Andrew Klavan: The Historical Case Against Conservative Despair

Nice thought.

One of the central weaknesses of radicalism is that radicals seem to lose track of the causes and foundations of the things even they value. They don’t understand that peace is always and everywhere the end result of superior firepower, improved health the result of greater wealth, wealth the result of hardheaded and often greedy business dealing, and liberty deeply linked to a specific concept of man’s relationship to God. They never consider that it may at least be questionable whether the cornerstone can be removed without the structure toppling over.

Conversely, one of the central weaknesses of conservatism is that conservatives see all too clearly how every good thing we have is linked to everything else. They can trace in a moment how any change in the system might lead to disaster. Expand the definition of marriage and civilization falls. Raise taxes and end up in chains. Allow women to vote and government will become an all-embracing over-protective mother state infantilizing the population. Okay, maybe that last one’s true, but you see what I’m getting at.

...

Things, in other words, are almost as bad as they always are.

But while there are cycles and phases in history — and while everything made by mortals surely dies — modernity has shown itself full of unique moments and last minute rescues. I think of New York City before Giuliani; America before Reagan. Things can look pretty damn dark before the sun comes over the hill.

If it's down to nature, we will see the storm again.

The optimist sees it as up to us... I just don't know. Won't know until it's over, I guess.

A lot of people have been quietly getting fed up, though. If we can resurrect Breitbart's principles, maybe we can get a loud enough online loudspeaker to make them aware of what the MFM has been doing - at least get people questioning what they're told.

As much as I like Klavan, I'm with steevy on this one. I see America as having morphed into something from which she will not readily recover. Call it demographics. Call it an acutely dumbed down citizenry. Call it complete infiltration into major pillars of society by communist/leftist radicals. Call it whatever. November 6, 2012 showed me that Americans don't have a clue where we are headed or what they are forfeiting to a centralized gov't. Look at the internet....awash in such gross stupidity and brainwashed bots, buying into practically everything spewed out of TFG's mouth or his media sycophants. So ignorant. Here's my gun...take it! 18 I disagree.

This time really is different because of the emergence of the new Left.

The old Left, which was dominant before Reagan, was not the totalitarian beast we now face.

Preciously because the Left now embraces leftwing social policy, if not constrained it will eventually run into the same carnage that its peers in Europe and Asia ran into, baring something to stop it.

And let's be clear, there is nothing to stop it. The Republican party is a shell, and the left now controls almost every social institution.

Things are bad, worse then they have ever been in America...and it will continue to get worse.

I haven't been there since Giuliani left, so I can't speak to what it is like now, but between the prosperity of the country in the late 80's and 90's and the early part of the 00's and a good mayor, it was much better then. 35 None of the griping means it's impossible to win. Just the hill seems to increase in size according to any progress we make.

We have a *massive* job to do and we haven't been able to get past infighting and crappy-ass leadership.

Pretty much need to gut the GOP and really *really* open up the selection process.

And yes, that means people need to be involved in their local committees and shit.

But because of the nature of people, we need to *drag* people into those processes that are willing, not expect *conservatives* whose primary drive is their own lives and families to spend all their time pursuing those goals.

We basically need community organizers.

85 "Things can look pretty damn dark before the sun comes over the hill."

And sometimes dusk settles on the hill, the inhabitants crushed by the darkness and no chance to face the next sunrise. So, yeah, good and bad cycles; sometimes for a few and sometimes for the many. This is not insight.

Insight would be explaining why humans must destroy the good cycles every. single. time. And then having a formula to break that cycle.

126 Reagan etc. are simply blips on a graph of a progressive onslaught in America.

I don't care about the gay marriage issue, but others see America turning from the Biblical principles that founded the country. As the blurb stated without God government is god and men's liberty is surrendered.

I do care about abortion as I believe innocent human life is to be protected, and a pregnant woman is carrying a human child at conception.

16 trillion dollars in debt is something the country has never faced before. This is astounding considering the debt of WWII.

So I do think things are as dire as conservatives think today.

And without even coherent suggestions about what to do.

People are stressed out. The perception is that the "leadership" is rejecting us and our input is ignored, and it's not an unserious observation.

And most people would like to do more to help but have seen their efforts squandered.

The GOP needs to reach out to its base and take the results seriously or we'll end up in a messy struggle to replace it.

