Happy Thursday.

Yes, D.C. journos are still digging into the coup for Speaker that never happened. I don't see the fascination.

Also, apparently some idiots think that strict gun control advocacy can be the foundation of a serious presidential campaign. FY, NQ.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, January 10, 2013. On this day in 1863 the first subway opened in London. Wonder how many people were pushed on to the tracks that first year?

So here we go

reveille; reveille (bangs trashcan with baton)

reveille; reveille (bangs trashcan with baton some more)

Heave out and trice up... Smoking lamp is lighted in all authorized smoking areas.

Rise and shine, morning glories... Up and at' em.

Drop your cocks and grab your socks... Move it ladies. AOS is being served...

2 January 19th will be gun appreciation day.

The organizers are encouraging gun-rights supporters to “send a message” to President Obama two days before his second inauguration by “lining up around the block” at gun shops, ranges and shows with a copy of the Constitution, U.S. flags and a “Hands off my Guns” signs.

Spending will have to be reduced by default.

You lower the debt ceiling by 500 million dollars every year after that forcing more spending reductions and belt tightening.

The US has more than enough money to operate the government and meet it's mandatory spending and debt servicing.

The President and the Donks will cry but so what let them.

93 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the daily briefing, Gabe and Vic.

Today the paste-eating dimwit occupying the VPs office plans to “listen” to the NRA and various gun reps. Suuuurrre. I’d love to see Wayne LaPierre pull a thousand dollars out of his pocket and offer it to Choo-Choo Joey if he could: a) define “assault weapon” and b) spell “assault weapon.” Today is the ultimate in political theater.

And speaking of political theater brings us to the Oscar nominations today. Expected to be tapped for Best Picture are Argo (didn’t see), the tendentious Lincoln (script by Tony “Reagan let AIDS kill the gays” Kushner? No, thanks), the Triumph of the Will of the dog-eating Kenyan, Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables. I expect one of the latter two to get the win, but Argo may just eke out the nod.

Yesterday a couple of the Horde were mentioning the 1927 Fritz Lang masterpiece Metropolis, so let’s turn our attention there. There really aren’t any stories about the movie, per se (German films rarely have any amusing anecdotes, oddly enough). But there are two stories about director Lang.

One concerns his first wife, Lisa Rosenthal. Almost nothing is known about her – she might have been a nurse or a cabaret dancer. She might even have been Jewish. When later biographers came to chronicle Lang’s life, he never spoke of her and did his best to forget her. Why?

Well, as David Thomson notes in his new book The Big Screen, it seems that one day in 1920, Lisa came home to find Lang making love to the screenwriter Thea von Harbou. As you might expect, heated words flew. And then, something else flew, and Lisa Rosenthal was dead; killed by a bullet from Lang’s own revolver. Suicide or murder? No one knows. But from 1921, von Harbou was Lang’s chosen screenwriter – Metropolis is hers – and later, when Lang left Germany, she joined the Nazi Party.

The second story about Lang is one he told himself: it seems that after his 1932 film The Testament of Dr. Mabuse was banned by the Nazis, Lang was “invited” to meet with Joseph Goebbels. According to the director, the meeting was cordial, even friendly, with Goebbels expressing his admiration for Lang’s films and slyly suggesting that a few cuts to Mabuse would get it back on the screens of the Reich. But that wasn’t important. Dr. Goebbels was head of the Propaganda Division, in charge of all media; how would Lang like to head up all moviemaking in Germany?

As Lang later told the story, he thought he was only moments away from a concentration camp; if he could, he would have to grab some money and get out of the country. He sweated through the interview, constantly watching the clock (banks closed at 3.00pm in those days), despairing as Goebbels talked and talked and talked long past five. With a shaky smile, Lang promised to have an answer the next day. Walking out of Goebbels’ office on watery knees, he went home, grabbed money and jewelry and took the first train out of Berlin and to safety.

Lang told various versions of the story over the years, and it’s passed as gospel into many movie histories. But it’s not true. Patrick McGilligan, the author of a 1997 biography of Lang, found that the director made several European trips after his supposed terrifying meeting with Goebbels, and, in fact, didn’t leave Berlin altogether until July of 1933. as well, there is no mention of the meeting in Goebbels’ diaries – and he was a movie fanatic, nearly divorcing his wife Magda to marry the Czech actress Lida Baarova.

Many people – especially in the German refugee community – never believed Lang’s escape story. Gottfried Reinhart (the son of the great director Max Reinhardt) spoke for all of them: “Lang could have stayed in Germany, there’s no question about it. If they hadn’t found out that he was half-Jewish. He tried to stay. He was a dishonorable man, a totally cynical man. I don’t think he gave a damn.”

