| New "Acting School" with International Film and Television Star Nick SearcyLast night's show was damned good. I think it was the best premiere they've done. Right off the bat they made Raylan more interesting. Two of the best shows last season were about Raylan's law-breaking to avoid his ex-wife Winona getting arrested for her own law-breaking. (She impulsively stole $20,000 from police evidence and then didn't know what the hell to do-- she immediately thought better of it.) So this season they introduce the idea that Raylan is now illegally (or at least very contrary to employer policy) running down fugitives for a bounty hunter in his spare hours, for $3000 a pop. The whole show last night was about Raylan doing one of these off-book jobs, and then trying to fix things -- without attracting any police attention -- when unexpected events began to spin things into complication and disaster. So it looks like Raylan, who has a lot of hell-raising, anger, and law-breaking in him by birth, is going to spend the season dancing on a knife's edge. There was no Nick Searcy, but, almost making up for it, the show introduced what I hope will be a recurring plot element, which I call "Partial Nudity." And what glorious partial nudity it was. Not the typical Partial Nudity networks have been "daringly" showing ever third month for ten years now, by which I mean male partial nudity. I mean real partial nudity, like a chick with T&A all over the place. Porn's been around so long now I forgot what a nice little thrill it was to see partial nudity. I used to scour the HBO guide for that "content warning advisory" (which was really just an advertisement for the movie). I actually rewound it twice (total of three times viewing). Yes, I did. I bet a lot of you did too. So, season's off to a great start. Damn fine episode with Raylan beginning to drift into the gravitational fields of his crazy criminal father and crazy criminal friend, and a heaping helping of butt and sideboob. They had me at butt and sideboob,* but then they attached a whole show to the end of it. Well done, International Film and Television Star Nick Searcy. Well done.* Actually I have a bad suspicion they already decided they'd show Timothy Olyphant's ass, in some kind of play for female viewers, and realized that would piss the show's many male viewers off (given that there has been no female nudity). So I think they are pre-mollifying us to keep us from getting mad later. I think it's a pre-mitigation effort. But for the moment, I approve. Comments1
Nick Searcy, a moron's moron.

no it's some new girl. Winona's MIA. They just say she's away having the baby or whatever (it's still on the way). I don't know what's going on-- they kind of wrote her off the show halfway. At the very last ep of the previous season, she was staying at her sister's because: 1) trying to get over the shock of Gary, the husband, being murdered right on her doorstep, and because Raylan was involved with that. 2) Raylan choosing to resuce Loretta instead of leaving with her to raise their child together. #2 pissed off a lot of viewers into making her character suddenly turn into a selfish bitch. A little girl, again involved with Raylan, is about to be murdered and Winona wants him to forget about her and leave town. Posted by: EC at January 09, 2013 02:52 PM (GQ8sn) 37

After a while you're going to have your audience saying, "Okay, so, this psycho is out there killing more and more people. This is kind of depressing." Criminal Minds and its ilk are bad enough, but at least in THOSE shows the villain is usually different week to week, so you have closure by the end of the episode. The ONLY thing I find interesting about the NFL Draft is the wrangling that goes on behind the scenes. Who trades what to which team and why. I think you can figure out a lot about a team's chances by what they do or don't do during the draft. Do they go all in on a flashy player with high risk but the potential for low reward? Or do they spread out their picks across the second or third rounds and try to find some working, utility-grade diamonds in the rough. Other than that it's boring as shit. Quarles' first appearance made me believe that he'd be a good villain, a true heavy. But by the end of the season, he was reduced to a gay, meth-addled, fuck-up. The writers totally trashed his character from something dangerous to a weak sister. Posted by: EC at January 09, 2013 03:17 PM (GQ8sn) 101

I feel SO badly for the Chiefs this year. If they'd been #1 last year they could have had their pick of QBs. Clemens was "cleared" by a Congressional Committee, if anyone can claim innocence it's him. Certainly no more proof against him than Jackson. Yes, common sense and my own two eyes lead me to think Clemens used roids, but that's a shaky standard. Of all of them, I'd expect Clemens to get in first.

