New Year's Resolutions for Believers in Freedom

Patterico is fed up like most here. But rather than just angrily ranting he has some specific actions that everyone can do.

We have tried going the traditional route: voting for "conservatives" like Mitt Romney, or ensconcing "conservatives" in the Supreme Court like John Roberts. Obviously, this path is not working. Most of us feel frustrated. The politicians in D.C. - and, let's face it, the general public - don't see the crushing debt as the problem we do. They don't see the abandonment of the free market as the problem we do. They don't see crushing regulation, increased taxes, and overweening socialism as the problem we do.

We want to do something. But what?

This is the time of year when people set New Year's Resolutions. I suggest that, this year, you set your New Year's Resolutions according to principles of conservatism - or, if you prefer (as I do), according to principles of freedom.

Take actions in your everyday life that will promote freedom in this country, in small ways. What am I talking about? Here are some ideas:

None of these actions cost much money or take that much time so you'll have to work hard to find excuses.

The Weird Phenomenon of Ottoman Empire Nostalgia on the Left

If you wait long enough everything has a comeback - even the Turkish empire:

If you hate America and the West generally, but aren't crazy enough to long for Nazism or Communism, what's left? Remarkably, many leftists have recently been expressing affection for the Ottoman Empire. Seriously.

It was good for the Ottomans, sometimes decent for the Arabs but bad if you were Christian or an ethnic minority. The Armenians had the misfortune of being both:

The first step in this direction was taken in early 1915 when Armenian soldiers in the Ottoman army were relegated to "labor battalions" and stripped of their weapons. Most of these fighters-turned-laborers would be marched out in droves to secluded places and shot in cold blood, often after being forced to dig their own graves. Those fortunate enough to escape summary execution were employed as laborers in the most inhumane conditions.

At the same time, the authorities initiated a ruthless campaign to disarm the entire Armenian population of personal weapons before embarking on a genocidal spree of mass deportations and massacres. By the autumn of 1915, Cilicia had been ethnically cleansed and the authorities turned their sights on the foremost Armenian settlement area in eastern Anatolia. First to be cleansed was the zone bordering Van, extending from the Black Sea to the Iranian frontier and immediately threatened by Russian advance; only there did outright massacres often substitute for otherwise slow deaths along the deportation routes or in the concentration camps of the Syrian desert. In other districts of Ottoman Armenia, depopulated between July and September, the Turks attempted to preserve a semblance of a deportation policy though most deportees were summarily executed after hitting the road. In the coastal towns of Trebizond, for example, Armenians were sent out to sea, ostensibly for deportation, only to be thrown overboard shortly afterward. Of the deportees from Erzerum, Erzindjan, and Baibourt, only a handful survived the initial stages of the journey. .

The Turkish ethnic cleansing of the Armenians was so effective that it later inspired a young, ambitious Austrian corporal in the German army.

Good News: The TSA is Now Protecting Football Games

Because they can. And if you ask why, the terrorists will have won.

"Travel writer Christopher Elliott touches down with the news that the U.S. Transportation Security Administration was spotted standing around outside a recent American football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers (picture). According to Mr. Elliott, the 'TSA goes to NFL games and political conventions and all kinds of places that have little or nothing to do with ... travel. It even has a special division called VIPR - an unfortunate acronym for Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response team - that conducts these searches.' He continues, 'As far as I can tell, TSA is just asking questions at this point. "Data and results collected through the Highway BASE program will inform TSA's policy and program initiatives and allow TSA to provide focused resources and tools to enhance the overall security posture within the surface transportation community," it says in the filing. But they wouldn't be wasting our money asking such questions unless they planned to aggressively expand VIPR at some point in the near future. And that means TSA agents at NFL games, in subways and at the port won't be the exception anymore - they will be the rule.'"

The fact that they have the the money and people to do this is a sure sign their budget is way too large.

The Mass Theater Shooting That Didn't Happen

On Sunday December 17, 2012, 2 days after the CT shooting, a man went to a restaurant in San Antonio to kill his X-girlfriend. After he shot her, most of the people in the restaurant fled next door to a theater. The gunman followed them and entered the theater so he could shoot more people. He started shooting and people in the theater started running and screaming. It's like the Aurora, CO theater story plus a restaurant!

Now aren't you wondering why this isn't a lead story in the national media along with the school shooting?