So Fritz Lang didn’t take up Goebbels’ offer. But Leni Reifenstahl did. So who deserves more damnation?

But back to Metropolis. Here is its female star, the luscious, 18-year old Brigitte Helm - http://tinyurl.com/am67ybq.

Here she is in a production shot as the “false Maria” robot created by the mad inventor Rotwang – http://tinyurl.com/bfu9u7d.

I thought you might say that. Given that he is utterly without a track record, and given the experience with another unknown, Marco Rubio, and given that he's perceived as much farther right than either Romney or Ryan, it is difficult to support him. It could well be that he is a stellar pol and administrator, visionary, will remain pure on the issues, and will be charismatic enough for the LIVs, but that is a long way from proven at this point. 130 - "Yes, D.C. journos are still digging into the coup for Speaker that never happened. I don't see the fascination."

Are you really that naive? The answers are obvious. To continue pushing the meme of "GOP divided." To rub in some salt. To tweak the fringe right, which tends to set them off, thereby helping the Democrats. To continue fostering those schisms.

- "Also, apparently some idiots think that strict gun control advocacy can be the foundation of a serious presidential campaign. FY, NQ."

But keep in mind we've reached a point in our devolution that issues no longer matter all that much in presidential campaigns. Things have degenerated into politics by pure racial and other demographic identities. In 2016 blacks will vote for the Dem nominee 90-10 (or more, if Deval Patrick got the nod) and Hispanics will vote for the Dem nominee at least 70-30. That's automatic. Then there are the other other Dem identity groups, e.g., young students, those who are dependent upon the government, airheaded wealthy types along the coasts, etc. Gun control matters not. Lastly, there's the non-voting conservative miasma. If five million erstwhile conservatives stay home and don't vote in 2016, to "send their messages," the Dem will prevail, regardless of his or her position on gun control.

Long story short, don't overestimate the body politic. It's not at all inconceivable that an overt gun control leftist Democrat could win the presidency.

149 I had an old friend who passed away several years ago. He was quite experienced in Ohio politics. Here is what he told me:

Politicians always try to placate their loyal supporters, for this is where their votes and campaign funding come from. If you consistently, as a conservative, fail to vote for those who are not as conservative as you, they will perceive you as an undependable voter, and will therefore try to mine dependable supporters from those who show up and vote, usually moving the politician more into the moderate camp.

This is one of the reasons conservative congressmen often seem to move a bit more to the center. If you keep telling them that you will NOT vote for them, well, they pretty much try to work with those who WILL vote for them.

Ryan's constituency is actually a democrat majority. He is never going to vote like Trey Gowdy. He would not last in his position as a representative if he did. I personally prefer Gowdy, but I often wonder if supporting him wouldn't be like Pickett's charge.

157 All this hand-wringing about finding the "pure" candidate for 2016, it's nonsense. Ryan comes from a fairly liberal district, expecting 98%+ on his Heritage Foundation scorecard would be unrealistic--and there's a good chance he's actually more conservative than many other potential nominees we will hear about over the next 3 years. Let's agree there's no such thing as the perfect candidate and accept that we will neverbe allowed by the press to havea GOP Obama--so newbies like Cruz are a no-go. We need someone with solid (not perfect--no such beast) conservative/federalist credentials, with few and/or known skeletons.

Who are we left with? The RINOs to weak conservatives (Jeb Bush and ilk), The young firebrand who may not be as pure as we first thought (Rubio), the pragmatists (Ryan), and the horde favorite (Perry). Yes, I'm deliberately leaving any women off--the MSM would destroy them, especially if Hillary!! were nominated. My bias remains for Perry, but the truth is that Ryan may be the best that we can hope for, and if not ideal that's still not as bad as some here believe.

169 BurtTC. Unless you have seen the most recent restoration release that includes about 40 minutes that came from a forgotten South American copy you will be confused.

Metropolis' mutilation after its original Berlin release and the quest to find all the excised pieces over the following decades is a great story of detective work, luck, and dedication.

As LizDem and I mentioned the other day. Until the South American footage was spliced in everyone could not really understand how things went awry that made Jon's father go see Rotwang.

You might have seen the 1984 re-imagining of Metropolis that featured a soundtrack by Queen.

177 #157 I agree, pretty much. Cruz said or did something that irritated the heck out of me, but this early in the morning I cannot remember it. Oh, yes, it was a scathing denunciation of Romney after the election. Bad manners and poor form, if you ask me.

