Democrat leaders in the Senate and House assert that Obama has the power to unilaterally raise the US debt ceiling: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has reportedly told President Barack Obama that he would back the president overriding congressional authority and unilaterally raising the debt ceiling. And if Obama agrees with them, next step is fiat government by assertion of authority. Your semi-automatic gun might just become the same as a machine gun: If new gun control measures don't pass the Senate and House, the game is far from over. The Obama administration is investigating the possibility of executive orders reclassifying semi-automatic firearms as title 2 weapons, thus doing by fiat what the legislative branch rejected. The fight will continue, just in a different locale than the Senate and House. According to wikipedia this would make them all subject to NFA rules: Title II of the Gun Control Act of 1968 is a revision of the National Firearms Act of 1934, and pertains to machine guns, short or "sawed-off" shotguns and rifles, and so-called "destructive devices" (including grenades, mortars, rocket launchers, large projectiles, and other heavy ordnance). Acquisition of these weapons is subject to prior approval of the Attorney General, and federal registration is required for possession. Generally, a $200 tax is imposed upon each transfer or making of any Title II weapon. Over at Zerohedge, this is brilliant:
Put Me In Charge... Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job. Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job. Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place. In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..” Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem. If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices. AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job. f'n brilliant IMHO Posted by: shibumi at January 07, 2013 09:47 PM (z63Tr) 32

Socialized Healthcare: “Accelerated Deaths”
The march of the butchers in socialized medicine continues unabated in Europe. France is considering allowing doctors to “accelerate the coming of death.” Not only would they allow patients to refuse treatment and allow doctors to administer painkilling drugs that have a secondary effect of shortening a patient’s life, which would be consistent with a patient having control over their own lives and bodies, as well as allow family members make the decision for an unconscious dying loved one, but allow doctors to withdraw treatment if that treatment is “just” keeping the patient alive. Considering the penchant of some European doctors of harvesting organs of recovering patients whom they deem “braindead,” this should be of great concern for Europeans who care for their loved one’s very survival. Senator Dianne Feinstein, I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believe it is the government’s right to know what I own. Nor do I think it prudent to tell you what I own so that it may be taken from me by a group of people who enjoy armed protection yet decry me having the same a crime. You ma’am have overstepped a line that is not your domain. I am a Marine Corps Veteran of 8 years, and I will not have some woman who proclaims the evil of an inanimate object, yet carries one, tell me I may not have one. I am not your subject. Pakistan:
A new Pakistan Army doctrinal handbook identifies, for the first time, that a priority Pakistan Army mission is suppression of internal threats to the government of Pakistan. In the so-called "green book" the internal threat has higher priority than the Indian threat, for the first time in Pakistan's history. Comment: The Kashmir incident this weekend conveys that the new Pakistan Army concentration on internal threats does not signify reduced vigilance opposite and/or meddling in Indian Kashmir. On the other hand, this doctrinal shift represents the first time Pakistan Army planners have recognized that tribal uprisings in support of a fundamentalist Islamic theology pose a real and present danger to the constitutional order in Pakistan. As a result they now are a priority target for the Army. http://tinyurl.com/axnbebe (kforcegov.com) Posted by: LC LaWedgie at January 07, 2013 10:16 PM (0It32) Posted by: Jones in CO at January 07, 2013 10:16 PM (8sCoq) 102

