House Passes $50 Billion In Sandy Relief (Mostly Unrelated Pork) With Democrats Providing Majority Of The Yes Votes
UPDATE: Less Than Half The Money Is Sandy Related

I'm sympathetic to the idea that controlling the House means you can't make big positive changes in thinks like entitlements but you can at least stop bad things from happening.

Of course you have to want to do that and John Boehner doesn't seem to want to.

The House approved a $50 billion Sandy relief bill Tuesday evening, after several hours of contentious debate in which scores of Republicans tried unsuccessfully to cut the size of the bill and offset a portion of it with spending cuts.

Members approved the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, H.R. 152, in a 241-180 vote. Among Republicans, 179 voted against it, and just 49 voted for it, a protest against a bill that many conservatives say is too big and provides funding for things other than immediate relief for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

...

"According to the Congressional Budget Office, more than 90 percent of this money won't even be spent this year," Rep. Tom McClintock said. "That's not emergency relief."

Just like the fiscal cliff deal, Boehner brought to the floor a bill he knew a majority of the Republicans opposed. I'll cut him some slack on the fiscal cliff deal but to do it over pork spending?

Either Boehner is now the Democrats' leader or Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House. No matter which it is, Boehner and the House GOP is absolutely useless.

GOP delenda est.

Two things:

-Obama's big tax hike? Yeah, that's going to bring in about $60 billion this year, so...gone.

-Here's Gabe's post on the Sandy pork.

Even more outrageous: The total Sandy relief is $59 billion: $9 billion in flood insurance relief already passed and the $50 billion today. But of that $50 billion today only $17 billion is for Sandy related matters.

The base bill, H.R. 152, provides $17 billion for Sandy relief, and the rule makes in order an amendment from Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) providing another $33.7 billion.

So less than half of the $59 in "Sandy relief" ($26 billion) is actually related to Sandy.

Being a fiscal conservative and a Republican is simply no longer possible. Pick one.

He wants the military in half and highly progressive tax rates. Before you guys are done we will have 70% tax rates and America will be a nice controllable nation, because you are in the main, idiots.

There's a story over at Hot Gas that the GOP's brilliant solution to the debt ceiling issue is to give Obama even more than he wants.

Yay!

They want to set a new ceiling that will encompass the rest of his term. Awesome.

So, they'll give him a debt ceiling that's supposed to last 4 years, Obama will spend it in one year.

And we'll be right back where we are only in much worse shape.

208 Inhofe to oppose Hagel nomination for SecDef
By John T. Bennett - Staff writer
Posted : Tuesday Jan 15, 2013 19:59:27 EST
A key Republican senator says he will join several GOP colleagues in opposing the nomination of Chuck Hagel to become defense secretary, a key development in an increasingly politically charged confirmation fight.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, incoming Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member James Inhofe, R-Okla., called Hagel “a good person.” But a one-on-one meeting earlier in the day led Inhofe to conclude the senators are “too philosophically opposed” on major issues for the SASC ranking member to support Hagel’s nomination.

@ 123If the reports are true (I never saw them refuted, maybe I didn't notice) that more Mormons and Catholics voted Obama than Romney, then you can bet the Dems are going to own Congress and the White House. That likely gives them the SC.
-----------------------------------

I don't know about Catholics, but I know the Mormon info is wrong. The troubling point with the Mormons in the last election was that a higher percentage of them voted for McCain than voted for Romney (by a couple of percentage points, iirc). Or in other words, Obama appears to have received a higher percentage of the Mormon vote in 2012 while running against a Mormon candidate than he did in 2008. He still ultimately lost that voting bloc, but still...

256 As far as I can tell, Obama's strategy is to demobilize the GOP base for 2014 by having the Republicans do one thing after another that proves to their base that they are worthless. Debts. spending, gun control, mass immigration - on every issue he "requires" the Republicans to sell out.

John Boehner's strategy is to cooperate.

The strategy of Republicans in Congress is to cooperate, but with a fig leaf. They will vote against horrible bills, when those votes will be ineffective. But they support a Speaker who brings forward bills with Republican super-majority opposition. In other words, they want to lose on substance, but be seen voting the right way. They are sellouts. Also, they are up for a war on Republican voters, making it hard for challenges to corrupt incumbents to succeed.

287 Good grief, the French have more balls than the surrender monkeys in the Republican caucus.

So lets check the state of play. Fiscal cliff was a small loss of yardage. We did get the Bush tax cuts made permanent for most people, with D votes out the wazoo no less. That ain't bad. But it also wasn't too good since everyone KNEW they would vote for that. In the end we didn't really get anything to show for a tax increase. No spending cuts, but don't worry: It was a just tactical retreat; This was the wrong hill to die on, the debt ceiling is a much better place to make a stand on cutting spending since polling shows people actually support matching cuts to raising the debt ceiling.

The most clear cut pork case in years, while we are supposed to be making the point that we are f*cking broke btw, and we just folded. And again got absolutely nothing.