Two thoughts come to mind:

1. What stopped the shooter? Answer: What stops most mass shooters.

2. Why haven't you heard about this incident?

Also The Parable of the Broken Window and Gun Control

If you've never read the full text of Bastiat's Parable of the Broken Window, you should. It's short and still quite relevant 150+ years later.

You can play the same myopia game with all the other Progressive positions too, whether welfare or national security.  Invariably, if you drill down into the Progressive world view, and you put aside the usual paranoid delusions that thrive in the absence of clear-eyed evidence, you will see that each Progressive political "theory is confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not seen."

Progressivism is like mental and moral myopia.  It's acolytes can see only the most simple images, provided they are pushed right under their noses.

1 Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s Assault on Civil Liberties

Progressive crypto-extremist Cory Booker has been trying to present himself as a thoughtful moderate who supports the common-sense “consensus” on issues. Unfortunately for him, he was not so careful in the past. He is on record as wanting to ban guns. Not just scary looking “assault weapons,” but ALL handguns. He states quite bluntly that if he could ban guns, he would. Sadly, he is only one Supreme Court nominee away from being able to do so. Of course Mr. Booker also believes that there are too many people in jail, as revealed in the full video at the 16 minute mark. Hmmm, what happens when you empty the jails and the citizens are disarmed?

Brown served previously at Gov. from '75 to '83. California ought to have know better in '10 when he got the third term that Reagan denied his daddy.

While there was always the excuse that most voters weren't voting in '82 (he ran for Senate to replace Republican Senator Hayakawa, against Pete Wilson and lost), there is no excuse now.

Rumor is, that Brown will appoint Newsome to Diane Feinstein's Senate seat when she resigns/retires in order to prevent an open election with no incumbant.

California wasn't the hill to die on, so the Republicans ran away.

Same thing happened with the NRA in the 90s. They backed out on the 94 AWB in CA because we were "a better example than investment," I was told *to my face* by a major NRA official (ILA head) in 2000.

I still support both nationally, because they're better than nothing, but not by much in this state.

67 Brown is enjoying popularity because the budget is "balanced" based on revenue projections. His party of course wants him now to re-institute all programs cut. If he DOESN'T do that, he will stay popular and will probably get re-elected. That's also counting on revenue coming in at the projected rate, something that hasn't happened in half a decade. With higher taxes and more restrictions on business, and now 144,000 taxpayers carrying 50% of the burden, he's got to cross his fingers nothing unravels. The Ds also want to undo Prop 13. He holds his party back, he's likely to have a good year. But the state is still teetering. Look at San Bernardino, Vallejo, Costa Mesa, and a half-dozen other cities. He has to say no to his party in a big, big way. He may be so old he no longer cares, and will, but its Jerry Brown, so who knows.

88 Those James Blish Star Trek books weren't novels. They were short-story retellings of the original series episodes, I think eight to a book. Which gave him about 12 pages to recap 54 minutes of action and dialog. Along the way, he managed to paper over some plot holes in the stupider episodes, restore some important info that NBC censors chopped out of the scripts, and give Sulu a first name, which he never had on the air.

When they finally ran out of episodes, they started commissioning original novels. Now I think there are almost 300 titles. 98 percent are crap.

Most amazing tidbit: You used to get 54 minutes of program plus a minute of credits in a network hour of TV. Now I think it's about twelve minutes.

96 I owned most if not all of those Star Trek books, and they weren't novels. They were adaptations of the episodes in short story form by James Blish.

Blish did write one original ST novel, "Spock Must Die!" I think I had that one, too, but I don't remember the plot.

Blish was a pretty good writer, died too young.

It was never a question of being "anti-science," it was always not accepting the go-to lab-coats of the far left as infallible.

A little time spent studying science fraud teaches you (if you already didn't know) that they're not a separate breed of people above everyone else - they're the same flawed humans as anyone else.

Good thing Blish had memorized every episode writing the shorts; made it easy to stitch a novel together from oh-so-familiar plot devices.

The first four episodes were very uneven, but it got *much* better when they realized that they were really a sci-fi comedy as much as a sci-fi drama.

True, anecdotal evidence. Hiatts Gun Shop. The "training, reloading, fix-it, be-all, end-all" in Charlotte, this past Saturday afternoon, had a cop at the door, and a waiting-line to get in because of the "fire capacity". 2 out, 2 in.

