| Overnight Open Thread (1-13-2013)Hey it's a fresh new week. So we have that going for us. NRA Ratings by Congressional District For the most part they're about what you'd expect but it is interesting how nearly every Southern states has at least a few districts with NRA F-rated congressmen while the west has most of the full-state A-ratings. Also Piers Morgan Exposes Dana Loesch's Lack of Gun Knowledge by Just Making up Models, Calibers
PJ O'Rourke on the Stingy Worldview of the Left Even happiness is zero-sum: There is a fixed amount of good things. Life is a pizza. If some people have too many slices, other people have to eat the pizza box. You had no answer to Mitt Romney's argument for more pizza parlors baking more pizzas. The solution to our problems, you said, is redistribution of the pizzas we've got-with low-cost, government-subsidized pepperoni somehow materializing as the result of higher taxes on pizza-parlor owners. Royal Navy vs. Japanese Navy Fun Fact of the Day The Japanese navy boasts roughly four times as many major warships as the British Royal Navy. If We Could Preserve Only One Sentence "Richard Feynman was once asked what he would pass on if the whole edifice of modern scientific knowledge had been lost, and all he could give to posterity was a single sentence. What axiom would convey the maximum amount of scientific information in the fewest possible words? His candidate was 'all things are made of atoms.' In a similar spirit, if the whole ramshackle structure of contemporary macroeconomics vanished into thin air and the field had to be reconstructed from scratch, the sentence which packs as much of the discipline into the fewest possible words might be 'governments are not households.' " Tyler Cowan also suggests other forms such as "In the short run, governments are not households." or "Today is a long run from some time back.". Mad Jack: The Only Soldier in WWII To Kill the Enemy With a Bow and Arrow After coming face to face with Lieutenant Colonel John Churchill, the Germans probably had a similar, if less affectionate, moniker for the eccentric officer. The Ins and Outs of Fluid Coupling You'd expect it to be completely boring yet this 1954 Department of Defense film is surprisingly mesmerizing. Court Overturns Rape Conviction Because 1872 Law Says Unmarried Women Can't Get Raped Well at least not rape-raped via impostering: An 18-year-old woman who was raped by her brother's friend, who pretended to be the victim's own boyfriend, has had her rape conviction overturned by a California appeals court because of a 1872 law that says unmarried women are not legally protected from sexual assault by "impostors." So I was reading the Wiki article on Bo Gritz the other day, and I see this gem;
Gritz' huge claimed array of military awards has been drawn into question. A memo regarding his awards and award recommendations during his time in Vietnam seems to indicate that Gritz was personally involved with the recommendation of some of his medals, including the Legion of Merit, and that some of his awards recommendations cited the same missions and incidents, effectively awarding Gritz multiple medals for the same missions, including the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Army Commendation Medal Didn't the left spend 2004 telling us that this never happened, and if you question someone's medals you are an American hating racist? Quick some one look in a 1872 law from congress that makes Obamacare invalid. There has to be some law that no one bothered reside and is fully valid. It would take 50 years to read all the laws that where passed and then changed.
They say 112th was a bad congress because of the lack of laws passed. I would say that is a good thing. The less congress does the better. It is the regulators that one need worry about. one page of law is 80 new regulations. Sure they can't ban guns and bullets but they can ban gun oil and other lubricants under the EPA regulation. They could ban by federal law all outdoor gun ranges under the endangered species act and noise affects some bird. Posted by: Trevor (@tjexcite) at January 13, 2013 10:44 PM (Ea64Y) 119

