Happy Monday.

This evening I'll be on GayPatriot's conservative radio revival of Match Game, along with Breitbart editor Larry O’Connor, Conservative Daily News' Michelle Ray, Breitbart reporter Mary Chastain, Right Hook’s John Brodigan, and PJ Media's Stephen Green. Details are over here.

Some news items to get you started today:

California property crime rate is up after Gov. Brown released low-level prisoners due to overcrowding. Go figure.

Obama nominee for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is taking fire from both the right and the left. Democrats are asking why Obama would pick this fight right now.

Also, and this is just breaking, Obama will reportedly nominate counterterrorism aide John Brennan as CIA director.

Hurricane Katrina was "nothing" compared to superstorm Sandy, says Harry Reid.

The House and Senate are quietly working on appropriations bills to avoid either another continuing resolution (we're currently on a 6 month extension) or a government shutdown when the CR runs out on March 27. I suppose that's been the stealth "cliff." We've got sequestration in two months and the debt ceiling sometime between now and then. And then the actual budget fight.

NY Post investigation finds, just as you always thought, that EBT cards are being used to get cash at strip clubs, adult video stores, liquor stores, and bars. The NY Post starts: "They’re on the dole — and watching the pole."

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, January 07, 2013. On this day in 1920 the New York State Assembly refused to seat five duly elected Communist assemblymen. Oh how times have changed. There are 164 of them seated now, and possibly even more from the other Party.

3 Bill moving forward in CT to make the names and addresses of 170,000 gun owners public. And yet the libtard idiots say registration is a “common sense” thing. I never have figured out how “registration” prevents any crime at all. Every criminal in the country that has been charged or convicted is “registered”. And yet repeat offenders are the norm, not the exception.

35 Rand Pauls son charged with disorderly conduct. Sounds pretty bad. I'm thinking he was fighting or groping a stewardess or throwing spitballs even. From wiki, disorderly conduct is:

Typically, disorderly conduct makes it a crime to be drunk in public, to "disturb the peace", or to loiter in certain areas.

So, as with all people, I don't think he should not be held accountable, but unless he was also biting a stewies ass while drinking a 5th of whiskey, it's kinda not as big of deal as I thought.

62 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. And thanks (I guess) for the headlines, Gabe and Vic.

I’m going to keep things quick today, with three small stories about the curmudgeonly W.C. Fields:

Fields’ dislike of children was not entirely unreasonable; as an inveterate scene-stealer himself, he knew that just the presence of a child on stage or screen was liable to take focus away from an actor. So while his much-publicized feud with Baby LeRoy (who appeared in the films Tillie and Gus, The Old Fashioned Way[i/] and It’s A Gift) was partially for publicity, Fields really did not like the wee actor. During one scene in Tillie and Gus, LeRoy was crying and ruined take after take. Fields decided a couple of jiggers of gin in his bottle would be all the tyke needed to quiet down. As it turned out, the gin hit LeRoy like a sucker punch, and all he could do was stagger around the set. A gleeful Fields watched, drawling from the sidelines, “Look at him. The kid’s no trouper. He’s no trouper. He can’t act. Send him home!”

But Fields was not entirely heartless. In the middle of his DeMille Drive estate he had a large lily pond, where he kept a toy yacht floating night and day. To his horror, one afternoon when neighbors Anthony Quinn and Katherine DeMille were visiting, their son, two-year old Christopher, drowned in it. Blaming himself for the tragedy – certain that Christopher had been attracted to the toy – Fields took a shotgun and blasted the little yacht to pieces, then had the pond drained and filled in.

But it is Fields’ crusty persona – the misanthrope who hates dogs, women and children in varying measure – that will always be Hollywood legend, as illustrated by one of the many “deathbed” stories told about him: it seems that, close to death, Fields whispered to his wife, “You know, I’ve been thinkin’ about all those poor newsboys out there. Cold, hungry, scared. . .I’d like to do somethin’ for ‘em.” He then closed his eyes and struggled for breath. When he managed to open his eyes again, his jaw was firm with conviction. “On second thought, fuck ‘em.”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

80 200 million transaction records and that's all they've got? Looks like a waste of time and serious money to fix a very small problem. It's aggravating, sure, and wrong, but not something (at the abuse level that they expose) that we need to waste money fixing.

81 Of course. if WASH wins that game, RG3 is a hero and Shanahan is a brilliant coach who has revived a once-great franchise. But the Skins lost, so the knives are out.

That said, Dan Snyder should be horse-whipped. he has the biggest venue in the NFL, I think also one of the newest, and the playing surface is a cut above a vacant industrial lot.

I don't know. They took him in to be worked on at least twice. They took his bionic knee brace off. It sure looked to me that he was in no shape to continue after about the first quarter.

I know in New England before the league made us change it to turf, the grounds crew would do that on purpose to slow the game down. It made sense because we were usually the slower team in terms of foot speed.

With Washington's old, slow linebackers and under-talented WR corps, that might be why they do it there too.

