| Overnight Open Thread (1-10-2013)Whoever Controls the Past (Weather) Controls the Future There are lots of stories appearing declaring 2012 to be the hottest year ever in the US. But is this really true? Possibly - but we simply don't know for sure: But was 2012 really the warmest year on record in the U.S.? It may have been, but the truth is that we don't know. There are two reasons for this. First, the historical data sets published by NCDC and NOAA lack integrity. Those organizations, which receive many millions of government dollars to promote global warming theory, do not publish raw data. Rather, as we explained here, they first adjust the data. Now you might think that the actual measurements from weather station in the past would be rock-solid and reliable data that you could count on. But you'd be wrong. The Below is a copy of the national weather data summary for February 1934. If we look at, say Arizona, for the month we see that the state average temperature for that month was 52.0°F. [Ed.: This is the paper version that was published at the time.] And even if the historical weather station raw data hasn't been fiddled with, there's still reason to be skeptical of whether current data really reflects global climate change. Here's a temperature monitoring station (circled in red) in Marysville, CA. As an untrained, not-accredited, non-climate scientist see if you can spot possible reasons for why it might show a slight increase in annual temperature other than AGW.
Another Candidate For Dumbest Gun Control Article of the Year Yes 'smart' guns will solve everything - just as long as you don't mind giving up your freedom, security, and privacy to your mostly-reliable gun 'guardian': How might this work? Start with locational "self-awareness." Guns should know where they are and if another gun is nearby. Global positioning systems can meet most of the need, refining a gun's location to the building level, even within buildings. Control of the gun would remain in the hand of the person carrying it, but the ability to fire multiple shots in crowded areas or when no other guns are present would be limited by software that understands where the gun is being used. 13 Tax Increases to Expect for 2013 Higher payroll taxes, a higher death tax rate, and a higher capital gains rate are just the first three. The Equality of Dunces
One of the core problems with Affirmative Action is that it does not actually address the cause of unequal outcomes when it comes to race. Proponents are often focused myopically on the equality of outcome, as opposed to the equality of opportunity. Seeking to help improve the education of those racial and ethnic groups that are doing poorly academically, for whatever reason one might ascribe, might prove to be an arduous, though ultimately fulfilling, task. Rather then face that difficulty, a more easy option is available to those who want to achieve an equality of outcome: Dumbing down the curriculum to the point where so many more people pass, that differences between the passing rates of different racial and ethnic groups shrinks or even disappears. Forbes had an article a while back about a survey of professional women. Something like 3/4s of them wanted to marry, have kids, and be stay at home moms. However, they also wanted a man who had at least a Master's degree and made more than they did, which pretty much meant six figures. The majority of women currently in college would be better served by skipping it and instead finding work and spending time at the gym and the library and maybe take some community college courses on the side for their personal enrichment. Cripes, the only reason why we think it's hotter now is because back in the 70's air conditioning was just beginning to become widespread. I was in college from 83-87 and we did not have air conditioning in the dorms or in most of the academic halls. The dining hall. library, and science hall were all air conditioned, so as moved up, you planned your schedule accordingly.
Hell, my first apartment was not air conditioned, and this past summer after the week long power outage, we got real accustomed to not having ac. Even the cars that we had back then weren't air conditioned. There was nothing like driving with the windows down, stereo cranked, and holding your beer out the window. Hey kids- Just popping in for a little bit. Long day...
A bit off topic, but it is the ONT. Sven put me on Molon Labe, and I was previously unfamiliar, but it has been forefront on my mind these last few weeks. So I now take pause to pose the question: If the rule of law has itself become illegal, what avenues do we have left to reclaim our rights, that don’t violate those such-same laws? How do you petition a government for rights - that has already violated those rights by ruling them away? How do you petition for redress? I see no avenue by supplicating and politely "asking" to get my rights back. I see no avenue in further politicking. For WE HAVE! Only to have the same ilk strip more of our rights from us. They obviously do not understand yet that the Constitution and our God-given rights hold supreme over their corrupt rule of law. The 2nd Amendment was placed in the Constitution to ensure that the American people would be able to defend themselves against any future government that sought to become a tyranny. That article on how to pick a husband could have been condensed in one sentence: If you're a single mom, only date single dads. It only makes sense to seek out those who's lived a similar life as you.