There's Big Trouble in Little Brattleboro http://tinyurl.com/cqyknmb (news.yahoo.com) Short version: A Federal judge in Brattleboro VT extended the Vermont Yankee plant operation permit by 20 years, to 2032. The permit expires on March 21, 2013. The State opposes, claiming jurisdiction, and is appealing. Vermont Yankee supplies 1/3 of Vermont's power, the remaining energy (about 45% of total) goes to other states. What do the other states say? Will 1/3 of Vermont go dark? Will Brattleboro freeze it's fare share? Will maple syrup run no more? Posted by: Arbalest at January 13, 2013 10:44 PM (KzM0i) 120
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Two women identified as twin sisters were killed Sunday after being hit by a truck on a South Los Angeles street.
Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department says the incident began as a fight between the pair that spilled onto the streets. It occurred about 3 a.m. on Leimert Boulevard just north of 43rd Street. “The altercation they were having ended up out on the street somehow,” Eisenman said. “They were both struck by a vehicle.” Posted by: Islamic Rage Boy at January 13, 2013 10:44 PM (e8kgV) Posted by: chemjeff at January 13, 2013 10:44 PM (BBWjt) 122

It’s extremely intense — you don’t realize you look like a battered burn victim for a week — and then [the dead skin on your face] just kind of falls off … for eight days. “It was horrifying.” “I hope you saved the face afterward,” Conan joked. “That is eBay gold!” Plastic Surgery Before And After has details about Jenn’s nose jobs: “The Break-Up” and “Friends” star reportedly had the Plastic Surgery”. And she not only has one but two Nose Jobs. Rumors claims that she went under the knife 12 years ago and was not satisfied with the results. So she again went for another Rhinoplasty(Nose Jobs). On January 20, 2008, the actress was speckled leaving a plastic surgeon’s clinic but the actress denied the rumors and said that, she has gone to correct the incorrectly repaired deviated septum. After the deviated septum repair, Aniston’s nose tip appears to be much defined and her bridge has become narrower. Now we need Jennifer to own up to her breast implants. Perhaps fear of exposing the procedures she had to augment her breasts help explain why she is reluctant to reveal her boobs in her films. We know that it certainly isn’t modesty! and I nearly hate you for making me google anything related to her Posted by: yankeefifth at January 13, 2013 10:57 PM (Z9EHQ) 191
It's an intersting point to ponder.
The UK is probably coasting along on the last 25-50 years of its inertial dominance in finance. India is subtly becoming a power. Posted by: sven10077 at January 13, 2013 10:47 PM (LRFds) I wouldn't say they have subtly become a power because Obama has gone out of his way to offend them, and when he offends a country, you can bet they are a world power or close to it. Posted by: Trevor (@tjexcite) at January 13, 2013 10:44 PM (Ea64Y) It should have been in the original constitution that each year, congress could pass 1000 pages of legislation......less 2 pages per year elapsed from the founding. It's not like there is anything new about human nature every year, and all the better laws should have been passed already -- so anything beyond the limit is likely dreck, anyway. 201 #145, actually it is Richard Nixon's and Gerald Ford's fault for not getting America on the road to clean, renewable power in the 1970s during the first OPEC crisis. America should never have built nuclear reactors. Nuclear power leads to nuclear weapons, and arms should be for hugging.

Not to pollute the ONT with "evil gun talk" but I did promise I'd post the lowest prices I could find on a budget AR build.
The good news is if the receivers are really available you can still build one under a grand... the bad news is not for long I'd wager. Sven's "cheap" AR build for the new year.... http://www.carricozarmory.com/lowers.htm This site allegedly has stripped lowers in the 119-170 dollar range. If in stock and you want an AR grab one now. The price is about 499 with the wholesalers for one right now and will likely climb there before receding but I suspect AR lowers will never be below 75 bucks again. Simplest way to "have" an AR was to go to DPMS and buy a kit and put it on your all laws complied with lower BUT DPMS is quite literally out of kits. R guns still has them here if interested in alakamagig "boom" I have an AR.... http://www.rguns.net/gunparts/rifle-parts-AR-partskits.shtml Price Range is now 60 bucks for just the lower receiver parts and no stock(if you want to get a special type of stock the way to go... to 590 for a 16" M4 carbine layout with carrying handle add on for the flattop. I am not pushing RGuns either I have done business with them, but in the end they seem the least inclined to start profiting from the panic beyond sanity. So the minimum cost to build an Ar15A4 like I built is 119 590 and what a gunsmith charges to assemble it and break in the bore.... 709 so if you act quick you can beat a lot of the panic still. I prefer building a lower to my PRECISE desires which can cost more and then shopping for the complete upper I prefer. If you are in the mood for that you can use this http://tinyurl.com/3hua6ch and shop for the precise upper build you'd prefer. I went with a 445 dollar 1/9 twist base A3 20" upper on my last rifle. It has gone up from the 385 I paid for it last month and will likely keep climbing in the near term. Stay within your budget, do not fail to follow ALL applicable laws and practice good range safety. Happy shooting. Posted by: sven10077 at January 13, 2013 11:13 PM (LRFds) 282

