| NFC PlayoffsWell that was a (still going on) game in Denver. Now it's time for Green Bay at SF. When I was a little girl both of these teams crushed my dreams, so the hell with em. However...![]() Comments1
Green Bay intercepts the football and scores right off the bat. This is good.

PecanSc - are you central or eastern WA state? Local Fox affiliate and Direct TV had a BIG temper-tantrum in central WA from Aug-Oct last year. I was okay, but my dad was highly pissed about not being able to watch the Seahawks. I hooked up a powered antennae to one of his tv's and set it up to get over-the-air local HD. Worked like a charm and I'm pretty damn sure it solidified my place in the will. And now he has options even if Direct TV goes down for any other reason.

So no gaming thread?! Fine, I'm going OT after just 23 comments...cuz that's how I roll, bitches.
The Kerbal Space Program has got to be one of the best computer games I've ever come across. As a professional Spacecraft Orbital Analyst, and accredited Coffee Go Getterer, I can attest that the the maths, and physics of this 'game' are pretty good...pretty damn close to spot on! It's more of a complex simulation, than a game. In the demo version, you can build your rocket, attempt to launch your rocket, (RIP Bill, Jebediah, and Bob Kermal), though, if things go right, you can guide your awesome vessel into a stable orbit around Kerbin, and while your Kerbonauts are popping the celebratory champagne, you can inform them that you didn't quite get around to budgeting for the fuel required to get them back down again. Don't worry though...you'll get used to seeing the Kermal triplets killed in a variety of ways...most of which include fire, explosions, crashes, or various combinations of the three. From there, you improve your rocket, attempt to get your Kerbonauts into orbit, and safely back down again....or....that funny round gray ball in the distance? What the hell is that?...maybe you can try flying to that, orbiting it, even landing on it. (Again....RIP Bill, Jebediah, and Bob Kermal). That gray ball is the Mun, and in the demo version, the only other body you can actually land on. (the retail version includes another moon you can play with, and an entire solar system of planets and moons to explore.....I've manage to land on one other planet, Duna, and accidentally did'nt budget the DV to get my brave Kerbonauts back home again. Oops)). Link to the homepage (tiny url preview): http://preview.tinyurl.com/cxmf723 Youtube video of a guy intercepting, and landing on Minmus, (Kerbin's second moon...which I've landed on!). http://tinyurl.com/c6xuabe Seriously...this is a fun game. If you're looking for something that blends game like elements, with believable physics, and real world simulation, this is it. Lot's of player mods, and addons, (ship parts, and pieces that don't require a DLL to work are usually compatible with the demo version). Space planes, space stations, persistence from session to session, (so that you can build some phenomenally complex goodies), a very active, and helpful player community, forums, and continuing active development make this very fun, and interesting. I thought it was extremely interesting that when dear ole Elway intro'd Peyton at the initial press conference with 'we want him to continue to be one of the top QB's in the league' or some such thing, he never mentioned anything about him wanting Peyton to be considered the greatest QB in Bronco history. And at the end of the day, I think John is all about his own legacy.

pet peeve about 1970s and 80s NFL: sports writers conflated the Coryale offense and the Walsh offense, calling both the "west coast" offense. Only the Walsh offense deserved the name, and it was developed in the Ohio River valley.
The offensive concepts most teams use from the Walsh offense should be called "Ohio River" and not "West Coast". Their mistake persists to this day. Posted by: Truman North at January 12, 2013 10:07 PM (I2LwF) 307

Posted by: steevy at January 12, 2013 10:04 PM (9XBK2) I knew that! I like to follow the evolution of offensive football. There is still a little bit of single wing being played today in major football. For instance, Ohio State ran about 5% of heir offense from a three-TE shotgun set that played like the single wing. It would work in the pros in small doses, considering the size and athleticism of modern TEs and QBs. Posted by: Truman North at January 12, 2013 10:11 PM (I2LwF) 314

