Happy Tuesday.

An Omaha, Nebraska Wendy's franchise is cutting its non-management employees back to 28 hours per week in response to Obamacare's mandate that it pay for health insurance for employees who work at least 32 hours. The owner says he can't afford to pay for the insurance.

Chuck Hagel now says he has "unequivocal, total support for Israel." Maybe the "Jewish lobby" finally got to him. /sarc

I guess this is the type of thing we should want from Hagel now. He's going to be confirmed (look no further than the conspicuous silence coming from AIPAC and Israel for confirmation of that) after he appears for hearings and the Democrats make a big production about saying they're satisfied with his answers. All that's left to do in the meantime is to get some public admissions from Hagel and try not to let Obama use the distraction to score other points.

Democratic commentators are now laying the groundwork for the platinum coin trick. In the past week, econ writers for the NYTimes, WaPo, and now Bloomberg News have been chattering about how its such a great idea and won't do anything bad to inflation or the markets. Uh huh. Jim Pethokoukis has more on the coin trick.

2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 08, 2013. On this day in 1964 LBJ announced his “war on poverty”. Recall just a few days ago on TDIH he announced his “Great Society” in 1965. These were pivotal years in advancing socialism in the US. In 1964 the Dems had 65 in the Senate and 258 in the House. In 1965 they had 69 in the Senate and 295 in the House. In short, they had a firm grip all houses of the government and the Republicans had no say at all, not even the ability to filibuster any of this shit. And this was the start of the final downfall of the US. This is also why the MFM hates “gridlock” so much. They remember their glory days when they were all powerful. And please note, this was not the “baby boomers”.

So here we go

reveille; reveille (bangs trashcan with baton)

reveille; reveille (bangs trashcan with baton some more)

Heave out and trice up... Smoking lamp is lighted in all authorized smoking areas.

Rise and shine, morning glories... Up and at' em.

Drop your cocks and grab your socks... Move it ladies. AOS is being served...

3 Left out part of the rant

These two years set events in motion that corrupted the US, both in morals, and in desire to work and be productive. And so LBJ raised forth his staff and cried Lo, let the Free Shit Army be born and may they be fruitful and multiply…. regardless of married status….. and vote. And his sycophants in Congress said yea verily, so let it be written, so let it be done!

8 Only in the land of fruit and nuts could Romano-British tales come alive once again. A rape conviction was overturned because the “victim” was not married. The case hinged on an “Uther Pendragon” act of having sex with the woman via trickery in the dark pretending to be her boyfriend (no mention if her name was Igraine). He was convicted of rape but appealed. I suspect even though the jury bought the woman’s story the appeals court did not. After all Merlin has not been around for nearly 2000 years. A quirk in old CA law allows rape if the woman is not married. Hah, first I have heard of that and I used to live there.

But the Democrats have controlled it for almost 100 years. How can it not be?

Not saying I want it to burn, just that the level of economic awareness seems to be increasing on a daily basis.

59 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. As always, it’s much appreciated. Just living through all of the misery TFG and his cabal have created has got me ready to take the gas pipe. I don’t know how you two do it.

Today’s story concerns the director King Vidor.* Originally from Galveston, Texas, he found himself in California by 1916, making pictures with his wife Florence (who was later a minor star in her own right). He joined Louis B. Mayer’s young Metro studio and was folded in when the studio merged into the great MGM.

His first big success with the new studio was the war film The Big Parade. It established John Gilbert as a star and turned Vidor from working man’s director to studio asset, and he was promptly picked to helm a number of top MGM films, including The Champ with Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper and Lillian Gish’s La Bohème.

In 1928 came his second masterpiece – The Crowd. It’s the story of John and Mary; as Vidor himself put it, “the average fellow. . .sees quite a lot of drama taking place around him.” They are an ordinary couple in New York City. They have a child. They lose the child. They fight and their lives spiral down. But they rally at the end, have another child and life goes on.

For Mary, Vidor picked his second wife, Eleanor Bordman. But for John, he wanted a complete unknown. The Crowd is about ordinary people, like those in the movie audience; a star face for John would upset the whole equation.