Zero AR's. 1 Kalishnikov for $775. Kimber's are in stock. But you can either afford the gun or the ammo. Used Remington 1911's for $500. Ammo up 25% +/- except for .22. People buying shotguns "left and right". So, yeah. Maybe it's an "artificial market", but it is for fucking real, either way.

First of all, don't listen to Internet Gun Guy or Gun Counter Guy.

Second of all, training. Learning how and then handling the guns is the only way to know. I've found that most adults who can't rack the slide of a 9mm Glock are simply doing it wrong.

Third, don't even thing of a tiny gun because she's small. The smaller the gun, the heavier the recoil for the same caliber, all else being equal.

I don't personally like the 38, but it's better than nothing.

The only way to get it right is real training and then handling a variety of guns.

Lou's a girl:

I ran onto this conspiracy theory purely by chance. But in the latest movie, in the previews for Batman, there is a huge neon sign on top of a skyscraper that says "Aurora". And then when you look at where one of the areas that Bane is going to attack, Commissioner Gordon points right at Sandy Hook. It's pretty illegible on the movie, but there was this big tube of marketing material meant to push the movie with the media, and on it is the map of Gotham and the name Sandy Hook is huge.

Plus, they changed the name of the area from South Hinckley in Batman Beginsto Sandy Hook now.

Very very very weird stuff. I've always read Batman and this area was never referred to as South Hinckley or Sandy Hook.

Perhaps nothing, but I found it very odd. And I only saw this because I was reading how they were shutting down/locking down certain schools in Virginia because they were named the Narrows, another locale in the Batman movie.

Wacky stuff.

I always have at least 2 mouse traps baited and ready where the litter shitters congregate.

I have not found out where they come in the house.

when I start to get snaps in the regular spot, I'll put traps in the kitchen on news papers.

that way you can bundle them up and toss them and they won't bleed out on the floor either

Posted by: Jake in ID at January 14, 2013 11:44 PM (jfSqj)

If you are using the traditional snap traps, one of the best baits going is a raisin. Wedge it tightly into the trap's trigger, and the mouse cannot lick it out, or tug it out without setting off the trap. And it has to tug hard enough to spring the trap, so likely it will be fully under the snapping lever of Doom when the time comes, hence instant death.
And the raisins can take a beating. I've gotten three mice in succession off a single raisin.
I hates meeses to pieces. But I want a clean kill.

345 Ruger's .357 revolver is a sweet little gun. Load .38s to train with and not abuse wrist. And if we do hit the Wheels Come Off and there is a thug in house, then use the .357 rounds. Once dead then worry about nursing your sore wrist as you call 911.

But first two orders of business. Go to a range that rents weapons to see what fits you and you are comfortable with. Then once you settle on a gun, get more training.

Hold the gun normally pointed in a safe direction, keeping your finger off the trigger. Hold the gun firmly.

Cup your off-hand over the back of the slide as if you were pressing all four fingers and your palm together. Squeeze.

Pull back sharply and let the slide slip out of your hand when the resistance suddenly increases dramatically (i.e. when the slide is fully back). Use your strong hand to push the gun forward at the same time.

Either apply the safety or fire as circumstances permit.

This is generally the easiest method.

You can manually cock the hammer on a 1911 (and some other guns) to reduce the effort required. This works more or less with other exposed-hammer guns but obviously not Glocks or similar designs with no exposed hammer.

Depends. I have trained Mrs. Squirrel on the Buckmaster .22 LR. I figure 10 shots to the face or torso at 5-10 feet should be adequate to stop the threat. Mrs. Squirrel complained of the large frame of the various pistolas as well as the kick. I settled for the .22 because of accuracy and volume of rapid fire. FWIW.

Posted by: Secret Squirrel's Ballz Und Sheft at January 15, 2013 12:03 AM (0SmH0)

360 No matter how good (or even romantic) your intentions are, "What gun for wife" will always get you branded, cursed, or at least eye-rolled. Once you ask that, you Da Man, and a standing target at that. And even if you end up with a really decent gun for your wife (Dude! Nice trade!), as she meets more people in shooting, sooner or later it will come out that she got that one with no personal input, and you'll be the goat.

The only right answer to a question that should never be asked, is just how Merovign always answers it. You take her shooting, you take her to classes, you take her to a range where different pieces are available, and then you let her make the choice. Assume nothing.