"I'm really starting to worry about the gun stuff."
My own worries have recently accelerated. Quite a bit. Flash back twenty years. Clinton administration. We have a family friend. You know how some old line Democrat voters have portraits of FDR and JFK? She has a portrait of Robert A. Taft. Representing her self-styled political views: sound, sober, modest, reliable, common-sense, middle of the road Midwestern Republicanism. The Clinton types started to talk to voters about banning "assault weapons". Well, this pleasant and well meaning woman didn't know an assault weapon from a emperor penguin. She was on the fence. Convinceable either direction. What she needed was someone pro-Second-Amendment to calmly explain the issues to her. No, an assault weapon is not a "machine gun", even though the press and Clinton say so. No, there isn't actually any epidemic of assault weapons being used in crime. That sort of thing. Reasoned arguments, politely put. She responds to those. Instead, another family friend who was in the self-described "patriot militia" movement of the era sent her a bunch of wacko literature. Oh brother. Completely not what was needed or helpful. It was a bunch of lengthy rants, poorly spelled, about how Clinton was a KGB plant and was going to, after banning assault weapons, then allow UN peacekeepers in black helicopters to invade America, impose the New World Order, make Freemasonry and lesbianism mandatory, and put fluoride in children's ice cream. I may have left some stuff out. Included in this package of wonderfulness were a bunch of frankly totally bogus scare quotes, including one purporting to be from Sara [sic] Brady, saying that gun confiscations were urgently necessary in order to prevent citizens from resisting the socialist takeover of America. Uh, WTF? Where did that shit come from? The audience was not receptive to the message, needless to say. In fact, this woman called up the offices of the Brady Campaign and specifically asked about the scare quote from "Sara Brady". She got a pleasant, helpful young staffer who told her that no, Sarah Brady had never said anything of the kind. And that Sarah Brady was a sensible, common-sense, sober, responsible, reliable person just like her, one whose family had been turned upside down by horrible gun violence, and could the caller join Sarah in that worthwhile cause? Guess what? She did. She's poured a shit-ton of money into checks for anti-gun organizations ever since. And has regularly called her political representatives pushing steadily for more and deeper gun control. Because one noisy "pro-gun" and "patriot" clown had convinced her that pro-gun people are utter paranoid nutbags spouting imaginary crap, and who can't be trusted to own guns. Guess what again? Just the other day, over at Hot Gas, I found some helpful pro-gun type posting a long list of quotes by anti-gun advocates, and what was in there along with the real deal? You guessed it. The very same transparently false quote from "Sara Brady", still reasserting itself in unstoppable zombie fashion two decades down the road. For fuck's sake. Can all of us on the right please, please learn the basic task of distinguishing between shit and Shinola before we start making public statements? Please? If Obama unilaterally raises the debt ceiling, is it at this point that Congress could just stop the continuing budget resolutions, and then pass bills one by one directing where the money goes? So theoretically, each month, the next month's welfare payments could be bundled in bills that eliminate entire government departments (energy, education, EPA) and if Obama and the Democrats want the welfare payments to go through, they have to pass the bills? I hope that's how it goes down. This, is the last fight. Posted by: Stateless_Infidel at January 07, 2013 10:32 PM (AC0lD) 143

It's possible that you're among the large number of people who suffer from EDD. No, that isn't a typo -- I don't mean ADD or ED. It's EDD, which stands for "Empathy Deficit Disorder."
I made it up, so you won't find it listed in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Normal variations of mood and temperament are increasingly redefined as new "disorders," so I'm hesitant to suggest a new one. But this one's real, and it's becoming more pronounced in today's world. I've identified it from my decades of experience as a business psychologist, psychotherapist and researcher into adult development. From that triple vantage point I've concluded that Empathy Deficit Disorder is a pervasive but overlooked condition. In fact, our increasingly polarized social and political culture of the past few years reveals that EDD is more severe than ever. It has profound consequences for the mental health of both individuals and society. Yet it's ignored as a psychological disturbance by most of my colleagues in the mental health professions. First, some explanation of what I mean by EDD: When you suffer from it you're unable to step outside yourself and tune in to what other people experience, especially those who feel, think and believe differently from yourself. That makes it a source of personal conflicts, of communication breakdown in intimate relationships, and of adversarial attitudes - including hatred - towards groups of people who differ in their beliefs, traditions or ways of life from your own. How does Roberts justify taking a paycheck when he fails at the single most important aspect of his job? He will go down as one of this nation's blackest villains. Posted by: torquewrench at January 07, 2013 10:27 PM (gqT4g) First of all, I'm in agreement with this. There's far too much Loose Shit and Rumormongering, especially on this topic. People can take ten seconds to look something up and just refuse to, and it's maddening. People Need To Get Their Shit Together. But I've found it's hard to get people to do that, because A) people are pretty lazy, B) people are inclined to just take anything they agree with for granted, and worst of all, C) the left gets away with it all the time. I don't really have an argument against the last one except "that's wrong," to which the reply is "it works for them, they're winning." All I can say is "there's a double standard, they're bigots, and you have to work three times as hard to get to the same place." And then I say "fuck the MFM with a rusty post-hole digger," which makes them feel a little better. And then they post the fake Yamamoto quote again the next week. It's an uphill battle. And then if you correct them *again* they get mad at you. Hey, maybe people *are* too stupid to be free. The argument against that is they're also too stupid to rule, so we're stuck with it. Hypothetically (and somewhat off-topic), if one were to order a Pietta or Uberti Remington Army .44 cap and ball revolver from an online retailer like, say, Cabela's, one could then buy a Kirst conversion cylinder and very easily convert that cap-and-ball revolver into a very fine and very powerful SA cartridge-firing .45 Colt revolver, all on-line, all legally (in most states) and without going through an FFL.

