, and now Benghazi - and probably a hundred other things including vote fraud and mass cronyism, not to mention debt and budgets. They've managed to turn scandals into bread and circuses. At least it's streamlined things a bit. Too bad we're so scattered, disorganized, and on the whole ill-informed and ill-equipped to cope with a concerted campaign to bankrupt us into compliance. The new Vette. Don't love it, don't hate it. It looks like a Viper mated to a Camaro ... the Viparo
Just doesn't make me say wow. Some commenters on the Top Gear site say it looks like it was put designed by committee and thrown together from a parts bin That will most likely be the verdict when the car is reviewed on the show this upcoming season From a comment on the article; It's Frankenstein's monster. A parts bin nightmare. It's got the Viper's grill, Evora's profile and windows, the Ferrari's headlights, the Camaro's taillights, the Chrysler 300's dash and steering wheel, the McLaren MP4's parking break, the 458's cluster, etc, etc. It feels like one of those contests where you win a prize for guessing where all the pieces should go. And for God's sake - 106 horsepower LESS than the Camaro that costs less. Really? Awful to the power of ten. Posted by: kbdabear at January 16, 2013 02:00 AM (wwsoB) 466

Exactly right it's about creating barriers to entry. Newer, smaller firms typically innovate more and gain market share much quicker. Much easier to pay the state to create artificial barriers that reduce the ability to enter a market. My favorite is the licensing of hairdressers. Why the crap do we need to test and license freaking barbers? It's not like medical school here but they don't want to have a glut of salons lowering the price so boom barrier to entry. I keep a bunch of different ISO files for various OEM specific versions of Windows. When somebody brings me a machine that has so many different infections it's impossible to say just which is actually controlling the system, it's easier just to nuke it all and reinstall from orbit. Having the correct OEM version avoids the whole activation issue. This is driven by a BIOS subsection called SLIC. Most machines that shipped with Vista have the same SLIC version as Win7, so a free upgrade on a name brand machine is easily done. The latest generation have SLIC 2.3, so you cannot just throw Win8 on a Win7 machine. This is inadvisable for laptops anyway. The great majority of Win7 laptops didn't have the class of touchpad Win8 really wants to work right. Even a lot of cheap machines shipped with Win8 have crap touchpads and are better used with a mouse or a USB touchpad that speaks multitouch. The low price machines will start catching up the proper spec around the middle of the year. (I suspect people are sensing this based on past transitions and that is one reason PC sales are way down.) Apple laptop aren't more expensive just because Apple likes high margins. You have to spend comparably right now on the PC side to get a machine that really supports the OS. What I'm looking forward to is the coming touch everywhere transition. Laptops running Win8 with a touchscreen can be really nice because you can use whatever input is right for the moment. On desktops touch is going to start showing up on a lot of monitors but we'll also see Kinect like sensors, extending the integrated webcam, so that gestures can be used without reaching all the way to the monitor. Again, not replacing existing input options but adding to them. There are some gestures that are handy on a desktop and others that you'd never want to do even if they're second nature when using a laptop. I ran into one such FSA yo-yo two years ago at Ford dealership. Brand spanking new GT500, signed on the dotted line, and then was trying to claim there was a defect so he wouldn't have to pay $1,300/month on the note.
The alleged defect was how the vinyl racing stripe decals are laid in sections. So where the sections meet there is about 1mm over lap. So I show up in my 08 GT500 for an oil change. Not knowing this little drama was going on. And the service manager and mechanic are going 'you got a problem up here' Thinking they are talking the road chips in the stripes, "I know I have a few chips in the stripes.' Manager answers, 'talking about this defect.' Now I am worried. 'What defect?' And manager points out the overlap. And I say, 'it was like that when I bought it.' That is when I learned of the fool with the 2010 GT500 and the $1,300 note. I had no sympathy for that idiot and was happy I ruined his attempt to welch. Posted by: weft cut-loop at January 16, 2013 02:47 AM (QKbPo) I don't dislike Malor as much as some people do, but I know one thing about the future - whatever happens, it will catch him off-guard. Because he works in the system, he believes it's real and not a shadow construct. As to which option to take, it doesn't matter which one we take if we don't take any of them. And the first step to take is to move past the bomb-throwers, ignore them, marginalize them, walk on by without comment. And I'm not just talking about the internet. Newt is half-right (and sometimes more) - punching back gets the applause and energizes the base. But you have to follow it with the correction or just the facts (which he sometimes does) and not let the bad guys get away with it. He was a grievously flawed advocate in other ways, but as a communicator people needed to learn from him - but people are kind of dumb that way. Well, it's more complicated than that. Of course, it doesn't help that Nvidia are douche bags who have gotten way too cocky with the tumble of AMD Posted by: The Dude at January 16, 2013 03:11 AM (vJdyz) 535