Now that I've said that to get the fuckin orphean banshees off, if she has never shot a pistol at all and you don't already have a .22 revolver with a 4 to 6 inch barrel, you need one. Not to be her carry gun, just to play around with. Learn cheap, and if it gets boring, you can always sell it because there is always someone else who needs to practice and learn cheap. I've never lost money on one.

367 I knew a 87-lb woman who was all of 4'10" tall, her carry *choice* was a .357 snubbie. *I* don't even like the recoil form that thing, but she could also shoot a .375 Holland and Holland like nobody's business. It's technique, not body mass. There really isn't *that* much energy there. Balance.

I also knew one who picked an EAA Witness Competition Comp 45 (she had long fingers). Let them learn, let them pick.

The *one* chauvinistic pushy insistence I will make teaching or helping women shoot, is that most beginners (especially women) will lean back as if they are trying to get away from the gun.

That is one habit that *must* be broken.

"Lean forward" may be a stupid political slogan, but very rarely is it the wrong choice when shooting.

407 My only experience with small calibers as .38 and (to a lesser extent) .357 is that you have to be too fucking close to the target to get the desired results. And by close I mean about 6 yards. That is too fucking close. Something gets that close to me, I want it dead about a half an hour ago.

Posted by: Ronster at January 15, 2013 12:31 AM (JgkPs)

The .357 is a "lengthened and strengthened" .38 Special, which is not .38" in diameter, by the way. This is a problem with a lot of *old* calibers where the number doesn't match the actual diameter.

Anyway, since they are the same diameter (.357"), they can fire in the same guns - *but* most .38 Special guns' chambers are too short to fit the .357 (on purpose) so you don't blow your guns up shooting ammunition that's too powerful.

Since the recoil or gas is not used to cycle a revolver, you can use either in a gun capable of handling the higher pressures.

The same goes for the .44 Special and .44 Magnum.

There are a few other rarer calibers you can do this with, but generally it's just those two. .45 Colt and .454 Casull and .327 Federal / .32 Magnum / .32 special come to mind (even more confusingly, they are .312" in diameter).

The fact that many of these calibers are just plain *wrong* in diameter is the subject of much argument.

Few autopistol cartidges are like this, since most of them "headspace" on the case mouth, meaning that you can't use longer or shorter versions in the same gun (safely).

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 15, 2013 12:38 AM (bxiXv)

415 Chthulhu, what will you do with it? Repair or

Posted by: The inexplicable Dr. Julius Strangepork at January 14, 2013 11:47 PM (9HWpc)

Actually, I've got quite a few things in mind.....and probably no more than three quarters of them are severely impractical -- but I won't know which ones until I try them.

For me, the CNC isn't just a feature of the gizmo, it's essentially the entire point. I had been looking into 3D printers -- and started discovering things and thinking more and seeing what sorts of things were starting to catch fire (e.g. http://www.thingiverse.com/). I'd considered things like http://tinyurl.com/7tu4wwr -- and the videos there should show you a bit about how much "programming" is needed to work this. And I'd thought about http://www.shopbottools.com/ as well -- check out the projects at http://tinyurl.com/b249lme.

But there were a couple of areas of concern. First is the entry cost -- the 3D printer was $1400, the click and carve was $1600 and a shopbot desktop starts at $5800 -- the second was the continuing cost -- the 3D printer filament costs over $30 a roll -- and the third was inherent limitations of the device -- shopbots are router-based, what can you use a Porter-Cable router to do? Click and carve has something like a 2" max depth; 3D printers print with ABS and some other filament....but with a mini-mill, I can go anwhere from balsawood to iron (I intend to do a lot of practice runs on stud-grade 2x4s).

In at least the shorter term, I'll be making jigs and improvements in order to do more fun things. Unfortunately, I probably won't be fast enough to cash in on the current craze for 80% AR lowers.

A .38 bullet is the same diameter as a .357. The case is shorter. So you can use it in a .357 but not vice versa.

This gun will fire all those. The diameters are all close enough to being the same but the powder load that gives them velocity/hitting power is the biggest difference. There are bullet weight differences too but that gets into mass at velocity math and I think that's verboten here.

422 Back in the good old days, before Ayn Rand seemed such a prophet, before the present tyranny, things were goooood. We drove our big,, safe SUV's, filled them with cheap gas, paid the extortionate gas tax, and all those gallons of tax filled our Hwy Trust Fund to overflowing. Yes, life was good.

Flash forward to the present day...

