Overnight Open Thread (11 Jan 2013)

Alright! Thank God it's Friday. But all is not well here. Looks like the flu bug has hit my humble abode. Oh well. Let's start off the ONT with a little Ode To The Pug.

Mad Flying Skillz

So you want to be a pilot?

The spin was supposed to be a normal erect spin to the right, but for various unintentional reasons the spin went flat, up until that point I had never flat spun an aircraft. I eventualy mananged to get the aircraft into a normal erect spin from which I was able to recover. This aircraft is not fitted with an electric starter motor, so I was unable to restart the engine. During the "flare" to land the main undercarriage caught the top wires of a barbed wire fence that was invisible to me. After coming to rest inverted I waited 20mins for the rescue services to come and right the aircraft so I was able to exit via the outward opening canopy. The aircraft rotated 26 times total, I was extremely dissorientated after the recovery to straight and level flight, and was unable to read the instruments. From the video I estimate I recovered at about 700ft from an entry altitude of 3500ft. If you listen carefully you will hear me say:"I think this is it". At that stage I did not think I would be able to recover. However I continued to try various control inputs based on the aircraft attitude and rotational rate, which eventually effected a recovery.
My thanks go to the emergency services that found me and allowed my escape.

Brings back memories of approach to stall and LAPLs (low altitude power loss) training back in the day.

Sex Appeal

High Heels Give Women More Attractive Gait. Gait? Yeah, that's really what most guys notice. I heard that all the time hanging out with the guys. Dude, check out that gait.

Hospital Brothel

Um has anyone really read all of Obamacare yet? I'm curious if Hospital Brothels are covered. Does not sound like your typical brothel though. You have to bring your own date as it is not part of the package. Your essentially paying for a "luxury suite" in a friggin' hospital. For extra you can add a "sex skills expert" to critique your performance or something.

According to the sex professor, Peng Xiaohui from Huazhong Normal University, invited to the press conference, they once treated a couple having fertility problems. The reason the couple with a doctorate degree failed to conceive a baby after three years of marriage was found to be that the husband had mistaken his wife’s belly button for her vagina!

On second thought, maybe the Chinese do need these type of things.

Disney's Take On Empire Strikes Back

It's still better than any of the prequels.

Video Game Of The Year

I'll just quote Kratos on this one. Forget about God Of War, Starcraft, Mass Effect, Call Of Duty...ad infinitum. The newest game that'll hit the market on March 8th, courtesy of a cool $100K tax payer funded grant from the NEA, is HERAdventure.

A new video game featuring a black alien female superhero delivered to Earth to fight global warming is about to hit the market thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Obama administration.

The National Endowment for the Arts is funding the Spelman College of Atlanta, Ga.’s multi-episode game called “HERadventure.” In the grant announcement made last year, the NEA said the story “focuses on a young female superhero sent to Earth to save her own planet from devastation because of climate changes caused by social issues impacting women and girls.”

h/t Kratos

Question Of The Day

A dumb one of course as a lot of folks across the class spectrum partake. Why Do Rich And Famous People Always Sunbathe Topless?

Doggeh Video

Bonus Doggeh material: Ugliest Dog Competition. I'm pretty sure Helen Thomas would still win.

14 The Perpetuation of Racial Inequality in Schools

As has been mentioned before, one of the core problems with Affirmative Action is that it does not actually address the cause of unequal outcomes when it comes to race. The dark side of this is that it assumes that some kids are assumed to be incapable of achieving anything because of their race. Perhaps even more troubling, than the “equality of dunces” is purposefully writing off whole segments of America’s youth because they are part of a low-scoring ethnic/racial group. Florida, for example, has endorsed racially based academic goals.

41 Seeing as Friday is usually dog day on the ONT...

I've got a recent dog story too.

There's a dog at the office and when I'm in twice a week or so, I take him for a walk. There's a manicured area with picnic benches next to the parking lot and around it and edging the parking lot there is wild area of longish grass.

In fall with the grass and prickly weeds dead, I'd let him nose around in there. And we've had a couple of walks in the snow this winter when he's done the same--sniffing around and getting a scent and then digging through the (then) 3" of snow searching for field mice.