Speaking of movies. I was flipping throught the channels the other night and caught a re-run of Lifetime's "Liz and Dick". Wow!
You never saw such bad acting as Lindsay's. You people have got to watch that just for fun. Watching it drunk would be best. It was like watching a high school senior in a school play. Haven't the rating of awards shows been dropping?
There was a time when it seemed like they were having an awards show on major networks every other week. People's Choice, actors guild, blah, blah, blah. Then they just started having fewer and there was discussion about the fact that fewer people were watching the major ones. You'd think that the people in the entertainment industry would get the message that many of us have no interest in watching a bunch of preening, self-important, shallow, narcissists. What percentage of tv viewers would be able to name which movie got the academy award for best movie last year? Best actor? The fact is almost no one gives a shit. Oh, and I'm still laughing about "Titanic", with its idiotic script, and the spectacle of the little waif Leonardo banging the buxom Kate, getting best movie. Posted by: nerdygirl at January 13, 2013 11:07 PM (c2kdv) There is a reason why the awards shows are shown in January, it used to be the "dead period" of television. Nowadays the networks "protect" the awards shows by not programming any new shows at the same time because you know that if the NFL scheduled one of the games for tonight, the Golden Globes would have fewer viewers than "Extreme Couponing". 392 carol T,
underemployment by my former professional standards, keeping 5 threads open at once, being able to read red Storm rising in volume in an evening. Mostly from not sleeping. It got pretty bad this year around election time. We found out we are going to be moving this fall so I had to readjust some of my work plans, and reduce my stick time to have more time to get the boy to focus on his education. He is a bright kid in reading comprehension, and anime studies. Sadly like my favorite OW$ punching bag I don't think there is a lot of career opportunity in anime studies. He also wants to learn either carpentry or diesel mechanics. If he is to go to Vocational tech wherever wife is stationed it is vital he be on grade level in math so he can focus on his trade. Thus if I skip a little housework(far too easy), work a few fewer days(which drives me up the wall), and skip the two a days on the treadmill9sadly a necessity the last three months with the cyst I am fighting in my back) I have far too much time to post inanity. They're apolitical and get what little information they have from the nightly news - and like you said, according to the media Obama's doing great - and he really, really cares about the average person! I have reduced my career focus a lot the last decade, and I wonder if me at 25 when I was a contract hazmat guy gone a LOT would believe it, on the other hand I know that I have given my all to trying to guide my son better than I was guided and allowed my wife to focus on her military career without "spouse drama" compared to a lot of her peers. I once worked with a stunningly beautiful Greek girl. She was quite likable and pleasant too, which is not always a given when it comes to stunningly beautiful women. She was from Florida - Naples, if I remember correctly. Her dad was a commercial fisherman. Apparently quite a few Greeks emigrated to Florida and were involved in commerical fishing there.
That was news to me - just as it was news to met a half-Portugese (sp?), half-Irish guy from Worchester MA and find out that that is a fairly common combination in eastern Mass. Of course I knew about the Irish, the Portugese, no. Posted by: Donna V. at January 14, 2013 12:04 AM (BStAJ) 450