I'm single/without kids, and I see a lot of single moms get all kinds of pissed at me because they're not even on my radar. Yep. I'm not raising someone else's kids, so you're shit out of luck. When they're nice and grown and there's not a chance in hell I'll be on the hook for child support in case the relationships goes south, then maybe we can revisit the issue. Financial issues are one of the biggest killers of relationships. Having one partner already established is better for acouple than two idiots who have no idea about money trying to figure it all out. Any marriage is going to have plenty of ups and downs to experience, and a man who is in his early 30s who marries a woman in her early to mid twenties isn't going to be so far ahead that they don't have to work at it. Project much? Exaggerate much? There is no way, lady, that you have come close to knowing how hard or how easy every job compared to taking care of kids. Ever think that maybe you're doing it wrong? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying raising kids is easy. Just not harder than every job in the whole world. This Penelope is a drama queen and given my limited experience, I would guess that she's a mild chaos causer. Drama queens have a tendency to insert chaos into the simplest routines as this gives them more opportunity to dramatize and feel disempowered or empowered depending on what they're emotion they're trying to evoke from their audience. (husband, kids, relatives, friends). I'm interested in this latest personality "key" thingy but not to the point of paying some maestro to whip up a category for me. Especially since it's probably a computer generated quiz of some sort and really doesn't have much human interaction about it. The comments were highly amusing. The article also points out that it's not necessarily men that have been keeping women out of the boardroom. Another interesting point but this will go over many of their heads. Where do people meet women these days? That's my problem. I'm in a male dominated industry, a lot of my hobbies involve me being at home alone or doing things with other guys(shooting, golf, etc). When I go to the gym male to female ratio is like 20 to 1. Even at political events, the men to women ratio is like 10 to 1. People in my generation are starting their lives a lot later and as a result the traditional way of doing things is changing. Do people still meet their future wives in college? Yeah, but probably not as much as they used to 20, 30 or more years ago. And don't say bars. People don't go to bars to find husbands or wives, they go there for other reasons. Unless we're talking about older comedies when funny was actually funny and not just people shouting loudly at the camera. LIKE AM I BEING FUNNY NOW I"M BEING VERY LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS OH MY GOD THIS IS SO FUNNY IS IT NOT LOOK AT ME WORLD!!!!!!! In other words I liked comedy before Will Ferrell ruined it. @ Those Mighty Jugs: I'm haven't even lived yet. If we let it die, it needs to be after I do.
145 I'm curious to see a gameplan that reacts to more realistic action on the part of the White House. They won't go door to door seizing guns--that'd provoke a response. So it'll be half measures, bologna tactics, I think they called it in Yes, Prime Minister. The Russians won't invade Dover, they'll just meander over the boarder accidentally-on-purpose. Then stay, and so on. And they'll always leave you a way out. How out we to plan if we assume that they'll be very shrewd in their actions? Won't they do something that gives us a "reasonable" response while it diminishes our freedom? And then just claim overreaction if we try to resist. All this furor and raging is fun, but they won't do anything to publicly justify armed resistance. What are they likely to do? How are they likely to pigeon-hole us, and how do we respond without being corn-holed? This is what I'd like to see discussed. Posted by: .87c at January 10, 2013 11:15 PM (zyuCw) 181

------ I really don't think "one person established" or "two idiots" are the only two options. And I can't fathom waiting til 30 to get married (especially if you're Christian and believe in abstinence before marriage) so I have a hard time picturing too many men wanting that. Also, while financial issues are the cause of way too many divorces, it's not lack of money that's the problem---it's different ways of managing it, disagreements about what it will be spent on. I dunno. I got married young, my husband somewhat older but not financially well-established. We've built two businesses and had four kids together, and I love knowing that we did it completely together---I kind of want the same thing for my kids when they're ready to get married, that us-vs-the-world thing. It's one of the things that really holds us together. I think if the one-person-established thing works for you, it's great and certainly I wouldn't tell my sister or my daughter "no, don't marry the guy with the great career!" but I'd also hate to think that my sons aren't eligible to marry girls their age, that they have to hang on til they're 30 . To each their own. Posted by: Jenny Tries Too Hard at January 10, 2013 11:16 PM (b+8h9) 183

This Penelope is a drama queen and given my limited experience, I would guess that she's a mild chaos causer.