On Thursday we had a January thaw that other Eastern commenters have noted and 3/4 of the snow has melted and the areas where I walk him are flooded a bit that I suppose has driven the mice up from their holes in the dirt with the (for them) flooding. So he was doing his usual nosing around and digging through the snow and the dirt and he's really excited as usual but at one point especially and while he's busy digging through the grass I see a fat dark grey mouse make an escape along the edge of the parking lot paved area.

I say aloud as is my wont when walking the dog, "I guess your nose is alot better than your eye sight." He jumps to another spot and you can hear another mouse and the dog gets a slight grip on it but I restrain the dog enough so that the (wounded?) mouse manages to get away. I restrain him a bit more until the quarry are gone and then let him nose around a bit more but then take him back to the office with him happily sniffing around all the way back including around some of the planted trees--undoubtedly hoping for a squirrel sighting too.

It's not my dog so I don't want him eating field mice (although indifferent to him killing them) in case it causes a problem with him like getting worms or something.

I was in today too but it was raining heavily so I wouldn't take him out and that had him pretty whiny a few times. I played with the tugging toy with him for 5 minutes and then he took the tug toy to the door as if to say, "Hey, dummy, I want to play outside. What part of that don't you understand?"

Thursday was by and large a good day. They got her off of the paralytics and now just have her sedated.

Today was not as good.. she has spiked a new fever and my wakeup call this morning was requesting permission for an amnio. Amnio was done on baby b, baby a was too dar down to safwly reach. I got to see the little miracles again.

Preliminary results came back good for b and doctor actually said 80% chance a is good too.

Her fever ia still high and they are now changing her central line to control for that vector of infection.

Researchers say the attraction stems from the fact that heels make a woman’s gait more feminine. High heels require a slightly adjusted way of walking, one that involves shorter steps and more hip movement. Since these characteristics are specific to women, overemphasizing these traits would in essence increase one’s femininity, they say, and by extension, one’s attractiveness to a male.

Who else knows this?

178 Well, I'm staggering into the ONT after attempting to sleep with Snoring Husband (he's been sleeping in a comfy chair and ottoman since his hand surgery), back in bed tonight for the first time in ages.

God help me, I love him, but I could easily put a pillow over his face tonight and wake up tomorrow to the police and go, "What?"

I've taken two melatonin. I'm so tired, but trying to sleep next to him is like trying to spoon a fucking chainsaw.

183 One of the best reviews of Lagavulin 16

"You open the bottle and the smell hits you. This ain't no frilly Scotch. This Scotch is going to put hair in places you may not be accustomed to having it. You take a sip and your voice drops. You take a second sip and suddenly you have an oversized sword in your left hand. At this point your wife is confused and the kids are scared, but there's no turning back. After the third sip the accent comes. Slowly at first. An 'aye' here, a 'lad' there. But slowly takes a back seat after the fourth sip. Your accent is now full steam, you look out the window and Brian Cox nods in approval. A kilt falls from the ceiling as you realize you're now naked. You stand proud, take the fifth sip, and your wife looks at you with hunger in her eyes. It's a good day to be a Scotch drinker."

I heard that, originally, they were going to have a boss battle with a Wahabi imam, but it made the game freeze and crash, and it made the Xbox 360 they were testing the game on overheat and melt.

I was real sick about 5 years ago and the docs were doing tests in the ER. They did a lumbar puncture. First ER I went to, the doc completely fucked it up. Stabbed me six or seven times and never got it right. Unbelievable pain.

Symptoms didn't go away, so I went to a different ER the next day. Doc wants to do same test. I'm freaking. Explain what happened, he looks at my back and GOES OFF. Assures me that was butchery, he won't do that and will make sure I feel nothing.

First he gave me Darvocet to ease the pain I was in. Let that soak for a while. Then ready for test. Gives me Atavan. Waits a few minutes. "How are you feeling?" "Better, but still kinda nervous." "Nurse, give it to him again." Couple minutes later, "How bout now?" *giggling* "Whatever."

After the test is done, Morphine. I was Fucked. Up. Something. Good.

Sick us on him, you have to at least find out before he strokes out (that is, you know, the usual end for sleep apnea that goes untreated).

I've had the darth vader machine for over 8 years now. It's rough while you try out different gear until you find the right fit, and then suddenly YOU ARE SLEEPING BETTER THAN YOU EVER HAVE BEFORE!