New guns laws
Remember, national health care may have seemed like a overnight event but the Progressives started over 90 years ago. Doubtful they'll try a head-on approach to guns. They will put up stupid, grand-standing bills that will be voted down because the Left has had trouble with the direct, fascist approach. These first bills are misdirection. The broader bills will fail and - wrist to forehead - "woe unto us!" Then they wait for the public to go back to sleep. Bit and pieces of small anti-gun legislation may pass, not to purposely ban guns and accessories but to catch people making mistakes. The more tiny laws, the more gun-owners in jail and, surprise, unable to ever own a firearm again. Step 2: the corporatist approach ala Instapundit. Wrangle insurance co's and get them to gently and quietly turn the screws on owners. The Insurance Co's will also put pressure corporate accounts to make gun-owning employees look like dangerous liabilities. Gunshops and mfrs will become harassed with nit-picking requests non-stop. Any and all mistakes will turn into legal action. Those in the industry will become targets for the wonderful entrepreneurs of Statism, lawyers. Employment suits, ADA suits, any and all legal harassment will commence. Bank of America's recent actions will become commonplace. "Now, Mr. Jones before we give you the papers for the loan, we want to know just one thing ..." All the while the press will begin turning gun-ownership into a seemly thing, encouraging people to have 'The Discussion' with their gun-owning neighbors and acquaintances. "We're not comfortable with your guns and your obsession. Please turn them into the police." Slowly, slowly. The main advantage of the slow tactic is that there is no clear line-in-the-sand event. It's harder to rally citizens against such a wide-ranging set of small initiatives, particularly when they are not direct actions taken by Congress or the Executive. What to do? Sue the corporations helping with this campaign? Dismissed. It's private business. Can you prove a link to the Executive? Not convincing enough, Mr. Citizen. Now and then groups may pop up and respond to these measure kinetically but there won't be enough coordination or public support and they will die. Those sad souls will become the Feds new Public Enemy No. 1. The MSM turns the volume up to 11. We will be lucky if Left oversteps their bounds early creating a bright red line in the sand. They have done this in the past but there is no guarantee they won't opt for ... slowly, slowly. Posted by: weft cut-loop at January 07, 2013 10:47 PM (KDq5l) 196

Microsoft reported that two iPad 2s and two iPad 3s with a combined value of more than $3,000 were taken some time between Dec. 19 and Dec. 26 on the company's campus. A police report also said a fifth tablet -- described as an iPad4, worth $729 -- was taken as well. But that model does not exist yet. [The police] said it may have been a typo... So since I realized mid first quarter how the game would go, I started perusing my movie channels and stumbled across A Lonely Place to Die on Showtime. Quite good and Melissa George once again kicks ass in it. The plot is that five friends are out in the Scottish Highlands doing a wee bit of mountaineering when they come across a pipe in the ground and hear a girl yelling. Turns out they've stumbled across a little girl who has been buried in the ground and then they get her out and then try to get her down the mountain. Stuff happens from there. Very intense, though the ending doesn't quite live up to the start. I quite enjoyed it though the accents are very Scottish indeed and I had to turn on the closed captioning. I recommend it.
Obligatory Melissa George rec for Triangle. Now there's a movie that plays with what may or may not be time traveling quite well. Once you realize what story is actually being told, it's heartbreaking as well. Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD. We're not worthy. at January 07, 2013 10:54 PM (Gk3SS) 224

Top Gear USA is crap because the creators and writers don't understand *either* Top Gear UK *or* America.
It's basically people who gloss over what made TGUK popular and view America from media company offices in high-rises in New York or LA or whatever. TGUK - personal chemistry, humor, political incorrectness, cinematography, music, choreography America - all of the above modified by practicality and each above item would have a different flavor because of America being America. We also have a more fragmented audience because you have to cover musclecars and import market as well as exotics and more practical cars. TGUSA from what little I've seen has mediocre personal chemistry and humor, and the choreography and cinematography is a pale imitation of TGUK, and the music is listless and ill-timed. The same thing happened with TGAus, btw. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 07, 2013 11:05 PM (bxiXv) 251