We have to get the democrats dislodged from their moral high ground. That means each and every prominent dem should be mocked for their lavish life styles and whatever other hypocrisy can be unearthed (such as Obama's lack of women nominees). Dem voters should be told how they were robbed (your EBT card isn't worth squat because Obama is making food prices go up through inflation, for example).

One thing I would like to see is a chart showing the net worth of individual Congressmen and Senators when the first came to Washington and where it is now. I don't think most voters think they are choosing lottery winners when they vote.

No need to apologize, Burt - Metropolis is an acquired taste, and not for everyone. In fact, a lot of film writers say it looks beautiful but is a profoundly silly film. Hell, I could give you a long list of the silents that bore the hell out of me, and I like them. But try renting or buying the new, restored version that has the original music score - it has additional scenes that help explain what's going on.

The one I have is definitely a cheap copy, and I thought maybe there was something lost in the visuals. My problem was though, the story itself didn't compel me to keep watching. It seemed... trite, although I can't quite remember exactly how at this point.

I realize one of the problem older movies have, is that they've been copied and redone over and over, so they suffer from having been the original for worse projects that came later. Still, I can't undo the years of change that make it impossible for me to see something through the eyes of the original creators.

Since the Democrats' (wildly successful) campaign strategy consists of smearing ANYBODY the GOP nominates
the situation is best described by Otter in "Animal House"- "I've got news for you pal, they're going to nail us no matter what we do- so we might as well have a good time."

And the good time we should be having is doing our own smear jobs on Democrats (especially that pederast Harry Reid) and their enablers in the media.

He absolutely failed to express any opinion on the stimulus or Obamacare, at least from what I can tell. He has made no effort to stand up to the left's character assassinations, except a very late "quit attacking my brother" comment YEARS after he should have said something. He failed (as did most GOP men) to stand up against the unreasonable attacks on Sarah Palin. He curries favor with the education industry, which I think is one of the problems this country has. And his wife tried to smuggle clothes home from Europe without paying duty.

I think my phraseology was wrong. When I said "bypass the GOP" I meant not allowing them to choose our candidates. They do not want a repeat of 2010, insofar as the conservative/Tea Party movement gave them the victory. We have to start now to make sure that our candidates wind up on the ballot representing the GOP and NOT theirs.

Yes the GOP is dead to me, but they have the infrastructure and wherewithal to crush any third party. Plus it will divide the vote and ensure a Dem victory. But something has to change.

Posted by: Conservative Crank, yet another work computer at January 10, 2013 08:46 AM (d7H2D)

251 Once again, I point to the main problem with our country: No one teaches delayed gratification. This is why we have the national debt, because no one says "You will have to wait until we have the money to fund your special study on gay rat sex habits. You may re-apply next year, but funding will probably not be available until 2090."

And we have this problem within the right as well. Everyone wants to see a candidate who will do EXACTLY what they want RIGHT NOW!

It isn't going to happen. People need to realize Conservative Cranks is right. The left has leveraged the lack of delayed gratification amongst the voters into power and are on the brink of bringing the country down. While democrats are often undisiplined in their personal lives, they are organized and work as the Borg when it comes to moving their goals. We should learn from this.

Went shopping for .22 ammo last night. Wal-mart was out. Big-R got 20 bricks in that morning and sold out in 2 hours so they were out and said they did not know if or when they would get more in stock! Going to another City today and look again. Big-R had '-06 ammo and a 'decent' supply of handgun ammo, no .223's.
On the bright side i was running late getting home so stopped by KFC for some dead bird. I ordered 8 piece chicken only and the manager told me there was a 12 minute wait on original recipe. I said it was ok to add a few pieces extra crispy to make the 8 'if' he added an extra wing. He said fine...

295 http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2010/aug/30/man-shot-sullivan-central-high-school/

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — An armed man was fatally shot by deputies Monday at an East Tennessee high school after he went inside and pointed a gun at the principal’s head, a sheriff said.

"There’s no doubt in my mind he went there to kill someone today," Sheriff Wayne Anderson said at a Monday afternoon news conference hours after the gunfire at Sullivan Central High School. "I don’t know who, and I don’t know why."

WJHL-TV reported that Anderson said a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will likely determine the motive.

No students or teachers were hurt and school was dismissed at 10:30 a.m. EDT.

Anderson said Thomas Richard Cowan, 62, of Kingsport confronted a security officer Monday morning after entering the school about 9 a.m.