Al-NYT is simply rerunning their 1930s playbook. Their ability to do so is arguably my and conservatives like me fault. I was almost done with a history education degree when i looked at the politicization of history by Billy Ayers, looked at the NEA, looked at the kids and decided I'd rather slam hazmat cocktails down my gullet than teach. I surrendered the battlefield when I probably had a duty to go be cannon fodder. I know several right leaning peers who quit.... they ran us off....I have crawled under machine gun fire on an infiltration course, gotten up from being hit by a forklift and finished my shift after a 15 minute nurse break and done a few other brave things.... I am also cowardly enough or weak enough i grasped that Bill Ayers was probably gonna win on setting History narrative and that i was probably heading for an asylum if I had to teach three weeks of "Transgender Acquatic basket Weaving's Impact on the US founding" and two days of the Founding. An exaggeration, but barely. Posted by: sven10077 at January 14, 2013 12:09 AM (LRFds) 457

That's interesting...and I *am* really torn. I am sincere in encouraging EVERYONE to follow the law to the letter and I mean local, and state as well. Arguably from an ethical standpoint I am more serious about following local law than federal. The feds are way too involved. Follow it all but be friendly to your local politicians on the matter because in the end they are the ones who if things go wrong will have some measure of power. Ty Cobb was a huge dick - and he's normally ranked among one of the top 5 players of all time. It would be nice if there was a correlation between talent and decency - but there isn't, not in any field. I used to work with a cardiologist I absolutely hated. Yep the new 2014 Corvette Stingray has been unveiled. And Corvette owners who like to have fun will probably hate them. Why do I say that? They will have to battle the computers in two key areas - fuel and shifting. To boost mileage during highway drives, the motor will switch to a 4 cylinder mode. And the seven speed transmission will try to anticipate your shifts. http://tinyurl.com/agnx7p2 Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at January 13, 2013 11:42 PM I don't care much for the new bodywork, makes it look like a Nissan GTA with a Camaro ass end If they're really upgrading the interior from rental care grade to something fitting for the price range, that would be welcome. I'll wait to see how it tests on Top Gear before speculating any further. Clarkson and Hammond both like the Corvette in spite of it's flimsiness because it's "good cheap fun". If they're trying to compete with the supercars, Clarkson especially will pronounce it to be "pretentious rubbish". 50 grand to over 100 grand leaves a lot of leeway with options. The 50K version would be a lesser engine with the rental car interiors I would imagine, the better quality would be for those laying out the Lamborghini money. By the bye, I've been reading about the HOF shut out this year, and I've been really irritated because people keep pointing out Cobb was a *gasp* racist. The worst thing about Cobb was not that he held racial views that were very common in the early part of the 20th century, it's that he treated lots of people - black and white - like crap. He wasn't just a dick to blacks, or to fellow ballplayers, but to fans and waitresses and clerks - to lots of people. As Florence King pointed out, Cobb was the Southern antithesis to the Good Ole Boy. He was a Mean Ole Boy - and his meanness was Equal Opportunity Meanness.
But, according to sportswriters and commentators now, the reason Cobb was awful is because he wasn't enlightened on racial matters like they are. I am not only po'ed at people who see racism everywhere, I'm annoyed by people who seem to think it is The Only, And The Biggest, Sin anyone can commit. I think they don't want it here. They want Steve Wynn Casino here though. I don't want to buy DVDs because I did that once and it cost around $100f for all previous seasons of Rescue Me. I watched once, I started watching that in 2009, I had years to catch up on. Now all are available on Comcast on demand. From what I have heard, Comcast vs Verizon is comparing six of one and half dozen of the other. Nothing is perfect. Posted by: CarolT at January 14, 2013 12:48 AM (z4WKX) 501

That was news to me - just as it was news to met a half-Portugese (sp?), half-Irish guy from Worchester MA and find out that that is a fairly common combination in eastern Mass. Of course I knew about the Irish, the Portugese, no.
Posted by: Donna V. at January 14, 2013 12:04 AM (BStAJ) Lot's of Portuguese in New England. Fall River is practically Portugal's third largest city. Thing is, they are not descended from the mainland Portuguese, but primarily from the Azores. The Portuguese became the designation sub-human in the 19th and early 20th century to the point that most New Englanders would rather their daughters marry a black man who was a drunkard with gambling problems, than for her to be even looked at by a Portuguese. If you read "Dagon" by Lovecraft, you'll notice that the "woman" who turns out to be a Dagon creature is described as being "Portuguese." found it
Cobb sprang into the stands and went after him. It turned out that Lueker recently lost a hand and several fingers on his other hand in an industrial accident. That was fine by Cobb – it just made the beat down that much easier. Fans screamed to Cobb how could he hit a man without hands. Cobb retorted he didn’t care if the man had no feet – he was going to pay. Posted by: Thunderb at January 14, 2013 12:53 AM (Dnbau) 507