One day on the crowded lot, someone pushed past Vidor, who looked up and knew in an instant that this was the man he wanted. Vidor lost him in the crowd – which, as we’ll see, was ironic – but learned the man was an extra named James Murray. When Vidor approached him with one of the oldest lines in Hollywood: “I’m a director, and I’ve got a part for you in my next picture,” – Murray turned sour and suspicious. Sure, he’d test, he told the Vidor, but only if he was given bus fare to get to the studio.

Murray was perfect, as Vidor guessed. Watch the movie (on Netflix or TCM) and I defy you to take your eyes off him. He is, in turns, strong, vulnerable and natural; it is his performance that holds the film together. But after The Crowd, Murray vanished. Vidor expected this; one of the reasons the actor had remained an extra was that he was an alcoholic. Still, the director didn’t forget him and, in 1934, when he was casting for the film Our Daily Bread, he was determined to find Murray; in his mind, the lead in Bread was The Crowd’s John a few years later.

He found Murray at last, a panhandler begging for lunch money. Vidor bought him a drink and offered him the new part. But this was the depths of the Depression; Murray, like so many, had lost heart. His hope had turned rancid.

“Just because I stop you on the street and try to borrow a buck, you think you can tell me what to do,” Murray spat. “As far as I’m concerned, you know what you can do with your lousy part.” And he melted back into the crowd passing by. In 1936, his body was found floating in the Hudson River.

Vidor never forgot Murray. At the end of his life, he regretted only that there were two movies he wanted to make that he never could; one about the 1922 murder of director William Desmond Taylor, and one about the life of James Murray.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

60 Well, you will all be glad to know that the traditions of independent investigtive journalism, journalistic integrity, and the willingness to stand up to government interference with the press are alive and well.

And living in the People's Republic of China:

"The row at the Southern Weekly - known for hard-hitting investigations and testing the limits of censorship - erupted after a new year editorial calling for guaranteed constitutional rights was changed at the last minute to one extolling the virtues of the Communist Party.

In two open letters, 35 prominent former staff and 50 interns at the paper have demanded the resignation of the provincial propaganda chief in Guangdong..."

Funny that the very thing these journalists are risking their freedom to protest is what the American MSM is falling all over themselves to embrace- the media as a mouthpices of the state.

77 I spent some time reading the lefty-econ blogs where this trillion-dollar coin idea really gained traction. (Don't worry - I disinfected afterwards.). They're really jazzed about this idea. Keep in mind that this is the same crowd that claims that the U.S. can't go bankrupt since we can print as many dollars as we need to pay off our debts.

Bottom line: I think the $1T coin idea is legal, even if it's a misuse of a law intended for other purposes (i.e., minting commemorative coins)

But

The 'revenue' generated by the coin is clearly fiat money, almost exactly like the dollars the Fed creates when it prints more of them. The added 'revenue' from the coin is simply conjured out of thin air, because this coin is worth whatever its minters say it's worth.

The bloggy-blogs also claim that minting the $1T coin won't be inflationary. Horsemuffins. Although it won't put more dollar bills into circulation, it will be viewed by other countries - and by currency traders - as a de facto devaluation of the dollar (which is exactly what it is), and they will act accordingly.

It's not only a Simpsonesque stunt, it's a desperate stunt as well. Reduce spending? Never heard of it.

78 Ah, Vic, I posted before I saw your story on Viva Las Vegas. Yes, the King did manage a little bedroom wrestling with "Thumper" (his nickname for her). In fact, gossip that Elvis and Ann-Margret were going to be married got Priscilla's dander up, and she flew out for a showdown with him.

According to biographerPeter Guralnick - author ofLast Train toMemphis and Careless Love - Ann-Margret did want to marry Elvis; it was the constant presence of the "Memphis Mafia" and, especially, the way Elvis was dominated by the carny huckster Colonel Parker that turned her off. If Elvis could stand on his own, she said, she would marry him. But he couldn't.

I sometimes think Elvis would still be around if he had married her.

106 Coins (and paper money) are printed by the US Mint to make fiat currency for US transactions. They are not minted in order to magically make money to be deposited in federal accounts. This so-called trillion-dollar coin is nothing more than a metallic T-bill which the treasury will redeem just like all the other t-bills. That will be done the same way, it is “borrowed” money. And that additional debt will exceed the debt ceiling. Which is a violation of law.

