Overnight Open Thread (1-8-2013) - Édition de échappatoire

Due to confluence of deadlines, random events, unscheduled meetings and a general sense of ennui tonight's ONT will be le dérisoire.

Henri-2-Paw-de-Deux

Quote of The Day

John Gray via Jonah G:

The same myth - a hollowed-out version of a religious belief in providence - underpins the abiding appeal of Communism. ...In its predominant forms, liberalism has been in recent times a version of the religion of humanity, and with rare exceptions - Russell is one of the few that come to mind - liberals have seen the Communist experiment as a hyperbolic expression of their own project of improvement; if the experiment failed, its casualties were incurred for the sake of a progressive cause. To think otherwise - to admit the possibility that the millions who were judged to be less than fully human suffered and died for nothing - would be to question the idea that history is a story of continuing human advance, which for liberals today is an article of faith. That is why, despite all evidence to the contrary, so many of them continue to deny Communism's clear affinities with Fascism.

18 The Fight For Equality

The battle for racial equality in the courts and on the ballot box is quickly reaching a climax. The fight to pass civil rights initiatives via the ballot box achieves yet another in a long string of victories this past November when Oklahoma, for the most part, outlawed Affirmative Action. The language used is similar to other Civil Rights Initiatives passed in other states previously. The key operative text for these measures makes it clear that it is meant to end discrimination”

“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.”

They had a "life clock" on their hands, and going to carousel was an opportunity to "renew" the life clock.

Never happened. Wasn't the prudent thing to do.

The late Richard Jordan was in "Logan's Run" too.

Funny, I was just watching an episode of Magnum, PI with special guest
star Jenny Agutter as an international jewel thief who falls for Magnum
and I was explaining to my wife how hot Ms. Agutter was in Logan's Run.
She did full frontal nudity, if my memory serves. When they're getting
changed into furs down in the ice caves where Box the robot harvests
fish and sea greens, plankton and protein from the sea!
I should watch that movie again.

I hated the first 5 minutes with a white-hot passion because they were fisting too much original-Holmes-updated into it but I decided to stick it out and it improved alot; and it continued through the rest of the episodes. (I later rationalized what they did because not everyone is knowledgeable about the original Holmes so they were doing it as character setting that I didn't need but a newcomer would.)

Strange but true. I was a fan of his as far back as the 70's when he had a daytime show. He was already slipping a bit with age, but then sucumbed to Bush Derangement Syndrome and fell into a chasm.

360 AP, Bannion, we had a guy work for our company briefly that was retired SpecFor. The stories were interesting.

During one training exercise, someone slapped a mosquito. Instructor made them find the mosquito (they were in a swamp) and bring it back to base, by hand. He then made them give the mosquito a full military burial. "The fucking thing killed an entire squad. You're damn right he deserves highest fucking honors." Had them outside in the middle of the night, digging the grave and then in dress uni's. Just as they get to sleep....BOOM....back into the barracks. "What direction was the mosquito facing when we buried him?" Made them dig it up and re-bury the mosquito.

I hardly ever go to Dayton anymore, the family is all gone from there and it is too depressing to see how run down the city has become. So I thought that Cassano's was gone, because the one's I use to hit had disappeared.

Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Yeah, the other story he liked to tell is that while they were out on runs, the instructor would bark out instructions that they were to follow without question. He'd yell to bring him the pine cone from that tree. Pointing way up in the top of some scrub tree. Random shit like that. Guy tells us one day they're running through a swampy area...."BRING ME THAT GATOR!!!" He said it was about an 8 ft gator a hundred yards away. "What did you do?" "We started hauling ass toward the gator." "And?" "He called us off about 20 yards from the thing." "What the hell would you have done if he hadn't?" "That was still being discussed as we got close."

Carson invented the form and nobody's ever done it as well, let along better. He had George Goble on as a guest one evening and over a period of a few minutes Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra happened to drop by for a visit.

Goble's comment? "I feel like the world is a tuxedo and I'm a pair of brown shoes.

Carson cared about his guests, no matter who they were, and it showed.

I was forced to open a safe at gunpoint on two occasions where I used to work. Surprisingly, bad guys don't let you call the police once they initiate the robbery. And cops don't burst in and save the day like in the movies. They cordon off the block and try to catch them as they flee. If someone wants to harm you, the best the police can manage is a chalk outline.

415 What the Leftist does not understand is that the core of their philosophy, the noble savage of Rousseau, is absolutely wrong. Civilization is not the default state of mankind, and we are not enlightened creatures when "liberated" from the traditions, customs, and history that they think hold us back

These things do not hold us back, they are the product of millennia of trial and error, mankind finding the things that work to keep society glued together so that we can overcome the darkness inherant in all of us, overcoming our very nature so that we can work together and advance. This is not axiomatic, but a fragile and tenuous thing never more than a catastrophe away from failure.