RG3's been hurt since the Ravens game and to run that offense, where you need not only an athletic QB but one who can outrun just about everyone on the field, you need him at 100%; it's a testimony to RG3 that he did as well as he did. They can not do that here. They must use it at a store that has a point of Sale (POS) reader and emblem in the window of the store. These are ONLY food stores and there is a list of food items that can be purchased. The rules they apply in those stores are actually Federal Rules and they are:
Any food or food product except for ready-to-eat hot foodsBaby formula, goat's milk, Pedialyte and Pediasure Seeds and plants used to grow foods including fruit trees Fresh produce items from authorized vendors Meals prepared and delivered by a meal delivery service such as Meals on Wheels Meals at congregate meal sites such as soup kitchens Nutritional supplements such as Ensure, Isomil, Boost and Sustacal Weight loss products such as Dynatrim, Slim Fast, Cambridge Diet and Nutrisystem Artificial Sweeteners Distilled Water Ice Lactaid caplets and Lactaid milk Cooking Sprays, such as Never Stik and Pam Prepared cold sandwiches or salads that will not be eaten in the store

As I understand it, and I could be very wrong on this, most states have moved to a unified system for state benefits, all of which get placed onto an EBT card. So the funds for food stamps go on the card and the funds for cash assistance go on the card and there's no differentiation between the two once the funds hit the account. That card functions as a debit card and cash can be taken out at an ATM or as change with a purchase at the grocery store. It's no longer a matter of there being actual food stamps that have to be torn out of the book and given to the cashier. Why? To reduce the stigma of using food stamps at the store. Now it's just swipe your card like anyone else there.

NY isn't the only state where things like this have been reported. I know CA either passed or was considering passing legislation restricting ATM access by EBT cards at casinos and strip clubs and tattoo parlors. Cash is cash, after all.

146 - "California property crime rate is up after Gov. Brown released low-level prisoners due to overcrowding. Go figure."

Elections do have serious consequences.

- "Obama nominee for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is taking fire from both the right and the left. Democrats are asking why Obama would pick this fight right now."

It's a rhetorical question. The answers are obvious. First it's an intended distraction. The more talk about Chuck Hagel -- whom the body politic at large would not know from Chuck Woolery -- the less talk about how payroll taxes just got hiked on every person who works and how job creators just got soaked with higher income taxes. The other point about nominating Hagel is that by doing so it allows the liberal Democrat media to advance Obama's talking points about Iran. The media itself is skeptical of Hagel -- they're more liberal than the Democrat Party at large -- but that won't stop them from dutifully pushing Obama's talking points.

- "Hurricane Katrina was "nothing" compared to superstorm Sandy, says Harry Reid."

Imagine if a Republican said that. Yikes.

There's more to that statement than meets the eye. Reid gives off the impression of this milquetoast accountant type. In reality Reid is a throwback to Tammany Hall. Corrupt. Racist. Ruthless. Utterly incapable of feeling political shame, remorse or pity. Reid is able to say something like that, without evening blinking an eye, because Reid doesn't give a rat's ass about anything other than getting his way, by hook or crook if necessary. Again, elections have consequences.

IMO, the best thing about the original what that John McClaine was a real person - or, as close as one can be within the confines of a movie. He was scared. He bled. He hurt. He was desperate. Now he's just another super-buff, indestructible hero.

Jump through a plate glass window and survive? Drop from a helicopter through three stories of an condemned building and still manage a "yippee-ki-ay, motherfucker?" Please. I know its escapism, but. . .well, YMMV.

161 #156 Mary Poppins , I have had this on my mind since visiting Canterbury this summer.

Canterbury Cathedral is the site of the murder of St. Thomas Becket, murdered by henchmen of Henry II. The murder site is marked with a creepy stylized drawing of knives on the wall. It also is marked by a plaque where Pope John Paul II prayed for peace.

And in a church about a mile from the Cathedral is the burial site of the head of St. Thomas Moore, executed for similar reasons by Henry VIII. This was also the church where Henry II began his walk to the Cathedral barefoot and in a hair shirt.

Mindful that Cardinal George said that he expected to die in bed, his successor to die in prison, andHIS successor to die a martyr, I am watching with sorrow the attacks on people of faith (Muslims, of course, excluded).

164 Democrats say they want to raise as much as $1 trillion in new revenues through tax reform later this year to balance Republican demands to slash mandatory spending.

Democratic leaders have had little time to craft a new position for their party since passing a tax deal Tuesday that will raise $620 billion in revenue over the next ten years.

The emerging consensus, however, is that the next installment of deficit reduction should reach $2 trillion and about half of it should come from higher taxes.

194 What are your thoughts on Last Stand (or whatever it's called- the new Governator movie)? I'm contemplating going just for the ridiculousness.

What's the plot on that - Ahhnuld is a local, small-town cop caught up in things bigger than he knows? Maybe. Again, he's one of those impossible beings, but with him (and Stallone as well, save for the vastly underrated Coptown) there's an element of unreality in his very being. Perhaps it will work. But I think that Arnold is like Andrew Lloyd Webber (hold your laughter): he had a formula in the 1980s that made him famous and rich. Whenever he's varied from that formula, as in a Kindergarten Cop, Twins or even Last Action Hero, he's bombed. Now he's trying to return to that formula, but it's not as fresh, or, frankly, as entertaining as it was before.

And with Lloyd Webber, see Whistle Down The Wind, The Lady In White and the utterly execrable Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies. Why do you think there's a Broadway revival of Evita just now?

213 Being a gas station cashier due to Obamacare destroying my degree field, I've had a front row seat to EBT abuse. People come in whose remaining balance on their cards is over 2000$, driving big SUV's. They wear expensive clothes, buy nothing but overpriced, name brand junk food like 4$ bags of potato chips, 7$ bags of beef jerky, 5$ pints of Ben & Jerry's and a metric buttload of candy bars.

Then, despite abusing my tax money to buy all those things they *clearly* needed my assistance for, they still have enough actual cash (we don't accept EBT cash benefits, just the food program) to buy cartons of premium cigarettes, cases of beer, top off the gas tank, and buy 20$ scratchoff tickets.

This program is abused more than it is properly used. I can only once in the past year recall anyone buying things like flour, sugar, and cooking oil with it. I believe the food stamp program ought to be abolished, and if we replace it at all, do so with direct shipments of boxes of real, nutritious food and food ingredients instead of giving people a credit card with which they can soak the taxpayers for junk.