Posted by: Richard at January 16, 2013 03:10 AM (bplbs) Is a long story. Between cultural conditioning and mfm corruption and elite schools and their buddy system and acculturation inside the bureaucracy and DC and the state capitols and the sweet money-honey-power train once they get a taste from the inside... we're kind of boned. I can never find the old study from years ago about attitudes of the general public to the size and functions of government as compared to the attitudes of politicians and bureaucrats from *either* party... basically inside the beltway *everyone* thinks the government should be bigger and more powerful than *everyone* outside. Because they live there, it's not just their job it's their whole life, and they're surrounded every day by people for whom it is their whole life. They are literally living in a different culture. Most people will adapt more or less to the culture of the place they live in, unless they're crazed ideologues or shut-ins. We send people to the State house and they start getting acculturated by the media and the bureaucrats, the process is that much faster in DC. Honestly I think we need to make them all work from home. And all non-national-security conversations need to be recorded and transcribed. And they need to not be surrounded by a layer of bureaucrats. The Federal government may have some proscriptions against some political activities, but they work with and talk to politicians almost every day. They're the biggest lobbying group in the world and they have priority access. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 03:19 AM (bxiXv) 542

One big problem is the innate human desire to be liked. At a time when we need utter hardasses we instead have politicians trying to win affection. An unrelenting stream of gags that assume republicans are evil subhumans out of Hollywood has an effect. There are some who are immune but not enough. What this country desperately needs is to become an electorate of adults. Barring that, we need elected officials who are like the father you hated at 16 but had realized was right about nearly everything by the time you were 25. Be a good way to save cash in the long run by cutting out the middle man. And they're flush with money. And not as an accident, but as a deliberate, detailed, and *written* plan that the majority of people are vaguely aware of if at all, and consider either largely a myth or simply a fact out of their control. It's like I'm standing on a ship, and everyone around me is shouting "Sharks, there's no such thing as sharks, go for a swim!" Maybe not the best metaphor, but whatever. People who isolate themselves can see other perspectives - but they're isolated! And thus, don't have much impact. Also, partly because of nature and partly because of "the system" of "social trainers" we've had, the people who end up in power on "our side" are the kind of bow and scrape and seek approval. Hardasses are weeded out early on. We even let them run our debates for Pete's sake. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 03:46 AM (bxiXv) 560

Posted by: The Dude at January 16, 2013 03:56 AM (vJdyz) AMD still has 27 of the top 30 price/performance graded CPUs. Some of those are freaks of low pricing, but unless you have to have THE FASTEST your price/performance point is going to have three letters. I can't spend $2000 or $1000 or even $500 on a processor. AMD gets me up into the high-end (not the top, admittedly) for less than $200. If money were no object, I would probably build an Intel system. But it is. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 04:06 AM (bxiXv) 566
I don't see MS buying AMD unless they were prepared to make a compelte break with Intel, which could get incredibly messy due to the cross-licensing stuff. But with Samsung owning AMD and integrating it into their empire, it could have a relationship with MS much like it has with Apple, but with less litigation. After all, if Samsung thinks it can make a better machine, Microsoft would just say cool, here's the OS license terms, let 'er rip. Which is already happening with the ATIV tablet, at least overseas.

The price difference is fairly minor while the performance is forever. I have two systems on a KVM at my desk. The older is a Phenom IIx4 and the more recent is an Ivy Bridge Core i5 system. Much of the difference is purely a matter of age. The Core i5 has native USB 3.0, SATA-3, etc. The big difference is the SSD in the newer machine for OS and app storage. The difference in cost for all of the parts to build each was only about $150 and over half of that was for the SSD. A concurrent AMD build would have had better integrated video but significantly less CPU performance. I can always drop a cheap video card in later to bolster that. (Not a big need since I do nearly all of my gaming on consoles. The HD4000 GPU on the Core i5 is more than adequate for my PC needs.) Another AMD system I have is the laptop I bought to serve as a Windows 8 test platform. It's an A6 APU system. The price difference mattered a bit more there but at the time it was the top chip for the APU line and if CPU performance had been an issue it would have been stomped by a Core i5 system costing only about $100 more. The A8 and A10 have closed the gap somewhat since then, especially since you cannot easily upgrade a laptop's video. But then Haswell laptops are looming on the horizon. If AMD was able to consistently have a 20% lower bill of materials for less than a 10% difference in CPU performance, they'd be in better shape, even with the market slump. But they don't have those numbers. Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 04:23 AM (kcfmt) 571

Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 04:23 AM (kcfmt) Minor to you. Maybe if I get fully back on my figurative feet I will care less, or the situation will have changed by then. The fastest i5 I see is 20+ percent slower than and 10+% more expensive than the FX8350. Obviously simple benchmarks aren't everything, and if the right price-performance point was hit I'd consider an Intel system - they just don't seem to feel the need to go that low. Also, at least when I've been shopping, the motherboards seem to be cheaper on the AMD side, and that adds up as well. Mind you, the last time I built a system was a few or four years ago, so if I hit the sales now it might turn out differently. I also kind of loathe consoles (no pointing ability), so I game on PC. What's going on with that?
Posted by: otho at January 16, 2013 05:03 AM (yBF/9) With which, steam? There's the "steam console" thing dude talked about, which is kind of Steam trying to get into the console market with an "open standard" HTPC with various levels of performance based on minimum hardware, make by third parties and licensed. Then there's the current "big picture" marketing thing taking up part of my interface where they're trying a marketing push on console-style games - basically what I try to avoid. It seems one of the big PC game centers is preemptively surrendering to the console market. I know some people love to lean back in their couch to play games, but the kind of games I like to play suck ass when you can't *point*, and consoles controllers can't point. BTW a joystick is not a pointing device, it's a lever and a *moving* device. There are about 10 other things I don't like about console games, from linearity and short playtimes to railroading and contextual controls, but it looks like the market is once again swinging that way. If it finally falls over, maybe I'll find something more productive to do. Probably not. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 05:16 AM (bxiXv) 585

Thing to keep in mind about the motherboards is how little was built-in back then. I can't remember the last time I had to buy a NIC. I've got so many left over from organ donor old machines and so rarely have the need to add one to a machine that came with it already on the board. For most of our recent pfSense boxes (OSS router package we use for event services) the boards have dual NICs as standard. If you go really far back, remember having to buy those ISA cards referred to as 1P2SG? This stood for 1 parallel port, 2 serial ports, and one joystick port. Because those basic amenities weren't included on the motherboard. It had a keyboard port and... it had a keyboard port. If you're a performance perfectionist there is still a place for dedicated sound cards and NICs but fewer builders bother anymore as the built-in functions are pretty good. The parts list for building a new machine is a fair bit shorter than it was in the 90s and that saves a fair chunk of cost. Which the SSD in turn adds back. A couple years ago we had a job installing a network in a Pasadena college campus that had been shut down suddenly many years ago. Something to do with it evangelical church owners. The place had a kind of apocalyptic look in that it shut down on such short notice that a lot of people didn't even get to clear out their desks. We found, among so much else, a Friday Fry's ad from 1998 IIRC. It had things like a 4 GB hard drive on the front page for some absurd price higher than I'd pay for all but the highest capacity today. But we were glad to get them for that price back then. Also, huge freaking beef with me and something I ran into a lot with the holiday steam sale, why the actual fuck can't people let you configure controls anymore? I can't tell you how many of these games either won't let you change controls or blocks out important parts of the keyboard. Skyrim did that too, I had to hack the config files. FNV I used AutoHotkey rather than rewrite their damned interface. And even when they do let you change controls, the screen prompts are wrong. Seriously? This is your work product? Part of the problem is they're skimping like hell because they're afraid of raising prices. Games in the 90s were $50, now it's 20 years of inflation later and they're still $50. So they skimp. The games are still "prettier" because of technology but they're shorter or have terrible quality control issues. Skyrim should have cost $150... and should have been finished when they released it. Even the modders haven't fixed most of the interface bugs (because they used expensive proprietary software for the interface and tied it too deep in the engine). Valve thinks there is a massive untapped market for being the clearing house for independent game developers to reach their customers. A big problem with the PC gaming realm is the same versatility that made the PC a powerful platform to pick up where machines like the Amiga left off, also made it a lot more complex and difficult for the average consumer to get into. The console companies have long known they could grab a big piece of the PC gaming market by just offering alternate controls more suited for desktop use but greatly feared creating confusion in their native market. I've always felt Microsoft missed a big bet by not supporting more control types on the original Xbox and encouraging more ports of PC games of the sort that are rarely seen on consoles. (The original Xbox's motherboard had locations for enough RAM chips to give it 128 MB, which would have been another huge advantage but they had to make a last minute decision based on where pricing sat when they had to commit to a production order.) The primary issue for most games would be to make sure they were playable on a NTSC display. But they were too sensitive to accusations of the Xbox just being a PC in console clothing and so only allowed it to receive software in line with a console audience. Valve was one of the companies porting suitable PC games to the Xbox and I'm sure the potential has been on Gabe Newell's mind ever since, gaining importance as the digital download market blossomed. Can a living room PC add tens of millions of consumers to Steam's revenue? Can they make it work for those who'd like to play PC type game but with console ease of use? Or will they just be competing with consoles with their primary asset being free access to developers with little or no content control? Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 05:44 AM (kcfmt) 598
Oh man are you missing out if you haven't played any racing games in awhile, the last year has been super solid on what has come out or is about to come out.
Posted by: The dude at January 16, 2013 05:35 AM (vJdyz) AFAICT I'd need a wheel, everybody uses WASD or arrow keys on the PC and that's whack. Considering how cheap ssd has become, it's not really in the luxury department any more. Posted by: The dude at January 16, 2013 05:38 AM (vJdyz) Well, I spent all my savings on medicine. I just don't know that I'm in enough of a hurry to spend on 128Gb what I could spend on 2Tb storage. I just lost 1Tb and replaced it with a scrounged 500Gb and moved some crap around. I would probably buy a CPU and MB and video card and memory and more HD space first, and I can't afford them (not responsibly). So here we are, behind the times. Mero, I run a 120gb ssd for games and OS, I have 10tb of spinny spinny drives for movies.