She's openly admitted to attacking her husband, and him hitting her. She's harrassed him while he's been trying to work and pretty much treated him like shit on several occasions. I read the other day that roughly 4,400 Americans were killed in combat during our War for Independence.
During that same time, over 11,000 Americans died, of every cruelty imaginable, on British prison ships or in prison camps. Every day these men were offered the choice of life in the King's service or a prisoner's death. It's obvious the choice over 11,000 of them made, and the total contempt they felt for the few among them who chose otherwise. The men who founded this country pledged "when a man's word actually meant something", their lives, their fortunes and their "sacred honor" to the building of America, and the ideals of Freedom & Liberty. History records that most of these men lost their lives and their fortunes in that effort but, like 11,000 American prisoners, very few lost their "honor". TFG the SCoaMF, and his minions, are not the first to try forcing tyranny down the throats of ordinary honorable Americans. While it is true that our founding fathers were extraordinary men, the prisoners and their brothers fighting a seemingly hopeless war were, like you and me, just "ordinary men". Honor is the soul of a man -- be he patrician or plebe, extraordinary or ordinary. Honor is the repository of all that is decent and courageous in each man, hence being "sacred" in nature. I strive each day, as a husband, father, son, brother, businessman, friend... to be "honorable". I have to look myself in the mirror, and answer to my God. It's all I have. Posted by: Capt. And that's why I don't like generalizing. People are different, situations are different, If you had a decent not so fucked up two parent family and your parents did their job, odds are you will be more mature at a younger age and able to handle the stress. If not, it could take you until your thirties or beyond to mature. The secret is mature. The Narcissism of the youth does not allow for healthy relationships. The way I see it, I don't want a single mother/divorcee because I'm not going to raise some other guy's kids or deal with the ghosts of her failed marriage. Ditto on 1, 2) meh, I'm ok with older women, 3) I think it depends on the degree, if it's not a useless as horseshit degree (like say women's studies or Shakesperean English)
There are a few female friends of mine that I would have a relationship with even if they're over 30, but that's because I've known them a while. The graduate thing may be flexible in rare circumstances, but generally it isn't worth the hassle. The problem is that a lot of women with graduate degrees are going to evaluate you based on whether or not you have one. It ties into the comments above about women wanting a man who can provide for them and any kids. If she has plans to go to graduate school later in life, I have no problem with that. Posted by: .87c at January 10, 2013 11:15 PM (zyuCw) BuSab. EHarmony actually weeds out people who aren't serious and uses decent
questions to match people up, but they do cost some money. ********************************** I know of one happy marriage from eHarmony too. You know who always says eHarmony works though? Women. You know who always says it never works? Men. I've tried both by the way, the quality is not different, at least not in my experience. Some of my matches I had already seen on other dating sites, including one who I learned had a boyfriend, but joined eHarmony because she was "curious" And I was paying serious money for this. Might as well get that crap for free. Besides, it's all about volume, and the free sites simply have more of that than the paid ones do, for obvious reasons. I gave up on it, because I've started noticing patterns and that women on these sites aren't nearly as diverse as you'd hope they'd be. Does your local police officer or sheriff deputy want do come to your house to confiscate your firearm? Hell no. Is a federal agent going to come to your home to confiscate your weapon(s)? Where do people meet women these days?
Posted by: Ben Part of the problem is that if you DO meet someone, a huge number of the single people out there, of both sexes, aren't interested in commitment, or even a serious relationship. I know two people who really wanted to meet the right person and settle down, and used online dating sites. I'm not sure which ones, but they were the better known ones. One woman, after dating guys who just weren't interested in settling down, met a guy on the dating site, who lived within a mile of her, was divorced and had a young daughter. They've been married for about 5 years now, had a couple more kids, and are very happy. The thing with some of these sites is that, at least a good share of the people are tired of just screwing around. The leftists in this country now feel that they are in a position to do what they have wanted to do for decades: impose their elitist views on the population and take control of how we live, what we do, what we think, and what God we can worship.
