Yep. using ff 8.01
I caught a plug in container. exe process during one of these things and that's a catch all plug in manager for when FF gets hit with a call for something that needs a plug in which it either doesn't have or the plug in has crashed. I ran a scan. No malware and it only happens on Ace so far. My guess? some outside link tries to drop a cookie or a file that it's not supposed because of a call from a normal process of the web page. Ace may not be able to find out who or what. w.streamcloud.com is the place to look. 709 bytes is small and may just be some image viewer or it's trying to show an image but there's no plug in to do so. I'm speculating out my ass here as I'm no guru. YMMV Posted by: Bitter Clinger (aka 3 tooth) at January 14, 2013 08:12 PM (3E2th) 33

It's *probably* a badly-written ad or a java-based ad affected by everyone shutting off java.
Less likely but possible a malware attack, also probably through an add. "Has everyone disabled javascript in the browser? DHS put up a notification about that."
Java, not Javascript. Two very different animals. Am running Flashblock under Firefox. Requires explicit prior user authorization before it allows any Flash or Java applet to launch. Reduces vulnerability to security holes like the ones just found in Java. And also reduces annoyance from autoplay Flash inserts. Not that that ever happens (cough). Blocking Javascript can be prudent too. A different Firefox extension, NoScript, will help you out with that. However, setting that to exclude all unknown Javascript does very shortly become tedious. Javascript is the kudzu of the Internet; it's freaking everywhere, multiple different scripts on every page no matter how basic, and if you have to explicitly authorize every last piece of it... your head asplode. BUT, it's good security practice despite the tedium. Posted by: torquewrench at January 14, 2013 08:25 PM (gqT4g) 120

Until a NAME company with decent tech support supplies a distro that has been THOROUGHLY researched and test run on different machines, you can keep your Linux.
I'm no certainly not a luddite and not without a modicum of computer savvy but linux distros have not been very good to me. it has been over 10 years but the experience left me with such a disdain for open source as far as OS's go. applications; no problem but having the basic core and raison d'etre of the machine be from unknown sources of unknown quality and planning just smacks of "hobbyism" and "elitism". I'll get an Apple before I load another Linux. And don't bother trying to sell me on it. Too many baaaaaadddd experiences. I'd need a psychotherapist to ever put one on a machine. (I may buy a machine that has it preinstalled but I'd always be waiting for the crash. sorta of like pre win xp days.) Posted by: Bitter Clinger (aka 3 tooth) at January 14, 2013 08:58 PM (3E2th) 246

I tried it, it wouldn't load sites, wouldn't let me change things I wanted to change. (more so than even IE) At the time IE was a BETTER EXPERIENCE. Unloaded it and never went back. there's not enough time in a lifetime to sit in front of a machine banging your head on the desk because it wont work or works weird or trashes what your doing and won't admit it's wrong. (IT that is) I blame Object Oriented Programming. Too many can't understand the concept, don't execute it properly and don't manage the development well. Because it takes a higher order of thinking and one has to think in a manner different than the mind's usual perception. Maybe in another generation. Still. It's our design, it doesn't reflect that badly on them as it might seem. Just like these fuel leaks and such for the Dream Jet. Java said they fixed it. Oh, and the DHS is full of shit, so I don't trust them anyways. If Kaspersky doesn't flag it, it didnt happen
Kaspersky did flag it. In a report, Kaspersky Lab, a Russian antivirus company, said that half of all cyberattacks last year were caused by Oracle’s Java software. This is like the fourth. time this vulnerability has appeared and been incorporated into exploit kits. First becuase Oracle refused to fix it. Then when they got pressure to they have assed it and made it worse (J7U9), then they fixed that fix with J7U10 and screwed it up to because they half assed it again and now hopefully it is finally fixed this time. I am on the US CERT mailing list and all the vulnerabilities are reported from third parties to Carnegie Mellon University and the distributed by DHS. DHS is is collating and reporting. Thanks Ace - I just lost a whole rack of vacuum tubes thanks to your little "octet stream".
Posted by: UNIVAC Operator at January 14, 2013 08:51 PM (0pcT0) Well, geeze, Louise. Octet stream have be processed by octal-base tubes. 6SN7's rule, man. You try running them new-fangled 12 AU7's, you/re just asking for trouble. Melt their tiny pins off, most likely. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 14, 2013 10:44 PM (673KB) 295
I was using Chrome at work and it was doing it. I am using Chrome on a laptop and I'm not getting it.

The file itself looks like this:
lt;!DOCTYPE htmlgt; lt;html lang="en"gt; lt;headgt; lt;meta charset="UTF-8" /gt; lt;meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge,chrome=1" /gt; lt;meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, minimum-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=no" /gt; lt;titlegt;SoundCloud Widgetlt;/titlegt; lt;base target="_blank" /gt; lt;link rel="stylesheet" href="/player/assets/widget-20ec3b2e.css" /gt;lt;script src="/player/assets/widget-8f109e00.js"gt;lt;/scriptgt;lt;scriptgt; require(["lib/support", "lib/flash-widget"], function(support, flashWidget) {if (support.newWidget) { require(["application"], function(A) {A.start("07376aef")}) } else { $(flashWidget.start); }});lt;/scriptgt;lt;/headgt; lt;bodygt; lt;div id="widget" style= "height: 100%;"gt;lt;/divgt; lt;/bodygt; lt;/htmlgt; It's trying to embed some sort of widget, but because the MIME type is being parsed as application/octet-stream - the catch-all for raw binary data - the browser doesn't know what it is. Looks like a doofus script kiddy has tried to do something and trod on his dick. Posted by: David Gillies at January 14, 2013 11:20 PM (wscOM) 298

Shows up on main page refresh Win8/Firefox and Linux/Opera. Turning on bug blocking with Ghostery catches and blocks it.

I can see that from China..I am using google Chrome because it screws with the "gummit" sponsored Chinese hacker brigade over here..they are IE based. Its all they understand! Although they do try to slow down chrome , etc., every chance they get!