Could always go DFGT till you can afford a used or new G27 ( which newegg has been running consistant sales at $200) and throw in the spring mod for another $30. Or step up to a nice Fanatec setup

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 16, 2013 05:41 AM I hear that. It's not just nostalgia that keeps me playing the old games. They're much better. I've heard that part of it is because back then, online mode was a bonus, a added extra, not the main thing. But developers make them primarliy for multiplayer now andSP is an afterthought, sort of. I could be wrong,I don't have much technical insight, but, I've kind of followed the big picture, over the years. Posted by: otho at January 16, 2013 05:55 AM (yBF/9) 603

Yeah, I still wish someone would do that. Can a living room PC add tens of millions of consumers to Steam's revenue? Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 05:44 AM (kcfmt) Probably not because of the apocalypse, no because they diverge in style so much, yes but it won't matter because of the apocalypse. Honestly I think we are headed, for reasons of smartphone and console popularity, MMO popularity, and revenue models, for a market where most games are either social nickel-and-dime games, MMO nickel-and-dime games, or games that *look* like "normal" games but nickel-and-dime you with 200 DLCs including key content (ME3 or Fable 3, etc). "Gaming" will return to its 1950s roots of compulsive gamblers who can't stop throwing down chips - except when the cherries come up all you get is a lightshow. Some people will be outside that model, but I think that the AAA market is sliding that way, EA was delayed in that plan when it was leaked for Call of Mass Effect. Sorry, I mean Battlecrack Duty. Well, whatever it was. The silver cloud is that since Homey Don't Play That, I should regain some of my spare time. Maybe. Posted by: Jerry at January 16, 2013 05:49 AM (4SKYj) Yeah, well I have groceries in my fridge and gas in my car, so there! Yeah, I would like to have that stuff. I would probably just have the SSD for OS and key apps. I have like 140 games on Steam and others not on Steam. I tend to play a game for a while and then go play another one ADD style, sometimes for weeks but always going back and forth. I would have to move things a lot, which is not very SSD-suitable. Large copies probably not a big percentage of use, but still, they are ultimately disposable (just with a long life). Luxury? I thought so for a long time. The Core i5 desktop I built a few months back is the first machine I've owned with an SSD. All of my experience before was in building machines for other people, such as a couple I put together for Jerry Pournelle last year because ThermalTake sent him a treasure trove of parts, like a mondo deluxe case I would never dream of buying for myself. That case alone has a MSRP over half of my cost for the entire Core i5 machine. There is no going back. Any machine I spec now is going to have an SSD. If I had to choose between having all of the RAM I wanted and an SSD, the SSD would win on the basis that it's very easy to add RAM later but far more work to rework a system to use the SSD. (Unless you use it as a cache but my experience with this to date has not been good.) There wasn't really anything worth looting from that campus. This was for a short-lived TV series called Glory Daze about college life in the 80s. (The one episode I saw was awful.) It was interesting to see the old phone system and the token ring network provided some handy paths for our Cat5e. The PA system appeared to be intact and there was some interesting gear in that office. I have an older Core 2 Duo laptop that shipped with Vista and soon got the Win7 beta and RTM in succession. It's still pretty useful but its drive is getting flaky. At least I suspect that is the reason for some odd pauses recently. If I see a good price on a Seagate Momentus hybrid I'll likely go for that. The best compromise between performance and capacity in an aging laptop. (Newer full-size laptops will have an mSATA slot for a business card sized SSD and a regular 2.5" bay, so you can have it all.) Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 06:05 AM (kcfmt) 610
Oh and Samsung, why you no release 8 gig sticks of ram? I luv your 4 gigs but damn, I need more than 16 gigs.