They now control the schools, the universities, the mainstream media, many of the courts, the United States Senate, and most of the largest cities in the country. According to the results of the election, the majority of the people in the country voted to abolish our Republican form of government and trash the Constitution. They voted for virtually unlimited government, redistribution of wealth through higher taxes, limits on individual liberties, and out of control spending & debt. They voted to end the free market economic system and place an unmanageable burden on their own children and grandchildren -- so they can collect their free shit now! The left believes that this is their moment in history when they impose their will on the American people, the time when we all submit to their will and become compliant subjects who will acknowledge their "intellectual superiority" and march in lockstep to the beat of their corrupt drummers. But, they are frightened of the Constitution -- most specifically The Bill of Rights and the 2nd Amendment. They know that in order to be successful, they must disarm the American people, and they must do it now. The effort has already begun in an effort to "protect the children". The left has always been willing to exploit tragedy to get its way. All of this proposed legislation is just window dressing to lay the ground work for the ultimate goal of outlawing the private ownership of all firearms in the United States. Once that is accomplished, the government will move to confiscate. That is why the Obama administration is purchasing millions of rounds of ammunition for federal bureaucracies. FEMA and DHS are training to engage in urban warfare against American citizens. I keep hearing that it will never happen "because the bills will not pass Congress". and, I agree that we can defeat legislation in the House -- but Obama and the left plan to simply bypass Congress and impose gun control by Executive order and by signing the UN Small Arms treaty. It is happening now. It is for real. Prepare. I'm out. I'm beat and sick of my own sanctimony. Good night all. Posted by: Capt. Backfire at January 10, 2013 11:49 PM (mkb9H) 282

Hard to say if NY will actually DO anything about guns, so far it's just posturing. Most of the furor comes from the blue cities, upstate ( where I live) the reception is decidedly chilly regarding any more restriction. Both Dems and pubs share a common thread about guns here, it's a mostly rural area. Guns are a part of life here, so the idea of confiscation, registry of ALL guns, and MORE regs gets universal contempt. Posted by: irongrampa at January 10, 2013 11:53 PM (SAMxH) 297

If they're clever (and don't think they can't be) the confiscation and full registration is just rhetoric and to establish the extreme limits.
After "negotiating" with Boner, they might even think they can get it but they ready to back up a notch or two. Look for the final to be something which advances the ball without inciting rebellion. Like someone said up thread; bologna slicing. Then every one relaxes because most of what they want won't apply to them for now and they don't feel the passion to throw their lives onto the castle walls because there isn't an ultimate intrusion to raise their blood. That's Federal. Some States now, might actually try it (good testing ground for any future Federal roll out) New York looks ripe. Already has universal registration and can easily track the majority of owners. They'll do it like the IRS does it when you get caught underpaying taxes; they send you a letter to comply. Thus alerting you to the eminent threat of physical enforcement and you do all their work for them. Remember Government workers are pretty lazy and don't want to take risks. It's like killing someone with arsenic. You slip them a tiny dose every day and they just get sicker and sicker and soon enough they die. well, 225 years ago to the day Alexander Hamilton wrote this on Jan 10, 1788
I think the last few lines pretty much proves that yes we are supposed to be on even keel with the military as far as weapons as a counter to any standing military, and any ass sucking lib talking point about what the 2nd amendment means is pure bullshit. "But though the scheme of disciplining the whole nation must be abandoned as mischievous or impracticable; yet it is a matter of the utmost importance that a well-digested plan should, as soon as possible, be adopted for the proper establishment of the militia. The attention of the government ought particularly to be directed to the formation of a select corps of moderate extent, upon such principles as will really fit them for service in case of need. By thus circumscribing the plan, it will be possible to have an excellent body of well-trained militia, ready to take the field whenever the defense of the State shall require it. This will not only lessen the call for military establishments, but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens. This appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army, and the best possible security against it, if it should exist." The premise for "The Curious Disappearance of Seamus Muldoon" (search on Amazon)is that during the search for my F-I-L, everybody we ran across had some cockamamie theory, ranging from "maybe he went back to his first wife", to "maybe he was abducted by aliens". Each of those "what-ifs" became the nucleus of a whimsical chapter. Although the events were tragic, the story actually wrote itself, in tribute to Jack. And some of it is actually rather funny. Short version- the pervert neighbor killed Jack in a dispute and hid the body. Cops have no desire to solve the case, but the solution is out there somewhere. I found another gem from Alexander Hamilton in federalist #28. I keep finding little bits and pieces, but its real clear that they knew the people ultimately would be the last line of defense against tyranny, and they did NOT trust a powerful centralized government. the last paragraph the word "regulated" does mean supplied, funded, etc, and NOT regulated as in the leftest version of regulated.