Also, Darth Vader is cool.

First of all, it weighs less. Second, it's not on that tight. Third, it's positive air pressure, if the pressure is correct it should *ease* your breathing, not make you feel like you're fighting for it.

Modern machines also adapt to exhalation so you're not fighting the pressure at all.

The feeling of being "tied down" and having things strapped to you can get you, especially if you have claustrophobia.

The cool thing is, not only is it easier to sleep once you get used to it, I always used to struggle for an hour or more to go to sleep, but wearing the Darth Vader machine "trains" you to go to sleep when you put it on.

People worry it will make them less aware of noises in sleep, small noises still wake me up.

I never had that issue with my CPAP but I did not like donning the level 3 hazmat with SCBA suit. A CPAP pushes constantly SCBA gear has some kind of valve that only lets air out when there is a negative pressure to it. That is likely the difference to why I'm OK with CPAP but not SCBA.

I had a lump like that in 1995, and the surgeon removed it in his office. 11 years ago, that lump came back in same exact spot. I wasn't concerned. A few weeks later another lump appeared and I said F! I went to Dr. then for mammogram, nothing showed up on mammogram. Then I had to wait hours for ultrasound. Head of women's imaging doctor assured me that they were nothing, and being little bully that I am, I made him agreed to biopsy then, he agreed as long as someone stayed to help with the machine. I was right about both. One was nothing, the other a fast growing cancer.

I trust my feelings more than some doctors. If I listened to him, I wouldn't be around.

493 I never had that issue with my CPAP but I did not
like donning the level 3 hazmat with SCBA suit. A CPAP pushes constantly
SCBA gear has some kind of valve that only lets air out when there is a
negative pressure to it. That is likely the difference to why I'm OK
with CPAP but not SCBA.

Posted by: Buzzsaw at January 11, 2013 11:25 PM (qo244)

I have to spend a few minutes in the SCBA outfit every three years when I do my H2S Alive course in order to work in the oil patch here. It never bothered me. The good instructors emphasize that you should try to just relax and breathe normally. If ones is nervous, it's easy to start hyperventilating and burn off the air tank absurdly fast. They do, by the way, maintain positive pressure in the facepiece, in order to ensure that toxic gases can't seep in and poison the wearer.

509 Finally got to see The Hobbit tonight. I liked it. Didn't mind the LOTR connections and similarities since it is in the same world. Probably could have done it with the two movies and cut out some of the extra stuff, but eh still done well.

The trailers had "After Earth" which looks like "I am Legend in the distant future" Then there was "Beautiful Creatures" which looks like "Twilight with witches" though I actually think it looks more well done partly because they decided COLOR was good to have in a movie. And then there was a new trailer for "Warm Bodies" whichis actually thefirst trailer but the second one I saw. The second trailer made it look like Twilight with zombies and some comedy, but the one before The Hobbit made it look even funnier and possibly worth watching.

If you have the professional versions for Windows, you should be able to install and run it through the "WinXPMode" virtual machine you can download for free.

I have a bunch of such programs running on a Win 7 64-bit via the virtual machine just fine.

532 > Global warming my ass.

Global Warming happens every Day, and is most extreme in Daytimes during Summer.

Global Cooling happens every Night, and is most extreme in Nighttimes during Winter.

It's the Sun, and our Earth's Orbit, of course.

Whether it was Copernicus vs the Catholic Church, or Anthony Watts vs the IPCC, the facts don't change.

Sun just doesn't care about us, and we are deluded in thinking we have meaningful influence on climate by something as stupid as trivial amounts of Co2 (short summary - changes in temperature occur BEFORE changes in Co2).

Pollution, habitat destruction, et c, - all are another matter. Who wants to live downwind of an open pit dump?

BTW - anyone else see NASA's webpage, titled "Solar Variabilty and Terrestial Climate" (science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2013/08jan_sunclimate/)?

