Obama to Announce Executive-Order Gun Control Measures Tomorrow

Mostly stuff he has the power to order unilaterally -- mostly.

Actions the president could take on his own are likely to include imposing new limits on guns imported from overseas, compelling federal agencies to improve sharing of mental health records and directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence, according to those briefed on the effort.

Unfortunately there is precedent, thanks to Bush 41, for that first measure (unilaterally imposing new limits on gun imports).

Meanwhile, two boys were suspended for playing cops 'n robbers at recess -- finger-guns, you know. They're banned.

And Rand Paul says we don't have a king -- or rather we shouldn't have one.

I read an article on manufacturing robotics the other day (forgot where, or I'd post the link).

The gist of the article was that robotics will allow us to compete with pretty much any country as far as "production" goes.

The downside is that robotics won't create new jobs, to speak of, because of robots replacing people.

The upside is that we could buy a U.S. made knockoff of a Chinese knockoff at a lower price, better quality control.

There's a thread in the LEO section at AR15.com that talks about this. Some cop starts a post asking why civvies are getting their panties in a knot because they're having trouble getting all sorts of exotic gear. This is in the LEO section. The other cops come in and give him a right, proper lesson in how wrong he is.
I get the feeling that the older, old-school cops are more knoweldgeable about the 2nd Amd than the younger, greener cops. The older ones are absolutely fine with law abiding civvies having whatever they want, while the younger ones want to play Sheriff Buford T Justice.

So what you're saying is that children standing behind the President of the United States, easily one of the biggest targets for foreign or domestic assassins in the entire world, are safe than their compatriots in a school building because the President is protected by men and women who carry guns, and the children in the school are not.

Gotcha.

The accuracy can be nearly as good on a proper set-up (good shottie, good slugs), but the drop is precipitous.

That's an ounce of lead. It falls feet. With a 100 yard zero, most slugs will fall off 18 inches by 200 yards.

Obama hasn't proposed any anti-gun legislation in his first term,
and has rarely mentioned the topic. This makes us wonder how long the
NRA and the politicians who do its bidding can continue to pretend
there's a wolf at the door before people look outside and discover that
wolves are an endangered species. The answer, based on last week's
annual NRA convention, is apparently forever. Presumptive GOP
presidential nominee Mitt Romney, the event's headliner, slammed Obama
for "employing every imaginable ruse and ploy" to restrict gun rights
(apparently, his ruses are so subtle as to be invisible to the naked
eye) and warned that if the president wins a second term, he will
finally launch the NRA's long-hyped attack on guns

Any federal agency that has mental health records likely isn't a covered entity anyway. (Take the CDC, it's not a covered entity that I know of.) Those that are (like the VA) will likely find some way around this (likely leveraging treatment clauses in HIPPA.)

as all the "assault guns" are? I'm looking for one in Beretta 92 config.
and haven't started poking around yet, so wondering if I should just
order rather than hunt around.

From what I've been seeing, pretty much any semi-auto centerfire weapon capable of using "high capacity" magazines has been flying off the shelves. I'd imagine that the Sub 2000 is no different.

Feel free to call around, but don't be terribly offended if they just laugh. Expect a wait if you order.

179 70Anybody ever shoot a sabot slug out of your smooth bore shotgun?

More or less accurate than a regular rifle slug out of a smooth bore? Posted by: polynikes at January 15, 2013 01:49 PM (m2CN7)My cousin bought a Remington in 20 ga and told me it was rifled slug barrel and asked me to sight it in for him. Sabots landed all over the place. Upon inspection of the target i noticed a side hit. With the slide open (!) i felt the inside of the bore and determined it was in fact smooth. His dad did not believe me so then broke the barrel down so he could look inside. Smooth as my head! Sabots are not grooved so there is no spin on the projectile, it is not aerodynamically stable. Shoot round ball or rifled slug only.

The Supreme Court, in 1952 during the case of Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. vs Sawyer ruled that President Harry Truman’s Executive Order 10340 which put all steel mills in the country under federal government was invalid and unconstitutional. The Supreme Court called this executive order invalid because it attempted to make law, which was the job given by the constitution to the legislative branch (Senate and House of Representatives). Since then executive orders pertaining to laws were only allowed to be carried out when they are used to clarify or act to further a law put forth by Congress or the Constitution.

Presidents have been accused a number of times of abusing executive orders. The most common abuse is when the president uses them to make or change laws without the approval of Congress."

258 Obama winning on the importation end isn't TOO bad as long as there are
US companies like Colt, Springfield Armory, etc. in business.

Springfield armory pistols are manufactured in Croatia. Or at least mine was before I lost it in a freak flood.

259 The government won't come for shotguns until they see pictures of "assault shotguns".

Gray-black
colors, composite pistol grips, laser sight, led spot light, high
capacity magazine... all the scary shit that they can't stand in rifles.

I saw the future of the Army electronic techs at Meade. Being taught by computer. Which I guess is an improvement over what I saw when using the GSQ-120; all the dials had color zones, if a reading was outside the color zone then the Army technician knew something was wrong.

SA's 1911s are all made in Brazil by Imbel, with varying levels of assembly and finish work here in the US, depending on how high up the scale you go.

Problem is. 100% of those volunteered to join organizations that are used to following orders. Their hearts might not be in it but... most of them will go along.

Which means this EO will be parsed to fuck to determine what an "imported firearm" is.

A ban on existing firearms being re-imported from another country, such as the infamous M1 Garands from South Korea, would be in line with the current administration's policies.

A ban on newly manufactured weapons belonging to a US corporation being brought in from overseas would be a de-facto ban and could easily be challenged as infringing the 2nd Amendment.

> 204 I don't actually see where its constitutional to forbid us fully automatic weapons. Or even field artillery if we want it.
Posted by: maddogg

It's not. we go along with it since most people can't afford heavy weapons so why fuss about it.

Posted by: Comrade Arthur at January 15, 2013 02:50 PM (qkP36)

269 266 Comrade Arthur,

I respectfully would posit that a higher portion of the SOCOM guys I've met would be the ones who would leave at once than the average line dawg.

I am also not in the habit of blowing sunshine about the numbers.

We will get 15-20 possibly 25% of the force that leaves at once.

About a third of those left will be reachable.

Texans will largely leave in big numbers, I know that while I was in I would have left with the Texans if it ever came to that.

We were surveyed twice on whether or not we would disarm US citizens.

I answered "no."

270 Can we stop with the implication that if "Bush did it, it's Constitutional" crap?

You've made that thought into some type of declaritive retort such as "oh well, it's legal, so what can you do".

Well, since the time of Plato nobody's challenged that Executive behavior. Are you crazy?

You know. HE did it, so it must be legal and Constitutional.

It's the surrender monkey song.

EO's have been the subject of discussion and consternation since the beginning. They've never been challenged in a meaningful way.

That being said, I would sue Obama's ass over what's being considered. And win. In fact, I wanted someone to sue Bush.

I've been researching a post on this, and it *appears* that there's an exception for law enforcement applications. Still working on it, though.

274 272 Comrade Arthur,

It was asked by the Bush the elder DoD.

I do not think it had been asked prior if memory serves, DoD was so impressed by the number they were silent.

It was ~27% at the time.