"I am not only po'ed at people who see racism everywhere, I'm annoyed by people who seem to think it is The Only, And The Biggest, Sin anyone can commit."
Yes, judging people by today's standard is foolish. But also, in my experience, people who are aggressively racist, throwing around the n word in a mean manner, are nasty in general. They're not just nasty to blacks. One woman, who would refer to people she worked with as n words, if you were sitting with her in a restaurant, would refer to an overweight stranger at another table as a fat pig. A neighbor of mine who was the same way, called her own mother, who was in her eighties, a bitch. Most people are reasonably decent to others, the ones who aren't, you avoid. I feel that overt racism has little to do with political views. Those liberals who think racism is rampant among conservatives, but that liberals are more tolerant and unbiased, should spend some time around union members when there aren't any minorities around. And they should sit at happy hour with white teachers who have urban students. Accusations of racism have become nothing more than a political tool. Could not believe he was given a car he couldn't drive, but last year he got into big trouble. His dad died a couple of years ago, and he would come up here during breaks in school and get drunk with his "boys". One night at 3am, they decided our neighborhood would make a nice place to have a drag strip. MrsC was not amused and almost made me call the police, but she decided not to. A little while later we noticed some flashing lights, and lo and behold, the cops had busted him. He blew a .18, and got a free night in the Greybar Hotel. Yeah, I don't like steroids one bit, but journalists getting on a moral high horse, that's a bit rich. As for some era when baseball was "pure" - really, when would that be? I love Hank Aaron. If you ever saw the man interviewed, he's the epitome of class. And yet, old Hammerin' Hank has admitted to popping uppers back in the day. "Greenies" were used in the '60's and '70's (I would imagine players used uppers to get through a 162 game season as much as for any edge on the field. From April through September they're spending a lot of time hopping planes and living out of suitcases.) In the '80's, a lot of coke was used. Was baseball purer in the days when spitballs were legal and corked bats were common? I love baseball (it's heresy for a cheesehead but I love it more than any other sport) , but the idea that once upon a time it was pure and baseball players were noble, instead of guys who would take advantage of anything that would give them a competitive edge, is a pretty shaky one. I remember Rollie Fingers passed on an lucrative opportunity to play for Cinni because Schott had a rule that all her players be clean-shaven and Fingers couldn't bear to part with his handlebar mustache. He said he would shave his mustache if Marge Schott shaved her Schnauzer. Of course, Rollie might not have been referring to her dog. Posted by: Donna V. at January 14, 2013 01:35 AM (BStAJ) 559

Well, yeah, that was my point about Ty Cobb - he was
generally mean to EVERYONE, not just black people. When he stole bases, he'd purposely slide in feet first and aim his spikes at the legs of the infielders, trying to draw blood. IMO, a definite HOFer and a great player, but when he died, only 3 baseball people bothered to show up at his funeral. Posted by: Donna V. at January 14, 2013 01:14 AM (BStAJ) At my college's Homecoming this past fall, MrsC and I were walking around with one of my friends who now works at the school. We were talking about all the construction that happened in the last 10 years, especially to the athletic facilities. We then walked by "Ty Cobb Ballpark". I was kind of confused and asked WTF Ty Cobb ever had to do with Hampden-Sydney, the guy laughed and said "nothing", his granddaughter donated the money to build the stadium and that is what she wanted it called. I think Schott's craziness exasperated the other owners that they jumped on the first chance to legally force her to sell.
If Selig wasn't Wilpon's butt-boy, those psycho crooks would be forced to sell too, just like Frank McCourt was with the Dodgers. Posted by: kbdabear at January 14, 2013 01:41 AM (wwsoB) 565