I picked up this speech by John Adams over at Taxes, Stupidity and Death. Yeah, modern man is so much smarter than the Founding Fathers. Try and follow along fellow Morons: TO THE OFFICERS OF THE FIRST BRIGADE OF THE THIRD
DIVISION OF THE MILITIA OF MASSACHUSETTS
11 October, 1798
GENTLEMEN
I have received from Major-General Hull and Brigadier-General Walker your unanimous address from Lexington, animated with a martial spirit, and expressed with a military dignity becoming your character and the memorable plains on which it was adopted.
While our country remains untainted with the principles and manners which are now producing desolation in so many parts of the world; while she continues sincere, and incapable of insidious and impious policy, we shall have the strongest reason to rejoice in the local destination assigned us by Providence. But should the people of America once become capable of that deep simulation towards one another, and towards foreign nations, which assumes the language of justice and moderation while it is practising iniquity and extravagance, and displays in the most captivating manner the charming pictures of candor, frankness, and sincerity, while it is rioting in rapine and insolence, this country will be the most miserable habitation in the world; because we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
An address from the officers commanding two thousand eight hundred men, consisting of such substantial citizens as are able and willing at their own expense completely to arm and clothe themselves in handsome uniforms, does honor to that division of the militia which has done so much honor to its country.
Oaths in this country are as yet universally considered as sacred obligations. That which you have taken and so solemnly repeated on that venerable spot, is an ample pledge of your sincerity and devotion to your country and its government.JOHN ADAMS.

The rights of the people, shall not be infringed........

Meaning A firearm is only a FIREARM..if it has bullets to shoot from it.

A FIREARM sans bullets....is a club or a very expensive hammer or a door-stop.
To BEAR ARMS...MEANS a GUN WITH BULLETS. Any attempt to seperate the Gun from the BULLETS is a De-Facto attempt to INFRINGE!
Which by the way, is a direct violation of the 2nd! Get on it folks, the Obama stream media is attempting toplay with words to fit the kool-aid and make us think like them.
Don't drink the Barry-aid.....ever!

You can only call it a FIREARM if it has BULLETS! The2 elements together MAKE IT A FIREARM and thus the elements together can only be called a FIREARM......do I need to do this more....in depth????

638 One hundred thirty eight years ago, the Supreme Court wrote that the right to keep and bear arms:

“…is not a right granted by the Constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence.”

The case was United States v. Cruikshank; and the Court made it clear that the right to keep and bear arms is an inalienable right, God-given and independent of any mandatory approbation by men or their laws for its force and legitimacy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Cruikshank

In D.C. v Heller, the Court reaffirms that the 2nd Amendment “codifies” the pre-existing right to keep and bear arms; it does not “give” us that right.

t has always been widely understood that the Second Amendment, like the First and Fourth Amendments, codified a pre-existing right. The very text of the Second Amendment implicitly recognizes the pre-existence of the right and declares only that it “shall not be infringed.”

God-given and inalienable! What don't they understand dammit!!!

Most of it worked. The crowd of dwarves is almost the point of having so many....the added stuff was pretty decent....the really painful bits involved Dr. Wizard and his turbobunnies and, oddly, inside the Goblin Kingdom. I'd have rather seen something clever where Gandalf sees the logical weakness of the jerry-rigged structure than go against character where the goblins weren't small-minded, paranoid, and prone to 1000-to-1 melees. The Goblin King would have had them in cages, within cages, suspended on chains, with archers to shoot them, and other archers to shoot the original archers if they proved inattentive. For Gandalf (who helped sing the world into existence and who was a Maiar of Aule, who devised the material of the the world) to walk in, look at the whole chaotic jumble, and kick a random-looking board that started a chain-reaction cave-in is actually more believable -- and would have been better cinema, besides.

Well, I would normally say sign up for a beginner's course. They have classroom-only courses to get started and then you can work your way to the range as your confidence improves.

There are some good videos from people like Front Sight, Gunsite, Thunder Valley, etc, and some sell videos and some of them are available on YouTube or whatever. So start by watching, then take a course, then hit the range.

Or just watch John Woo movies, that can work too.

Airgun. Same principle, at first. Can shoot one inside of the privacy of your own domicile. No reg, no ID.

All of the basic firearm rules apply. Finger off the trigger until you wish something ill. Line up the sights. Basic maintenance. Etc.

My amateur opinion only.