Finally, in 2002 they get the #1 pick and it's in the weakest draft in years, so they had to settled for mega-bust Kwame Brown. I hope the Chiefs pick Geno Smith, and they should be able to do so if they're smart by trading down and getting picks for a better draft in the future. However, at least there's the consolation that if they have to reach and pick him at #1 (above the level of Smith's talent, as good as he is), at least the new rookie salary cap limits the potential downside if he goes bust. so I went to my congressthing's website (Ed Perlmutter, CO7) to contact him about the gun issue. Anyway, I emailed: Do you support my Constitutional right to own firearms, including semiautomatic handguns, for personal protection? Do you support my right under Colorado law to have a concealed handgun on my person in public? Are you in favor of requiring gun owners to register their guns with federal state or local government? Are you in favor of confiscating firearms from the citizenry in general? Do you believe the 2nd Amendment protects my personal right to keep and bear arms for my personal protection? OT: Who is responsible for the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre? Clue: It rhymes "the shoes."
Israel’s Mossad death squads are likely responsible for the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. last month, according to a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Dr. James H. Fetzer, in an op-ed published in an official Iranian state news outlet late last month, wrote that members of Israel’s security force known as the Mossad had carried out the shooting to “strike fear in the hearts of Americans.” “The killing of children is a signature of terror ops conducted by agents of Israel,” he wrote. “[W]ho better to slaughter American children than Israelis, who deliberately murder Palestinian children. I realize that the Cowboys derped their way out of yet another post-season, but I didn't think that was particularly the fault of the defense. It seemed to be an endemic inabilityof the whole team to close games. If you're going to ditch Rob, then wouldn't it make sense to ditch the WHOLE coaching staff and start fresh? It was the adam's apple that ruined it.
Funny story. A friend of mine told me a story from his army days. He was in during the Clinton years, over in Germany. He was an officer (O3) and one of his Sgt's was talking to him about some hooker he had over the weekend. He was going on about her oral skills and said she got really aggressive to the point that he had stop her from eating him alive. He said he tried to be gentle as he could and thumped her adam's apple to force her to de-latch. My friend stopped him right there. "Uh, sergeant....girls don't have an adam's apple." The sergeant opened his mouth to say something, and then stopped because it dawned on him that there was nothing he could have said to save himself. He just walked away and never ever brought it up again. Posted by: EC at January 09, 2013 03:48 PM (GQ8sn) 174

I thought it was decent, especially since they are shying away from just doing another big bad for the season and making it a mystery story regarding the dead man in a parachute and his drugs. OT: Who is responsible for the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre? Clue: It rhymes "the shoes." Israel’s Mossad death squads are likely responsible for the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. last month, according to a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Dr. Posted by: toby928© for TB at January 09, 2013 02:51 PM (QupBk) Gotcha! That's a show I don't get. I mean, how can it last? After a while you're going to have your audience saying, "Okay, so, this psycho is out there killing more and more people. This is kind of depressing." Criminal Minds and its ilk are bad enough, but at least in THOSE shows the villain is usually different week to week, so you have closure by the end of the episode. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit at January 09, 2013 02:55 PM (4df7R) MWR, I'm guessing from the commercials I've seen for "The Following"- is an extended version mash-up of "silence of the lambs" and "the Red Dragon" The main serial killer villain appears to be a Hannibal Lector type i.e.. the super-genius serial killer caught and in prison but who has seeded/nurtured other serial killers- hence "the following". He's like the Jesus of Murder or something. In one commercial they make quick mention of this being like a new religion. So, each week will have a new "Buffalo Bob" with surprise serial killers popping up among Kevin Bacon's friends, co-workers, and family. Kind of like "Battlestar Galactica" and their lame game of who's the Cylon. Posted by: naturalfake at January 09, 2013 03:55 PM (UgFxe) 198

Eventually, you know Boyd is gonna come crawling to Raylan to shut down the Preacher to save his crinimal business. Loved "Constable Bob" too, great new comic character who ends up saving Raylan's ass.
BTW, the opening scene harks back toatrue storyof a drug runner named Andrew Thornton from Kentucky who accidentally landing by parachute in Tennessee and was killed back in the 80s. There was a book called "Bluegrass Conspiracy" about it. You probably have to be a Kentuckian to have picked up in this. I am, which is why I love the hell out of this show. The cool thing to look for now is more parallels to Thornton's story. Thornton's known assciates included the chuef of staff of Gov. John Y. Brown. Yeah well, he shouldn't have bet on his team. Even when betting for your team you might place yourself in position to make a bad strategic decision (lets say use up a good pitcher that you'll need in the next series) to win in the here and now that isn't the best decision for winning in the season. One of the great things about "Justified" is Timothy Olyphant's absolute killer line delivery. From the way he said "Why wait?" to Quarles last season to last night's "Bob, I've got shit in the car I don't want crushed"; he nails it.