The kittens have been helping, and my clients who brought in two new horses, but its made me busy as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.

You, like the other despondent Morons here, will persevere. Occasionally we have to have a thread where we can vent, I think this may be one of them. The shit's getting heavy, but once we regain our bearings, we'll start formulating a cohesive plan. I can think of quite a few Things That Must Be Done, but this isn't the place to discuss them.

The time is approaching for Good to fight Evil, and I do mean that in the Biblical sense. There are far too many occurences that have been foretold for me to think otherwise. I have no idea what my, or anyone else's role will be until the time comes, but I have faith that the Good will prevail. I'm certain it will be quite ugly, uglier than today. We must steel ourselves, trust each other, and have Faith.

We are being tested.

Anyway, it's good to hear from you. We need all the Morons we can find.

182 The Left says -- Oh, really? The govt has tanks and jets and laser guided weapons. Are you gonna fight them with a few rifles?

I'm going from memory but I think it may have been Solzheneytsin (sic?) who wrote that resistance, as in taking out a couple of secret policemen when they came for you in the middle of the night...making them afraid that they might no go home that night, would have been a powerful deterrent to the tyranny that the State visited on its people. Something to that effect.

I guess the trick is to know when to resist. Waiting until you're on the train to the gulag or to Auschwitz is too late.

Because it was never about crime, it was about Power and Control.

Or, as the NRA says, "It's not about guns, it's about control."

For the most part, crime happens to "little people" and not politicians with bodyguards, so that's not why they do things.

188 I need to replace my A/C and I need to have my old house rewired. The
quote I have for the A/C job already mentioned upping the fuse from 20
-> 30.
But I was wondering ... Is there any value to having the house rewired and then (specifically) swapping out the A/C?

A new 2.5 ton compressor should be OK on a 20A wiring. Some of the old inefficient ones in that capacity range would draw over 20A. The one I helped a neighbor with recently was drawing under 8A.

If part of the rewiring job is replacing/upgrading the old A/C wiring out to the point of the outside compressor disconnect, then deferring an A/C change isn't a big deal.

The electrician doing it can easily organize the work so that the old A/C unit is only down for an hour or two.

214 Also, if you plan on getting a beefier A/C unit, do some research on what you'd like to get and get the name plate specs for the outside compressor unit.

They'll usually say something like "use breaker in 25-40A range" or something like that. IMO, it pays to upsize the compressor wiring one size beyond whatever the electric code minimums calculate out to. If its a really long run of wire from panel to the compressor, maybe even two sizes to reduce voltage drop.

Here in FL almost every residential A/C I've ever seen was wired to bare minimums, and that results in a lot of voltage drop at the compressor, as well as wasting a lot of power just heating skinny minimal wire. Fatten up the wire, and you'll get that back in performance and probably never need a "start kit".

Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood, whoa yeah
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')

She's the kind of girl who's not too shy
And I can tell I'm her kind of guy
She danced close to me like I hoped she would
(she danced with me like I hoped she would)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')

We only danced for a minute or two
But then she stuck close to me the whole night through
Can I be fallin' in love
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of

I walked her home and she held my hand
I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin', ahhh)

I walked her home and she held my hand
I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, oh yeah, something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, something good, something good

I tend to agree with Klaven and I'm know for my negativity. Look the Republicans have more state legislatures than in a long time. It's the result of the tea party moment. It will take time for those people to move into national politics, but it will happen. The question is will the national as a whole be too far gone by then?

258 An Arab Spring thought. The Left often mocks the 2nd amendment people who say the 2nd amendment is there to protect us from a tyrannical govt. The Left says -- Oh, really? The govt has tanks and jets and laser guided weapons. Are you gonna fight them with a few rifles? But isn't that exactly what happened in Libya and now Syria?

It's even worse for them, since in those places, not to mention Iraq and Afghanistan, we're often dealing with barely literate populations. An insurgency in a modern first world country with access to advanced manufacturing equipment and a significant knowledge base would be an absolute nightmare for any military.

275 Nice pep talk but it doesn't hold up against the Left's long game.

Reagan undid much of the damage wrought in the 70s but had to treat everything done by FDR as normal and never to be undone. Some stupid policies that came into being under Clinton have likewise become the new normal. The next genuinely conservative President, should there ever be one, will be able to call it a massive accomplishment just to undo a fraction of what Obama has already done, never mind what the next four years portends.