Cowan entered the school with a .380-caliber semiautomatic and a .25-caliber handgun in his back pocket, Anderson said. The sheriff said that after Cowan grabbed the principal, Melanie Riden, and pointed the semiautomatic at her head, student resource officer Carolyn Gudger pulled her gun on Cowan and moved the principal to safety.

Anderson said Gudger moved Cowan down the hall and away from the cafeteria to a science pod. When Sullivan County deputies arrived, they ordered the gunman to drop his weapon, and he allegedly pointed it in their direction. He then pointed it back toward the school resource officer, prompting deputies to fire, Anderson said.

But I think that we need to make this the sort of double-secret probation goal of as many conservatives as possible.

Also, why is it that Cops are the only ones who can get the good handguns, shotguns, and "assault rifles" (which really aren't), and the evil, horrible, no good, very bad gun manufactures funnel all the evil guns that will just kill people all one their own to the civilian population?

338 Funny story I posted last night on the ONT but will repost again for the LOL's...

My buddy had bought some ammo last month, a pretty sizeable amount, after my urging before prices went up any further. This was right before Sandy Hook happened. Just earlier this week, I asked him if he had ever picked up any extra mags for a rifle he bought at a show back in late Nov. He said no, so I told him to go buy some mags before they were all gone too. He said that he wasn't going to buy anything else online and shipped to his house because his wife had intercepted his ammo package and hid it from him. LOL!!!

I told him to go ahead and buy the mags, but have them shipped to me so I could receive them and give them to him later, without his wife hijacking them too. Yesterday, I come home and my wife asks me why we are getting my friend's mail. I start to tell her the whole backstory and she says she had a suspicion about what was in the package and told me jokingly that she was tempted to hide it from me herself!

TROLOLOLOLOLOL!!!! Women! WTF is wrong with them?!?!

Before anyone says to have a serious talk with my wife about our marriage arrangements, I want to let you know that she was just griefing me and would never do something like that for real. Pranking me was in her vows.

NYC, Albany, Ithaca and Syracuse do not reflect the sentiments of the rest of the state. And I would think that a sizable minority of the aforementioned cities do not either.

Mrs. Nighthawk and I were out for a drive along the Potomac one afternoon. We pulled into a park along the highway and as we went to leave a jogger darted right out in front of the car. Mrs. Nighthawk reflexively slammed on the brakes and narrowly missed him.

The jogger was James Carville.

I've never let her forget how she blew her chance to do her country a great service.

Two great stories like this:

1 - I was walking on a deserted Brooklyn Heights street early one Sunday morning and, lo and behold, Chuck Schumer walks by my - all alone! As he passed, our eyes met and I gave him a dirty look.

2 - Not long after OJ was acquitted, my friend's dad was walking in Greenwich Village one evening and infamous dream team lawyer Barry Sheck walked by. As he did, my friend's day looked at him and said, in deep voice, "you're a bad man." He said Sheck was so taken aback that he thought he shit his pants.

Heh.

390 Franz Aliquo and Frank Rinaldi, founders of New York's 666 Burger food truck, are not big fans of the gourmet burger movement. In fact, they hate it.

His answer was to create a burger that is, what he said was wasteful and useless: The $666 Douche Burger.

"I was looking for the most expensive ingredients possible and the ingredients that would make absolutely no sense together," Aliquo said.

401 Franz Aliquo, the truck’s owner, deconstructed the burger with stunning
eloquence. “Itconsists of “a f—ing burger filled and topped with rich
people s–t,” he wrote on Facebook.
Indeed, the burger’s creators seem to have rounded up the most
expensive ingredients and slapped on two buns. “Kobe beef patty (wrapped
in gold leaf), foie gras, caviar, lobster, truffles, imported aged
gruyere cheese (melted with champagne steam) kopi luwak bbq sauce and
Himalayan rock salt. It may not taste good, but it will make you feel
rich as f–k. Douche.”

That actually sounds tasty. I can't afford it, but it does sound good.

402 Those who would sacrifice Liberty in exchange for Security deserve neither - something someone once said and that Cuomo should be reminded of. As well as NY as a whole.

Preggo GF and I are arguing this out right now. Cuomo is determined to make me into a felon and have cops barging in to seize my property - which the local meathead cops would do, shooting the dog, me, her, whatever. We live close by where Spengler did that crap to the firefighters so feelings are high.

I will not give 'em up because FU that's why. She will not move because preggo that's why. Don't know what to do, honestly. Only solution I have come to right now is to store them all in PA close enough by in a self-storage place, wait until the kid gets born then hightail it out of here. But I suspect she still won't move. This is fucking killing me.
