NRA Membership Soars By 100,000 In 18 Days

Not having it.

“Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over,” a member of the organization tells Playbook this morning.

It's both good and bad that people are more connected to politics: It's good to see people actually doing their civic duty and expressing their opinions in tangible ways.

It's bad because it's only in bad times that Americans seem to care about politics -- our habit of being apolitical, and not even bothering to vote, seems to have come during the fat, contented years of the fifties and sixties. Now that times have turned officially interesting again (per the old aphorism, "may you be cursed to live in interesting times"), people are rediscovering that these things matter.

Meanwhile, Powerline notes how the left keeps shooting the same old blanks on gun control (click through Instapundit's link).

[Update - Andy]: Statement From the National Rifle Association of America Regarding Today's White House Task Force Meeting:

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.

We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

1 I fully expect some of the more outspoken members of Congress to attempt to brand the NRA a terrorist organization and then attempt to subpoena the membership rolls.

Ace, I hate to break it to you, but the 50's and 60's were not 'fat contented times'. The second half of the '60's almost saw this country blown apart by civil (dissent over the Viet Nam war)and racial strife. The dissent over OIF was trivial and driven entirely by the Media and the Democratic Party cohort, by comparison.
The 50's were full of the Cold War mentality, and a lot of people were worried about the future of the country.

We didn't have the impending economic crisis we have right now (of our own making), but things were not placid and simple.

90 Something I have been thinking for a very long time. In this Nation, the real power lies on the Right.

The Left may have political numerical superiority by embracing the fools of this nation, but when it comes down to who has the ability to scorch the earth, most of that ability lies on the Right side of the political spectrum. I Firmly believe that if it comes down to a war with the left, they will not survive it.

We are not France. We are not Russia. We are not Germany. They start an open conflict here and we will show them what happens when History doesn't follow the previous examples.

We have a Legacy of Independence. It is in our blood. We will remind them of it.

Oh I remember back in aught 8. When TFG first got elected. Ammo shortage? If you shot .30-06, .308 win or .223 rem you were SOL. If you shot something else most of your options were gone want 7mm Rem Mag in 160gr Nosler AB? Fuck you you'll take these generic soft points and be grateful we had those. F*king ammo sections of gun shops looked like a Soviet Union grocery store. If you reloaded, and needed primers, NOBODY had them. You couldn't even order them. It was August before stocks on primers became available.

206 It seems to me that Red States need to start pushing exempting legislation for Federal mandates and EO's regardless of whether they will currently stand up in the Federal courts.

If they get organized with enough numbers (30 or so) of states they can tie up the Feds in courts and passively encouraged civil disobedience in the interim.
If the movement is widespread enough, the Feds won't have the resources for enforcement, and perhaps force Vic's Article 5 Amendments Convention.

This can work for the 2nd Amendment Protections and Obamacare as well.

As a matter of fact the more the better. It's what the commies have been doing to us for decades.

208 "School safety," in NRA parlance, means cops on overtime, monstrously inflated budgets given to unions, and schools patrolled by legally unaccountable goons with nothing to do. No downsides there.

"Mental health issues" means locking up people who haven't committed crimes, or the NRA wouldn't be talking to the government about it. Criminals have a clear route to imprisonment already.

"The marketing of violence to our kids" is how anti-capitalists describe what happens when companies freely sell things and people freely buy them. I never thought of the NRA as anti-capitalist. I really only ever see them asking for money (and...giving it to politicians). But there it is, that anti-capitalist talk, being talked. In a conversation with the government. Hm.

And finally, "federal prosecutions of violent criminals" are prosecutions taken away from states whose purview those prosecutions Constitutionally are. Constitutionally. In the Constitution. That thing with the gun talk in it.

But yeah, the NRA is "single issue."

This wide variety of plans it has for us, all of which I recognize from when Hillary and Lieberman and Gore proposed them (non-partisan!), these are illusions.

Or not "issues," I guess.

(Except the mental health ones.)

221 Mental health issues" means locking up people who haven't committed crimes, or the NRA wouldn't be talking to the government about it. Criminals have a clear route to imprisonment already.

It's a bit more complex than that, and the NRA is right to bring it up. Most states have gutted their forcible commitment laws, and even where they have them the facilities are understaffed and underfunded.

I am not talking about locking up someone because they are an at-risk bullied dweeb, but it used to be that States could commit you against your will for up to 72 hours just to determine if you were a threat. That occured if a family member referred, you self-referred, or if the police picked you up and requested it. That doesn't exist anymore.

Example....the VA Tech shooter was referred for psychiatric assessment 2 or 3 times....but the state did nothing. It did nothing because their commitment laws had been repealed and mental health is a low priority generally.

Not making a value judgement here, it's just the way it is.