""Independent of all other reasonings upon the subject, it is a full answer to those who require a more peremptory provision against military establishments in time of peace, to say that the whole power of the proposed government is to be in the hands of the representatives of the people. This is the essential, and, after all, only efficacious security for the rights and privileges of the people, which is attainable in civil society. If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers, may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual state. In a single state, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair. The usurpers, clothed with the forms of legal authority, can too often crush the opposition in embryo. The smaller the extent of the territory, the more difficult will it be for the people to form a regular or systematic plan of opposition, and the more easy will it be to defeat their early efforts. Intelligence can be more speedily obtained of their preparations and movements, and the military force in the possession of the usurpers can be more rapidly directed against the part where the opposition has begun. In this situation there must be a peculiar coincidence of circumstances to insure success to the popular resistance. The obstacles to usurpation and the facilities of resistance increase with the increased extent of the state, provided the citizens understand their rights and are disposed to defend them. The natural strength of the people in a large community, in proportion to the artificial strength of the government, is greater than in a small, and of course more competent to a struggle with the attempts of the government to establish a tyranny. But in a confederacy the people, without exaggeration, may be said to be entirely the masters of their own fate. Power being almost always the rival of power, the general government will at all times stand ready to check the usurpations of the state governments, and these will have the same disposition towards the general government. The people, by throwing themselves into either scale, will infallibly make it preponderate. If their rights are invaded by either, they can make use of the other as the instrument of redress. How wise will it be in them by cherishing the union to preserve to themselves an advantage which can never be too highly prized! It may safely be received as an axiom in our political system, that the State governments will, in all possible contingencies, afford complete security against invasions of the public liberty by the national authority. Projects of usurpation cannot be masked under pretenses so likely to escape the penetration of select bodies of men, as of the people at large. The legislatures will have better means of information. They can discover the danger at a distance; and possessing all the organs of civil power, and the confidence of the people, they can at once adopt a regular plan of opposition, in which they can combine all the resources of the community. They can readily communicate with each other in the different States, and unite their common forces for the protection of their common liberty. The great extent of the country is a further security. We have already experienced its utility against the attacks of a foreign power. And it would have precisely the same effect against the enterprises of ambitious rulers in the national councils. If the federal army should be able to quell the resistance of one State, the distant States would have it in their power to make head with fresh forces. The advantages obtained in one place must be abandoned to subdue the opposition in others; and the moment the part which had been reduced to submission was left to itself, its efforts would be renewed, and its resistance revive. We should recollect that the extent of the military force must, at all events, be regulated by the resources of the country. For a long time to come, it will not be possible to maintain a large army; and as the means of doing this increase, the population and natural strength of the community will proportionably increase. When will the time arrive that the federal government can raise and maintain an army capable of erecting a despotism over the great body of the people of an immense empire, who are in a situation, through the medium of their State governments, to take measures for their own defense, with all the celerity, regularity, and system of independent nations? The apprehension may be considered as a disease, for which there can be found no cure in the resources of argument and reasoning"" Posted by: Berserker at January 11, 2013 12:31 AM (FMbng) 421