656 Learning to shoot. Just my $0.02.

Buy a pellet gun with a decent scope - and learn the principals of aiming, breathing, and pulling the trigger. In the backyard for cheap ($75).
Aim small - miss small. And shoot at the squirrels.

Then graduate to .22, and then center-fire.

Still in Oakland, some babe in arms with a ski-mask pointed his shakey hand and a rusty .32 auto in my face and robbed me of the contents of my medic bag because I had broken the first rule of being at an ATM in OAKLAND after sundown. While working in an E.R on night shift, I stopped a man who was attempting to slam a mag into a .45 and shoot himself...I cupped my hand over the mag insert at the bottom of the gun he clutched and prayed for what seemed like hours,
(only minutes) until hospital security arrived and we went to ground and got the gun away...I snagged the mag and cut my fingers because I was clutching it so tight.......

Firearms are tools.....only......if you put a crazy person with a firearm...ALL BETS OFF.......
Night to you all

680 My folks have the small Gadsden on the mailbox post, and I have a full sized on the wall in the office, and the sticker on the bumper.

And we fly the Star-Spangled off of a bracket at the front porch on the holidays (to tell the truth, I'm too lazy to observe flag etiquette, and too proud to neglect it).

So, my employers niece, dumb, hawt, 28, South-Cackalackian, "administrative assistant" - eponymous "Redneck Barbi" asked: "what's the deal with that snake flag?"

So, yeah, I think it must be separate flag poles?

I didn't have the sense of dread that I have now, back in 2008, because the behavior of Obama and Congress hadn't gotten to the stupid stage yet, with absolute rejection of their sworn duty and rule of law.

So, no overbearing doom and gloom then, because it was correctable in the next election.

And in Nov 2012, it got worse. Much worse.

I'm just another civilian so probably nothing I have to relate is going to mean much.

However, I'm convinced, convinced that you have that answer in yourself. Perhaps your grand-dad was a service member. Perhaps your uncle or aunt was a patriot. You are an American.

We're not here by accident, nor are we here for good. Our job, IMHO, is to find that reason and live up to the ideal.

Funny you picked that.

I just finished reading a book on the French and Indian Wars, as I was interested in what did give Washington his tactical experience from the Indians.

That war lasted 70 YEARS.

It was basically a battle between the French and British (colonists) over the Ohio Valley. Different groups of Indians would fight for either side.

Massacres were common.

'All politics are local' goes the saying. It's not entirely true, of course. 'All politics are assumptions,' might be more accurate.

The GOP and the Right in general hasn't questioned the predicate for that argument; the idea that the bigger the government, the worse it performs. Few of our elected douchbags have argued that.

If you have to get into the weeds of politics with acquaintences, use the wonderfully oblique Harvard method; ask them questions that reach the core of their beliefs.

Ask, with a smile, about what they assume. Are people basically good? Should they be reformed at the point of a gun? Etc.

Honesty to a leftie is like a carcass to a desert. All is laid bare.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at January 12, 2013 03:52 AM (djdc7)

696 Actually,

If this current wave of gun control hysteria gets appropriately doused by our Federal Legislative Branch, I'm gonna take that as the first sign of 2013, that there is a glimmer of some things being right in this Grand Old U S of A.

And I'll put my flag back up.

Still need a third spot.

Guess I'll need to plan an additional flagpole for Spring.

Posted by: Anna Puma

With the amount of gases, including CO2, that a volcano can put out, they do not seem to be a factor in the AGW mindset for some reason. I have questioned that after the one in Iceland blew up a few years ago. Consider also, the ones that are in the deeeeep seas that are emitting gases 24/7 for how many years? And warmists are worried about my SUV?

Posted by: Bruce at January 12, 2013 07:27 AM (v4HdX)

736 They're worried about your SUV because they want to control you.

AGW is just a convenient device in order to enable them to fulfill their desires.

Posted by: chemjeff at January 12, 2013 07:36 AM (BBWjt)

737 Tambora and Pinatubo are two such eruptions. Though it seems the ash particulate that gets thrown up, if Tambora and looking at weather records are an indiciation, seems more localized so some areas did not experience the temperature drop and spectacular sunsets the New England area saw. Of course how to make AGW bats screech, mention that giant heater in space called the Sun. So as chemjeff says, its all about control - serfs don't deserve SUVs.