It's pretty easy to set up a system with a small-ish SSD and have Steam and its content live entirely on a spinning platter drive. If space is severely constrained on the SSD you can also set up your Libraries (Documents, Photos, Videos, etc.) to live on the regular drive so the SSD is just for the OS and major apps. Eventually the size and price of SSDs will improve to make it a non-issue but I'm keeping a close eye on the 120 GB SSD in my system to see how the consumption advances. All of the libraries and the Downloads directory live on the 1 TB regular drive. So far, Win8, Office 2013 Pro Plus full install, various other apps like Firefox and Chrome. plus a crap ton of WinStore apps are eating up about 67 GB on the SSD. I think the big threshold for a lot of people will be a 200 GB SSD for around $100. This is enough space for most people to not need to worry about running out unless they like to keep a lot of multi-DVD games immediately available. I really need a lighter case than my HAF912, but with good cooling.
I move it sometimes, and I'm not supposed to be carrying heavy stuff around, and it's a freaking monster. The stupid thing is I bought it after I got sick, I was actually shopping for a more portable case but it was one sale so I bought it. Good case, just heavy. Good airflow but need more sturdy PSUs with front-to-back airflow, I have to prop the case up on wood because it's a bottom-feed PSU mounted on the bottom of the case. Was thinking of building a custom case and stealing drive bays and MB tray from something else. A sort of "wind tunnel" case of relatively minimal dimensions. I have 4 optical drive bays and one optical drive.

Amazon has it for a couple bucks less but still far too high to justify for a five year old laptop. I get the feeling Seagate doesn't really care about selling this product. The $50 premium for the 8 GB of SLC cache over the non-hybrid version is pretty steep. Laptop OEMs have largely ignored it, even as an custom option. If it's just a matter of keeping the old laptop in service I can get a 500 GB that would be a 180 GB upgrade for around $60. I'd LIKE to have the hybrid to indulge my tech geekery but I have to consider where my money is best applied. It won't be long before those newer laptops with mSATA slots start showing up in the lower price ranges. If you go the caching route, you can have a 32 GB card for considerably less than Seagate hybrid premium. Of course, I shouldn't be spending the money at all, what with looming debt and all. But I'm teetering, so off to bed. Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 06:36 AM (kcfmt) 617

571 The Dude,
Well AMD is good for Niche builds at a minimum . The APU is extremely useful for building a streamline small box gaming rig on the cheap. I built my son a dedicated medium power gaming rig using the following. A-10 5800k cost 129 bucks. Corsair H60 60 bucks ASUS f2AV ATX FM2 MB 139 bucks 16gb Corsaird DDR3 2100 ram 89 bucks Intl 210gb SSD with read and write at over 500ms on sale 109 bucks AMD radeon 6670 with 1gb DDR5 80 bucks 750gb segate momentus XT 750gb hybrid drive 120 bucks I had the Win7 key but could have picked up win 7 for ~90 bucks when I built it Decided to use the Cooler Master HAF912(cost 54 at the time is down to 44 bucks) with a Corsair high performance 600 watt powersupply (currently about 65 bucks) So for under 1000 Bucks I have a system build that gets a 7.3/7.4/7.1/7.1/7.9 on the WEI when Hybrid Crossfire is turned on that is energy efficient as all get out with very overclockable dx11 native graphics. add in a 30 buck XBox360 controller and suddenly those steam games that are too console like for my tastes most times play like a dream. If nothing else it was a fun little science experiment and I may put it into a breadbox build... Posted by: sven10077 at January 16, 2013 07:05 AM (LRFds) 620
Not only did MS ignore lessons of UI implementation they also spent butt loads of cash in developing the win 8 UI.
What you have in Win 8 is an example of what happens when marketing interferes with a products. The attempt was to force a unified UI across platforms to nudge buyers into their mobile platforms. This was not a good move for the desktop. Metro should have been an App in a Win 7 UI that could be called. As it stands I avoid 88% of that crap UI.