As part of the David Gragory thread, I present this from Legal Insrrection
A former Fort Drum soldier who was injured in special forces training was arrested Sunday night when he was found with prohibited rounds of ammunition, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said. Nathan H. Haddad, 32, of 25240 Waddingham Road, town of LeRay, faces five felony counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was released without bail before town of Watertown Justice Andrew N. Capone, and is ordered to appear Wednesday in town of LeRay Court. Deputies made the arrest shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Steinhilber Road in the town of LeRay, where Mr. Haddad is accused of possessing five 30-round AR-15 magazines of ammunition. He is cited under a state penal law statute that prohibits possession of “a large capacity ammunition feeding device.” The ammunition was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to the sheriff’s office. So when Kevin Bacon catches the bad guy at the end of the season, is there going to be a new baddie every season? Then it becomes kind of formulaic. I mean, after they got out in Prison Break, there was really no point to the show.
Posted by: EC at January 09, 2013 04:09 PM (GQ8sn) Yeah, I don't get it. After a while it's like, "Okay. That's three copycats down. Who's next?" Frankly I'd expect Kevin Bacon's character to just kill himself off eventually and remove his cat from the cat-and-mouse game, thus removing the "fun" of it all. I don't how it would work for sports, though, so if that's a deal breaker for you, give it some more thought.
Depending on your cable package, ESPN3 streams a lot of college games (basketball, football, volleyball, soccer). MLB has radio and TV streaming packages, and one free streaming video game every day whether you subscribe or not. I've used both of these because I don't live in the same market as my teams do (MLB audio was $20 last year for all 162 Brewers games, so I don't feel like I'm wasting money if I miss games to work or travel). I don't know about NFL; I live in one teams' market and the other team shows up most weeks. My understanding is there are bootleg video sites on the internets. I end up in sports bars about three times a year to see games I can't get audio or video of at home, and even with my snobby beer tastes that's still about a month of cable. I came down on liking Constable Bob, too. I found out elsewhere that Constable is a realoffice in Kentucky, duly elected by the voters and for that and other reasons it stays around, even though every once in a while the FOP campaigns to end it.
Last night's episode was full of what makes Justified so much fun to watch- Raylan being a likable jerk, and Boyd being an intense mastermind, and all thegreat supporting characters- Ava, Arlo, Ellie Mae. Would you want to work with Raylan? He's apparently supposed to be "on duty"with Rachel the Marshal Lady, but he just ups and goes, and while it was hard to tell for sure it seemed like he was gone the whole day. It was great to watch him thinking of how to get out the shed standoff without attracting any more attention than he already had, though. A last word on Bob the Constable, too, that showed me that even a comic supportingcharacter on this show gets treated better than leads do on many others: Raylan deals with idiot criminals, like Dewey Crowe, that he has no use for and generally mistreats. He deals with smart criminals like Dickie Bennett (and, to an extent, Boyd)that he disdains and mistreats. He even takes advantage of his smart coworkers, Rachel, Tim, and Art, and can only manage the barest of apologies for those instances. But Bob knew something he didn't- that stolen cars were taken to the local junkyard and how much they went for- and Bob immediately realized how Raylan had played him. Raylan seemed to genuinely apologize to him at the end of the show, which bodes well for whenever he pops back up. Posted by: KingCranium at January 09, 2013 04:19 PM (+Uv5V) 271

And for reasons I can’t understand, CAIR is vocally opposed to Brennan.
(CNSNews.com) – As a college student in the 1970s, John Brennan, President Obama’s nominee for CIA director, traveled in Indonesia where – he recalled in a speech in New York in 2010 – “despite my long hair, my earring and my obvious American appearance, I was welcomed throughout that country, in a way that is a reflection of the tremendous warmth of Islamic cultures and societies.” Brennan’s Feb. 13, 2010 address to a meeting at the Islamic Center at New York University, facilitated by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), provided an insight into his views on Islam, a faith which he said during the speech had “helped to shape my own world view.” Travels around the world over more than three decades had taught him about “the goodness and beauty of Islam,” said Brennan, whose 25-year career at the CIA until 2005 included a stint as station chief in Riyadh. From upthread:
The main serial killer villain appears to be a Hannibal Lector type i.e.. the super-genius serial killer caught and in prison but who has seeded/nurtured other serial killers- hence "the following". It's not going to be one serial killer per year, at least as I see the commercials. The idea is that there are several hidden killers in 'the following" who are hunting Kevin Bacon even as he hunts them. Revenge of the Chief Justice ...
In January of 2012 Mr. Noonan filed suit with 6 other electors in California to prevent the Secretary of State, Debra Bowen from placing Mr. Barack Obama on the California Primary Ballot. Mr. Noonan and the other petitioners claimed that Mr. Obama had not proved that he was a U.S. Citizen. The case was dismissed by Judge Micheal P. Look for his closest friend or brother or partner to be one early in the season, I betcha. 24 used to rely on the Tier 1/Tier 2 villains in every season. During the first 12 eps, you were introduced to the Tier 1 baddie and his plan, around eps 12-13, you were then shown the Tier 2 villain who was Tier 1 villain's boss and the real mastermind behind the bigger plan. And the American genocide continues, with 333,964 murders in 2011. That’s the figure proudly released by Planned Parenthood Federation of America in their report delineating how many abortions they performed in fiscal 2011. Doing some simple math reveals that the number of abortions performed equates to one abortion every 94 seconds. And Planned Parenthood can be pleased with their progress: the number of abortions they performed in 2011 was up from 2010, when they snuffed out 329,445 lives. And the U.S. government can carry the banner high with the abortion provider; Planned Parenthood received $542.4 million in “government health services grants and reimbursements,” including “payments from Medicaid managed care plans.” Posted by: USA at January 09, 2013 05:00 PM (RIg+t) 387

