School Tragedy Averted As Teacher Draws Her Gun on Crazed Gunman

Another story that the media isn't interested in for transparently obvious reasons.

“He pulled out his gun and started pointing it at people,” Thacker said.

Cowan trained a .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol at Riden’s face, said Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson. Carolyn Gudger, the school resource officer, drew her gun, then shielded the principal’s body with her own.

Thacker remembers Cowan shouting something – possibly including the words “10 years” – but she isn’t sure. She turned and ran out the set of public doors to the mulch pile in the front of the school, and hid behind bushes.

“He might shoot someone,” Thacker remembered thinking. “I just wanted to get out of there.”

Riden fled and Gudger inched back into the school, leading Cowan through the scattered pastel chairs in the empty cafeteria. It was a tactical move, meant to lure the gunman into a more contained place, Anderson said.

Gudger, the school resource officer (I called her a "teacher" in the headline just because I do not know what a "resource officer" is and I figure that most people don't either) held the gunman in a standoff for two minutes, until police arrived. After they did, the cops again demanded Cowen drop his gun. He didn't. Shooting broke out (I don't know who shot first, thus the passive voice) and Cowen was killed.

For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US 2nd Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room. Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but are in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position. In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike. They throw acid (Pakistan, UK), they throw fire bombs (France), they attack. What is worse, is, that the best way to stop a maniac is not psychology or jail or “talking to them”, it is a bullet in the head, that is why they are a maniac, because they are incapable of living in reality or stopping themselves.

32 A school shooting in the 90s, in MS, was stopped by the vice principal and his gun. When police came, the vp had the shooter, Luke Woodham, on the ground, the vice principal's boot on Woodham's chest. If I ran the internetz, the term 'Luke Woodham' would now be slang for 'sniveling bastard got completely defeated and humiliated'.

"Did you see that fight? Tony got completely Luke Woodhamed by that one guy."

Having that story---where the loner tries to take revenge and still gets pwned by the person they hate---would put a stop to these stupid fantasies that some of the shooters (the VA Tech and Columbine shooters come to mind) hold. The VA Tech guy hated "jocks" so it would've been beautiful if one of them, the dumber and more jock-like the better, had been able to put a stop to him, and the story been told.

lol, MFM, NORTHERN Virginia, suburb of DC, home to the "suburban sprawl" growth wars, defense contracting beltway bandits, dual income yaddayadda.

We have them at all middle and high schools, and have for some time. Not so much to protect from crazed loons, but because some of the older areas of the county (the few enclaves with any affordable housing) have their problems with illegal immigration (MS13 is big here) and other issues, and the newer areas have a lot of kids with plenty of stuff and not much supervision, so there are drug 9and other issues) in both the "rcih" and the "poor" schools.

Some discussion post-Newtown of extending resource officers into the elementaries now too, which heretofore have not had a constant presence, but have had for years the D.A.R.E. program, a combi-"say no to drugs"/"the deputy is your friend", where a deputy rotates among several schools teaching the course/program.

We have everything from old style Dems, progs, classic repubs, evangelical conservatives, ecofreaks, you name it.

And except for the yearly wrangling on every item in the budget, each of which has their diehard constituencies and detractors, by and large we likes us our resource officers--they're the modern neighborhood cop on the beat.

Officially, records of school shootings that were stopped by a good guy who had a gun are windexed off the radar screen because they don't fit the narrative. If these incidents are brought up by our side, the only significance the incident has whatsoever is that someone who shouldn't have had a gun, did have a gun, thus supporting their position of banning guns.

131 Also note that, even though the story is 2010, there were prior mental issues.

From the first link:

In a file at the Kingsport General Sessions courthouse, there is a handwritten note by a police detective:

“This is the fellow we discussed,” it reads. “He needs a mental eval.”

The note was written in 2001, after Cowan was charged
with stalking. According to court records, a newspaper carrier said
that twice he followed her as she drove her route. When she turned, he
turned. When she stopped, he stopped.

“At one point, he followed [her] into a driveway and
would not let her pull out,” the affidavit reads. “Both instances put
[the carrier] in fear as she does not know the defendant.”

The case was later dismissed because a witness did not show up at court.

Well, it's the CDC's number, not mine.

My point, as such, is that these studies show, paradoxically, that guns are safe.

You've got, at the least, a 99.99% safety record - not to mention these are guns carried illegally by teenagers, not a group known for good decision making.

205 New Russian nuclear sub enters service
By Vladimir Isachenkov - The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday Jan 10, 2013 9:52:39 EST
MOSCOW — The Russian navy on Thursday hoisted its flag on a new nuclear powered submarine intended to form a key part of the country’s future nuclear deterrent.

The Yury Dolgoruky, which carries 16 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, is the first of a new series of Borei-class submarines that will replace older Soviet-built ships. Another submarine of the same type is undergoing sea trials, and two others are under construction.

President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Yuri Dolgoruky’s crew during a conference call Thursday, hailing the ship as a “powerful weapon that will guarantee our security.”

“Submarines of that class will become an important element of sea-based strategic forces, a guarantor of global balance and security of Russia and its allies,” Putin said.