It doesn't cost much to register a domain name and have it hosted somewhere for mail. I have a very rare last name, so it was easy to come up with a domain choice and my main email address is my first name @ my last name dot com. Most people can't get that but the cost for having my stuff that isn't tied to the wire connecting my house is only about a $100 a year. Posted by: epobirs at January 14, 2013 01:49 AM (kcfmt) 570

She was fucking cheap, to put it mildly. When Eric Davis lacerated his liver trying to make a catch in Game 4 of the World Series in 90, she wouldn't pay to fly him home in a private plane. He had to be kept in a stretcher, so he couldn't fly back commercially. I still remember being at a game in 92 when she took that fucking St Bernard out onto the field and it took a dump right on the Riverfront plastic grass. IIRC, didn't she have some of the elephants from the Cincy Zoo in the stadium one Opening Day, and a couple of the elephants took dumps on the plastic grass? Cobb was a SOB - but no dumb jock. He did product endorsements for Coca-Cola back in the early 1900's and ended up owning an awful lot of stock in the company. So he was a very rich man when he died - at a time when baseball players didn't make the fortunes they do today. I would imagine that his grandkids have benefited from the old bastard's financial savvy. Posted by: Donna V. at January 14, 2013 01:52 AM (BStAJ) 572

What you need more than anything right now is to put one foot in front of the other. I know that's easier to say than to do. I had a miserable three-year job search where I sustained myself borrowing and with temp jobs, lived above a garage, and every so often stretched canned food and rice an awful long time. But here I am... wait, bad example. You'll do better than that. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 14, 2013 02:49 AM (bxiXv) 589

Strangely not that bad outside. I wore shorts this afternoon when I took a bunch of recycling over to the local supermarket, then made a Costco run. I do it as much to annoy people as for my own comfort. I still have to keep the vent to my room closed so as to not be roasted by the level the mother and sister keep the heating at. Roberto,
Get fired, don't quit. Even if they fire you for cause, they will have to have their ducks in order to keep you from collecting funemployment. At a fundamental level, the state UE agent will be on the employee's side. So if the company doesn't have documented proof that they gave you an employee manual, that said manual has clear guidelines on how they go about separating poor employees, and then have a steady written set of escalating steps they took to get you back into conformance, then...you win and get to collect UE. Apple reportedly sent word to suppliers in December that it would be reducing parts orders for the recently released iPhone 5 on "weaker-than-expected" demand, with some orders being cut in half from original expectations. I know why. I got an Apple G3 about two years ago and thought it it was great. The thing sucks now. Apps open by themselves. Itunes starts playing spontaneously. I can't browse from locations I could when it was new. Upgrading some apps require 5,000 word agreements that could require my first born child. The speaker phone function died. Why would I want to by a new $200 iphone that's gonna shit the bed as soon as the warranty expires? I definitely want something else but I'm wondering if I'm gonna lose the 1,000+ songs I've got. Apple has really pissed me off with the first product or theirs I bought. Posted by: Ed Anger at January 14, 2013 03:40 AM (tOkJB) 599
So long as you keep a backup on your computer, your song purchases should be available anywhere you have iTunes installed. If any of them are DRM controlled there are numerous tools to break that.

The fluid coupling video is mezmerizing because men today have become so chickified that listening to a real man explain something with confidence and clarity is comforting. Everything is stated as a fact, using plain language, because he knows what he's talking about. That's comforting in a world where everybody who writes or says anything about anything can't write or say it without preemptively arguing against the opposite to counter the jackasses who will tell him he's wrong because they're jerks.

Greetings:
As to your Morgan/Loesch discussion, I find them both in error. The common writing of a caliber designation is incorrect mathematically. A caliber is defined as one-hundredth of an inch. Thus .223 caliber would correctly be .00223 of an inch, a size of which even Senartress Feinstein might approve. The mathematically correct designation should be 22.3 caliber, or on Mr. Morgan's planet, 23.3. Posted by: 11B40 at January 14, 2013 12:20 PM (lARm+) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0871 seconds. |