Of course the Republicans in the House will let him get away with it and the MFM will praise it as a good thing. If someone has the balls to sue AND the Supreme Court grants standing (unlikely) , Roberts will call it an executive tax and OK it.

What law does it violate?

It allows the government to keep spending without issuing additional debt, so there's no issue with the debt ceiling.

And congress passed a law that authorizes the executive branch to do this. It wasn't their intent in passing the law, but that doesn't really matter much.

The bad thing about the trillion dollar coin idea is that it is creating money out of thin air. That will never work.

As with any family or business budget, if you have heavy debt you have the option of selling some assets to pay them off. This is what the U.S. needs to do.

Because we are the sole superpower and financial epicenter of the world, we have the power to create the agency to purchase the assets and to establish the value. This could be the global reset that the world needs.

120 On the trillion dollar thing, am I correct that they're seeking to exploit the face value / high metal value situation in the minted coinage?

"The accounting treatment of the platinum coin is identical to all other
coins. When the Mint ships a coin from its vaults to those of the Fed,
it books as profit (or “seigniorage”) an amount equal to the difference
between the coin’s face value and its cost of production."

Because a private US citizen did that, must be five years ago - paying contractors with minted gold coins with a face value of a couple of hundred dollars but the metal value was thousands and his workplace was swarmed by heavily armed IRS agents.

I recall that leftists then went crazy about how he was so obviously breaking the "spirit" of the law and guffawed that he may spend his entire life in prison.

"A self-made entrepreneur, Kahre, 48, paid his workers in gold and silver
coin, and said they could go by the coins' face value -- rather than
the much higher market value of their precious metal content -- for
federal tax purposes. He did not withhold taxes from their wages, and he
provided the same payroll system to 35 outside clients, which were
other local businesses."

135 - "Democratic commentators are now laying the groundwork for the platinum coin trick."

It won't actually happen, but the fact it's even being discussed speaks volumes about the extent to which the U.S. severely has declined.

And if you ever truly want to have an Alice thru the looking glass moment, so to speak, and to observe what decades of liberal education and the liberal media have done to this country, scroll through the comments boards on financial Websites, such as Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, Morningstar, the Motley Fool, etc.

You'll see people saying things like all we need to do is to mint 16 trillion dollars in coins and pay off the entire national debt that way. People who think the housing market crises can be solved if the government simply paid off everyone's mortgages for them. People who think unemployment can be solved if the government issued a mandate that workers can't be fired. People who believe that the best way to create jobs is for the government to build new schools in every school district in America.

Years ago I presumed a lot of those types of nonsensical comments were just bored conservatives trolling for the sake of trolling or very young students with too much time to kill. But now it's become crystal clear that most if not substantially all of those people are adults and that they're serious. And these are folks who pay attention to politics. They're not even as dumb nor as ignorant as parts of the masses. Yet they have no idea about how economics works. They have no clue about how public finance works. No conception of inflation and what causes it. No f'n idea about how jobs are created and then maintained. No clue about the long-term interrelationships between public spending, deficits, currency values, inflation rates, interest rates, growth rates, etc.

It's staggering. It's frightening. The inescapable conclusion is that we're not going to make it. You simply can't win a long-term battle against terminally stupid and uninformed.

139 #126 As an individual vote, no, Castle would not have been better. As someone with an R after his name, he would have drawn us closer to control of the committees and the legislative agenda, which Reid now controls (hence no budget).

Right now I would be glad to have Lugar and a couple of other RINO's in place of the dems if there were enough to keep Reid from running the Senate.

However, what's past is past, and we soldier on.

140 The House can force all of this to a head and reduce the debt ceiling.

By 1 trillion dollars.

Spending will have to be reduced by default.

You lower the debt ceiling by 500 million dollars every year after that forcing more spending reductions and belt tightening.

The US has more than enough money to operate the government and meet it's mandatory spending and debt servicing.

The President and the Donks will cry but so what let them.

At some point we have to fight - Let this be the hill our side finally dies upon.

Also a reminder that while Comet SMOD (ISON) has already been mentioned, we have 2 comets this year. Panstaars should be visible naked-eye in 2 months' time, brightening to mag1-2 by March 16th. Will make for an interesting sight right after sunset for the latter half of March, appearing in the West before sinking right after the sun.