We take a few inches here and there but only after the left pushes forward by yards. Eventually, something has to break in a big way.

Think unguarded comms/power/transport/fuel infrastructure.

Its impossible to guard every critical item of infrastructure in a modern society.

When I was in college one of the guys in the dorm stole the light bar off one of the campus security cars. Every time he saw them go do a floor walk through a dorm, he knew he had 10 minutes and would go out with his wrench and take one turn on the bolts holding it down.

After about a month of that, it was hanging by a thread, and was gone in a wink.

The moral of that story is -- don't get greedy. Be patient.

I read this article a little before coming here. I thought he made some valid points. I remember watching a documentary a long time ago about marijuana farmers in Georgia. Farmers there were growing pot because, as one farmer said,"It's the only crop wherea farmer sets his own price." The sheriff was doing his best to arrest all of them, but then he didn't get re-elected. The people finally had enough. The former sheriff told the interviewer that "You can only police people as much as they want to be policed."

Yes I knew where you were going but just had to make the joke. The other part of infrastructure is you can suck them into guarding one thing to attack another. Split their resources and keep them spinning and the best way to do that is freak the population with fake crap on the internet so they have to shut down their own communication.

340 I must admit I often despair. Naturally, pessimistic and nowadays with much reason to be.

The problem may be not that we despair but that many others -- those low information voters and independents don't despair---yet.

Events will have to do that for it is clear we don't have the megaphone or the leaders who'd even know how to use it to educate and motivate people. Even then it would be hard to overcome a lifetime of indoctrination.

We can be hopeful in two senses. If I learned anything from history it is that people like Obama overreach. Always. It seems he is about to do so now.

Second, the Obama's of history are subject to its vicissitudes as we all are.

The American people didn't rid themselves of Carter. The Soviets did it for them.

Let's pray Obama has similar bad luck while sparing us as much as possible.

Lastly, we, must realize this is not a shooting type of war even if those on the extremes of both sides think so. It can never be. Then we overreach. It is a propaganda war. We're not fighting it.

At some very, very early point, attacking a population to punish a government fails horribly.

Unless they're Muslims, because that shit seems to work endlessly in the ME and North Africa, for some crazy reason.

But realistically, we need to first is political and communication and education and everything... and if it comes down to them initiating force, you can't attack infrastructure you need, you simply remove their ability to enforce illegal and unconstitutional edicts.

343 Be angry. Attack. Let the bastards know we will not quit. Despair is not something we need. We need conviction, determination, and grit. We do not worship the gov't or Oblabo or the environment or diversity or any of the false gods the left would cast of gold. We recognize only one God, our rights come from Him and He does not dress like a liberal. We will never bow before the leftists who would subjugate us for their own advancement. We will not bow before their false gods. We will not go quietly. We will fight, we will attack, and we will win.

344 Sefton.

Do not despair. Despair is failing to have faith in the Lord. We are passing through terrible times. Do not lose faith. Be the best you can be. Live your faith. Do not despair.

346 I am pretty sure drones fly too high for you hear or see them, never mind shoot down with an M1903. What is their critical vulnerability? Classic center of gravity (COG) analysis.

Posted by: butch at January 08, 2013 10:30 PM (nK2Sx)

347 346 Butch,

I have I have found a chronic weakness for your nick.

Yes a 1903 cannot get it at operational altitude, that said there are windows of vulnerability and if man builds it man can wreck it given enough time and motivation.

Posted by: sven10077 at January 08, 2013 10:34 PM (LRFds)

Yes.

I've seen too many folks on the right, in gun threads, usually, who like to sound authoritarian about how vastly superior the US military is, so we should, like, just give up the guns or something. I never really understand their point.

Often these same sorts of bozos are the ones who like to laugh at how the Russians were taken to the woodshed by a few Afghanis armed with highly inferior weapons.

The point is, be armed. Stay armed. Stay populous. Stay active.

But it is also different because of new media. The left no longer completely controls the information.