Seriously, where did all you goofballs meet your match? OK, so it's kind of convoluted..... When I first moved to Silicon Valley, the neighbor in the apartment next door shared the same last name. She was in the process of going from male to female in order to continue his submissive lesbian relationship with a woman whose husband had essentially drifted away into a Zen dojo. Anyway, in just being sociable, I got invited to local events put on by South Bay Circles and the Bay Area Pagan Assemblies (BAPA, IIRC, had an "adopt a freeway" sign). At some of those events, I kept meeting up with a zaftig female whose license plate said "strega" and ended up working about a block and a half from where she worked. So we went out to lunch a lot for a while, but she was probably more interested in someone seriously more into "The Craft" than accounting and told outrageous lies to get me set up with someone in her office....and that's how the BH and I got acquainted. As an extra bonus, the first heavy date with the BH was to the West Coast Computer Faire, only it rained and I thought it was still in the old place....so we drove up to BART in and got thoroughly drenched and squelched to the wrong venue until we ended up at the right one.....and kind of squished our way through the whole thing. Gotta talk about my art tomorrow at 6:30. No idea what to say. Other than coughing, clearing throat, incoherent babbling, then repeat. Which is what's gonna happen. Heh. A couple weeks back I stumbled upon a cheap DVD collection: Flash Gordon, Dune, Last Starfighter and the Battlestar Galactica movie/pilot. BSG did have its cheesy moments, and the robo-mutt was in several of those moments, but there was a real story lurking back there. And the movie (or pilot, whatever) did successfully get across the stakes of the conflict. Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at January 11, 2013 12:55 AM (QTHTd) I grew up watching that show on teh pre-cable television. Loved the show and the overall arc of the plot, but the individual shows were almost all the same: Cylons closing in. Need to do some mission. Boxie stows away on the mission. People on the mission die to save Boxie, Muffit finds a way to save them. The fleet would have had a better chance if they just double tapped Boxie and been done with it. It used M14 mags, so today would be called an AR10B Accuracy is ok, not a tack driver but 1 inch to 2 inch groups at 100 yards which is acceptable The US Army picked up the M-110 which uses diferent mags. Armalite introduced the AR10A that uses the same mag as the M-110(which is not a M14 mag) as far as the Pmag issue and AR10's can't say. Armalite makes good stuff. Obama’s nominee for Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is a revolving-door lobbyist who worked at Citigroup in 2008, and then got a $944,518 check from the failed bank on January 15, 2009, according to his financial disclosure statement. That was just weeks after Congress passed the Wall Street bailout, funneling $45 billion in taxpayer money to the bank. Also, in the 1990s, Lew worked at K Street lobbying firm Van Ness Feldman. This certainly undercuts Obama’s talk about closing the revolving door, keeping out lobbyists, and standing up to Wall Street. ------------------------------------- Above from Tim Carney at the Washington Examiner. The real problem with the weather station in teh asphalt parlking lot is that before urban crawl it was probably in an open field with a nice chilly breeze blowing by regularly, so now they compare the data and voila, the gauge in the heat sink has higher readings. I don't buy the AGW or even GW.I never bought it and I doubt I ever will by it. What about the arctic ice cover tipping point we supposedly hit a few years ago. Scam of the millennia. That being saidI hope I get a nice cave when they force us to stop heating our buildings. Posted by: Dirks Strewn at January 11, 2013 08:42 AM (KtwJs) 597

How can climate truthers stop this hoax ? Even the US Navy believes it. Even rational countries that we admire like Israel are fully behind it. The giant conspiracy may just be too big to overcome.

Dear Mr. of Spades,
How else would you monitor/determine AGW if you didn't place the device directly where those evil Human creatures gathered their "conveniences"! After all, aren't we talking about Human-caused climate change? Did you think scientists should be concerned about normal seasonal temperature variations over extended periods of time that might be affected by uncontrollable events such as sun spots, volcanoes, wildfires, and bloviating progressive media. I'm truly shocked and may even consider discontinuing my reading of your otherwise entertaining blog. Posted by: dejapa at January 11, 2013 11:03 AM (8O4V9) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0944 seconds. |