When you alter such structures so long established, you send shockwaves through the system. Our founding fathers understood this, saying in the Declaration that forms of governance long established should not be altered for light and transient causes.

A few changes every now and then, and we overcome the difficulty and find ways to make new ideas work. Equal justice before the law, liberty, the end of slavery, etc. None of those came easily, despite clearly being a desirable state, because the whole social order had to change to accommodate the new way of thinking.

You can think of it like replacing a building's structure one pillar at a time. This is possible in a well-designed building because the other pillars bear the weight while you install the new one.

Now imagine trying to replace every pillar at the same time. The building falls down because nothing bears the weight. That is what the Left is doing, because they believe they can replace our flawed, working society with a perfect, utopian one. And they believe they can do it all *right now*. Not only is the method flawed, but so are all the replacement pillars.

Where is this leading? History tells us that this endeavor, often attempted, is doomed to the same failure of such previous radical experiments. I think Leslie Fish put it best:
"Life's crown passes to younger lands, Time sweeps dust of Hope from his hands, and turns another page."

461 Was at the range/gunshop for my birthday last Saturday with a bag of pistols, my wife, mother and stepfather. Mainly to see what my wife and mother could handle for some late Christmas presents and to do some birthday shooting. Bought myself a CZ-75BD and surprisingly they still had a load of semi-autos on the shelves at fairly normal prices.

Anyhow, in the lane next to me was a woman in her mid 30s or so who was there by herself. She started with a pistol of some sort (wasn't paying that much attention as to what at the time) and fired trough a box or two. Then all of a sudden BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM... she was unloading slugs with a pump 20 gauge about as fast as she could cycle the action and fire. First group at about 20 feet was a all over the place. But by her 4th box of shells she was shooting fairly nice groups. My wife and mother watched her with their mouths open except when they whispered to each other.

She was a bit plain, but right then and there she could have gave cake girl a run for her money.

Better idea: get an interview with him and grill him on the bills coming up, the issues, and make up a few bill numbers. See if he attempts a response.

Fame now, even from absurdity, lends the brazen far too much credit. He only has to rely upon staffers to not look like a complete turd. He won't get much farther than he has already. There's no point.

Clown made Good™. Fade black. Roll credits.

Better to focus on other more 'dangerous' Dems. Imagine if we had focused our attention on a certain unknown break-out speaker at the Democratic Convention in 2004.

I am having one of the Kittens, Cecil keep her company. They seem happy and comfy in the Tackroom and fat as pigs.
Uncle Horse has a new roomate, and is happy and well now! My Clients brought in their mares from the mountains for the winter. So its been busy out here. I think my friend who went Missing May have sent me a message on New Years Eve to let me know hes alive if not ok. So thats less on my mind. All in all its been busy. But i sure wish the coyote that took up residence nearby would leave my barn cats alone. This one survived by some miracle, but its been scary to me. Im very glad shes better. Praying works

I finally got the sick feral cat to poop so now im good on that account. YAY ME!!!! But it was a rotten stressful weekend while she figured out if she would just chill and use the catbox. Adding little Cecil in with her made all the difference. She was lonely. Giving her a little buddy to show him how its done and give her someone to snuggle was the secret. Hubby has always been allergic to cats, so I couldn't have them in the house. This last one has crept in, and he loves her (takes medicine). Now she hardly ever goes out, except in the middle of the night, when she gently scratches my head, silently! It's hilarious! Then she lets me pick her up and put her out. For about 2 hours. SPOILED!

I have the back bedroom set up as an office. And yes, I dress up like I would if I were at work. Best of all, I have two office kittehs! It's the reason I keep working there because the pay still sucks. When I do drive in to work, I get to sit at a desk and I don't talk to my co-workers any more than I do when I'm at home.

Good luck to the job hunters! Being unemployed sucks. Oh, and I have an internet friend that has invited me out to the shooting range he belongs to. It has a place to shoot shotguns, which means I can practice with my husband's gun. And he's also going to bring some handguns for me to try, as I'd like to pick up a decent handgun.

I never thought of it at the time, or of any SciFi I watched, but there are plot elements in all of them that are a direct consequence of progressive policy. All of them dystopian, dire and/or deadly.

Turning on a water faucet and seeing nothing come out will be like getting hit in the head with a 2x4.

Quite a few have never experienced gas rationing. When that happens again, and it will, it'll be a major wake-up call.

Not saying it won't happen again but I don't see it in the near future with all the energy production ramping up in the US....at least an OPEC boycott should be a thing of the past.

One would hope so.Maybe some will. But, I suspect with many, they'll just get more deranged.