You're seeing it in Baltimore and the NY Giants. They don't call it this, but it should be called the East Coast offense. Punishing running game, setting up play-action. The future of offense is the Redskins and Bills. They both integrate the pistol to good effect. And the future of quarterbacks is Colin Kaepernick and, believe it or not, Tim Tebow. You're going to see a lot of guys who would otherwise play power pitcher, power forward, or defensive end lining up four yards behind center. I do too. I think that the statists in this country have greatly underestimated the American spirit. It just looks so bad sometimes that it is hard to remember that. I console myself with the thought that the devil always overplays his hand. The dictators in the ash heap of history prove that. Posted by: Cheri at January 12, 2013 10:20 PM (EAgmr) 332

GMs, the owners, and the league all want to promote stars a QB, and in such a brutal game, you have to put a skirt on them and open up the passing game.
But that means there's room to make the meta-game choice to put a running quarterback in and give the defense another element to worry about. Posted by: Truman North at January 12, 2013 10:22 PM (I2LwF) 336

smartfootball.com now. I just checked for it. Thanks for the tip.
I've been reading Grantland and DeadSpin. The have some junk, but ocassionally they'll put together something devastating. I think it's Grantland that's been doing a great job on the New Orleans Saints suspensions and the role of the commissioner. Also done a good job on the NHL lockout. Cheri, please punch your nose pickin co-worker in the face for me.
Posted by: Guy MohawkGuy Mohawk: this guy is coming back to a world of shit on Monday. Seriously, he was bragging about how he got tickets for the game from a friend of a friend of the Broncos and Blah, blah for weeks now.But he was stupid enough to also tell us that every game he has attended the Broncos lost. We are holding him accountable and I know that he is dreading coming back to town. Don't worry, he won't hear the end of this for a LONG time. "Man what a shitty stadium. The shadows from the lights make Candlestick look like a little league ballpark."
Yeah, they are moving to Santa Clara soon. This might be the last season at the 'Stick. Posted by: navybrat at January 12, 2013 10:27 PM (5NO2z) 340

Still have some friends family in the SF area. Rumor is that they're all watching the game, too.

I have been to many games at the 'Stick. It is a frozen outpost surrounded by a very hostile area (the Bayview). Worst thing is to have your car break down going home from the game. I have been known to drive 15 miles south and get on a shuttle to avoid this outcome.
I was there for the '89 Loma Prieta 'quake. Posted by: navybrat at January 12, 2013 10:34 PM (5NO2z) 344

Beef,terrible?That's un possible!
Posted by: steevyPossible. I made a beef roast for Christmas Eve dinner and really screwed it up. Tough as nails. Even the scraps we gave the dog he had a hard time chewing it. I guess that I was supposed to brown the roast first in a skillet on both sides before roasting it... Anyway, the wine was good. Posted by: Cheri at January 12, 2013 10:37 PM (EAgmr) 349

You know, I hate to be a sissy just because my team is losing, but I'm going to see what movies are on. My football picks are all crap, as usual, that I can take, but that plus TFG returning for 4 more... I want to bury my head in the sand.

Baltimore over Denver; both Dem states.
San Francisco over Green Bay; bluer state wins. Seahawks to win over Falcons. Patriots to win over Texans. So: Maryland vs New England. Washington State vs California. AFC & NFC finalists. Each a blue state that voted Obama. Posted by: Rex the Wonder God at January 12, 2013 11:29 PM (21TJo) 368

Clay Matthews didnt know whether to shit or go blind trying to defend the Niners read-option plays today and I thinka paradigm shift is taking place. If you have a QB like Kaepernick or Griffin or Newton who have to be defended as passers and runners on more or less every single play, but who are bigger and smarter than a Michael Vick and they dont execute dogs or get drunkand shoot up astrip club every weekend, that guy is going to be VERY hard to stop andjust mightredefine the QB position before he/they are done. Posted by: MikeD at January 13, 2013 12:21 AM (p8QOg) 372
@Aaron_Nagler In the Packers last 3 postseason losses, they allowed 51, 37 45 points. THAT, more than just tonight, is an indictment of Capers.
Posted by: 80sBaby at January 13, 2013 12:50 AM (YjDyJ) 373
For Ted Thompson, this season's primary lesson should be that you cannot and must not rely on one player to win every game. Rodgers put-up impressive numbers despite the many injuries and inconsistent performances (at best) by both the offensive line and the defense. But he could only carry the team so far. Thompson must fix the problems on both sides of the ball if the Packers are going to be Super Bowl contenders.