Our nice big SUV's are being replaced by little, unsafe carts in an effort to reach that nice new 56 mpg CAFE standard. We must use less "fossil fuel". The earth is in the balance. No drilling. $4 gasoline. So we conserved. The government got what it supposedly wanted.

Curiously, now that our behavior has been sufficiently modified, there seems to be a problem. Now that we are paying twice what a gallon should cost, and putting that gas in cars we don't want, and driving as little as possible to save a buck, The Hwy Trust Fund is running out of money.

Who could have seen that coming?!

Hmmm, either our Dear Leaders saw this coming and this was their plan (smart but evil), or this was a Totally Unforseen Circumstance (stupid but evil).

Low mileage, cheap gas, high tax, many gallons = mucho revenue.
High mileage, expensive gas, high tax, few gallons = poco revenue.

LUCKILY, there seems to be a new solution to this "crisis du jour", and it is a tax-per-mile, to replace/ride along with the existing tax.

.38 special pistols can not use .357 ammo because the overall cartridge length is too long. You can use .38 ammo in a .357 without worrying about excessive pressures because .38 +P loads won't exceed the pressure limits of a .357.

The Colt Survivor and a clone of it (forget the name) (both are very rare) fires .38 Special, .357 Magnum, Russian 9x18mm, .380ACP, 9x19mm (the common one), 9x21mm, 9x23 largo, .38 Super, and 9x23 Winchester... among others!

IIRC the generous barrel means a little less accuracy, and it was never really tested over the long term, but I bet it would sell like hotcakes during the Prepper Boom.

I looked it up, basically the other was the Philips and Rogers Medusa - Colt copied the retaining / extracting mechanism, PandR sued Colt, end result, *nobody* ever sold many of the guns because the company that couldn't keep up stopped the company that could from making them. Wish they had sold out to Colt.

What you want to do is go to a gun range/shop that will let you rent/test drive pistols. You can start with what other people tell you is the caliber of choice. But in the end the best pistol is the one you can fire acurately. You might find a .380 pistol fits you naturally. Actually it does - us.

Roberts pointed that out during is INSANELY stupid decision on Obamacare - he basically picked (or was blackmailed into) a good lesson at the *worst* possible time to deliver that lesson.

The executive is not more powerful than the people, just more (community) organized - we need to re-learn some old lessons or we're going to die out.

557 So Fwench Socialist worker's paradise manager has to figure out why Froggonian Train Pilot did not use sense and stop at an interval that did not turn train into a bomb......

559 It's French subjugation of indigenous peoples--FTW, you dirty colonialist who fails to appreciate the tradition of burning a living widow on the funeral pyre of her deceased husband.

Oui, oui....

so since the Fwench started ritual self-flagellation of western civ 60 years earlier than us by the time I am 90 we will have decent croissants?

Posted by: sven10077 at January 15, 2013 06:27 AM (LRFds)

561 awesome......so the runaway was supposed to be sent to an empty platform, instead of having the runaway explode in a crowded bay causing collateral damage beyond the damage.

There was a closure procedure in place, it locked the tracks into the position they were in....

hell it would have been better to purposefully derail the damn thing outside of the terminal.

You ever have the suspicion we were not really meant for anything more complex than monkeyhshit fights at the zoo and applied banana technology?

Posted by: sven10077 at January 15, 2013 06:32 AM (LRFds)

562 and on a more serious note....

SNCF the French national Rail company escaped all blame the only person blamed was the driver.

You have to love the mystified look on the face of the Fwench Woman who wonders why only the driver was blamed?

Sweetheart Jack Chirac was not going to be paying you guys punitive damages.

That shit is for the evil capitalists.

Have fun at the single payer hospitals where doctors are protected like military hospitals from active duty troops being able to sue.

564 Sven, you're a sharp guy. How's the battle with the ladies going?

Posted by: derit at January 15, 2013 06:45 AM (I88Jc)

565 564 derit,

Dames you can't live with 'em they can't pee standing up.

Nah I love women, wife is a good one.

They are definitely preferable to using a blender for one's carnal needs.

572 571 Little Miss Spellcheck,

When only aliens have tools, only tool will have....

Sven master of the observation so cryptically and inelegantly stated that even "hello" is a malapropism.

Good to see you LMS it's been a bit.

573 I've crossed the line from the place where you can breathe between midterms and finals to the place where every waking minute is an ambush pop quiz waiting to destroy one's lifelong dream.

I've scaled back my internet use accordingly.
