4Chan Pranks, #cutting4Bieber and #rememberAddison, Make the News
This is actually news, if you can believe it. I had written this, then thought better of it, and decided not to publish it, until I saw it was on Drudge.
The hashtag #Cut4Bieber began trending, suggesting that dedicated Beliebers engage in self-harm through cutting themselves in order to get Justin's attention in response to his recent alleged bad boy behavior. "Lets start a cut yourself for bieber campaign," an anonymous user initially wrote before the thread was deleted, according to Billboard. "Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because bieber was smoking weed. See if we can get some little girls to cut themselves."Justin Bieber apparently got caught smoking weed, so 4chan created an astroturf prank wherein they claimed that girls were cutting themselves (CONTENT WARNING)in order to convince Bieber that weed is bad. The content warning is for imagery of cuts on girls' arms. Some of these pictures may be fake, but others, I'm guessing, are just lifted off the internet, and are thus real cutting pictures, but falsely claimed to be part of this #cutting4Bieber hoax. I believe this one is transparently fake, though, so a lesser content warning on this one. As a follow-up hoax, they then conspired to claim that their rivals "9gag" had actually started the hoax, and shame on them, because, they further claimed, an impressionable young girl had in fact attempted to cut herself in order to encourage Bieber to stop smoking so much weed, and had died as a result of this. None of this is true, you understand: They're continuing to make things up. But they started a hashtag #rememberAddison (Addison supposedly being this Biebercidal girl's name) and a whole faked-up internet trail to give her existence credibility, like a YouTube channel and MySpace page and her "brother" starting a "Remember Addison" facebook page and so on. I wasn't going to post this because it wound up occasioning Too Much Thinking about what is funny, and what other people find funny. I find it darkly funny, rather than cruel, but only because I make the following assumptions: 1) They weren't really serious about trying to get girls to cut4Bieber. 2) The idea of someone actually cutting4Bieber is so outlandish, so absurd, and so unlikely to actually happen, that it seems harmless. 3) The actual object of the joke -- that is, the person you laugh at the end -- isn't girls who love Bieber (well, secondarily, maybe) but rather people generally, and their willingness to believe all sorts of things. If you don't share those assumptions, then this will seem more sinister. On 3, I thought about that some, and thought about the media and the public being part of an unwitting symbiotic relationship on things like this: The public wants to be distracted, and the media wants to write easy, distracting pieces. I suppose I'm okay with all of this just because I don't think there was (much) evil intent beyond poking fun at people for being so gullible, and because I think it's unlikely someone would start cutting4Bieber just to let him know "Weed is bad 4 you," as one fake tweet explained. Some girls cut themselves, but... I doubt they cut themselves because they saw it on Twitter, or to let Justin Bieber know about the long-term consequences of marijuana use. On the other hand, anyone with daughters, I imagine, will feel very protective about them, and will see very little humor in this. See? That's why I didn't publish it. Because opinions will sharply vary depending on one's own situation and point-of-view, and it's hard to say that someone who feels a natural protectiveness about young girls is "just wrong!!!!" and should "lighten up!!!" I can't say that -- they're not "wrong." They just have a different background and situation which causes them, naturally, to react differently to the same stimulus. And that's why I wasn't going to post. But it's on Drudge, so it's news, and I've now spent 30 minutes writing this crap, so I guess I have to publish it. Thanks to @slublog.

(FWIW, what's mostly driving the decision is a long tiredness of the constant heckling and speech chilling that goes in that culture against anything that upsets their strange worldview. Sometimes I do that with things that I'm not certain are true but which seem too interesting not to post. (I almost always wind up slightly embarrassed when I do this, as commenters immediately demonstrate to me how completely false the thing is.)
But for the media generally, they actually have a strong incentive to push out the nonsense, get the hits, and then write a tiny correction the next day.

1. Appear on the "scene"
2. Make a movie/cut a record/find fame

5. Pulled over by LAPD/NYPD for DUI/DWI multiple times
6. Video of them using drugs
7. Sex tape finds its way to the internet
8. Celeb goes to rehab multiple times
9. Female celeb has child/children out of wedlock
10. Multiple visits by law enforcement for domestic abuse
11. Entertainment "career" goes down the tubes doe to above behavior
12. Problems with the IRS
13. Celeb ends up on slab at Coroner's office

But Alex Jones couldn't deal with this statistic. Here is where you pounce. So, Piers, is your argument that more access to guns leads to more murders?
And then you bring in the elephant in the room of switzerland, 3rd highest gun ownership per capital in the WORLD and inquire about the murder rate.
So, it's not the access or prevalence to guns that cause murder, nor is it even the scary "assault" nature since a lot of swiss guns are the evil "weapons of war".

I teach at the univ of co (at colorado springs).
We get all the students who attend UC Boulder for about 2 years then they realize they're not learning anything other than how to load a bong. We call it "Little Berkeley."
Not going to say what I teach but let's just say it's science/eng/math centered. We get more refugees from Boulder than you can imagine. Honestly? If I was hiring in the field(s) I'm qualified to work in and got a resume with UC Boulder it goes in the trash outright.

I'm not so sure about your premise #1. As it turns out, 4Chan is full of sick anarchist leaning fucks who tend to love to cause as much commotion and pain as possible.
They thing being anonymous gives them the power to do this, and they get a kick out if.
So yeah, if #1 isn't true (i.e. if they did intend to get at least one person to buy into it) then it is cruel.
I suspect that part 2 of scam only began when the "media" picked it up first (and since being caught as a farce would happen eventually they jumped tracks and decided to further troll the media rather than keep trying to troll (pre-)teen girls.

Either we learn then ad cut spending, or more likely, we try to tax or inflate out way out of it. With either high taxes or high inflation, we have extreme economic turmoil. It will happen eventually. Hopefully, it will be about that time we learn better, but if not, there is always lawlessness, rioting and perhaps foreign invasion to look forward to. I live in Texas, i keep telling people that they if they think illegal immigration and people moving here from blue states isn't affecting our politics they're whistling past the graveyard. All the major cities in Texas were solid R in the 80's, now they're all solid D. Just like in states like Pennsylvania it doesn't matter how conservative the rest of the state is, if the major cities vote D eventually it'll be too much for the rural R population to overcome.

People who already know the news is full of bullshit will continue knowing it. People who want to look smart and skeptical will say "See, the news is full of bullshit" then go on believing the rest of the news. Reporters will continue lying and being lied through freely and smugly. And people who can't believe the news is all bullshit, because in some way it's their friend, they'll find a way to get mad at whoever had the idea for the prank.

As far as item one, they weren't just flirting with stand alone complex*, they were feeling her up and slipping her the tongue. The danger was real and could have easily gotten out of control.