350 I am preparing. I think a lot of us are. Maybe we have lived in the eye of the storm too lonh, maybe it passes soon maybe it doesn't. I was angry at first because its just such obvious bullshit we're being fed, then I was angry that so many people fell for that obvious bullshit. How can so many betray us, betray our ancestors like that? But you know what? 49% get it, its really a small percentage of true believers in this socialist bullshit. A huge number of the other 51% will be forced to "get it" through hardship.

Most of their leaders are self absorbed pricks, and aging boomers. Their shit doesnt work. Reality bites them in the ass eventually. The more time goes on, the more that becomes clear. In a lot of ways we have time on our side. Not against the immediate damage, it will get deeper. We get the values right though, and most of us DO have that right, and we win the long fight. Mostly I dont want to give the pricks the satisfaction of thinking I will give in, or that they have WON anything important, or in having a moments peace. I will dedicate myself to making them miserable and surviving this bullshit with my values intact. Fuck em. You know what creates good values? Surviving hardship! Time is NOT on their side. Im fairly old. How many times have we been told over the years our kids couldnt fight, and couldnt stand up when they needed to? Have they? You bet your ass they have. The next generation CAN stand up. Its time we lead, and bury the metrosexual self absorbed boomer pricks in the way.

351 How much of its own water, power, and food does NYC produce? Chicago? Detroit? DC? PurpAv has the right idea.

Sorry Merovign, the major cities are infested with FSA types and the new would-be mandarin class. We don't have time to recover the media and the schools. It took them decades to seize them.

War is coming. War to the knife, knife to the hilt.

352 Sven @ 357 - Oh, absolutely, where there is a will there is a way. What are the weak links? When and where are the drones vulnerable?

Posted by: butch at January 08, 2013 11:06 PM (nK2Sx)

353 352 butch,

I'd hit it during the ramp phase, the craft though not vulnerable to the human element on a biological scale with regards to Gs on take off is limited by its powerplant so the take offs are likely not exactly Mariner one Mars Shot impersonations.

The command and control is reliant on EW vulnerable bursts.

We'll likely have people sympathetic to our cause in the Mil complex to aid efforts at sabotage.

The drone removal problem is a big one because it opens up RealTime OpTempo for the opfor.

358 Do Klavan's friends call him "Pollyanna" as his nickname?

He ought to join the hillbuzz guy and Dick Morris for a drink, they'd have a lot in common.

Read today that the Republicans are pushing for a consumption tax? Why? What happened to all the flat tax people?

More and more people are playing the lottery. You'd think it would dawn on them to capitalize on that methodology to help bring down the debt.

Not my words, but my brother’s, after having read Klavan’s commentary:

i did not feel so bad when clinton got elected,

and did not feel so bad when obama got elected the first time.

but the second time…

i agree with the author when he say, “things, in other words, are almost as bad as they always are.”

actually, i’m glad we aren’t expecting a mongol or viking invasion, or anything THAT bad.

but it is hard to say what “rolling the sun up the hill” is really supposed to mean.

work harder?

become politically active?

buy guns and ammo whenever i can find them on sale?

a lot of people are probably thinking “what can i really do about any of this?”

one thing i don’t like is the idea

that conservatives need to “change” if they want to have a stake in future american politics.

the way a person votes is SUPPOSED to be about PRINCIPLES.

i think it is ok to compromise on things that do not matter, and perhaps politicians should do more of that.

but if it means conservatives are supposed to become like liberals,

just to woo a lot of bleeding hearts who can’t tell an underdog from an under-handed dog,

then why should i be happy if a conservative wins if he might just as well have been a liberal?

it think i learned last election to be happy with the way i voted,

even if everyone else in america voted against me.

Merovign is spot on. It's not impossible, just a daunting task. If you skim over our country's history, you'll see that we've had a lot of dark, perilous moments and through the exertions of a small group of determined folks, we made it over the hill, if even just barely. Despair is easy but not helpful. We start one small bite at a time, our personal sphere of influence and move out from there. To paraphrase Zapata, it's better to die fighting, standing on your two feet than to continue living on your knees. Either way, we gotta get through tough times, it comes to how we're going to get through it. My cent and half. Y'all rock.

There are only so many fingers one may stick into the dike before the dike is breached.

And the first one to be washed away? the one trying to prevent the breach.

The upside: it is also the only game in town, as the flood waters will eventually reach everyone. Better to try and shape your destiny than to allow it to be shaped for you.