150 THere should be a movie called Obamas Trillions. And the premise is Obama gets a trillion dollar fortune, but first he has to spend his billions on things that give him no assets whatsoever.
So he could run for Office and tell voters to vote for None Of the Above. He can buy the most expensive stamp and then use on a letter he will send.
And of course he can have govt create a coin made out of platinum which he says will be worth a trillion dollars. But then he'll buy a cup of coffee with it.

The coin would be as worthless as the coin in my proposed movie.

Why not get the Franklin Mint to come up with commerative platinum coins that are models of the real platinum coin and everyday people can buy them for 19.95 from an infomercial.
I'm thinking on the face of the coin they should put a big pile of shit. And on the back could be Obama on the toilet.

In our bubble, we think of the church as returning to its traditional values, but never underestimate the foothold that social gospels gained starting before the 1950's. On the big world stage, scratch a catholic, find a commie.

So that's why they wont recognize St. Gabriel Possenti as the patron saint of handgunners.

Based on the markings, the drone had the following technical descriptions:
Aerial Target Drone BQM-74E Chukar III Part No.: 89500-517 Model: BQM 74E Serial
Number: BQ 55048 Contract No.: N00019-05C0040 Cage No.: 77646 Acceptance Date:

The drone has a wingspan of 1.76 meters and a height of .71 meters, Olitoquit
said.

The word “Navy” is written on one side of the drone.

Drones are commonly used for military or nonmilitary surveillance and/or
reconnaissance.

Not armed

In Manila, the US Embassy said the drone that landed off Masbate was neither
armed nor used for intelligence gathering. The embassy has yet to say
categorically if US forces deployed it.

241 Re the trillion dollar coin, why don't they just authorize us all to print own money. They could require that laser printers, custom inks, and special paper were required (thus boosting printer, paper, and ink sales and helping the economy). Then they could charge a fee for acccessing the PDF of the plate images (note that CJ Roberts could declare this a tax if necessary).

All the money printed on the "personal" basis would be worth as much as Bernanke dollars will be in four years time, so I think it is high time to cut out the middle-man and give the economy a real boost.

Same exact Drone we used to fire off the side of ships flight decks back in the early 80's.
Unarmed, radio controlled, used for aerial gunnery practice.
At the end of a run, the engine shut down, parachute popped out the top, and once it hit water, the parachute was released to sink, and a small flotation balloon inflated at the tail area.
The photos in the article show each of these features having been usd during it's final flight.
After a gunnery practice, they just couldn't find it floating in the ocean, and it drifted off.
I know we lost 2-3 off South America during the two Unitas cruises I did as part of the crash crew to shoot those things off.

Oh, I get asked all the damn time why I don't have or want kids. That was one of the main reasons behind the creation of the how much do you weigh - how much do you make - when's the last time you had sex responses. Usually responding like that gets the point across as to just how rude the question is.

It's actually the worst with church people since then I get hit with but but but you are violating God's will by not reproducing! Apparently, being single is no longer a problem since IVF neatly sidesteps the whole not being married but fucking issue. I have taken to replying "I hate children" to those who won't let it go. When they laugh, I press on and reiterate that I hate children. That usually ends the conversation right quick.

I think we've previously established that a significant fraction of the GIs (and their wives and sisters and brothers back home farming) weren't 21 in 1932. My grandfather, for example, was 10 or 11, and cast his first vote after the war.

It was their parents and grandparents, voting themselves their kids' money.

Oh, that implication was in there as well. I'm not linking to it because it's one of those things where it is obvious that nothing I or anyone will say will get that person to comprehend a. why what she wrote is so insulting and b. change her mind. People who do not want kids are selfish per se. Game over, case closed, no possible realization that what she's saying is ridiculously insulting to, say, those who want children but cannot have them or those who want children but refuse to be a single parent. No, no, no, those are shades of grey and we cannot have that. Having kids = the only way to be an adult = good. End of story.

What kind of mentality assumes that straight women have a burning desire to inhale the fumes arising from a stinky diaper?

And to the one who thought I was gay, I asked him: If I were gay, don't you think you'd have seen me with a girlfriend by now?

I guess it was no big surprise that the numbnuts who made these assumptions couldn't keep their own wives happy.