Commissioning of the new submarines is part of an ambitious arms modernization program that envisages spending more than 20 trillion rubles ($657 billion) on new weapons through 2020.

Putin said Thursday that 4 trillion rubles ($132 billion) of that money will be spent on commissioning the new submarines and other navy ships. “Modernization of the navy is one of the most important priorities in our work to strengthen the armed forces,” he said.

Putin said the navy will commission the total of eight Borei-class ICBM nuclear submarines and eight nuclear submarines of a different Yasen class intended to hunt for enemy ships.

And we continue to gut our Military

Which group would have benefitted from being being armed?
A.) The Tutsis in Rawanda where .5 to 1 million were killed
B.) The Armenians in Ottoman Empire where 1 to 1.5 million were killed
C.) The Jews in Nazi Germany where 5.5 to 8 million were killed
D.) The Ukrainians in the Soviet Union where six-eight million were starved to death
E.) The Chinese during the Great Leap Forward where 18-30 million were starved to death
If you answered A, B, C, D, or E, you are wrong. The correct answer is, "All of them."

276 In the high schools where I taught the SRO's were local cops who were on campus to deal with basic mischief. A courtyard fight would be handled by him, and he could choose whether to charge with assault or use school discipline. He oversaw mediation between kids (and sometimes gangs) with long-standing disputes, trained us in gang graffiti (so we could report gang activity if we saw it on notebooks, desks, etc.).

Seeing a kid arrested in front of you is a decent deterrent if you're a borderline miscreant. If we'd had to wait an hour for the patrol car, it would have lost some of its efficacy.

My guess is it was updated after Sandy Hook since it was an example of a potential school shooting that was averted by an armed school employee.

288 In my county, police assign school resource officers to Junior High schools and to High schools, not to elementary schools. Traditionally, their purpose has been to assist school officials in deling with internal school disciplinary problems. The school in this case was a High school. If Elementary schools and Kindergartens are going to be targeted by nut jobs, police departments may find it necessary to man elementary schools as well.

In any case, this is not a situation where an armed citizen prevented a shooting. It was a cop.

Even little kids have a good sense of right and wrong. They seek out an adult who can verify this for them. Failing that influence, they must wait until adolescence. If the proper adult still fails to appear, they must wait until adulthood to have that instinct verfied.

In TFG's case, how he was raised was so bad, he just gave up and is now taking out his childhood frustrations on the entire country. I'll wager that if he were given an emotional maturity test, he'd score as an 8-year-old. This is pathetic in a grown man.

328 "A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a law enforcement officer who is assigned to either an elementary, middle, or high school. The main goal of the SRO is to prevent juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relations between youth and law enforcement."

From Citrus County Sheriff's Office web site.

So she's not a teacher or a civilian. More like what NRA has proposed, the one liberals dismissed as extreme and impractical.

329 I've thought that what schools ought to have is biathlon teams. Even down here in Albuquerque. At least one of the middle schools promotes golden glove boxing (which horrifies the district, and they may have gotten it stopped) because it is such a motivator for the hispanic students. How much of a motivation would it be if you passed your classes and kept your nose clean and you got to get shooting lessons... even if you had to learn to ski at the same time? Start a competition with a "sister school" in Montana or Minnesota.

When I was in sixth grade the American Legion offered gun safety classes and we shot 22s. Demystify weapons and promote responsibility. Make firearms something that the squeaky-clean fellows do instead of a glamorous gangster thing.

330 I find it interesting when I watched this story on national news, they mentioned the resource officer "talked" the guy out of leaving, no mention that the resource officer had a weapon.

I taught weapon safety at Boy Scout camp as a young scoutmaster, what I learned shore came in handy in boot camp.

331 No Ace. What you described in your example for #1 is called the Abilene Paradox, which you both failed to break because of "social niceties."

And btw, fun fact for the day: did y'all know the word "nice" means you don't know anything? It means you're ignorant, literally. Back in French to Latin it means you know nothing, that you just agree with what everyone says because you don't have any information of your own because you are too ignorant and/or foolish. Look it up in Webster's. And remember that context the next time someone tells you to "just be nice" or "just don't say anything and be nice," or whatever, and think about the motivation of who is saying it. The goal is usually to silence you and shut down the conversation. It is a guilt trip because if you are not "nice" then what are you? You're "mean if you say those things" you're being hurtful, hateful, whatever. I was guilty of it myself. I would tell my kids to "be nice" all the time. I stopped. Now I use words more directed at the behavior I am seeking, like "be friendly" or "be courteous" "be polite" "be respectful."

332 Watched the video of that standoff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEDEi8ZZ--E). The deputies may have been on-scene in 120 seconds, but they were apparently dithering around figuring out where they wanted to enter the building (you can hear the person who called 911 from the office talking to the dispatcher about it). More than 10 minutes after the gun is drawn and the 911 call is initiated, the YouTube video ends with NO DEPUTIES IN SIGHT yet. The poor Resource Officer has been in a Mexican Standoff (can I still say that?) with this guy the whole time!