No water? Evil corporate plot... or something. Probably Haliburton.
Fuel rationing? Evil corporate plot... or something. Probably Haliburton. Or, some nefarious Bush oil cabal.
Everthing is always the fault of reactionaries trying to sabotage the worker's paradise. Or, something.

Currently I'm in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. They cut the water for 24 hours 4 days a week. You'd be surprised at the ways people find water. The most popular is drilling a well. 2nd is finding free taps of water spread throughout the city. Manly at gas stations, public gardens, and private buildings.

Probably one of the most stupid 'science-fiction' movies ever is Silent Running. Its a green screed against evil pollution. Joan Baez provided music for it. Bruce Dern slips a cog when his ship is ordered to destroy the eco-domes and return to Earth. So he murders his crewmates to save the trees. http://youtu.be/TckJBvl_uT0

Funny, i do remember being more concerned about their well-being than Bruce Dern.

Although i wouldn't mind being trapped with his circa 1992 daughter.

630 I wonder if we just showed the proto-apes from 2001 to the average OWS with their trust fund cocoon. Would they make the connection to how slim the margin is between them and the likes of Moonwatcher?

Idedog, the robots were given cute non-threatening names. And besides they cheated at cards. So they had more character depth than Bruce Dern.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at January 09, 2013 05:22 AM (AgRBF)

632 Gee Camile Paglia. Comparing Bowman neutralizing HAL to a rape. Thinking with your lady parts too much there?

I am not going to argue that about Beavis because I have seen too many who only care for their cellphones so they can just emote their latest frustration. Or go into a movie theatre and while I cringe, they gush over it.

Gonna have to stick up for SR here, it's a good SF movie, despite it's crappy Baez songs and hippy tone. The 3robots were the stars of the movie no doubt and were done very well. Dern was efeffective, in a way that that the that they may not haveintended. Dern does psycho well. With SR, back when I first saw it, I got the impression that Dern's character wasn't much of a good guy. Quite the opposite. He meant well, but was an asshole.

There are scenes early on with the other 3 crewmembers where he comes across as an arrogant prick and deserves the mocking he receives from them. They're right. He murders all 3, even the guy who sticks up for him somewhat. There's one bit at the end, when he blows up the 2nd robot, with himself. because he's damaged. There was no need to do that. He could have left the robot with the other one in the dome. Dern's character doesn't have any empathy whatsoever and it shows.

He's a fanatic that is quick to kill. There may be a lofty enviro message in the film, but it doesn't come across as an appealing one. Dern's a tantrum throwingl dick, worse, he's a homicidal dick. They might have been going for a pro-militant angle with the film, but they don't do a very good job of selling it. In no small part, due to Dern.

640 Oh!

I Doooo, Declaearhh!

This is about the most *arguably* racist movie that might have ever been filmed!!!

(If you count fake accents, insulting, innflamatory, unbeleivable, dialogue; poorly realized Comedic Stereotypes as characters ?....)

You might just take "The Great Meadow" for a Spike Lee Joint...

If you were political, and had time travel, and wanted to make an incredibly shitty, racist movie, in the '30s.

(It really is an awful movie!)

You might be Spike Lee...

And never even *reference*, black folk, much less call them nigg-rs

That's the term those Southern Democrats from long ago used for our ancestors, that's the same usage that LBJ from Texas used to wage war on "our people"...

That is your replacement.

Jesus, black folk!

Lyndon Baines Johnson & the Welfare State!

We gave up all our Fathers and all of our Saints & Sons on the altar of THIS fat, weenie wagging, PRESIDENT!?

All hail LBJ!!!

Fuck You! Obama!!

I'm gonna give credit where credit is due!

Posted by: Icedog at January 09, 2013 07:02 AM

Yeah, it is a depressing film. And the hippy overtones can be grating at times, but it has Trumbull's early work and it's actually a compelling story. I guess it depends how you take it. Dern is actually very good in it. He does asshole to a T. It's not that different to his performance in Hang Em High, just not as obvious and villainy. If it's any indication, I've found that some envirotards have mixed feelings about the film, due to Dern's role and characterization.

647 to question the idea that history is a story of continuing human advance, which for liberals today is an article of faith

Libes just don't understand you have to continually fight for the future-- it isn't axiomatic that tomorrow will be better than today. And we need to get actresses to wear more costumes like that one too. In the present.

648 Otho the well biggest science problem with Silent Running is. For ships loaded with Earth's last forests are sent to Saturn. Yes Saturn where the sunlight is far dimmer than what those plants need. The reason why Saturn was chosen, Trumbull coming off 2001 said he could do the rings of Saturn.

And let us not dwell on the last bio-dome adrift in space and its artificial lights being powered by who knows what since Dern blows up Valley Forge. Sorry but this movie for multiple reasons is on my 10 Worst list.