The RINO chorus is already in perfect sync with the White House on the debt ceiling. Holding the country hostage over it is shocking and unprecedented. Uh huh, except for all of the other ones, including Graham/Rudman, etc. So we are going to surrender and retreat from that hill, promising yet again that the NEXT one is the one to die on.

Come the end of the sequester postponement we will of course retreat yet again, because the end of the current CR is right around the corner and this is finally where we have the Dems right where we want em. So lets fall back to that hill, this one just isn't worth dying on.

Then a fast brainstorming session to come up with why it is vital to 'compromise' on another CR instead of an actual budget and we can all have a big ol group hug and get on with important things like rewriting the 2nd Amendment to avoid having the media call us nasty things.

Screw em. I'll watch the voting records and donate to individuals. But I ain't a Republican anymore.

Read the following, which is an analysis of the bill when it came before the Senate. See how much of it doesn't apply to Sandy. What the House did today was pass the non-Sandy stuff, and that was the vast majority of the bill that came from the Senate.

381 And to think I laughed at the people on those prepper shows.
Posted by: Hard Right at January 15, 2013 07:55 PM (uhftQ)

I still laugh at some of them even though I've been stockpiling ammo and food for some time, especially those focused on implausible happenings such as giant volcano eruptions and overnight shifts in the earth's magnetic field. Fat preppers buying tons of food in bulk and surrounded by mountain-high stacks of dried goods, for example, speak more to deeply buried insecurities than to plain old living through hard times.

There's a big difference between them and me, though. Most of those who call themselves preppers are exclusively focused on their own (and their families') survival. I'm more politically oriented, more concerned with the here and now, deeply worried about the survival of the Republic. Seems to me the GOP is approaching a schism in much the same way Republicans like Lincoln broke off from the Whigs when the Whigs refused to address the expansion of slavery in the territories.

The issue now is the runaway expansion of the federal government and the stealth transformation of the United State into yet another failing and increasingly authoritarian socialist superstate.

Either the moderate-leaning Republican establishment wakes up and responds to the threat or we--conservatives and libertarian-types who share love for the Constitution--split off and radicalize. Don't let it be said the American Republic faded away and died without a fight.

Two thirds designated to be spent in 2015 or later.

I don't know about you, but I think "disaster relief," like everything the President says, has an expiration date.

This is why they split everything up into 100 million here and 12 million there, and within those allocations are more divisions. It takes days to puzzle it out.

My advice? Buy and gather things you may need. Network with a small group of like-minded people in your geographical area who share your views and whose faces and names you know. Meet and talk things over on a regular basis. Learn useful skills. Acquire a specialty such as first aid, for example. Just this week, I learned how to produce potassium nitrate crystals and and render fairly pure sulfur from common store-bought items.

423 If you're aiming to make the case that the Sandy relief bills don't go to Sandy relief, you at least have to show how that is.

Your earlier effort at 'itemizing the earmarks' just showed into what federal agencies the money from Sandy relief was intended to go. But it's still Sandy relief: applying funds THRU existing agencies doesn't somehow magically mean they're not aimed at being used in Sandy relief.

This time around you've linked to a couple of pieces NEITHER of which in any way at all detracts from the idea of the funds in the bill going to Sandy relief. The Hill piece itemizes process, but it doesn't demonstrate any diversion of funds at all.

Ace really shouldn't have left you the keys to the liquor cabinet.

More like 250. Mind you the philosophical core has shifted a few times, in the 1800s, the unpleasantness in Russia, China, our "Westernization of Communism" which happened in the 30s-50s and not the 60s like you'd think.

We're literally being spent under and inured to massive entitlements to create a desperate mob when the rug is pulled out. The people talking about 1938 are closer than they may know.

Sitting here in the dark, we just don't know what to do. We can identify the problem, but our allies call it crazy talk and want to fiddle around the edges.

It's not the edges that are rotting, it's the core.

So we rage and we vote and we get depressed, but because we can't even agree on what the problem is in large numbers, we fail to deal with it, and it grows.

463 Why would we retreat to the red states? With the exception of a few states in the north east we can starve the bastards out.

1. Pass an Article 5 call from as many deep red states as possible, strengthen the 10th, weaken the 14th, ditch income tax, and direct election of Senators, rewrite the Commerce clause, and then clearly define life, citizenship, marriage, and death.

2. Shut down the highways and rail lines for health and safety inspections. Cut power and fuel supplies to save our environment. Do the interdiction at a three day walk from the urban FSA.

3. Do not relent, regardless of the starving children images until enough blue states knuckle under and the Article five changes are implemented.

The revolutionary era Tea Party was a precursor, anyway.

I've got an idea: How about calling ourselves the 'Democrat Party'? We could refer to ourselves publicly as 'New Democrats' to differentiate ourselves from the commie scumbags who have taken over leadership of the Democratic Party. With a name like Democrat Party, we could put candidates on the ballot and steal votes from the Democratic Party.

everyone thinks they're a "fiscal conservative," the term is meaningless. the difference is Dems want tax hikes and the R's want cuts in domestic spending (entitlement reform mostly, since that's the main driver, not pork)

also i know it irks some people but not everyone defines their conservatism exclusively through deficit-counting