My whole family is in Northern Wisconsin getting ready for my cousin's funeral...I can't be there which sucks for me but I haven't stopped crying since Friday. My 25 year old cousin Katie lost her life Thursday morning on her way to work in a car wreck...lost control on slippery roads and slid across the centerline and took another car head-on. She didn't suffer, killed instantly, and the other driver was ok after being taken to the hospital. Seat belt was on, cell phone turned off, Katie just lost control and her life *sob*. IMO the GSX was the best of the Chevelle/442/GSX trio.
But I would totally get a Skylark and fix it up instead, because I would hate to wreck a GSX by replacing all the suspension and engine controls with stuff that works for me. Maybe even get a Skylark, back- and front-half it to save weight, Corvette suspension, fuel-injected Turbo small-block (LS1), and for crying out loud better seats! I have a slight nostalgia for old cars, but honestly, I don't like old cars very much. Some of them look great, but after I drive them for a while I'm just mad at fighting with everything and poor handling and uncomfortable and on and on... I have a slight nostalgia for old cars, but honestly, I don't like old
cars very much. Some of them look great, but after I drive them for a while I'm just mad at fighting with everything and poor handling and uncomfortable and on and on... I have a friend who cherishes a mint-condition '68 Mustang with a 302 ci mill. I drove it hard a few months ago and it was terrifying. The brakes were abject crap and you had to fight it to make it turn. You slide back and forth on the seats and the dash is mostly unpadded metal. And this was a highly-regarded car in its day. It's astonishing how miserable and dangerous automobile handling was just 45 years ago. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at January 07, 2013 11:52 PM (+ni/E) 340

re: "Found the classic car I want to buy. Anybody got an extra $120k they aren't using?"
That's a comedy price. Go to a classic car auction. Bid on every no-reserve car that due to mysterious mass error/delusion can't break some arbitrary threshold way below its value. Almost every time, you'll break the crowd's madness and send the price up past what you'd pay. But one time, you'll take home an awesome car for a good price. You can always throw the guy a few extra grand, off the record, if you feel bad about taking the car he first got laid in for $6000. While all the news regarding the SCoaMF's machinations is certainly depressing, I've also been going back and reading "the classics" of political philospohy, &c.
Some good, like Burke, and others more indicative of where we are today. I'm in the middle of reading Rousseau, and he is basically a cerebral onanist who enjoys talking out his butt. Rousseau fully believed that all people must submit to "the general will." He is truly the poisoned spring that virtually all great evil over the past quarter millennium has sprung: From the Jabobins in Revolutionary France, to the NAZIs in German or the Soviets in Russia, on to Obama today. Oh well, the last OVA episode of Hellsing came out, so I'll try watching that to feel better... Posted by: The Political Hat at January 08, 2013 12:12 AM (Vk2pI) 368

Posted by: Buzzsaw at January 08, 2013 12:04 AM (qo244) The answer is always "it depends." The RX-8 got better mileage *and* emissions than the 7, with more hp/liter (naturally aspirated), but don't benefit as much from a turbo because they're so tightly tuned (and on a rotary tuning is partly port alignment, and that's not variable). You have to remember it was invented in 1957. The Otto-cycle engine was invented in 1861. Slight head start. The latest rotary designs, for models and snowmobiles and hopefully the next generation of Mazda rotaries, is even more improved. The RX-8 has a specific power output of 183 hp per liter of displacement. Which is nice. Eventually I'd like to play with one of those. Oh and the art that is in mechanical objects is what draws me to guns too. Also, the whole rotary efficiency thing, it's a whole other world. Atkins Rotary has been making rotary aircraft engines and has discovered a lot about that, it's a different beast than a piston engine. 70s and 80s racers knew that about the rotaries, they were "most efficient" and durable running 75%+ percent power output - but that doesn't equal fuel efficiency on the street, quite the opposite. Development would have been faster, I think, if they hadn't been regulated out of so many racing classes. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 08, 2013 12:27 AM (bxiXv) 384

My daughter just graduated from a nursing program. She has previously considered going on to become a nurse practitioner; but first you need 2 works of work history as a practicing nurse.
So that would be goal one if she wants to go to the next step. She takes her state boards in a couple of weeks. Then we shall see how it all shakes out. The NP program takes another 2 years of class/patient time to get to the NP level. I currently see a NP myself; overall, I rate her willingness to talk plainly with me and thoroughly as a big plus over my old PCP. I guess in 2014 our business arrangement will be judged 'insufficient' and I'll start facing fines for non-compliance in 2014. And so it goes. Nee's son, Joseph Nee, was convicted in 2008 for planning to commit mass murder of students and teachers at Marshfield High School in Massachusetts, similar to that of Columbine in 1999. You deserve to keep as much of your money as possible. Turbotax wants to help you. Every dollar counts". Why can't the GOP articulate its point just as clearly? It's an easy argument. Replace "Turbotax wants to help you" with "Republicans want to help everyone."