speaking of entertainment... Ah, DC inauguration. Strippers, escorts, dominatrices, and even sugar babies looking for sugar daddies are planning for a jam-packed — and potentially quite lucrative — weekend across the greater DC area. “Oh my God, it’s bananas,” says Baker, describing the interest he’s had so far. Hire Party Strippers does about double the business on inauguration weekend, during which he can boost rates about 25 percent. This means $650 to $700 for “two girl fantasy shows”; $350 for one girl; and $300 for one male stripper, though demand is never as high for men as women. “It’s going to be really, really busy,” Baker says. “We have a lot of people coming [to DC] from out of town, and they want to have adult entertainment in their rooms. I have to disagree... Obama, IMO, is all about breaking the Power of the United States, beacuse it Bullies the rest of the World (somthing he learned from his Mom, at a young age in Indonesia, then cemented with his Marxist Profs in College). To do so, three things have to happen.... He has to destroy the US Economy.... which he does by implementing overbearing regulation, and destroying any reason to save money (by having NO interest on savings, while having inflation)... He has to destroy the American Military... by overextending them, with limited resources, and putting in charge Politicaly Correct Officers who destroy the Traditions that make the US Military great (note, they just announced that there are no more US Navy Chief initiations...) And three? He has to break the Contract the US Citizen has with his Government, known as the Constitution.... The Gun thing is a shot at step three.... Janet Reno was one of the most evil, malevolent individuals I have ever seen in public life. For her complete subverting of the Attorney General's office for partisan ends, she should have spent the rest of her life in jail. And you're right, not a lot of people know that she first made her bones with those trumped up, phony child abuse cases back in the 80s. She escaped any kind of responsibility for those, too. Its about giving the Fed Government the power to limit, or even make you get a Permit, or pay money, to Excercise somthing given you by the Creator (or Nature). OregonMuse, does this excerpt from the Fijnje case sound like something from the Salem Witch trials? Perhaps it should be a new Crucible.
'On August 28, Metro-Dade police officer Mark Martinez arrested Fijnje, who suffers from juvenile diabetes. After several hours of grilling, Fijnje, woozy from hypoglycemia, told Martinez that his fingers "had slipped" mistakenly into a girl's vagina two or three times while he was wiping her in the bathroom. Fijnje would later testify in court that Martinez had promised to release him if he made the "confession." When it became clear that wasn't the case, Fijnje denied the claim. He was sent to Youth Hall. The arrest kicked up a squall of terror at Old Cutler, an affluent South Dade congregation. Parents who had once regarded Fijnje as the nursery school's best babysitter now began asking their children about his alleged abuse. Keeley served as a nerve center for worried parents, referring a growing number of children to private therapists. What began with Donna's murky comments, quickly mushroomed.' I'm probably a defective moronette or something because I'm not sure I want to see Timothy Olyphant's butt, even though I'm sure it's a fine butt. I know I'd sort of rather not see tits, and certainly don't want to see bottoms. Well, okay, maybe if it's just walking to the shower or something I wouldn't mind seeing Olyphant's butt, but I'd rather see the torso of Oliver on Arrow.

Heh. I know that many of those cases were based on testimony from court-appointed psychiatrists who "examined" the kids outside of any control or accountability. Why these travesties weren't summarily thrown out of court is beyond my understanding, except that no public official wants to be seen as being soft on child abuse. rockets. I think some do-gooder had them banned. Hell, there are probably a few still stranded on my grandmom's old house's roof decades later. Posted by: logprof at January 09, 2013 04:33 PM (StDOM) I had a 3-stage "Jupiter C" water rocket: first stage, second stage, and a spherical satellite. It worked great. As the pressure ran out in each stage, the next stage would be released, and rocket on ahead. Pretty sophisticated design for a toy. I also had a Mattel six-gun that used Greenie Stick-em Caps, and which propelled small plastic bullets with a spring. Guess that kind of dates me, doesn't it?
